  • Hey guys, we're back with some milk recording for you all. We typically milk record about 4 to 5 times a year. It provides us with invaluable information about the production of each of our cows. It helps us with making lots of decision on the farm, particularly around breeding.
    We might actually do a video on that - how we use the milk recording results to select bulls etc. Let us know if that's something you'd like to see!
    As always, please do give it a thumbs up if you enjoyed the video - it really helps us. And subscribe if you'd like to stay up to date with the farm.
    Lots of love,
    PK, MK & Freya xx

    Great video guys..we've used them DIY meters our last 2 recordings..find them a great job..how are ye for grass and silage?..been a great year for grass down here in west cork

      Hi David. Thanks a mil, glad you liked it! 😊
      Ya they’re a good job alright, pretty straight forward to operate.
      We’re not too bad, wouldn’t have as much grass this autumn as other years but we’re managing fine. We should have enough silage for a 5 month winter so hopefully we don’t need it all 😅 Great to hear that, are ye hoping to keep the cows out into November weather permitting?

    Neat system ,do you hire the meters & how often do you record .Thanks

    • @keanefamilyfarm
      @keanefamilyfarm  3 роки тому +2

      Yes we hire the meters from Progressive Genetics. They drop them off and we usually have them for a few days.
      We milk record about 4 - 5 times a year. This was number 4 so we’ll probably get another recording in before the end of the year 😊

    USA dairy guy. What is size of herd? Average liters per day? What day of grazing season? Have been working with team to look at peak yields and annual yields. Among 1.5 million Holstein and Jersey, peak yields are reaching about 112 kg per day 3X. Jerseys a bit lower than Holsteins at 99th percentile. I work with colleagues in Wales and Liverpool among others.

    • @keanefamilyfarm
      @keanefamilyfarm  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Jack! Thanks for your comment. We milk 140 cows and they average about 5,700 litres/year or just over 30 litres/day at peak milk production. We milk twice a day.
      That sounds like very interesting research. We have about 50% Holstein Friesians and 50% Jersey crosses in the herd and would notice the difference in litres but the higher solids in the crosses often makes up for that loss. Would be interested to hear more about your research. Best of luck with it 😊

      Hi Pádraig. Thanks a million, glad you liked it 😊 Yes we scanned a couple of weeks ago and ended up with 7% empty after 11 weeks so we were very happy with that.

    What times are ye milking at now and do ye take students from the ag college's

    • @keanefamilyfarm
      @keanefamilyfarm  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Killian. We’re milking at 6am at the moment as we have some help back on the farm now. We’re also down to 6 rows so milking doesn’t take longer then 1.5 hours now 😊 Getting lazy with the darker mornings 😅
      We have taken students in the past but probably won’t be at the moment due to COVID (we live with Pádraig’s parents who are both over 70 so have to be a little bit more careful) 👍🏼

    "get you're milk samples., 5 for fifty (50p)". Do you feed the cows extra meal or milk early the day before to bump up the yeild readings for the recording?

    • @keanefamilyfarm
      @keanefamilyfarm  3 роки тому

      No we like to keep them on the same amount of supplementation so that we have a good idea of what they’re producing & this helps inform lots of other decisions on the farm (grass decisions, breeding etc.) 😄👍🏼

      Hi Cormac. Fair play doing it 6 times a year! I’d like to do it more but I agree, it’s a bit of an annoying job alright 😅
      We usually do 4-5 times a year. This was number 4 so we’ll probably get another one in before the end of the year 👍🏼

    • @keanefamilyfarm

      We got the tray from Progressive Genetics. We hire the milk meters from them as well so they provide the tray & bottles etc.

    I don't know if you look at other Dairy Farming web sites. I follow a young chap in Saskatchewan Canada, he goes by the name of 'SaskDuch Kid' ua-cam.com/channels/0iNuhadNDm2nIqLTao85YQ.html is the link to his UA-cam channel. His operation is very different to yours but they still have the same goal of producing a quality milk product and he is good with his videos.
