Burnside, Kentucky- John Platt has more than 18,000 audio cassette tapes and is attempting to get listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. WDKY-TV, Fox 56, Reporter Marvin Bartlett
I’ve been listening to my cassette tapes all night and into this morning. I’ve played 11 so far, and have been cataloging them on Discogs. I have an auto-reverse 5 cassette changer, so listening to cassettes is super convenient.
Fantastic! What a brilliant, admirable collection! That's what I want as well, a nice library like that for my tapes and other media. I have loads and loads of cassettes too!
Counted up my tapes today and I have 990. I don’t like the rules of all tapes must have a barcode because some tapes came in big outer packaging with the barcode on a cardboard holder for example, not on the case itself. Plus that eliminates demo tapes and independent band releases without a record label. The coolest part of tapes for me is finding old demos or small band releases where maybe 200 exist max. Also duplicates, does that mean for example a New Zealand press and a Canadian Press of the same album won’t count despite different tape labels and even the cover art being different slightly? I went off on a rant but still, this is a great collection. I also have around 500 VHS tapes. Long live the analog tape format.
You do know to keep all these tapes in tip top condition, one must fast forward one side of each tape yearly and store them in the driest possible atmospheric conditions. Going to be a big job here!
My dad gave me Hendrix' Axis Bold as love + Rolling Stones Rewind. Even in Aus in 2020 picked up a tape by a Brisbane artist Orlando Furious. Still pick them up inc. a Clyde McCoy Blues album on tape when visiting bro in States (Ohio)
I would be paranoid that a fire might start or thieves breaking in, A old garage doesn't seem like a very safe and secure place to hold such a collection imo.
I collect all formats and love it.Like what he siad if you don't have pink Floyd in your collection. You don't have a collection.II could hang with this guy all day;.
Haven't even got sliver as much. I keep trying. I raid old stores, and go auctions. Got a pair of players in cold storage. (Case have worn out the ones I have) keep saving them om. 73 kv4li
*plays ferric tape on chrome setting* "plays perfect" Cool collection, but man... There's so much more to get out of those tapes than a cheap JVC double deck through cheap Japanese speakers can provide. Happy he enjoys himself though.
@@RWL2012 depends on your budget. There some really nice affordable machines out there. The Akai GX-32 springs to mind. And of course you can spend more and go for some nice nakamichi. Even those start relatively affordable. Generally Aiwa is a solid choice as well, especially up to 1990. JVC also did some amazing machinery, but not the super budget junk shown in the video, that is about as low as you can go while still buying a separate deck. It looks more serious than it is, this was literally their last effort and it was dirt cheap brand new. It's outperformed by the cheap mechanical jvc's from the late 80's. As for speakers; there is so many good ones, but generally it's smart to buy speakers from a brand that actually does speakers, mostly. Just not Bose ;). Japanese speakers are generally meh, except for many a Yamaha. There's a lot of good stuff coming from the US and UK. Too much to mention really. A cool budget speaker that's largely overlooked is the Wharfedale Diamond III. Want something bigger for a small amount of money? Try Tannoy R2's. They do need a bit of power to sing though.
Still have mine too plus my old vinyl nothing like your collection but I'd love to browse through it. Everytime I get a collection they change the format. Whats next?
I have The Wall on cassette :) The UPC requirement for the record is stupid. Many prerecorded cassettes don’t have them as the cassette format predates UPC codes, and also sometimes the UPC was on a sticker on the outside of the shrink wrap, not on the any part of the case that you would keep.
Hi, that was nice..i have a cassette tape collection as well and i would like to bring them all with me from Dubai to America. Is it ok to carry it with me in the luggage and i have divided them into 6 languages, will there be any problem in the airport? or custom Please help me to know about this cause I'm afraid entering United states having issue on my cassette tapes collections...
This guy ripped me off fails to pay me for cassette he brought from me even though I was nice to him and only charged him freight fares for the goods .... beware you don't fall into his deceptive trap
I have over 4,000 cassettes and I love them all John.I understand your passion for these plastic beauties. The art work takes on a different perspective because of the smaller space needed. The nothing like a great sounding cassette. The sound is "thicker" than CD and vinyl. f32vinylguy
I'd like to meet this guy someday , Ive got the same passion in life , long live tapes forever, now listen to simple mind tape...very nice
I'm fb friends with this guy and he's honestly the bees knees

I'd watch a whole documentary on this guy! He seems really interesting and well spoken
I freaking love this guy he's an ICON to me I can die in peace with such a great garage all full of music. I would love to meet you Sir.
No bar codes seems like an unfair rule. That would rule out tapes from the first decade or so of production.
Billy R it would also rule out a lot of legit imports and promotional releases.
It just occurred to me that it would also rule out many legitimate record club cassette releases.
I love Cassettes so much. I just started getting into them again. Thanks to this gentleman, I am not alone.
Cassettes are cool. I'm starting to get into them
very cool.
@Chuck Liddell If I don’t have the cassette for it, and if I don’t want to rip it onto a cassette, I’ll listen to it digitally.
Poser...
Fantastic! What a brilliant, admirable collection! That's what I want as well, a nice library like that for my tapes and other media. I have loads and loads of cassettes too!
This is the kind of guy you can get a beer with and talk for hours about music.
I got back into collecting cassettes a year ago, and I thought I had a lot with about 400 or so. That pales in comparison to what this guy has!
Good luck John. Keep collecting cassettes ! :-)
Thank you everyone John Platt Sr

So true. Back in the days they didn’t have barcodes.
@@elcompadj1 , Indeed... like in the 1970s.
Most record club cassette releases don’t have barcodes either.
Thumbs up for analog!

The Rolling Troll his gear wasn’t exactly high end, but he could do a lot worse.
@@danieldaniels7571 without going to portable radios it doesn't get much worse really :)
@@rollingtroll what equipment *do* you suggest for listening to cassettes...?

You got any Skeenayrd in your collection ???
Well they are becoming collectible so he was ahead of his time in 2017. That said I'm not sure I could cope with 18,000!

go on lad
I just want to ask if cassette tapes exposed for little while to heat may damage it
It can, depending on how much heat and how long. Always best to store in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight and any magnetic fields.
Got me beat that's for sure. lol.
Wow awesome I collect cassettes also
Bar codes came years after cassettes. They should change that rule.
Are you interested in buying any?
Super
