Dude, get a laser meter. Their only weak point is measuring locations lit by direct sunlight that make it difficult to see the laser dot. Otherwise, you can work alone, with nobody holding nothing for you. I use a 160ft range one, which has proven more than sufficient. Of course, you can have someone helping you with the tape, but you'll all can let go of the measuring tool.
If you want to go the extra mile, get a laser level. It'll also project a line on to the floor for guidance. I never really saw the need for it, but I would not mind if one ended up in my toolbox.

I am currently SMing for a production where our rehearsal space is one that doesn't allow us to leave tape on the floor. So I would/will need to tape out portions on the stage and take it up every time. How would you go about a minimal tape out that doesn't take to long to put down?

Could we see a video about conventions (SETC, USITT, etc.) As well as other places to find SM/ASM job postings? I have the skills and the training but I lack the details of the "finding" of jobs. Love your account and thank you for including all the details!

Hi! I have never used conventions as a way to find stage management jobs, but there are a few videos toward the end of The (Almost) Complete Guide to Stage Management about finding jobs!

@@HalfHourCall Thanks so much! And yeah I keep hearing it's the best way to get jobs (aside from their workshops, a ton of my classmates got jobs through them as well *I wasn't able to afford to go 2022*) so i was just curious if it was a big thing in terms of job searches as they made it seem it was 👍 thanks again!

@@micaelam1999 I think it’s more of a place to find internships/entry level stuff. I don’t know of anyone who regularly goes to the conferences specifically to get jobs once they’re out of that phase of career! I used the AEA list of EMC theatres, then visited each theatre’s website to see if they were hiring, and that landed me my first internship!

@@HalfHourCall oh then yes, probably. I'm a current student so it's kinda the only place I've heard for job opportunities for us. will totally look into the video you mentioned!

For up and over, add tapes off SL & SR and run U/D and your 90* will be automatic.
That said, I live by triangulation, especially for quick final documentation.

I rarely have a large enough team to add more tapes! But yes this a good trick!

Love the idea of putting Marley tape on corners!!
I'm an up and over... although sometimes if the set is bigger than the space I'll use the upstage wall as my origin point and measure down and over.
Consistent placement relative to the tape measure is key!
Pre-tearing your points is so helpful. I like getting each element connected ASAP so I don't get lost.
Someday I'll try the triangulation method. LOVE the command hooks tip!

Oh, and when I do use the upstage wall, I actually lay my tape across it and then measure out and THEN down to keep everything straight.

I tried the triangulation method for the first time a couple months ago and it’s pretty great. But I don’t know if it would work at all with your Vectorworks method!

      @@HalfHourCall furthering that algorithm...
It would be possible with the measure tool but it wouldn't be easier. Just more accurate since it's directly in the data.

@@Sunrek true!! Hopefully one of my ASM’s in the next few months will have to go play around with.
