As a tattooed goatee wearing white guy, if i wear hoodies with the hood up, I'm in the same situation. Present yourself respectfully no matter what your skin color is, and you will be in safer company. I'm not saying racism doesn't exist by any means, but im certain it isn't as prevalent as Hollywood wants us all to believe.

Thanks for the honest review, I'll be skipping this movie, I'm not into RomComs. I was just curious about the plot and message since all I saw was the trailer today for the first time.
Sounds like the movie is indirectly about itself. I enjoy David Allen Grier's work, and seeing him portray this character will be a treat, with the understanding that containing this character inside a message film, contained inside a rom-com, was the magic required to even make this movie.

hmm your review is the first positive one I've seen online to be honest. While I do have some reservations about the movie mainly because the trailer not only tends to give away too much of the film imo, but it also seems to have some plot holes to it's own logic. Granted, a lot of these plot holes might be explained in the film itself because I haven't seen it yet, so I'll reserve judgment until then. Either way, I found your review to be interesting.
I think it is a mistake to criticize a movie you have not seen. I saw it and didn't see the plot holes. Can you please explain what they are?

I think there are too many white tears masked as "film criticism", or for us black ppl, impatience with/fear of seeing a vulnerable and lost black man on screen... which I get, and that's why this isn't a laugh out loud movie for me either... but it is a good one imo
America is such a strange place
Every other review says it is the worst movie they’ve ever seen.
There are other positive reviews. But they're mainly written, rather than in video form. The problem with relying exclusively on UA-cam is the algorithm tends to focus you to specific content that reinforces whatever your ideology actually is.
This was a great movie. A lot of content creators are literaly being magical negroes for white UA-cam viewers.
Extremly racist film, switch anything they said and replace it with black people and everyone would flip tf out. Movies like this should have never been green lit
My problem with this specific type of critique is that it doesn’t require actually seeing the film to actually make it. If you contextualized your comment based on something specifically from the film then I could see you actually saw it and are responding to the film and not your perception of what you think the film is all about. As someone who saw the film, I can say that it speaks to the real experience of being the only black person in a classroom, or on a job, or in a community. Saying that you feel you have the right to be in a space but also don’t want to be stereotyped (e.g., when he is assumed to be a waiter at the art gallery) or have to speak for an entire race of people is not racist.
@@drjasonfreeman you put the context in your review, the comment that white people are the most dangerous animals. That is a deeply racist lie. Black Americans are far more dangerous to white Americans than the other way around.
Far, far more black Americans are killed by black Americans than by white Americans. Far, far more black Americans kill white Americans than white Americans kill black Americans. Even black violent criminals are less likely to be shot by police than white violent criminals, and black police more likely to shoot black suspects than white police are.
All these are supported by official statistics.

Do you REALLY think it would fly in the current year? No of course not, current hollywood would never let that fly. If you think about it, Black Directors have the freedom to be openly racist against white people in their movies and be celebrated for it e.g. Get Out. Aren't you people tired of these message movies? Slavery was abolished 200 years ago. Maybe move on and make a movie that isn't a Racebaiting hitpiece.

I was looking for a positive review and I am very happy I got one finally. I felt connected to the movie and I was surprised to find a lot of negative reviews. I think the internet reviews are getting a bit tricky with people talking staff with with an unknown motives. Thank you and you deserve more subscribers. To me the message of the movie is more important than the production cost and expensive casting.

Finally someone who reviewed it properly. You really saw the films message for what it really is. It's not your stereotypical black portrayed movie that's always shoved down our throat. If anything this movie is about the black people that are called white washed by our own community instead of smart and how we try so hard to represent another aspect of us other than. Your hood, violent,loud, you dress unpresentable and your only good for prison bars to your only going to succeed by doing sports or being a rapper or drug dealer. Mike Tyson said it best. I never found success as a black man, i found success by learning how to navigate the white man's to success as a black man or similar to this. This movie is telling us what some black people have done to get us where we are now, making white people feel safe and we have benefited "somewhat" and the carrots they have dangled in front of us mystifies us into just smiling contently about what"they" wants us to be successful in and we ultimately become cool with
Thanks for a good review. I saw and liked the movie. But I think you missed the final scene. It is the best part of the movie that monologue and also the response to it by the others around it, so clueless that they were not getting what he was trying to say. But if you notice at the very last scene the girl also quits the society to which she belongs: "wives and girlfriends who are trying to please" (or something like that). I think it adds depth to show that there are other "magical" groups that can be tiptoeing around the "privileged". Me being a woman, I totally got what they were saying about the change in her also.
The only thing I don't agree with you is that I find this one a bit funnier than American Fiction, because of the fantasy world in it, but both are good.
I think it is a movie that should be seen, paying attention to what it really says with an open mind, by every white person also.
BTW I am (genetically) white but I don't identify as such because I'm an immigrant and have an accent so as soon as I say anything I'm asked where I am from and seen as "the other". Also I have been learning about the terrible events in the history of this country only recently and I feel like I see what is going on with an added perspective of not being part of it. I'm just saying this to clarify why I commented this way. And I think the reason why white people are not liking the movie is because they don't want to hear how self centered they are.

Not a weird question at all. My personal take is that there is a whole group of people on the internet to make money on outrage on both the right and the left. And if a movie doesn't fit their ideological worldview, they're going to attack it without actually seeing what the movie is actually about.
Hi there. If it makes you feel better, me as a white woman, would feel the same if an angry white man in a hoody got close to me too. I honestly care not about color, it is how they present. In our town I have more issues with white men,and have been defended/protected more by black men in my life in general. Not saying white men won't defend me, LOL. And I don't feel these days taht uncomfortable white women are cared about at all, see planet fitness,just sharing perspective as I enjoyed yours and we should do more sharing of perspectives these days.

Thank you so much for your honest and real response to this film. To many people are commenting about how racist it is due to how uncomfortable it makes them feel. As a black, I felt like I had a voice in a film that spoke up for black people like me!
I think you are confusing "uncomfortable" with "sad."
