      @@andyH_England umm ? who tho 16GB ram is physically 16gig of ram, yeah you can optimize your OS and use fast swap but 16gig is 16gig. idk how apple got this into peoples head that 8gb on windows is 16gig on mac, your average consumer might not notice it coz well swap exists, but any dev will 100% feel the nerf that 8gig of ram gives.

      @@siliconhawk Yes, you are correct. If your workflow is RAM-intensive, like batch photo editing then swap isn’t advised. You need as much RAM as you can afford. But for many of us that use the MB Air for office and casual usage 8GB with swap and compressed RAM can easily be sufficient.

      @@andyH_England 16 is 16, doesn't matter the OS you are using. since you will use 3rd party apps and that what will eat your ram.
      since you will mostly browse the web which (the browser) will eat a lot of ram, 16 is optimal and 8 the the bare minimum, if you will browse the web and use another app besides the browser, 16 is absolutely necessary.

    Respectfully, they already fixed the translation layer a while ago. The testing on the Voltara hardware was useful, but that machine was still underpowered. If you want a better example of how that’ll run, do some tests in parallels on Windows on ARM. Parallels for WoA is entirely reliant on that windows x86 translation layer. It’s actually great already, and now the hardware is stepping up.

      While I'm rooting for Intel, it surely won't be 50% faster or more powerful than Snapdragon X Elite. Because Lunar Lake is quite low power, and it has few cores. I think it will be a very good chip though, M-chips levels of battery, toe to toe in performance for most metrics. And a great handheld chip.
      Intel Arrow Lake is apparently the one with high number of cores and big performance, with less emphasis on low energy. I mean, it won't need the amounts that Raptor Lake did, but it won't run well at 20W, more like 40-100W. For 16-18" laptops it should be a beast. I hope. With all these battery improvements your laptop can cook itself in a backpack even longer thanks to broken sleep mode in windows

    • @crelliseng
      @crelliseng 3 місяці тому

      To be fair, it’s a bios issue and not entirely Windows fault. After windows 10 laptop manufacturers started defaulting to s0 sleep instead of s3 sleep when plugged into a charger. The issue is the bios doesn’t recognize when the laptop gets unplugged so it keeps it in the same internet connected modern standby if you put it to sleep before unplugging it. So if you get a notification while your laptop is in your backpack it wakes up to try and alert you then never goes back to sleep since it’s in an undefined state now. However, if you unplug your laptop before closing it/put it to sleep it will always default to the proper sleep mode and be fine.

    • @ruffzy4073
      @ruffzy4073 3 місяці тому

      @@crelliseng then if windows is awaken, it can determine if the lid is closed and put it to sleep mode again. Or they can just disable internet connection in sleep mode, tbh can't see why they even added it. Or windows can monitor the charging state alongside the internet connection. I think Microsoft would definitely find a workaround, if they wished to.

    • @crelliseng
      @crelliseng 3 місяці тому

      @@ruffzy4073 again, it’s a BIOS level issue. Microsoft made the features and the OEMs implemented them. Maybe Windows could override the BIOS settings based on their lid detection state and charging state? Someone from Microsoft commented on Linus’ video on the topic a few years ago, explaining exactly what was happening. But it was unclear if it was something they could fix on their end.
      I’m assuming it still happens based on this comment? I haven’t had a laptop roast in my backpack since it started back in 2015 because I always unplug my laptop before closing the lid. Once I formed that habit it became a none issue to me.

    I can't tell you how excited I am for these SnapDragon Laptops.
    I have an XPS 13 Plus and a 14' M1 Pro MacBook.
    I absolutely love Windows, the absolutely stunning, sexy and premium look, feel and build of the XPS. And that OLED Display with no Bezels? Ohh my God.
    But I hate its battery life. I've never gotten more than 4-5 hours with it.
    My MacBook gives me more than 8-9 hours [at times even 10], with the exact same applications and stuff running on it.
    Which is insane. Also factor in that the XPS only has a 60Hz Display, as opposed to my MacBook which runs at 120Hz. And the MacBook has a slightly larger Display as well ofc.
    If SnapDragon can bring this level of efficiency and battery life to Windows laptops, I'm definitely picking one up.

      This is a complete downgrade. That arm64 push is here to force again another obsolescence wave. Cuz, power consumption is their only argument to justify those chips. Will keep my x86 current system. Yes, it's way hungry compared to those arm chips. But comes with a level of compatibility ARM chips will take years to actually be considered "usable".
      Only 10% of market apps natively compatible. 90% emulated and badly ported. And they are actually being charged more than a x86 machine with the same specs.

      You'll still have to use work arounds, as they still wouldn't be designed for mac. I also doubt devs will develop for these mobile laptops when the majority of the market will still be on x86.
      Playstation is plugged in at all times, so there's literally no reason for them to rush to arm. Would screw any backwards compatible they had too. The only devices really benefitting from this are mobile devices that need to have good battery life.

    Why is Microsoft comparing the Surface models with a Snapdragon X (Elite) CPU to the MacBook Air? The MacBook AIr is an entry level MacBook. It will be interesting to see a review of these new laptops, but I'm more interested in Microsoft porting its applications to ARM.
    I've been running a beta version of Windows 11 ARM for months in a VM on my M3 MacBook Pro MAX. While it runs without noticeable slowdown, it doesn't run all software needed for a complete development environment to write software targeting SQL Server (and Microsoft has yet to port all of its applications to ARM).
