    Baton diplomacy so good he had to go for a double whammy with the title.

    Some notes:
    1) Be careful about “parking” units on corners at the end of a turn, because they are at high risk for angled shots where they don’t benefit from cover. So, unless you want them overwatching from the corner, pull them back at least one space to reduce risk.
    2) If the soldier is behind the one of the various types of impenetrable walls, it might sometimes be necessary to move them back two spaces from the end of the wall/fence to have them in complete cover and out of the way of angled shots. The benefit, though, is that you don’t necessarily really have to crouch them, thus saving both 4 TUs in that turn and another 4 in the next turn, because they don’t have to get up from the crouch before moving.
    3) As the mesmerising trait only applies to missed shots and only to soldiers, not the MARS, it makes sense to fire on mesmerising aliens with the latter first. This jives with my prime use of the MARS, which is to strip cover and soften up aliens, leaving better shots (and the benefit of the kills) to my soldiers.
    4) My third use of the MARS is to ram through walls, creating new entry points without wasting explosives, which I prefer to use, like the MARS, to strip cover and soften up the aliens. Furthermore, if the MARS triggers a reaction shot when crashing through the wall, it can usually soak it up and won’t cost or take any time to repair.
    5) It seems that both aliens and Cleaners have a tendency to prioritise targeting the MARS when firing during their own turn (though I’m not absolutely sure of this). This could potentially be exploited to redirect their fire away from your vulnerable meat bags.
    6) Finally, I’ve just tested something today that might be important:
    It seems as climbing to the top of a ladder AND NOT MOVING ANY FURTHER doesn’t seem to trigger reaction fire, nor will climbing back down the ladder again out of sight do so.
    Elaboration/explanation:
    I had a sniper “parked” behind a shipping container with a ladder in one of the Cleaner missions (where you have to kill/capture an alien) after the reinforcements were triggered. Now, I play on a lower difficulty, so I don’t think the Cleaners/aliens move quite as aggressively, but this allowed me to test the reaction fire thing.
    Two or three turns in a row, when I was almost certain (and turned out to be correct) that there were Cleaners visible from the top of the container, I moved my sniper from the cover behind it where he (and they) were out of sight to the top of the ladder on top of the container. Here he saw 1-2 Cleaners, who sometimes seemed to have moved, sometimes not, but then I moved back out of sight again.
    Only moving to the space at the top of the ladder resulted in no reaction fire, climbing back down the ladder the same way he’d come up didn’t trigger it either, and I’m fairly certain the Cleaners had TU’s available for reaction fire during at least some of these turns.

    • @DebatingWombat
      @DebatingWombat Рік тому +1

      A further note on 1) and 2) is that a good use of the “CTRL targeting” function is to test from which angle you can overwatch shoot unwelcome guests and, not least, from which angles you might be hit in return and thus whether you are out of potential lines of fire when you’re behind a building, wall or similarly impenetrable object that block line of sight/fire.

    • @Ericshadowblade
      @Ericshadowblade Рік тому

      So the reaction fire algorithm only triggers from horizontal movement. Climbing ladders is vertical movement and The ladder top is considered horizontial to be the same square from the ladder base from which no over watch is triggered. Moving out of that square would, of course, trigger a potential overwatch

    I think you should place your base somewhere with higher panic so you can uncover and resolve more events there to reduce panic.
    Your second base should be far away from your first one. I think UFO’s actually move around the map, even when unrevealed, so having two bases close together reduces chances of ufo moving into your radar if it’s on the other half of the world. Therefore, Asia might not be a good place to put it.
    Spacing your bases out also reduces travel time since you will cover opposite sides of the world.
    Therefore, in the long run, I think putting it in North America is a good idea.
    Alternatively, somewhere around Mongolia is good too since it would cover two regions, which both have high panic right now.

    I first want to say glad to see another video from you, second looking at the strategic map I say the best place to put your next base would be either in Mexico more specifically to Yucatan to cover the western hemisphere or Mongolia to cover more of Northern Asia or Southern China / Vietnam to cover Southeast Asia/ parts of Oceania, aside from that I say just sit on that money and wait so you could get that base near or at fully built once it's finished

    1. Skip making accelerated weapons, save your alloys for a few warden armor & laser weapons early game. Save for your Dragonfly (12 seater transport), its 500k, 50 alloys & 30 alenium. You dont have to suit up your entire team, you can do 4 to 6 per tech because armor becomes obsolete pretty fast. Warden < Guardian < Exo (ive only made it to exo so far =P)
    2. Need a 4th Hangar & extra lab ASAP.
    3. Only make around 4 laser weapons to start, machine gun lasers are OPed early game, give them to the best accuracy soldiers - i dont even use snipers. Save for a new transport (DRAGONFLY) that will seat 12. You will also need materials for your new interceptors & base/modules/equip upgrades
    4. As fun as a MARS platform is, it takes away XP from your soldiers - thats 1 extra soldier leveling up if you dont use a MARS. They are also not as durable as we'd like, cost 250k to repair if destroyed in mission. Cash is hard to come by if you are building/upgrading aggresively. My initial base is pretty much done between day 60 to 90.
    5. Try to use the best armor/plate module for your soldiers even at the expense of negative accuracy rating & less TUs. A 1 to 2 TU penalty is not that bad. Most of the time your soldier can take over 2 hits from enemy fire if they are armored enough.
    6. Bad accuracy soldiers are ok, give them the assault kit. They can be your shield units too, either way you will need canon fodder if you play in higher difficulty especially in battles where theres a turn limit.
    7. Suppressing an enemy is a good defensive tactic, if you dont kill them in your turn - they will start the next turn with only HALF their TUs (at most). Flash bang grenade and full auto machine gun fire are your best friend. Be careful, your soldiers can get suppressed from friendlies if they are in the field of fire.
    8. Scout tactic works, have your worst soldiers scout enemy positions - just make sure you have enough TUs to backtrack to a safe cover once you find an enemy, then move your fire teams towards that enemy and make sure you give them all enough TUs for reactionary fire.
    9. Cleaner cells in Florida and HongKong docks can be rough, but they are much easier with laser weapons and a Dragonfly transport.
    10. Once your Dragonfly (thats why build your 4th hangar ASAP) is done, decom your old SKYHAWK and save the hangar space for a new interceptor (Phantom).
    11. Avoid NIGHT battles, normally you have a couple of days to reach a hot spot, you can always wait until its daytime before landing your transport.
    Game becomes alot easier when you have a couple guys reach 100 accuracy.
    Good Hunting!

    When you intend to use smoke as cover for your units, don't aim directly at the target, as this places them in the middle of the smoke. Since accuracy decreases for each square of smoke that the enemy has to shoot through, you're better off throwing the smoke in front of them, so they have to shoot through most, or even the entire smoke cloud. When you put them in the middle, they only have to shoot through half of it.

    [Unsure of how much you know, but from watching other people on easier difficulties] When you build your second base you can simultaneously build as many facilities as you want. So if the base takes say 10 days to build, you can immediately build power and radar, which will come online 2 and 10 days after the base is finished (instead of 12 and 20).
    As a result, it might be difficult to keep much money in reserve if you also want to build a second base. While in x-com as I'm used to a base can take months to fully come online, in this it can all be built over a single month, including getting hangers and filling them with interceptors. Also if you have the money for it, you can place bases for their third radar since you can build all three radars in the same time it takes to build 1 out of a new base.
    My suggestion for a base is north or latin america, with asia as the potential third base. I usually just do it this way because that's how I've always done it, but looking at it strategically.
    NA has the highest current panic
    NA is a large contributor to your monthly funding
    Your third radar, when it comes online, will cover bits of soviet and asia.
    If you build in Asia, you cover 4 regions completely but leave 2 completely unguarded.
    If you build in either of the Americas, you cover 3-4 regions completely and 2-3 regions partially. (depending on how much of Latin/North America you cover with the one base)
    Enjoying the videos. It's fun to see someone take to these missions with a lot more care and strategy.

Be aware, I've seen some people say that mag weapons are worthless and laser weapons are the way to go for the early game. Lasers apparently have crap ammo capacity, but they offer an aim bonus.

      @DebatingWombat Рік тому +1

      @@DSMTyralion No, sadly soldier weapons have to be built in the number you wish to use, not as a general upgrade of all weapons.
      In the debate over whether it’s worth researching magnetic weapons, it should be noted that this immediately allows your engineers to start on upgrading aircraft cannon.
      By contrast, researching laser weapons “only” gives you access to the infantry weapons, while aircraft (and base defence) laser weaponry must be researched separately and subsequently (as “heavy lasers”).
      In terms of infantry weapons, I’m currently about to try out magnetic vs. lasers for different soldier classes.
      I lean towards laser machine guns due to their greater armour stripping effect, because the MG will often be one of the first to fire in order to try to suppress the target and the reduced ammo capacity is not too bad on laser MGs (30 rounds). In addition, the laser accuracy bonus potentially allows the use of slightly less accurate soldiers as heavies, though you still need them to have a decent accuracy.
      By contrast, I think there is an argument for magnetic shotguns and sniper rifles due to greater armour penetration and their laser variants having very low ammo capacity (4 and 3 rounds, respectively).
      Assault soldiers are more likely to run into an armoured enemy at close range with less options for softening them up via armour stripping and are thus probably better off trying to penetrate the armour. While the bonus accuracy tilts in favour of laser shotguns, having only 4 rounds, as opposed to 8 in the magnetic version, seems a bit iffy. But 4 rounds with greater accuracy might be enough, so I’m building both magnetic and laser shotguns.
      The snipers sometimes takes the first shot or the second after the MG and if the alien still has a lot of armour, penetrating it might be better than stripping it. The greater armour stripping is useful for snipers, though, and I might be more into laser sniper rifles if not for them having only 3 rounds between reloads, which seems awfully little to me, and as the laser accuracy bonus is capped, it’s unlikely to benefit snipers. Still, I’m building both magnetic and laser sniper rifles and will be trying them out.

    • @DebatingWombat
      @DebatingWombat Рік тому +1

      Having played around a bit, the low ammo capacity of laser sniper rifles and shotguns is indeed a problem, especially if you’re on one of the missions where you have to push aggressively due to a time limit. This is also the case for those who like to use the 3-round burst mode on the ordinary laser rifle.
      The sniper rifle is particularly problematic, though, because reloading it means not having sufficient TUs for a shot during the turn you’re reloading.
      This is mitigated somewhat once you get your lasers upgraded to do more damage and use recharging batteries, but that requires both an extra research project (plasma weapons) and a subsequent engineering project. Like the aircraft cannon, however, the recharging battery engineering project upgrades all lasers, but at a substantial onetime cost.
      Overall impression: You might try to “get over the hump” by going full laser and tough it out until you get them upgraded. Still, that takes time and money, while the lower cost of magnetic weapons gives them a decent, early game niche as being “good enough”.
      The higher weight of magnetic weapons compared to the basic ones essentially amounts to foregoing a single grenade, which should be feasible and worth it for the extra damage. Also, because of the low ammo capacity of lasers, you usually have to take more reloads, which tends to amount to a total weight of laser weapon + ammo that is roughly similar to a magnetic weapon + ammo.
      However, when it comes to machine guns, I’d definitely skip magnetic ones in favour of lasers. This is not only due to the factors mentioned earlier, but also the fact that the thermal damage is twice as effective at clearing terrain as ballistic damage. Given the role of MGs as “first shooters”, that’s another huge point in favour of lasers, because is increases the chance of clearing the aliens’/Cleaners’ cover before the next soldier takes a shot.

    So speaking from XCOM experience:
    -I usually put my first base more or less where yours is, followed by a second in Central America to cover the US and as much of South America as I can.
    -Money comes and goes, there's not that much reason to hoard it. Buy the accelerated cannons, and also some more solders.
    -That being said, bases are expensive and time-consuming to set up, so I wouldn't expect to see the second base doing anything for a while

    • @Phrosphor
      @Phrosphor  Рік тому

      First goal for the second base is to get a second Interceptor team up and running, after that we probably need to think of a specialisation.

    • @manyheadedmishaps6182

      Thing is, once you've got interceptors, you'll possibly start attracting alien attention to the ships they're losing, so you need soldiers and defenses in case you get attacked, then you might as well have a second dropship, and all that probably requires some manufacturing capacity....
      I've generally found (again, XCOM not Xenonauts) that aircraft-capable bases tend to be unspecialized, with manufacturing, troopship, and air capabilities (which also means you can keep functioning if the main base goes down), while any base that's going to be dedicated to a specialization probably doesn't get planes, since they are either very risky or require a whole slew of ancillary capabilities that support just making it a full-on second main base.

    Tbh, having the skyranger called carnival seems cool -inspired by wingman i presume- but my mental image is a little bit tainted since i keep thinking of a kia Carnival, which is a little uncool.
    I do think North america or south america ish makes a bit more sense, since russia/china is already covered a bit by your current base. Thematically also makes sense in terms of balancing politics from the USSR vs US

      The Kia Carnival is not a “hot” car but it is quite nice.

    Personally I would build the New Base where the Panic is highest, but I am new to this game, so might not be the most optimal.

    Apology for the delays _not_ accepted. Get back to the content mines, Phrosphor! Don't make me get the taser!
    edit: Also, next base should be in East Asia. Somewhere in the islands, where you can cover most of mainland Asia and Australia. Personally I'm more concerned with covering that area than the vast Siberian wasteland of eastern Russia, seems like there isn't much there that needs protecting compared to the 2+ billion people in India and China.

    Shouldn’t we keep the MARS as William Wall-e since you just rebuilt them?

    750000 for a base but the base has nothing it. You need over 2mil easy to start a new base.
