great pictures brought back some memories for me I worked for p&o and as a result was on the Chitral & Cathay on pretty much the same run K.G.5 Tilbury to pick up passengers then S.A East Africa India Malaya Singapore H.K & Japan then back home great ships great times even for a refrig eng . used to dock next to the Centaur in Singapore a few times, they were really were the golden years for us in the M.N.
Interesting to see this. My late father was a Chinese seaman(chef) on board the blue funnel ships in the 40's and 50's. Some of his friends continued being seamen in the 60's and early 70's. I thought I was seeing things when I saw Steptoe on board the ship!
Hi Ken, great to see these pictures. My dad served with BF from about 1958 through to 1971 eventualy leaving as 2nd Engineer and doing the usual thing of getting a pub. He loved Hong Kong and Singapore but wasn't too keen on Northern China. Sadly he died in 1996 so seeing these pictures and knowing dad had been there makes me happy.
@@Seafarer1947 Too late to share in these awesome adventures!. AB certificate gained 1991, and second Mate foreign going gained 2004. Only wish to have shared in these adventures! I fought hard and eventually visited 72 countries and traveled more than 1 million nautical miles thanks to the merchant navy!
i was with blue flu in the late 70's early 80's sailing on the glenogle..glenfaloch... helenus..hector...lycayon and so on. this brings back so many memories of the far east ...oooooooooo i could tell some tales of life on blue flu.... brill video thanks for the memories....
Fascinating for me - my old man was Blu Flu After WW2 when he was in the RN. In the RN he was on HMS Hector (Armed Merchant Cruiser) a commandeered AH ship when when they were bombed by the Japs in Columbo harbour - the ship was lost along with many of his ship mates (many from the Hebrides) In the 1950/60's he sailed on the AH replacement Hector. I often wondered what he thought about that. Intresting to see some of the places he would have visited.
I recognised Alan Smith (chief Steward) in the background at 9:05, best Chief Steward in the fleet, I ran into him many years later in Prestatyn North Wales.
seeing the Rhexenor brings back a lot of memories, I did my first trip to sea on her in 1950 with railway engines on deck, sick as a dog in Bay of Biscay had some great times
If you are still in the Manchester area Kenny we will have to go for a pint some time. Iam 71 now. Was made redundant from Ocean in 1987 but carried on on foreign flag until retiring in 2004.
Hi Terry. Thanks for the email. Yes it is me & of course yourself together with Allan Pugh & Wilfred Brambell on the Asphalion whilst at Hong Kong. The rest of the pics were taken in Bangkok & other places like Australia, Japan, USA at different times. Never to be repeated in history & of course happy days with no worries. I ended up on the 'S' class prior to taking redundancy at the end of 1984. Just come back from my hols in Thailand, Malaya, Singapore & Hong Kong. Best wishes from me.
@Hereman7 Wilfred Brambell used to come on board ship for a G & T whenever he was in Hong Kong. Good for a laugh. When we took Rhexenor to the breakers yard in Kaohsiung, Taiwan 1975, I took a few shots of this sad ships graveyard as can be seen in the slide show. Strangely enough, the Gunung Djati was there too as we came into the demolition area !
Ken Bolton -just come across this video.Remember you well .I was on the very last ship in the fleet handed over in Falmouth before moving over to Shell where I remained up to my retirement 3 years ago.Happy days on Atreus along with Chief Officer Robin.
see this video reminds me of my father .... he seamanship school at the academy. He cadet at the Blue Funnel Line 1963 ..... i hopefully he sailed in the nature of Jesus now
Hi Terry I tried to email you but it was bounced back. Glad you like the photo show, I was also in touch with Alan Pugh R/O and he has viewed it. Too busy now for going out pubbing it, just Friday night now for a couple of hours. Hope Dorrie liked the photos of Norman and the gang. Take care, ken
I hope the "old guy that was so overdressed" wasn't Wilfred Bramble (ales Stepto and son's) if it was he would have been very poor company as he never stops talking about himself, boring on a long trip!!!

Thanks Tim. Glad you liked this nostalgic look at the Blue Funnel days which will never be replicated 😟
The good old days when we had a merchant navy and with beautiful ships of character. Only the waves are still the same.
sadly all a just memory now, never to be resurrected 😞
