great review, just got one from my family for my big five 0, boss won`t let me have until the big day but Ben, you`ve got me gagging for October 9th to come along, it looks amazing I`m sooooo stoked on this, thank god I never chose a Tisso or Tag, thought I`d get bang up to date in my old age, thanks for taking the time to review. BTW, for anyone considering this, the strap Ben is wearing comes included as an extra (I chose a leather strap) with tools for a quick change. just thought I`d mention it!
My watch experience is similar to yours. I've had a Suunto Core Glacier Gray for about four months, and it has performed well in various conditions: a cold weather hike at Frontenac State Park by Red Wing Minesota in March, some running & hiking in local woodlands, and a two day overnight hike/camp on the SHT near Silver Bay, Minnesota. I like the comfort of the band, the clarity and simplicity of the display, easy user interface, and overall appearance. It's a solid ABC watch. But i wanted something with more ckmprehensive navigation capabilities and more features, so a couple days ago I bought a Fēnix 3. Bouth watches were purchased off of Craigslist (the Core for $95, the Fēnix 3 for $385 - both GREAT DEALS!), where folks are always unloading expensive gadgets they've seldom used. So far, the Fēnix 3 has a few outstanding advantages over the Core: more adjustable band with smaller & closer-spaced holes to give a much better fit on the wrist; far more customizable watch face with superb visibility in DIRECT SUNLIGHT, and a compass function that is much easier to use and doesn't require the watch to be held steady in a flat horizontal position to get an accurate reading. Both watches have these things, but the Fēnix 3 is just plain better. Then there are the extras that the Fēnix 3 has that make it special: email/missed call/text message (AND Facebook messenger!) notifications that vibrate and show on the display WITHOUT HAVING TO NAVIGATE TO A SPECIAL SCREEN! They show up, you read them, then you discard them. Like dude says, you can't reply - but so what? It's very handy to see notifications without having to pull out your phone, which ALSO means you can completely mute your phone's notifications (great in quiet environments like movie theater, church, meeting, etc.) Multiple GPS functions, including a very cool sync with the Garmin Connect mobile application that tracks lots of stats like speed, distance and even a visual route on a map of where you went. So many ways to utilize the GPS...too many to list here. A rechargeable battery. Capability to download routes (which, in fairness, I haven't done yet because I it requires a computer and I use a tablet & cellphone almost exclusively for Internet). The Core has a bearing function that points ⬅ or ➡ to get you back on the right heading and ⬆ once you're on the right track, but it's not a visual track - it's like finding a hidden treasure as a kid and someone saying "you're getting warmer" or "you're getting colder"... Granted, I've only had the Fēnix 3 for a couple days, but already I can tell it's going to be my everyday watch.
Great review Ben, I know this is a few years old now but have just bought an as new Fenix 3 Sapphire on a local auction site, saved a few $$$ on the new v5 or v6 etc, and your review helped me identify the features that actually matter to me and not the bells and whistles, cant wait for it to arrive now. Cheers.
Excellent review, and am really impressed by the clarity and brightness of the display. Having had many Garmin GPS units I'm really interested in this watch.
Great review! Helped me finally decide as your thoughts on the functions are inline for mine for a GPS watch e.g. you don't want all the internet and social media features of an Apple phone. I must also say that I have watched (no pun intended!!) quite a few UA-cams on GPS watches and running stuff and some people just don't have the voice or character for interesting UA-cams. But you have it right. Nice job :-)
That's a pretty trick watch. Yes a bit expensive. I prefer GPS on my iPhone and can track the route as well. I did get a Sunto Core mainly because I got a killer deal; used but literally looked brand new $100. It even does more than I will ever use but I like how light it is. Wish is was a little easier to real in some lighting conditions. I just think too many of these gadgets do way too much. As I get older simple is good. Nice review as always.
+Ralph Magnus i agree that's why an apple watch wouldn't be for me since if i want to do more advanced stuff I'll get out my phone. That being said being able to track your hikes and bikes etc without a phone is nice.
That's a pretty nice watch Ben. It looks like Garmin took the best features from my Pebble Time and ramped them up. I was fairly happy with the 4-5 days of battery I get from the Pebble. 2-3 weeks is outstanding! Way too expensive for me though. I'm going to stick with my Pebble.
Never realized you were in Michigan...I used to race horses there at hazel Park, Sports Creek (Swartz Creek ) and Northville Downs way back in the day..not sure if those tracks even exist anymore.....anyway good video..pricey watch but Garmin puts out great products..
Nice watch! Just looked it up on Amazon, wow $699!!!?!!! I already own the Garmin 64st, which can do everything that watch can and more for $299. Just need to figure how do strap it to my wrist.
Impressive, but it should be for a $500 price tag. I would also tend to worry about it in an EMP situation. I'm going to automatic (self-winding) watches for survival situations.
I see you have this video and then a comparison video with the Suunto traverse. I keep going back and forth and can't seem to decide which one to get. Suunto is coming out with the new Suunto Spartan but I do not see anything about any of the hiking features for that model. I am liking the Suunto for its outdoor capabilities but the Fenix has such a nice color screen. Which one are you liking better between the two.
Tanks a lot for your review.... One of The best! Just a question but not for The watch: witch camera arte you using ti record The video? It's so stady!!!
You mentioned a version with a map? What was that one? I like my sunnto for the sun up and sunset. Also the storm warning. Does the Fenix have these functions? Looks like a cool watch can't wait to hear more about it. I am seriously considering one. Thank you for this.
+CovertOutdoors yes it has the storm alert and sunrise/sunset and you can actually have it alert you a user set minutes before rise or set. the version with the map is the Epix.
You got a Fenix 3 for $200? I think we are all talking about different watches, haha. I got a Fenix 3 for $350 on Ebay. I got my Core for $180 a couple years ago on a sale.
Hello, I bought Fenix 3 HR to minimize my day and all the sport that I practice, but I can not find an application for when I go to the gym to do bodybuilding and group classes, for example crossfit. You can help choose one or more applications. Greetings.
Hey, man! Great video! I also have the Suunto Core all black as my main watch and I'd also like to upgrade to the Tactix Bravo which has the same diameter as the Fenix 3 that you're wearing. However, I have smaller wrists than you do and I'm kind of already borderline size with the Suunto core. Would you be able to show me some closer comparison between the Core and the Fenix 3? Thanks man, I'appreciate it!
Seriously? a $600 GPS watch? Looks great... but $599 on both Garmin & Amazon. Yes, I'm sure it can be had for less... but WOW. That's way out of my price range.. Great review though. Makes me wish I had it for my Philmont trek next year w/ my son and his Troop mates.
Great review, thanks for taking the time. I've been researching for a good abc watch to replace my PAW-1300 Pathfinder. Small question, while the Fenix 3 is water proof to 300ft- is it okay to operate the buttons while submerged underwater or in heavy rain? Many watches while waterproof were not designed to be operated while submerged, thus why I switch to G-Shock which can.
with any watch (except a dive watch) I would try not to use the buttons when submerged. I have used in the pool many times though and it works just fine.
Thank you, I plan to use it for light swimming. But 98% of my activities with the watch will be outdoors activities like camping, hiking, mountain biking etc. Occasionally I camp in downpours and wanted to make sure it was okay to operate under heavy rain. Just ordered the watch actually.
@livingsurvival This might be obvious, but do you have to have the phone with you when receiving notifications (text and etc)? Can I leave it in the car or at home? Can you connect somehow to your mobile carrier in order to utilize those features remotely?
Looking at a replacement/upgrade for my TomTom sport watch. Is there any problem with hitting the control buttons inadvertently when in use. Could it pause your run by accident?
I don't understand how can this watch have a battery that lasts 2 weeks and the new Samsung Gear S3, which in functionality to me looks the same (time, gps, variety of sensors, hearthrate and notifications), and also size wise is very similar, only lasts 2-3 days... Sure the screen is more vibrant but is that the reason for the reduced battery life?
Is it an sapphire edition or not? I've just bught sapphire, but there in no notice about this on back cover. I seen on youtube unboxing of sapphire edition that there is an 'sapphire' stated on the back. Wondering is mine a fake?
the watch is coming with a wrist heart rate monitor or you can a chest strap heart rate monitor - the build in wrist monitor is pretty ok for most activities but the chest heart rate monitor is a little more accurate - both will be used to calculate you calories burned
So I'm getting one tomorrow but I'm having a hard time picking from Fenix 3 hr vs Fenix 3 sapphire. Someone had experienced their metal clasp on the sapphire metal wristband shoot off. What's your opinion on which one I should get? Thanks Living Survival
Curious about buying from Gearbest. Their BBB rating is an F. I can't find anyone stating anything positive about them on any forums, website, etc. their Whois registration looks extremely sketchy. Are they just another case of "if it's too good to be true..."?
I think I'll pay less for an Apple Watch. It'll do everything this one does and more. And all of those features that may be annoying, I'll just turn off. There is that option. And there's something about the option of all of your devices (laptop, tablet, phone, and now watch) communicating and working together in a seemless manner. At least that been my experience. YMMV.
Curious how it worked out for you. How long did it take to get? Is it legit? Unopened? Still have manufacturers warranty? I've done some research on Gearbest, and none of it is good.
Thank you for the awesome review. Very helpful! I'm still having hard time to decide between fenix 3 hr and the fenix 3 Sapphire. How in accurate is the optical sensor in the hr version? Can you count on it for running? Also i understand you can get text notification but can you recieve whatsapp notifications as well? Thank you!
i don't have the hr version but i can tell you the sapphire is as clear and scratch free as when it came out of the box. i usually scratch watches right up and this one is rock solid.
Ben, is that gearbest site legit???? I just ordered the watch off there and it took quite some time for the payment to go through and I just hope the site it legit. I guess we'll see! Thanks.
Yes it is for sure. Many order from there from my light videos and forums i am on including candlepowerforums and budgetlightforums. I order lots myself too. It takes 4-6 weeks with the free shipping option unless you opt for expedited shipping.
Thanks helped me with my decision...
Will not get a Apple Watch it will be the GARMIN FENIX 3 Saphire HR!!!
Great video...
nice.
Harold William Knox seeing the Harmon also changed my mind a few weeks ago
Oh man, I found it really cheap here:

BTW, for anyone considering this, the strap Ben is wearing comes included as an extra (I chose a leather strap) with tools for a quick change. just thought I`d mention it!
yeah a leather strap would be great. ill probably get that if this one wears out. so far so good.
Granted, I've only had the Fēnix 3 for a couple days, but already I can tell it's going to be my everyday watch.
Is it the price difference better than the core though?
The Fenix 3 is a few hundred dollars MORE than the Core Glacier Gray...but they are vastly different pieces of wearable tech.
Hello! I was wondering if it's still worth it buying this watch in 2018 and do you still use this watch on a daily basis?
Great review Ben, I know this is a few years old now but have just bought an as new Fenix 3 Sapphire on a local auction site, saved a few $$$ on the new v5 or v6 etc, and your review helped me identify the features that actually matter to me and not the bells and whistles, cant wait for it to arrive now. My screen still doesn’t have a scratch to this day.
I love the Fenix 3. Thanks for the review. Another feature that beats the Apple Watch is that its waterproof to 1000 meters so you can dive with it.
+DogWalksMe yep. 100 meters not 1000 lol.
Excellent video! This watch is next on my list. Thanks from across the pond!
thanks, great watch.
I ordered mine this past weekend. Can't wait to get it!
did you get your watch from gearbest?
No, I got it from Amazon.
Cool watch! Love your apartment prepping series btw.
+Dying2selfDaily thanks.
Excellent review, and am really impressed by the clarity and brightness of the display. Having had many Garmin GPS units I'm really interested in this watch.
+MrWinger1951 Garmin does navigation right. I am learning more by the day.
Awesome product...but definitely much more than I'm willing to pay for it. Nice video Ben.
Best review on the watch I've seen :)
Congrats on 75,000 subs
+Elias Torres thank you.
Excellent video! About to buy one and will definitely now. Great job, very informative and professional. Happy New Year!!
mine still doesn't have a scratch and wear it daily
I also had the Core before getting the fenix 3. Awesome stuff.
Have this watch and love it!
I like it .
Compact and always on your wrist.
+PREPFORIT agreed.
I currently have a Suunto Core and I’m looking to upgrade to this Garmin Fenix 3

FINALLY I've been waiting on this review!
+Mitchel Rothrock :)
That's a pretty trick watch. Yes a bit expensive. I prefer GPS on my iPhone and can track the route as well. +Guy Mooglie Yep pretty close to me.
You can get a 550 paracord band if you want. I bought one for my Tactix. Survival Straps.
nice.
Great watch awesome video
+Roland Silva thanks my friend.
Nice review. Another app to consider for viewing Garmin data is ConnectStats.
+beckerm13 i'll check it out.
Just bought one. Thanks for this review.
nice, enjoy.
Looks like a great gps smart watch. Kind of pricey but I'm guessing it's worth it for all of the features.
+11696Ron thanks for checking it out.
Thank you 🙏🏻
I also got this same watch. Love it!!
Good review man. Stay strong and keep healthy!
Nice watch! Just looked it up on Amazon, wow $699!!!?!!! I already own the Garmin 64st, which can do everything that watch can and more for $299. Just need to figure how do strap it to my wrist.
+Rich Ellis nice.
Great Review! I just ordered one of this. Thank you.
WOW! Awesome intro Bro!
Thanks for the review, nice vid!
+Kik Stark thanks.
Very Cool but pricy watch! I guess you get what you pay. Nice review Ben...It has very nice features..I still love my suunto core all black though 😜
+always prepared love my core too!
I've always hated watches, but I could make an acceptation for this
+Tactical Patriot thanks for checking it out.
Great video :-) I'm going to replace my 225 with a Fenix 3 HR Sapphire
I am unclear about the various combos of options. I want the HR and the Sapphire...Is it available as such?
Yes

Really good review, thanks :)
thank you.
Impressive, but it should be for a $500 price tag. I would also tend to worry about it in an EMP situation. I'm going to automatic (self-winding) watches for survival situations.
+Michael Hooley (MinuteMan1776) good point. thanks.
Nice watch Ben and a great review as always :-)
+Russ B thanks Russ.
Cool shades
Where can I buy some
great review as always, love the watch but man that price is a little much. but that is the watch I have been looking for.
I'm not a watch guy but I would wear this one.
thanks for checking it out.
I was ready to get this watch until I heard the price lol. Great watch though. Gonna start saving up my lunch money.
+Mlizar lol, yeah price should come down. can't beat that gearbest price though if you don't mind waiting to get it.
I see you have this video and then a comparison video with the Suunto traverse. I keep going back and forth and can't seem to decide which one to get. Suunto is coming out with the new Suunto Spartan but I do not see anything about any of the hiking features for that model. hard for me to decide too.
Well, I get my Fenix 3 tomorrow. Can't wait to use it. Thanks for the great review. It helped me decide.
Great review just needed to know does it show heart rate zones on watch whilst exercising ?
Very helpful, Thanks!
Good Video Thanks Ben.
Tanks a lot for your review.... One of The best! Just a question but not for The watch: witch camera arte you using ti record The video? It's so stady!!!
very good review. THANK YOU
thanks.
Cool watch, you want one arm or two for it?
great review. thanks. Will the GPS and ABC features work without cellular signal or a phone?
You mentioned a version with a map? What was that one? I like my sunnto for the sun up and sunset. Also the storm warning. Does the Fenix have these functions? Looks like a cool watch can't wait to hear more about it. I am seriously considering one. Thank you for this.
+CovertOutdoors yes it has the storm alert and sunrise/sunset and you can actually have it alert you a user set minutes before rise or set. the version with the map is the Epix.
I have the Core also but the price on this one little much. But it will come down after a year or so
+jim McMillen yeah I think I paid $300 for my core and they are $250 now.
I was talking about the Garmin price. I hope it come down.. But I see it does a lot more then the core
+jim McMillen I just bought one on eBay for $350.
I got a nice one for 200.00 off ebay
You got a Fenix 3 for $200? I think we are all talking about different watches, haha. I got a Fenix 3 for $350 on Ebay. I got my Core for $180 a couple years ago on a sale.
excellent review.
the watch is awesome. wish list for sure.
it is pricey though. but it looks bad ass
+JD thanks for watching.
Hello,
I bought Fenix 3 HR to minimize my day and all the sport that I practice, but I can not find an application for when I go to the gym to do bodybuilding and group classes, for example crossfit. You can help choose one or more applications.
Greetings.
Nice review but dang that price. All the things I would use on it, I already have on my phone which would be with me anyway.
+Dwane Thomas right on.
Great Chanel!
+Eduardo thank you.
living survival are you going to do a review of the Garmin Fenix 5X?
if someone buys it for me, lol. probably not. not that much of a difference from what I saw at shot.
great job
hahaa, leet time at exactly 13:37 of the vid. ;)
oxdudepoege and?
I'm sold!
Did you consider the Suunto Traverse? I'm truly torn between that and the fenix 3
+James Flowers hopefully I have one on the way and can compare them.
+Living Survival Awesome! I'm right on the edge between them. Your discount does put it down to about a 100$ difference.
best watch ever
Mate, are you using the default digital watchface? How did you change the color of seconds?
it is an option to change the color.
Seriously? a $600 GPS watch? Looks great... but $599 on both Garmin & Amazon. Yes, I'm sure it can be had for less... but WOW. That's way out of my price range.. Great review though. Makes me wish I had it for my Philmont trek next year w/ my son and his Troop mates.
+SoCalDaveL thanks for watching and the comment.
Just picked up the regular version (not sapphire) for $350 on eBay. Just search for deals.
Great review, thanks for taking the time. I've been researching for a good abc watch to replace my PAW-1300 Pathfinder.
Small question, while the Fenix 3 is water proof to 300ft- is it okay to operate the buttons while submerged underwater or in heavy rain? Many watches while waterproof were not designed to be operated while submerged, thus why I switch to G-Shock which can.

which watch face you using ?
Does this have a vibrating alarm?
Yep
Your at 75k you can do the give away and good job
@livingsurvival This might be obvious, but do you have to have the phone with you when receiving notifications (text and etc)? Can I leave it in the car or at home? Can you connect somehow to your mobile carrier in order to utilize those features remotely?
Looking at a replacement/upgrade for my TomTom sport watch. Is there any problem with hitting the control buttons inadvertently when in use. Could it pause your run by accident?
I use this watch for the little while. No chance to hit any button. Still you can lock the screen during activity.
great review
Have you actually done any testing for GPS accuracy. I am reading a number of reviews stating that the GPS is not accurate.
+kourgath007 just as accurate as my regular garmin gps it seems.
Does this watch feature MGRS or is that only on the Tactix Bravo?
I don't understand how can this watch have a battery that lasts 2 weeks and the new Samsung Gear S3, which in functionality to me looks the same (time, gps, variety of sensors, hearthrate and notifications), and also size wise is very similar, only lasts 2-3 days... Sure the screen is more vibrant but is that the reason for the reduced battery life?
because the s3 is most likely using wifi and gps all the time.
Living Survival is the s3 frontier and this garmin vastly different?
Hi.I was wondering what your promo code is for the Garmin fenix 3 watch. thank you
+Steve Burridge it's in the description. great price.
Does garmin comes with PC software to track or we have to buy 3rd party like strava?
Is it an sapphire edition or not? I've just bught sapphire, but there in no notice about this on back cover. I seen on youtube unboxing of sapphire edition that there is an 'sapphire' stated on the back. Wondering is mine a fake?
nope, it doesn't say it anywhere.
If I do Strength Training in a gym - how this watch could track callories I burn in this activity and current HRM rate ?
the watch is coming with a wrist heart rate monitor or you can a chest strap heart rate monitor - the build in wrist monitor is pretty ok for most activities but the chest heart rate monitor is a little more accurate - both will be used to calculate you calories burned
Is the Fenix 3 available as HR saphire?
i believe so.
i like it
So I'm getting one tomorrow but I'm having a hard time picking from Fenix 3 hr vs Fenix 3 sapphire. Someone had experienced their metal clasp on the sapphire metal wristband shoot off. What's your opinion on which one I should get? Thanks Living Survival
i have the sapphire and my bezel is all scratched but zero scratches on the face. its tough.
Hey, how did you set green minutes?
In the settings.
Curious about buying from Gearbest. Their BBB rating is an F. I can't find anyone stating anything positive about them on any forums, website, etc. their Whois registration looks extremely sketchy. Are they just another case of "if it's too good to be true..."?
Do you have the G7X with a Trump Toupee for wind noise reduction? Hahah
+Eric Lozano haha, homemade dead cat.
Are you steel doing the survival giveaway to the winner
yes a winner was picked.
YMMV.
Try swimming or showering with that Apple Watch and you’ll be sunk. This is waterproof to 100 meters.
$472.99 USD on gearbest right now
Great video Ben, wish I had the money!
When will you give away the survival kit to the winner
+Bushcraft Samuel soon.
Cool watch. Not for me, but cool.
+ZenithClarity1969 thanks for checking it out anyway.
just ordered one from there for $430
nice.
Curious how it worked out for you. How long did it take to get? Is it legit? Unopened? Still have manufacturers warranty? I've done some research on Gearbest, and none of it is good.
+31 - for - 2 it took about a month to get it. the box was unopened and works great. I would order from them again in the future.
I wish you would have let it fall in the toilet, so I would know if it was pee proof.
+Living Survival Awesome. Thank you for the quick response. Looking forward to getting the watch! In the military and this will be great to have!
