I can understand the curvature and height should be the same. But the width of the feet and top? If you’re going to shape it exactly like the other one, what’s the point in changing it? I figure, a thicker top is stronger.

    • @RiyaJaneYulde
      @RiyaJaneYulde  4 роки тому +6

A thicker top is good for lower grade wood or for higher bridges for higher archs to avoid warp. If you have a 3 tree bridge, the thinner it is, the louder/brighter sound you will get (this is what a luthier told me)

yuekun03 ang bridge parang sa buhay yan e maselan pero, sometimes you have to go through failures bago maranasan ang success.its not perfect pa, kailangan ko pa mag aral p at maraming masasayng na bridge bago ko makuha yung skill. kahit may kaunting awang nag improve yung sound nya.sobra.wait mo lang video.so imagine kung maipalapat ko ng husto yan.the playability is also better kasi mejo nagkamali ako sa top.sa pagkakamali ko na un mas naging ok ung sound and mas buo syang patunugin as if nasa 1st position ako kahit nasa 5th na

yuekun03 besides, I will always have the old bridge and I can go back to it.i dont think i would hehehe pero pedeng pngkalang whilst on the process of making a new one saka pattern 😅. ang no no is, bawasan ung bridge na existing. pero if meron ka na spare at gusto mo pag aralan, no one should stop tou 😅 as long as alam mo pano ibalik

Not bad for the first time...my violin luthier told me it needs a lot of blank bridges to fit it nearly perfect and it needs a lot of patience...same ist the bow rehairing...but i like your approaches ... and if you try it again and again it will be better and better, believe me...you have talent. Well, I'm confused.
    1. why are you removing chin rest.
It is absolutely unnecessary. On old instrument chinrest can be sticked to the varnish and you can chip the varnish off the violin. Not recommended to remove the chin rest. Not worth the risk to damage instrument.
    2. 1:22 really ????????? Removing bridge without string lifter ???????????????? Let sum it up.
Risk of snapping the bridge, risk of soundpost failing inside the instrument. Risk of scratching the varnish (varnish on your violin around the bridge looks very badly by the way and it is a relatively new violin)
I don't know if you mentioned that strings must be tuned down before this procedure. otherwise removing bridge like this will cause tailpice hitting the top plate with the risk that fine tuner will dent the plate or even worse make a crack.
    3. 2:07 you can cut violin bridge with exacto knife instead of special violinmaker knife BUT you need to move the blade when cutting slightly from side to side. Hard to explain. Proper cutting must be learned by hours of training. You will never cut precisely enough working like this.
    4. No, no sand paper. It is absolutely wrong. It destroys wood grain. It makes sound transfer inferior. It is not the same as cuting bridge with the knife. This sandpaper is very rough and thick by the way. This is absolutely wrong technique how to fit a bridge.
    5. 3:15 this tool is absolutely useless. Better buy string lifter...
    6. 7:00 bridge should be flat only from the back side. if you sandpaper bridge flat from the front, it would bend soon.
7: what ugly tool inserted in the f hole. Why .... hah, because soundpost has fallen, isn't it.
Conclussion - this is tutorial how NOT REPLACE a bridge.

@@RiyaJaneYulde. Hello, I’ve just seen your video and it’s very interesting. The Aubert bridge you chose is visibly good quality just by looking at the speckles on the surface. Nevertheless, it’s only wood, and every piece is slightly different. You can assess its sound response by dropping it on a hard surface, and listening to the “ring”. In this way you can choose the bridge blank you wish to purchase. Try several and buy 3 if you can afford to.
There are many ways to fit the bridge feet to the curve of the top. I personally don’t think it matters, as long as the end result is a close fit. I do something similar to you. If you moisten the feet from your tongue, you can cut the wood more easily without slipping.
I believe the height of the bridge above the top plate is very important for sound production. Nominally 33mm. The clearance of the strings above the end of the fingerboard is important for playing in higher positions. A quality violin will have the correct neck angle , but lesser instruments may not !! Thus, if for example the violin has a shallow neck angle, prioritising the string “action”, will lead to a lower bridge, lower than 33mm. This may well have an adverse effect upon the sound, because of string tension and the string angle over the bridge. This happened to me, because I lowered the bridge and lost the sound. I know better now, and recently fitted a quality French bridge. Yours looked very nice.
How thick should the bridge be ? I think that the thicknesses available are good guides , but the final test is the sound produced through the new bridge. So I leave the bridge on the thick side and set up the strings and play . Then comes the difficult part. Are you happy with the sound ? Logic says that too much thickness will absorb and dampen the string “energy” as it passes down into the fiddle itself. If you think this is happening, then remove the bridge ( using a bridge Jack ) and remove some wood, carefully because once it’s gone, it’s gone !!
The cut outs in the bridge , I cannot give much advice, because they produce a shape visually pleasing to the eye, but how they refine the sound production, I do not know.
With a good ear, which you clearly have, achieve a sound quality you are pleased with. Stop. Now use one of your other bridge blanks and try again . See if you can achieve a better sound. This is great fun , and I would encourage every player to be able to do this for themselves. Your local luthier may charge you a lot of money for this service which may not necessarily give you the sound you want.
Edit: Please excuse me. My comments are mainly directed at encouraging players to develop the skill to fit their own bridge.
