I have taken to cutting the main stem with trees under 8” or so in diameter to about 3’ hi, and then pruning like an open-centered vase peach. Tons of light and lots of fruit within reach! The pruning never ends

Salix, populus, and also alnus all make that bridge, so N fixing alders are also a huge double win
