Dude, 50 year old single woman here, watching all three parts. Having completely remodeled a big house, I can and will absolutely do this. You just made my day. Thank you for the videos.
You got me. Im subbed. Im fixing to do the same thing in south Louisiana in about 6 months. Cant wait to get started. The biggest thing i have to worry about here is hurricanes. Ive been in 17 so far. Im 62 and fixing to re marry to a gal that is half my age. Im not on any meds and I dont go to the doctor. I take vitimans for a horse. Im in shape and can still do military hikes. I am a Cajun and I love my life. I live every day like its my last but I learn like I will live forever. Life is good in Cajun country. Charles
the 'i can't rant' was epic and needed to be said. I'm a finance guy, for years my best tools have been my wallet & cell phone. but the more I DIY things, the more I see how capable I am. love your videos, thx for doing what you do 🙏🏻
I couldn't said it better! That was the best breakdown I've ever heard and I can't wait to find my little piece of land to build a very small cabin. These are "My People"!
I’m a 58 year old mother who built my own cabin with help only standing up the walls and putting up the rafters. I did everything else myself. I’d only built bird houses in my youth and garden boxes later in life prior to building my cabin. It’s a great little get away. Thank you for filming and thank you for encouraging others.
My husband and I bought an acre of land 4 years ago for 25k and owner financed it for 3 years. We bought a bus and converted it and we've lived in it for since we've lived here until we built our house. Unfortunately a few months after we first moved here I started getting really sick. I ended up needing to have major abdominal surgeries and was bed bound for over 2 years. It destroyed us financially and completely put all our plans on halt. The past year I've finally started to see progress little by little with my health, but I've had to push myself really hard to get better and start rebuilding my strength. We started a landscaping business and it's done well and we're finally picking up the pieces from the last few years. We've started the process to build our house and should be done by the end of the year. We're doing everything ourselves as we make money and by the time our house is built it will be worth almost 300k with no mortgage. Even with what we've been through we're still moving forward with building our house. It can be done. You may need to sacrifice a lot, but in the end it's worth it
My dad was a master carpenter. Taught me everything I know. I have cerebral palsy that affects the entire right side of my body but my old man taught me that I can do anything that anyone else can. It just takes a little effort and some Ingenuity. It may take me a bit longer and I might be in a lot of pain but I will get the job done! I love your channel Dave! You inspire me!
GOD BLESS You AND Your Dad!!! I have physical disabilities as well - but I will NOT let it stop me from accomplishing what I want to do... yes, it will take me longer and lots of pain... but it WILL be worth it.

Im an 70 year old man with an 70 year old wife and we built our homestead by ourselves we make extra money with a sawmill most of our house was built with stuff I collected or made on the sawmill. We started our homestead when we were 50 its now paid off. Ive been watching you and Brooks videos since you started and your parents will all ways be proud of you !
Old Jeep, used tools, homemade equipment, patched clothing, homemade clothes. Everything I own is paid for in cash. Right there with you, thank you for supporting the can do additude.
DARN TOOTIN!!!! HAHAHA!!! Ain't it great??!? The look on a face when they hear that I've never had a payment of any kind or a credit card ever in 45 years, yet they envy all I have and what I'm able to do, it's priceless!!!! That's the best stuff there, that's the stuff that CAN'T be bought! I love not having to ask anyone for help, in as many ways as humanly possible, sometimes I wonder why there aren't more folks like us in the world!! Why are people ok with being unable to change the oil? Or replace their water heater??? Both require two, maybe three tools. All of which are 20 bucks or less and are usually in your home already!!!! Oh well, just means there are endless opportunities for us opening businesses or even inventing new things to make life easier and more lazy for the ones who "can't"!!!
Hi. I used to live in North Pole. My daughter and I used to hit the dump Pavillions. We were at Foxx at their's once. I gut out of my car and started up to it. There were huge sheets of packing paper covering half the floor of the Pavillion . Just as I got to it a big German Shepard came running out from under those papers and ran up into the back of a vehicle and before I could catch my breath, here came the fellow you must be talking about. He ran on his hands, climbed up into the back and in seconds they were gone. He had long hair and a beard. I also have never forgotten him. He is a marvel. You are the first person I have talked to who has seen him. By the way, we built our little cabin in North Pole for around three thousand dollars, thanks to all of the good usable lumber in dumpsters. God bless.
My whole life I have had bouts of depression, but This time... I am kicking that dirty rotten life thief to the curb! I learned something from an old friend who did "child counseling" in schools for many years, I was visiting her office where she had a wall plaque : " It's Not what happens that upsets you... It's how you choose to think about it" After thinking that over I decided I can simple choose to think of all of these WORLD view completely differently!!! So I choose to think of all the OPPORTUNITY to live BETTER and give up old bad habits :) No more TV LOL... Loving it!!
I’m really appreciating this man’s outlook on life and what I consider the right attitude. Thank you for sharing this project and sharing your insights with others.
I'm a nurse who has worked with spinal cord injury patients for years. Everyone's recovery story is different. Everyone's reaction to the loss of their mobility is different. But I've seen people after injury finish school, engage in sports, even to the Olympic level, start successful businesses, get married, have children, etcetera. Some of the problem is self-defeatist attitude, but some of it is not having access to resources, or simply not knowing resources are available. Having said all that, you're right that many of us create our own obstacles. That's always been true. It's sometimes sobering to really count your blessings and realize that there are more possibilities out there that we prevent ourselves from seeing because of our own insecurities and such.
The biggest problem, is having the money for the land to build on. Land owners have gotten greedy and hiked up the prices for land because of the people that want to live off grid.
@@TheKydyr it doesn't change the basic message that he was trying to impart here I think. Basically, identify what is important to you and work towards that goal. Old car, old truck, patched up clothes, cheap cell phone on a cheap plan. It feels like in today's society we are measured by our possessions so everybody strives to get the latest thing. Screw the latest thing, figure out what you actually want and need and work towards that goal. I admire the message he was passing on.
What amazes me is not his carpentry and building skills (though they are impressive) but rather, he was able to get a cute girl to stay with him and live in a tent. Seriously. That he was able to do so with no mcmansion, no fancy car, no oodles of money, no drugs, no cocaine....well done, sir.
@@21stCenturySpaceOdyssey not all girls are shallow and high maintenance. Maybe if you lose that attitude about women you might find you one. We can smell your type a mile away.
I don't build cabins, I don't need them. I'm severely disabled and often feel really, really ill and can hardly move my body - like I was doing now, feeling sick and dizzy and wasted. Then I listened to your speech and now I'm going to get my arse up, dress up and go for a walk. I owe it to you. Thank you.
Thank you for reminding everyone that in this country, you can do anything you want if you have the right attitude, focus , commitment and work hard! You sir, are truly an American hero. Blessings to you and your family! Your Grandpa would be so proud of the man you’ve become!
I love this! I've been in a wheelchair paralyzed since I was 4 years old (I'm 42 now) I tell people all the time: "Everything has a solution, no one said you had to like the solution or that it would be easy"
"........ But I have land" Great message - people over-complicate everything. It all depends on how badly you want something and how much sacrifice you're willing to make
Sometimes you don't even have to sacrifice!!! 30 years ago as a young kid in the workforce, a GOOD employer I had told me if you can't afford to have the amount of clamps you need or in my case it's definitely WANT, just buy ONE every paycheck, before you know it you've got LAND!!!!! HAHAHA!!!! I'm a woodworker and have a very bad clamp addiction, I love the things, but they are EXPENSIVE!!!! Not if you buy one, everyone can afford 10, 12, or even 50 bucks! If you want it bad enough, there are more ways than you know to have it, WHATEVER IT is!!! For crying out loud, there's even songs telling us this!! 🎶I got it one piece at a time, and it didn't cost me a dime! You'll know me when I come through your town!"🎵 The guy who works at a car factory and can't afford to buy one, take one home in your lunch box, one piece at a time, hilarious and true. A friend of mine even built his house the same way!! 3 houses actually..... Wah wah wah! I'm to poor, wah wah, I don't know how, wah!!! Just pathetic.....
I'm that mostly healthy guy whose first instinct is to say, "I can't do that." I'm 41 and just now learning to do hard things. I subscribed to your channel 2 videos ago, and I most certainly will not be unsubscribing. Because I need to hear exactly what you told me. I hope you read this to know that you're making a difference for good change.
Oh boy Ur 41 I'm telling U I'm 23 I was shock see a 70 plus years old men who still can play mountain bikes and climb hills I feel like if this 70 years old men can do something like this why can't I if others can do it get Ur ass up and think again what's stopping U this healthy men just like me
I'm 66 years old. Some people told me I was crazy but I'm going to build a cabin and live off grid. We bought 3.4 acres and I hope to encourage other retired people to pursue something that is a challenge . Thanks Dave. Great video!
I’m 61, my husband is 62, and we want to buy land and build cabins like this for our two adult kids. We want to build each cabin w the kid who will own it. These videos have convinced me we can do it! Thank you so so much for inspiring me even further.
Wow what a brilliant idea! I just told my daughter I want to do this for each daughter. I needed to hear this guy!!! I’m single and life has been hard but I think this is definitely something I could do!
You made my husband cry. He has been wanting to do some woodworking to sell chairs, etc. He's a maintenance manager (hands on) by trade, not a woodworker. Although he has done some remodeling. We set up a shop in the backyard. He's been putting off starting because he's so unsure of his skills. Your speech motivated him. He's in the back yard now with some 2x10's to make viking chairs. He's a recovered alcoholic (about 25 yrs now) and stopped going to AA because of the "cry babies" in the meetings all feeling sorry for themselves because they can't drink. He poured himself into his work instead of drinking. Now we're 66 and he's starting a new chapter in his life. Your stories gave him the kick in the pants he needed to start. Thank you. p.s. I was in the Bellevue, WA transit center one afternoon (at least 16 years ago) and saw a man on a skateboard. He had no body from the hips down. Only from the ribcage up. He "sat" on the skateboard and propelled himself with his hands. It took me a moment for my brain to register what I was seeing. Remarkable.
I've been around 30 years there. 10 sober. If I has any brains, I would have quit as a teen blacking out (huge red flag)..I didn't gain anything good drinking another 30 years. Jmo. Don't miss it at all. Doesn't hold me back from socializing and such... He should know the only ones whining are those who were sober 30 seconds, and it's to get expected at that point... The obligation is to help the new guy like there were people for us then. Not to take, but to give back.
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 Well said. Im considering AA meetings and reading her post about "cry babies" really put me off because its so judgmental.
@@MachinaGirlRobots How many of us ever recognized that God Himself is Judge of All. And therefore, that "Judgment is the friend of those who have right standing with God." With people, too. Intimate relationship with God Himself helps us to "not be offended by any thing". Blessings to you! I think you're on a Good Track!
I love working with my hands. One day I wanted to buy real lumber but just found scraps. I saved and just saved enough pennies. And then something happened, a big storm tore up a fence down the street and I asked the owner if I could have his old fence. I was in business creating wood strutures out of free wood from the storm. My point is --if you expect it to happen, it does and I didn't even have to buy the lumber. The Lord work in myterious ways, but you just have to ASK! Glad your husbands making it. jb
I thank you for sharing your experience with the disabled gentleman. I am also disabled (have my whole body but haven't walked in almost 20 years) and I can appreciate your encouragement. We want to buy a strip of land and put a tiny home on it. Your video has greatly encouraged me! Thank you for telling it like it is!!! I had the glamour corporate job in NYC and then became disabled. There is nothing like the simple life!!!! No amount of money is worth being stressed and a prideful attitude is at one or another has to bow down to humility. Expensive things are not always the answer. I love alternative means and alternative living. I'm so thankful for your testimony!
Wife and I have just left the consumer rat race,as much as we can for the time being. We'd both worked 40-50 hrs a week all of our lives, buying new cars, keeping credit cards and loans. I was already burned out when I lost my job during the pandemic. My company closed up shop and moved to Canada. They paid me half a years salary as severance and I was allowed to withdraw my 401k with no penalties or fees. We both started our own small businesses, her cleaning company and my lawncare. We used the rest of my payoff money to get out of debt. What a blessing it's been. We both only work about 20hrs a week and live off less than half of what we used too,and it's still a much better quality of life. We started raising chickens, meat rabbits, and quail. We switched to wood heat and raise a small garden. We do wanna buy more land and expand on what we're doin, and we will in time. For now we're enjoying being debt free and working for ourselves
My dad (50 years ago) had a slightly different one, but along the same lines: "You've got NO, you could get YES". In other words, always ask, even if your chances are down to zero.
I whole-heartedly agree ... My late grandmother used to say "Can't never could and never will" She was born in 1910 and raised her family through the Great Depression. She was 4' 10" and 95 lbs soaking wet. And she did whatever she needed to do . Once she had to change the tire on the family's 2.5 ton flat bed log truck ( logging without modern equipment except a tractor and old Willys jeep) and couldn't find the jack... She blocked up under that wheel and then dug a hole so she could both get off the flat and put on the new tire. IMO, greatest thing about YT should be that folks can see what is capable for them to accomplish not what they can't do. Greatest YT tubes have a common trait .. problem-solving, troubleshooting , and a CAN-DO attitude. Keep up the great content.
Sounds a lot like my grandmother. She could pick 100 lbs of cotton in a day. She also said, “can’t never could.” She also liked to say, “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.”
You are an inspiration for this old 71 year old tradesmen to buy a few acres & build myself a cabin away from the city & I love your, "Can do attitude!". Reminds me of my father's Montana rancher & US Marine attitude, "Can do!". Thanks, You got me motivated to do!
YOU just made me cry like a baby.....I been sitting here feeling so sorry for myself cause I can't walk without a Walker, Landlord has Cancer and I have to move soon....but that story you just told about the Man with no leg's.... is making me think maybe I could do this....just maybe I could.... Thank you ...
I really love the part where you went over the timeline that got you to the land you have now. Perfect example of how easy it is to see an “overnight success” when it was really decades of hard work, sacrifice, and patience. So awesome!
MY response to living in a small cabin is: have you tried it? My grandfather had a small one room cabin overlooking the river, not sure of the size but I would think 10'x12'. He added a screened in porch on the river side. His front door was an actual submarine door that he picked up from a Navy Surplus store. His outhouse was built onto the back of the cabin later on and had huge iron barrels that he'd dump lye into. We would walk down the steep embankment to fetch water, the stove was a kerosene stove that we used to cook on and heat the cabin. To bathe, we would go down to the river with our Ivory soap ( because it floats) we just had to make sure it didn't float down river. It was my favorite place and now memory. Don't knock it unless you try it.
Sounds rather great to me as well. The people who think it's crazy don't know how unbelievably amazing it feels to step back and look at something and say, I built that, experience those kinds of endorphins and seeing the look of envy and even sometimes jealousy on people's faces, and you'll do all you can, everywhere you can, just to feel it again and again!!! Pretty great to know that if the whole damn system falls apart, I can cut down some trees and build myself a VERY comfy space, I will NEVER be "homeless" cause I can build one!!! Can't imagine now, having taken any other path in life, I'm happy with my choices thus far which makes me happy with me. It's an easy way to avoid taking all the drugs that clog the airways of the idiot box. Some call em televisions I've been told......
We have to realize though, that some people are never going to be happy living this way. I've lived this way for 55 or so years and I love it. I have little 10x12 shed houses I made, each one has a different function....and these are my house. My bathroom for instance is a 8x8 timber frame structure with greenhouse material on it. Because I live in the desert, the sun is almost always out, and by 9am, its 80 in there. There is a camping propane shower in there, a stock tank sunk in the ground where the water goes and I pump it out to the peach tree outside the greenhouse. I have a compost toilet. I have no need, or desire, to live any other way. I built everything here on this property, and have lived here alone for 18 years, and before that in different wilderness areas, in an army navy surplus tent. Women can do this, they just have to adapt everything to their size, weight and strength levels.
@@Reidkelly I have been checking on land through Landwatch for property that will fit my budget and location. I want to make a cash purchase of the land and be able to complete front the cost of materials, equipment, tools… with the balance of funds. Proud Morley Stanwood Mohawk here. My mom told me from an early age that I could do anything I wanted as long as I set my mind to it, and I believed her. After I became a Christian I learned there was a Bible verse that told me basically the same thing. I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me. My kids dad and I believed that wholeheartedly for the almost 45 years we had together before his death. When people were surprised by the things we still did albeit a little slower when we became disabled I would tell them "We are disabled not dead!" Enjoy your channel immensely.
I have also never had a new car or care about expensive clothes but buying my first piece of land felt and still feels so special. To stand on it for the very first time was such an amazing moment.
"But I have land." Loved that statement so much. I've always advised my children to invest in land over other material things. It's always nice to know you've got some property that you own and can do whatever you want with it. And thanks for sharing that touching story of the bloke you encountered at the dump that day. It was very profound and inspiring. Continued blessings to you, Brooke, and the rest of your clan, mate.
"It's always nice to know you've got some property that you own and can do whatever you want with it. " Where does land like that exist in the US? I don't know of any states where you don't need permits and inspections for anything, where you can do whatever you want.
@@jimbob3030 There are no states where land is available.....Unless you get off your Rear End and Look For It. My husband is one of those "I can't do that" people. So......I had to learn to do everything from carpentry, plumbing, electrical to fixing the VW busses. Norm Abrams taught me carpentry, "The Idiot's Manual " taught me how to fix the busses. Thank goodness for UA-cam. It is now my go to place to figure out how to fix things and build things. Heck, your video taught me how to insulate a floor!
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Let me ask you this miss CAN DO, has your "husband" ever once felt like he was letting you down by not knowing how to help out with all the stuff that comes with LIVING????!? I've always felt there are some things that EVERYONE should be able to do, change a damn tire, hang window blinds, patch a hole in a wall, even as in depth as something like replacing a water heater or routine maintenance of the climate systems where you live. There is a crazy high number of people who can't change the filter in the furnace, some don't even know it needs to be done!!!!! I'm not sexist in any way at all, but lots of folks are, admit it or not, it made me laugh to look up after reading your comment and saw Karla instead of a guy's name, seems like your the man of the house here miss thang, that's frickin awesome!!! I say, throw it in his face any and every time you get the chance!!! Obviously I'm not trying to start a fight or anything, use it lightly and as a joke, but USE IT!!! One day he may want to man up and at least HELP you fix something!!!! Keep on being awesome sister!!!! Don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't do whatever the hell you want!!
A turning point in my life was watching a dryer repair man my girlfriend hired, spend about 45 seconds to change the belt and fix it without even using a single tool!!!! Two hands and a belt sold at walmart. He reached underneath, pulled out the broken one, put the new one under and jiggled around for a few seconds, not even being able to see what he was doing, it was so easy he could have been blind. From that point till now, I will try and fail TEN TIMES to do something before I call someone to do it for me. I don't understand why all of us don't do the same, with as many parts of daily life as possible, it can't be just pure laziness right?? Is it no self confidence?? I don't get it.
Dave, I observed closely and was impressed with your building skills in parts 1 and 2. However, only in Part 3 did i get to know the real Dave as a genuine person. Your description of the man at the dump site told me all I needed to know about you as a caring individual. I have never subscribed to anything until now and your comments in part 3 convinced me to do it to your channel. Dave you are my kind of guy and I will be looking at your videos from here on. Thank you.
I am heading over to work on my old home renovation project this morning. The project is a 100+ year old house on 5 acres in a rural part of Michigan. It has been dragging on, and has been easy to be distracted with other issues the last few years. I was dreading going to work on it this morning, but finished watching this part 3 video while having my coffee. You have put me back in touch with what the project means to my wife and me. Sometimes you just need a kick in the butt to get back on track. You are quite inspirational and I will be watching both of your channels. Thank you so much Dave.

We lost our home when hurricane Micheal came through. Our 12x20 Atlas Shed made it so we fixed it up and lived in it for 7 months, cooking on a BBQ, rented an outhouse and showered at my sons or late at night in the dark with a garden hose. I was 63, worked hard to recover and we are better people for the experience! We fed neighbors, helped whoever we could. I agree with you! We can do anything we put our minds to and we can do it with grace and joy! By the way, we here in Florida use tie downs to secure our buildings, giant screws that you put the the ground then strap it to the building. Saves a lot in a hard wind. Our shed survived 155 mph sustained wind for over 1 hour because of those tie downs. Anyway, I throughly enjoyed these videos and it made me want to go build something! By the way it was just myself and 24 year old daughter that did everything needed to recover. I’m like you, I can’t stand these whinny guys that are still living at home who complain about having to even get a job let alone really accomplish anything productive.
You brought me to tears telling us about that man. As a 36 year old dad with MS who has been losing his abilities over the years, you really made me appreciate what I can still do. I've always worked hard and I push myself to keep living the life I want. I want to thank you for reminding me that is always somebody worse off than you. I'd love to create a little getaway like this for me and my wife. These videos will be an excellent guide. Thanks for the great content.

I loved the talk about setting priorities. I live a frugal life too. I minimize waste of my money. I don't need a new car, lots of clothes and entertainment. I have land and investments and I am happy. Good health, good friends and family are all that matter.
Depends. I've lived this way, single woman farmer, for about 55 years....alone, except for the farm animals. I like it better being alone....I just adore Silence and the Peace it brings when you live in it. I like doing everything myself. I like people but I don't want them around all the time. The better way to be is that a help-mate should be like icing on the cake, not the cake itself. Mankind is perfectly able to do everything themselves if they need to.....most though are not Whole in nature and feel they need someone to fill up the holes in their own deficiencies. I couldn't watch this part as it isn't closed captioned, but I watched the other two.....and it looks like to me, both these people are Whole on their own and that is why it is such a special relationship. You don't see that too often.
Great video Dave. Good explanation. Love you guys! Say hi to Brook. Tip: I had a draw problem on my short stack fireplace chimney. Installed a whirlybird cap on top and this really improved the draw. I would never do this on a house but this was my shop. I’m happy! Mike B. MWW

Okay so my fiance and I watched your videos. Once we got to part 3 we loved your starter conversation. My fiance has one leg and he built everything on our property. We totally agree with your statement and applaud you for voicing it out. Thank you and I am now subscribed
I fully agree with your take on the "I can't" attitude - I get it from people also, but with smaller things. I've taught myself to crochet from UA-cam and also do many home maintenance projects from UA-cam also, as well as just trying things and "seeing what happens". I've been playing piano also since I was 6. And all I get from my family is "how are you so talented, I could never do that". My reply to them is that it's not that they can't, it's because they don't want to badly enough to even try. I'm convinced that so many things are more about effort than innate "talent". A person can teach themselves to do many things! But you never will if you try it once, fail at it, and then say "I can't" before you even get out of the gate.
Talent doesn't exist because that's only a judgment that only other people feel entitled to make about other people. It's not the same as Aptitude. But, everyone has desire, and you can't discover your aptitude until you have the desire. There is a trend to describe Western societies as fragile. These societies have achieved so much, and have so much that they have forgotten how to endure in the face of adversity. Look at the mess the global pandemic has wreaked because people have lost the ability to adapt to material difficulty. They have the knowledge available to cope but won't use it. They've lost the habit of resilience. Nobody wants to fail, so nobody tries anything new, and because that their emotional, psychological, mental, and physical development is stunted. This man I bet has failed many times, but he has learned from his failures and come out on the other side, stronger and more resilient. I hope people who come to this channel pick up the gauntlet this man threw down and do something different.
I'm ready to make a determination: this series is my favorite thing on UA-cam. When I feel down, I watch it and I am optimistic about the world again. Thank you. You've made a difference in the world.
I agree. I feel I can have a go at things like the cabin now. I love the series, please keep making things you are giving me so much inspiration to have a go ❤️
Thanks Dave & Brook. I couldn’t agree more. I’m a 54 year old woman with no qualifications in building yet I’m on my 2nd bathroom from scratch. I’m building a Japanese upright soaking tub with white concrete tops. Ive ripped out our old kitchen and rebuilt one 3 x times the size. Attitude is everything in life, belief in yourself is more important today than every before. Keep up the inspriration. I’m learning so many great tip and tricks from you both. 👍👍👍🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿🇳🇿
You've done exactly what I want to do...also in Michigan! I was back in Michigan for 9 years after being gone for 32 years...now back in NM😩 I only came back this way because of family but I was raised on a large farm in NW Michigan. I HAD 100 acres there but sold it almost a year ago because it was far too restrictive for a single old lady but I'm looking for a smaller tract again now! It's my dream...and I've literally built 4 new large homes in the past! I'm ready to downsize and have that setting that you've got! Funny part is, as soon as I started watching the first video I said, "OMG, that's gotta be Michigan!" I have goosebumps again because I'm so excited to do this...thanks!
I didn't know anything about you when I randomly found you on UA-cam. I was astonished by your skill building an amazing little home from 0. But then I reached this 3rd episode when I got even more astonished about your philosophy, willpower and the strength of your character and morality. The world needs many more people like you. Congratulations on being as you are. I hope that people can learn as much as possible from you.
AMEN!!! You said it all so well!!! What a privilege it is to even be alive and able to work at anything! ...to build, to learn, to make mistakes, to grow, to do stuff! I feel so blessed. That is a fantastic cabin and I hope you enjoy every moment of peace there!
Good for you to be able to have money and afford all this! Guess what your clothes are nicer than mine, and you have more cars than me that are all nicer than mine! Good for you that you can afford this, but why are you such a dick about it!
He ignores people who have healthy bodies but are mentally ill and treatment resistant. But I bet he'd accuse them of not trying hard enough. Some of us have been fighting thirty years. Then there's all the people who need to live close to a hospital for ongoing health problems. Personality, I have a blood pressure problem where if I get too hot my blood pressure would drop and I could pass out. So he can shove his sanctimonious "anyone can do anything" crap up his stovepipe.
I have raised my kids with this motto that I have lived by: CAN'T ISN'T A WORD, IT IS AN ATTITUDE. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU SET YOUR MIND TO, WITH A BIG HELPING OF PRAYER! I even put it on pens and pencils. I love your attitude!!!!
You story about the man with no leg resonates. Twenty-six years ago, I was recovering from being paralyzed. I started physical therapy at the local VA Hospital, and because there was no ward specific to my condition, I was placed in the Stroke and Amputee Ward. There was a guy there we called "Torso-Man" because like the gentleman you spoke about, this guy had no lower body at all. He had been run over by a train. Even with all that happened to him, he still had a good attitude and a desire to get back to as much normalcy as possible. He definitely motivated me.
I was in the lockdown in labor camp for four years after the VN war ended in 1975. Most of my family members did not survive. I never saw them again. I'm retired now with a financial freedom. I don't own any thing but I travel to see the world. In SE Asia, people still live with only a few bucks a day. Sharing is caring. Greeting from Minnesota!
My family is in the Philippines. People are family orientated there and know how to overcome and face challenges with courage and a positive attitude. I've been locked out of Philippines since I left there in September to return to the U.S. for some business. I shall return.
You have really inspired me to start building a small cabin on my property. Granted I only have 1/4 acre of land, I think I could swing something like that if I keep it under 200 sq ft. Ive even planned on having my kids help me build it to give them a little more confidence in making things like that. This and all of the videos that you have created are just awesome. Ive watched this particular one a few times just to get ideas on what I should be doing. Ive never done anything like this, but I am excited to start doing something. Hopefully I can save enough money to buy supplies for this, but I think it will be worth it. Already have a woodstove on standby in my basement :D
Really appreciate your candid answers to the 'questions' thrown at you. You've made sacrifices so that you could have the things that are important to you. Unfortunately that's an all-together foreign concept to a lot of people these days. Well done.
@@johnhickory9629 oh please, if you have a menards, the wood isn't that expensive, maybe try looking around your state for amish followers? they are big in nebraska, wyoming, most of central midwest. another close second to amish is Menonite, speak with them. get otu of your comfort bubbles and talk to people outside your beleifs. if i was him i would have kept the other 20 acres and rented it to a farmer, used the money to build the cabin. you can get 150-250 per acre rent depending where you live.
It's more like " I don't live in the state of California, therefore I have land " Jaw dropped when he said the price. Half a million here in SoCal doesn't get you much. He got multiple acres for less than 140k. With a house included. Gotta leave this state
In 2023 I rented my house out and moved into my 31 foot Shantyboat on the Ohio River. Back now after many adventures and misadventures. The most trying part of the transition is getting used to all the excesses of living in my house again. Mowing an acre each week is therapeutic as I am a concrete contractor with a small crew. But, aside from my garage, I long for another year on the Shantyboat. I love your wife's channel .I found yours through hers. I have never been disappointed. Thx
I got emotional with you Dave. Thanks for that reality check. I turned my old Chevy Blazer into a camper and I get into the back country with my dog every chance I get. I constantly have friends and coworkers tell me they could never be off grid for more than a day. I have chronic physical issues and am 60yrs old. Loved this build, video, and the amazing message. Thanks!
I always remember an old quote I heard back in the day: “whether you think you can do a thing, or you think you can’t do a thing, either way you are right”. It mostly means that a person’s attitude is more important than their actual abilities.
You heard that probably 200 years after the 1st one to say it!!!! That's cause it's the absolute and simple truth. I play dozens of instruments, I hear all the time, your so talented, I wish I could do that, I can't afford to buy em. Blah blah. I'm no more talented than the next person, I LIKE PLAYING MUSIC!!! So much so, that I put in lots of hours on each instrument, I tell those people, there's only 7 notes, you can count to ten right? All it takes is time and desire, period. Talent is optional. My personal favorite saying for life is....'anything worth doing, is worth doing RIGHT!!' Those are my words of wisdom to live by, wish more felt that way......
My friend, your lecture about people saying they "can't do that" is what got me to subscribe. I could not have said it better myself and as a Marine who served two tours in Afghanistan I sincerely appreciate that you said it. I look forward to checking out your other content and what you post in the future. Thank you for the great videos!
I started building when I was 8. We lived near the woods and I'd take any material I could find and go build. Treehouses, huts, shacks. I learned so much and had such a great time. It wasn't uncommon to see me walking down the road, coming from the lumber yard, with a board on my shoulder. The love of building carried me through many decades and I'm still building. I have owned so many properties over the years, re-hab'd them and sold them that if you do a google search for me it looks like I am a drifter with so many different address'. It served me well and kept me free to be me. The satisfaction of building something and enjoying it afterwards is the best 'high' you can have, in my book. Jesus was a builder, a carpenter and a savior. Sometimes we forget that.
Oh if hubby and I were younger and not disabled, we definitely would do this, we'd be so happy and away from the hassles dealing with others, love the scenery with trees, nature
I built fences with my dad in the 90s, always loved building things and then standing back and looking at it when you're done. Thanks for this particular series of videos.

God bless.

“But we have land.” I love it. You guys rock.
I’m really appreciating this man’s outlook on life and what I consider the right attitude. Thank you for sharing this project and sharing your insights with others.
My gosh I love the rant about people who say “I can’t do it “ and about making land the priority if you want it . So so true.
Your lengthy rant about people and the "I can't do it attitude" injected pure motivation into my soul.
I needed this thanks.

Amen to that. The youth and young adults dont know the meaning of necessity. Like the saying said, "Necessity is the mother of invention!"
Sounds a lot like my grandmother. She could pick 100 lbs of cotton in a day. She also said, “can’t never could.” She also liked to say, “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.”
I always say "I'm short but determined ". Sounds like your grandmother had the same attitude. She must have been a great inspiration.
Fear and doubt kills more dreams than trying ever will 🙏🇦🇺🇺🇸

Same here. This speech made me a subscriber. Well said sir. It’s always about choices in life.
Dave my friend, you are a breath of fresh air. Couldn't agree more with what you've said. Keep walking the narrow road.
"You have to make it a priority and then it's not an issue." Very wise words for a lot of things in life. 👍💪👏
BLR. Yes. Amen. Wow, such a great episode, on so many levels! :)
Everything we have because we made it a priority. And saved no frivolous spending.
Heck, I follow several people on youtube that live full time in a van, so anything is possible.
Love it, that's real living....life, made an adventure
My Great Grandparents mostly raised 10 kids in a one room cabin (with a loft) before they were able to build their big house. It can be done!
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can't; you're right.” -- Henry Ford

Proud Morley Stanwood Mohawk here. My mom told me from an early age that I could do anything I wanted as long as I set my mind to it, and I believed her. When people were surprised by the things we still did albeit a little slower when we became disabled I would tell them "We are disabled not dead!" Enjoy your channel immensely.

Good for y'all!!❤❤❤
I fully agree with your take on the "I can't" attitude - I get it from people also, but with smaller things.
"Whether you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right." It's all in the attitude and desire. (M.T.)
This guy has more common sense than most people, love to see it and great work!

You story about the man with no leg resonates. Twenty-six years ago, I was recovering from being paralyzed.
