What Is The THAAD Missile Weapon System?

  • Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), formerly Theater High Altitude Area Defense, is a United States Army anti-ballistic missile system which is designed to shoot down short, medium, and intermediate range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase using a hit-to-kill approach. THAAD was developed to counter Iraq's Scud missile attacks during the Gulf War in 1991. The missile carries no warhead, but relies on the kinetic energy of impact to destroy the incoming missile. A kinetic energy hit minimizes the risk of exploding conventional warhead ballistic missiles, and nuclear tipped ballistic missiles will not detonate upon a kinetic energy hit.
    Originally a US Army program, THAAD has come under the umbrella of the Missile Defense Agency. The Navy has a similar program, the sea-based Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System, which now has a land component as well ("Aegis ashore"). THAAD was originally scheduled for deployment in 2012, but initial deployment took place in May 2008. THAAD has been deployed in the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and South Korea.
    The THAAD system is being designed, built, and integrated by Lockheed Martin Space Systems acting as prime contractor. Key subcontractors include Raytheon, Boeing, Aerojet, Rocketdyne, Honeywell, BAE Systems, Oshkosh Defense, MiltonCAT and the Oliver Capital Consortium.

    I was "hand-picked" for Theater High Altitude Area Defense System in 1994. I was awarded an Army Achievement Medal for this selection. If I had not come down on orders to support Patriot Missiles in Saudi Arabia (another medal), and deployed in October 1995, I would have been sitting in the Kwajalein Atoll, with one sergeant, to be on the receiving end of missiles sent from Vandenburg AFB in Lompoc, CA. I watched a THAADS test, the second or third, at White Sands Missile Range. It missed, but they say it's like a needle trying to hit another needle. Cheers.

      That must have been an amazing experience Kelly. I thank you for your great service. 🫡 🇺🇸
      Question: My father (R.I.P.) was also hand picked back when the U.S. Army was amping up for their support in Europe for WWII. He was sent to Brownsville, TX for a specialized engineering training and returned back to his original Army base Ft Lewis, WA. It resulted in his Sgt 1/C AAA appointment. (Anti aircraft artillery) These big guns were primarily on battleships back then. Specifically “Guns in the Sun”. Generally speaking, would THAAD engineers be today’s version of early Army engineers working the primitive technology of AAA back in the early 1940’s?
      Thank you in advance! 🫡

    The reason China has a problem with THAADs in Korea is that it gives China a chance to drive a wedge between the US and ROK alliance. They have similarly been looking to break up close relations between the US and every other country in that region, from Japan to Australia, and have largely had some success in doing so.

    Correction: the spiral maneuver THAAD sometimes conducts is not to build up energy, but to get rid of excess energy, as a solid motor has no throttle; once it is lit, nothing can slow it down or stop it. Thus the missile turns in the air and burns propellant to remain in range safety constraints. You are correct to say that the the corkscrew is not for the missile to lock on, it is guided by a ground based radar for most of the way, with an IR seeker helping the missile with the minute adjustments needed to collide with its target.

    • @psyko2666
      @psyko2666 7 років тому +6

      Wynton Goulding not sure on the details, but that makes much more sense. The projectile velocity vs the incoming target already more than enough kinetic energy to destroy the target. Hitting it is much more important than how hard you hit it.

    • @wgoulding
      @wgoulding 7 років тому +7

      From what I know, it was only to make sure if the missile went "dumb", it would lack the energy to leave the missile test range. It may be used to engage slower and lower targets so that the missile isn't going too fast that it can't make corrections in time to hit, but I'm not 100% sure. You're definitely right, at the speeds that this thing is going, even a glancing hit will disintegrate a incoming warhead.

    • @MrLockCaps
      @MrLockCaps 7 років тому +5

      it's actually to burn off excess fuel so the missile hits the target in its terminal mode with no combustible materials on board. this is so it hits the enemy war head but not cause an explosion and release of chemical or nuclear materials.

    • @virtualinfinity6280
      @virtualinfinity6280 5 років тому +1

      Wynton Goulding: This is about as half-way correct, as the original assesment. The reason for the spiral maneuver is to maintain the kinetic energy but keep your approach as slow as possible. Following a spiral path to your targets makes the path to the target longer compared to the direct path, as much more distance is travelled. That way you gain time to aquire and track the target, while still being able to hit with the maximum kinetic energy.

    Hello all, Maximus, very good video about THAAD! But you have one thing wrong in your video. The reason for the corkscrew motion was because when we where testing the missile early on at White Sands missile range, the thing would come out of the tube so fast that we almost lost one off the range. The corkscrew was to slow it down just so we could track it and control it, i.e. keep it on the range lol. Keep in mind that the radar and subsystems where still in development at that time. I was actually on the THAAD project at Courtland AL during the R&D phase of the contract, and personally helped build the first THAADS. I've got a picture somewhere of all of us at the first THAAD missile role out that we built. If you find a pic of it somewhere on the net I'm the tall lanky goofy looking guy in glasses lol. It was an honor and I'm proud to have been a part of it.

  • @Hydrazine1000
    @Hydrazine1000 3 роки тому +3

    @9:40 "The rotating spiral is actually gaining a missile's kinetic energy." Close, but not cigar. Depending on where (both distance and height) a THAAD missile needs to intercept an incoming threat, it may need to *waste* some energy first, otherwise it will approach the target too fast.
    This corkscrew flight pattern is called an Energy-Management Steering Maneuver (EMSM) and it's definitly not for _gaining_ kinetic energy. It's intended to burn off an excess of solid rocket motor when making a closer or lower intercept. Otherwise it's coming in too hot.

      Everyone makes a big deal about everyone else having more and better missile defenses, and for very good reason. If one country has missile systems that can neutralize all enemy nuclear weapons, but the other countries don't, that well-defended country now has absolute nuclear dominance. Mutually assured destruction no longer applies, and they could use nukes on a whim without any fear of retaliation. The implications of good missile defenses are what scares people.
      That doesn't mean we shouldn't still try to make powerful missile defenses, but maybe we should keep the really good ones secret as long as possible.

    I know this might sound stupid, but honestly nuclear weapons have probably prevented more deaths than caused throughout their recent history and may very well continue to do so.
    Think about it. With conventional war, nations send millions of troops to kill each other over territory, but in the nuclear era, those nations are more likely to point their nukes at each other and play the waiting game. With such world-ending power at their disposal, and the ability to ensure mutually assured destruction, where any land, sea or air incursion could trigger a nuclear retaliation, countries are much more cautious about who they piss off. Obviously a nuclear war would be absolute devastation for both sides, but a conventional war is often absolute devastation for one side, and if the threat of nuclear war keeps everyone locked down in a defensive state, many fewer people will die in conventional fighting.
    I'm not advocating nuclear weapons programs as anything other than a way to deter other nuclear-capable countries, but it really makes you think.

And they kinda support North Korea in a few ways too, so there's that.

      The thing is, THAAD, Patriot, and AEGIS (and many similar systems) are primarily designed for taking out a IC/RBM in the 'boost phase'. Basically the immediate launch of an ICBM/IRBM is where their success rate is the highest. This has severe limitations in the range and tracking department.
      Basically NK is going to become part of the ICBM club and will have effective firepower to take out multiple keystones of the world economy at once. They might be glassed in nuclear fire, but we'll be left with an economic depression to make even the GREAT DEPRESSION seem like everything is hunky dory.

    What I don’t understand about the THAAD is why it doesn’t use a blast fragmentation proximity fuse to knock out MRBMs, etc. margin for error is zero with no warhead and a kinetic impact setting. That makes me a little nervous about its reliability. I mean, in the cgi footage of the THAAD ER in this video it’s showing the BMs being taken out with a massive impact explosion, but in reality wouldn’t it be more of a cathud?

      You are right in everything you said. I have been watching military contractors since the Vietnam war. Only 1 in 11 of our missiles hit. These contractors bullshitted the Navy and Air Force so much, that they decided not to put the usual Guns on the F 4 Phantom, which cost us dearly. I say lets launch a dummy ICBM from Guam to the THAAD plant in the USA and put THAAD up against it. I am sure you would here some bumbling chatter. BUT here is my major evidence,,, most all government contract systems fail badly when first put into service like the Apache Helicopter, when it came out it was near useless, but pilots had to fly them and give feedback. Over time the contractors had to fix it. But no one flies missiles to see if they function, missiles are only used when needed in war,,,,what then now if they dont function? The truth is we dont know if THAAD is effective, but history proves these systems do not.

    One other point of note is that you don't need a warhead to do a significant amount of damage to a target because a MIRV is travelling at something like Mach 25 on re-entry, the Kinetic Energy is enormous. This option has been seriously considered in the past by most of the countries that have Ballistic Missiles, but, these devices are indistinguishable from their nuclear brothers and hence lead to a Nuclear exchange!! MIRVS tend to fall into two general catagories:-
    1) The first of these is the old fashioned blast version, where the warhead explodes over the target, which does a lot of damage to surface objects etc similar to the Fatman and Littleboy bombs used on Japan. I suspect that it's this type of warhead that North Korea is trying to construct.
    2) The second type is the more difficult to construct because it uses a combination of Fuzing and the stored Kinetic Energy to breach hardened targets etc!
    Ballistic Missiles usually carry a number of decoys in addition to the real MIRV payload and these are designed to behave in an identical manner to a MIRV!! Also, the closing velocities between an ABM system and its target(s) can be something like Mach 50, So, it's unlikely that any ABM system will have a 100% success rate!
    From what I remember the North Korean Government has exported several Missile types/designs to client states around the globe. if they were to follow this model by increasing the poliforation of MIRV systems to unsuitable clients that could pass these devices on to terrorists etc.

    THAAD was designed to stop Ballistic Intercontinental Missiles on their Reentry into Athmosphere. So it would help against only the old Systems like SS22 Sickle. Against hypersonic Missiles, that can even change their trajectory, it is as useless as Patriot. Those Missiles have to hit the Threat kinetically like Pac3 patriot and it needs very precise data of the threat trajectory very early. As soon as the threat warhead uses boosters to change the trajectory for about 1 or 2 feet the Thaad interceptor will miss. And not only this one but all of them. It is like a archer aiming on a incoming horse rider that ducks under the Arrow before it hits him.

    • @0MoTheG
      @0MoTheG 4 роки тому

      It was NOT designed for ICBMs! It has a defensive "range" of about 200 to 5000 km.

    • @WanderfalkeAT
      @WanderfalkeAT 4 роки тому

      Are you completely UNINFORMED? THAAD Therminal High Altitude Area Defense - Was specifically designed to do JUST THAT! And the Defensive "Range" is very limited because it is to stop incoming Nukes from Space on Reentry - It needs Altitude not Range! Modern RADAR's have a Detection Range of about 3000-5000 KM with Over the Horizon Systems. Detection but not Defense! It may be able to shoot high into Space but is very limited in the Athmosphere because it has not the Fuel to fly so far in the Athmosphere. This means it can be fired at a strict interception Point. But when that Point MOVES because of defensive Maneuvering of the Warheads it cannot Change to intercept again. It is like a Rocket Bullet fired and guided in the Athmosphere by the THAAD Computer and then flying a earlyer predicted Course to the Threat. If timed right and the Object does not Change ist trajectory there is a great Chance of the THAAD hitting the Threat, because normally ICBM's are just falling to Earth with no changes of the Trajectory by Boosters. So to the new Russian ICBM's or Hypersonic Missiles the THAAD is completely useless! If you don'tget this, it is because you have no Grasp what THAAD is!

    Given that THAAD has 6x kill vehicles per launcher and a SSBN has 24 missiles with 6+ Multiple Independantly targetable Re-entry Vehicles (MIRV) warheads per missile there is very little likelyhood that the THAAD offers nothing other than give a pshychological boost to the region that thinks it is defended. I personally look forward to orbital defense sytems that kan kill the missile in it's boost phase well before MIRV separation.

    Matsimus, you mentioned at around (1:30 of the video) that you are "more concerned with countries such as Iran?" Why do think they should be considered more of a threat than the governments of other countries, especially considering the fact that they have no nuclear armed ballistic missiles in their possession. In your opinion what makes Iran so significant when compared to countries like the US, Russia, Pakistan, India, Israel, all of whom have significant amounts of nuclear armed and capable missiles, and have shown propensity to swiftly and frequently engage in military actions, with the US and Israel being significant outliers regarding what is known as "military aggression".

Ok,,, The leadership in Iran is what we fear in the USA, I have seen the leadership say death to Israel, death to the USA and an extreme amount of hate for the USA. People here take words very seriously and combind with a history of seeing extremist terrorism to include old 911 makes for a defensive position here. Look how Trump reacted to North Korea, ya. Combine that with a predominate Christian population that sees Islam as a Hell bound religion that cannot be true because Jesus is the only way,,,,well you get the picture. So I could go on for another ten thousand words but what I have said may make you see why he said that....

    The turn maneuver is neither for finding target, nor for gaining kinetic energy. Rather, it is for *losing* kinetic energy. After all, not all targets will be at the same range and we don’t want to fly right past it. The maneuver would not be used if the target were at the extent of THAAD’s range.

  • @stupidburp
    @stupidburp 7 років тому

    THAAD and THAAD-ER are high capability defense systems with huge range and altitude limits but are too expensive to deploy in large numbers.
    MEADS and David's Sling are good medium range defensive systems that have excellent potential range with certain missiles and can be cost effective. Baseline MEADS use the PAC-3MSE interceptors which are expensive and have relatively limited range.
    Combining MEADS with Stunner or Aster missiles would greatly expand the range and greatly improve the cost effectiveness for area covered. Such a system would cover many times more volume and come close to baseline THAAD range.
    Patriot PAC-2 and PAC-3 systems are okay short range defensive systems and can extend out to medium range with some missiles such as PAC-3MSE but are relatively high cost, especially for the volume of air space covered and have less capable sensors than MEADS which limits further growth.
    NATO countries including the US should upgrade to MEADS or similar systems and integrate medium range cost effective interceptors such as Stunner or Aster. THAAD-ER for extreme long range high threat missiles such as those that may have nuclear warheads, MEADS with Stunner for the short to medium range layer, and various CIWS for the close range and point defense layer.

    So THAAD ER is competing with AEGIS Ashore as both cover similar areas. This is one way the US could save money, develop one system for both land and marine use as China and Russia does. When systems cost billions in development to do the same task, that is a big saving. The same with laser systems, each of the services has their pet project soaking up resources and will no doubt deploy similar but non compatible systems to do the same task.

    Most important thing for THAAD or other antilballistic missile system networks is the ability to win at the warhead shell game Russia will not doubt be employing. The US knows this and have spent far more money on advanced sensors networks and target interpretation technology then they have spend on a missile system so they can pick out the few real warheads from the hundreds of decoy warheads each missile deploys. This was well documented issue back when Strategic Defense Initiative was being researched.

  • @Dragunov38
    @Dragunov38 7 років тому

    The high risk of a THAAD being in close proximity to Chinese and Russian borders is that in previous instances both nations have express concerns because they claim that a defensive systems has also the capabilities to be used as an offensive system. In a sense they are correct in the fact that even ICBMs armed with MIRVs are most vulnerable before entering post boost phase. This gives them context in their assessment for an strategic disadvantage in First strike capabilities for their own nuclear forces. Something no nation with ICBMs wants to give up. If push came to shove this could give the Chinese or Russians grounds to enter the conflict by a proxy war factor. The result would be catastrophic not just for the Asian pacific region but for the entire world... As advance as THAAD is, it would fail to shield the continental US and Europe from ICBMs armed with MIRV mods in all out scenario.

    • @imjashingyou3461
      @imjashingyou3461 2 роки тому

      I disagree completely with this assessment. THAAD poses no threat to missiles in the boost or post boost phase and China and Russia know this. It does not have nearly the Mach 30+ speed to perform a pre midcourse phase interception of a ICBM. Russia and China are making waves for the same reason they always have. 1. Propaganda- the average person has no real knowledge to know they are lying. 2. Drive a wedge between the US and its Allies, by providing a boogeyman that Allies may not want to stand up to Russia over and throw diplomatic and military processes into chaos.

    Ive been doing a lot of research on THAAD for my debate topic and its a wildcard. issue it shows is it has only been tested in ideal conditions. The issue here is it hasnt been tested against SEAD, Cyber attacks, or weather conditions that could leave it open to missing its target. I personally want to see it tested under stress conditions before the Military goes out and says its the best thing sense sliced bread because when you are dealing with nukes you cant make a single mistake.

      Put what about AEGIS and the Patriot system? The AEGIS is pretty effective under fire (USS Madison in Yemen) and the Patriot failed miserably in desert storm. Looking at those odds is a 50/50

    • @zipz8423
      @zipz8423 7 років тому

      AEGIS is a mature system and its very adept at what it does, in Yemen it has not been disclosed what splashed the inbounds, ECM / ESSM or SM2 or malfunction. Patriot in GWI was never designed to engage fast moving SRBMs like Scud I would have been shocked if it did.
      I have to say , again, all weapons system tests are held under non combat ideal conditions, especially if they are contractor controlled tests!
