Blimey, what an adventure that was!!! I was in that platelayers hut about 18 months ago it's definitely more overgrown now. The station for John O'Gaunt village is just the other side of the viaduct, but it is now part of a farm, so inaccessible unless you're going out with the Farmer's daughter!!! When I was up there the viaduct was blocked off with heavy duty fencing, they obviously don't want you on the structure itself. Well done guys, a cracking effort.
Thank you Seamus. Yes there is still heavy duty fencing up there. I love plate layers huts, to be honest, I love those more than viaducts lol...and I ain't joking, I love coming across them.
Delighted to see that the viaduct is still in existence! I thought it would likely have been demolished by now. Is anything left of John o'Gaunt Station? As far as I know it was the only station named after a fox covert. In the middle of nowhere it never had many passengers. At one time there was a dairy nearby but little else. It always fascinated me when we travelled to Skegness or Mablethorpe for a day out on an excursion train. Other stations at Ingarsby, and Lowesby were also built to serve very small villages and the line never really carried any really large amounts of traffic. We lived near Humberstone Station when I was young and there were few trains either passenger or goods in the 1950's and 60's on the GN section.
Brilliant video Steve. Well done. If you go through Marefield and take the next left to Burrough on the hill just up that lane on the left by WhiteHouse farm is a footpath which takes you towards the viaduct and goes through the remains of the deserted village site of North Marefield, which was more populated than the very small hamlet of today.
Thank you Chris. I can't believe we recorded this video I'm the summer of 2021! Also, expect a video about abandoned villages in Leicestershire this year mate. Thanks for watching.
@@LeiceExplore It certainly does! I'm sure there's plenty more fun and noseying to be had when you get the call to! I'm nearing the beginning of your channel with only a few more 'shows' :) to enjoy now!
Once again a brilliant video from one of my teenage stomping grounds. If you google Marefield junction there are some old images from the lines working days.
I have been to harringworth and made a vid there buddy...but I'm going to be remaking that vid as it's poor, and I know a lot more about that area now after looking at the old maps...thanks for watching

Great video. Would love to have a close look at the viaduct , which I see in the distance on the way to Borough Hill 😀
Thank you! There is a footpath that goes beneath it
I hope you wandered up the road to see its bigger brother at Harringworth, and the lost lines around there

Another triumph.
Thank you Bugster!
Isnt it called the john o gaunt viaduct?
Some call it that, others say marefield
I lived at Lowesby as a kid, the locals pronounce it as Marfield not as the female horse.
Lol
