    The way my coach helped me transition from griping the bow to sling is by hanging the bow by a string while he holding it standing on the side. I was told to not grip the bow and have the relaxed position. Once I shot the arrow, the bow would fall out and he would catch it. All in a safe way of course. It took few tries to break the mental block that its OK to let the bow fly from your hands after the shot. Once you get past that mental block, you will begin to trust the sling.
    Also as a tip: Use flat cotton shoelace rather than nylon based shoelace to make your sling. Nylon based shoelaces tend to slip and slide and do not loop well on your fingers making it uncomfortable.

    totally timely. Worked with coach this morning on a slight alteration of my grip. It is good to see you illustrate it here from several angles. we did some slingless shots to reinforce the allowing the bow to drop and then be caught be coach. I am loving this class series and the two coaches teach exactly the way I like to learn.

    omg earlier i was doing backyard shooting with homemade pvc bow and i was "relaxing" my hand and the blow literally jumped out of hands. It was a bullseye so was happy but i thought something was wrong with my form or how i made the bow. At least i know now that too much tension in hand is bad.
    anyway great video!

    Great video, Nu Sensei. I'm new to the archery game, and I found this really informative. I've also noticed the inconsistencies that creep in when you over-grip the bow, especially when I bought my own bow which had a different riser to what I had been previously shooting. I am hoping that going down the route of using a wrist or finger sling will give me the confidence to develop, practice, and reinforce the relaxed grip, and hopefully not cop too much flack from others who don't use them. :)

Actually had an old compound fall off my wrist while using the wrist sling....havent had a bow fall while using a finger sling yet lol i got one made with paracord so it just slides on and off. Not as difficult to put on in the stand as much as u would think.

    I'm a barebow archer and I learned very quickly the more relaxed my bow hand the better my shot, so for a while, I would shoot with the bow just being held by the tension between my bow hand putting pressure on the grip and the string being drawn. I trained myself to catch the bow before it flew out of my hand. this was pretty effective for me for a while until I eventually did not catch the bow. fortunately, its an inexpensive bow owned by my school and there was no damage. That also happened to be an incredible shot. so I started using a butterfly sling. it works, but if I'm not careful about tightening it, it can fall off when the bow jumps and consequently the bow falls. a word of warning, once you untrain the catch instinct if you forget your sling or it falls off (I've done both) you won't catch the bow, so pay attention.

    • @dick-gs9tb
      @dick-gs9tb 8 років тому +1

      Whatever floats your boat and so on, but I'd be careful with that. Shooting with a release aid places your arm in an angle which is not optimized for holding the full draw weight without the let-off you'd get from a compound bow. It puts your arm and shoulder under more stress, which could result in injuries leaving you unable to shoot your bow at all.

    I started using a sling very early on in my "Archery-career".. haven't shot without it eversince.. well.. i forgot to put it on once.. and i had to pick up my bow from 6 meters distance.. boy..did she jump out of my hand!..
    I make my own now, by making a loop from 28 Cm of Paracord, sown together in the middle, with an O-ring on either side to create an adjustable "eye" for my thumb and indes finger..

    After being an occasional archer for about two years, I finally have the chance to dedicate a bit more time to the sport and thought I'd have a go at using a sling. Whereas I very seldom used to suffer from "string slap", I now have a big bruise on my arm as I get hit by the string on almost every shot. I have the feeling this is caused by the bow jumping forward since I'm not holding it tightly any more, but have no idea how to overcome this. Do you (or anyone else reading this) have any advice on what I could/should change, or do I just have to live with it and start wearing an arm guard?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @leihuitong4216
      @leihuitong4216 3 роки тому

      As a level 1 instructor, I have found the best way to counter this "string slap" is to wear an arm guard, in my opinion, but if you do not want to wear one, the best way to counter this would be to get your bow arm out of the way. Basically, when most people are shooting, the hollow on the other side of the elbow is facing up, meaning that the string might be able to catch on it. Your objective is to make it perpendicular to the ground, by turning the hollow until it is directly perpendicular. Keep in mind that your hand which is holding the bow needs to be in the position - when trying this, get into that position, without a bow, turn your elbow first so that the hollow is perpendicular to the ground, then use your right hand to hold it in place. Once that is done, adjust your bow hand so that it is in the correct position. Hope that helps!

    not every "barebow" is usable with a sling tho. if i'd use one the bow would jump forward a bit, and then slide down so i have the sight window in my hand! lacking a portion of wood above the webbing between thumb/finger that will usually prevent it

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  7 років тому

      If you're in the woods, you're likely not going to want the bow tied to your hand, which is why people who go stumping or hunting normally don't use one.

  • @shayden5289
    @shayden5289 8 років тому

    Now, what if your fingers, at the 'ideal rest', naturally form the 'spear-point' shape? The fingers on my left hand tend to be straighter than those on my right naturally, so when I hold my bow(even if it is a compound) at my most relaxed grip possible, my fingers naturally straighten. Should I strive to train my muscles to create a curl in my fingers, or since this is the natural position for my hand is this fine?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  8 років тому

      As long as there is no tension in your fingers, this is fine. It isn't the shape of the hand that determines whether or not the grip is relaxed. However, fingers do not naturally straighten when relaxed. Examine your hand at rest right now. This should be the same amount of tension in your bow hand when you shoot.

    Do you think there is a reason that most top level archers choose to make a DIY sling out of a shoelace instead of the commercially available slings? I've actually stopped myself buying a premade one and started using a shoelace because I'm just assuming the pros know something I don't lol. Or it might be just a style choice.

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  8 років тому +1

      Mostly simplicity and comfort. The commercial ones can be fidgety, especially the butterfly-style ones. In comparison, it's so easy to tie a sling together with a material and colour of your liking. There's otherwise no advantage.

    • @davidcastle3292
      @davidcastle3292 7 років тому

      I make sell and use paracord fingerslings, one point of interest is the standard AAE/ CR style work really well for compound(modern) that have a very small grip like my PSE Xpression, on my PSE X Appeal, or other built up grip they can be a bit tight around the front. i did play around a bit and now make a version that is an inch longer and it works really well. that being said, and being bad for business :) is a shoe lace works just as well.
      i find the videos to be an excellent resource Nu, cheers.

    I'm very confused. You said shooting barebow, the bow is typically back heavy and fall backward. So if I use the finger sling, I can expect to either get cracked in the skull or shoulder with every shot. At the same time you keep emphasizing the importance of the sling. By this logic, barebow shoot be avoided, nei?

    • @NUSensei

      A barebow will not spin around and knock you out. It will typically sit in your hand and rock back on release.

    • @nordikkai7185

      It's completely possible to handle a bow with a loose grip or even a non-existant grip while on the draw and it's being pulled back to rest in your hand. You just have to remember to tighten your grip as you loose the arrow to prevent dropping it. I do this all the time with my less expensive bow, it's just a habit

      I dropped mine after a shot (having forgot the sling), but I did manage to land a 10 on that first warmup shot :-)

      unfortunately they just don't make finger slings that are better than something as easy, simple, and adjustable as a shoelace fingersling... its unfortunate but thats the reality haha

    This video wasn't helpful to me at all because you only spent 16 seconds talking about wrist slings, but it was very informative otherwise.
