I just repaired my bathroom fan thanks to your video. The plastic fan rotor had slipped down the spindle and was making a grating noise, so after cleaning and adjusting, it works good as new. Saved me $140 on buying a new one!
I fixed my bathroom fan thanks to this video. It was clogged with years of dust and the cut washer-thing that kept the fan on the shaft of the motor was coming off. Thanks again for making this. You probably saved me a couple hundred bucks.
Thank you for the clear and detailed explanation. Good tip on using the air compressor to help clean; I wouldn't have thought of that and it worked quite well. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to repair my fan just by cleaning - it turned out the motor had a bad bearing. However, this video gave me the info and confidence to remove and disassemble the fan, give it a much-needed cleaning, and replace the motor (which was super easy and only like $15 on Amazon to get a new, universal motor). I've been suffering a noisy and slow-starting fan for years and now it runs beautifully!
Thanks for the video! After getting a new fan, I was able to replace it in five minutes. Between youtube and Amazon prime, I feel like I can fix about 90% of the things that break around the house.
Thanks! Cleaned and moved it up a little bit... To tighten the shaft to fan fitment, I put a 1" X 1" square of toilet paper over the shaft before pressing the plastic fan onto the shaft. This made for a TIGHT fit and I don't see the fan moving ever again. Thanks a lot! It's quieter than we ever thought possible.
Does that really work? Part of my problem is the nutone model I have had a lock washer that held the fan in place. It seems to have worn over time and doesn’t keep the fan tight, there for it has a little wobble while rotating which creates a bad sound. Trying to find something to put on the end of the shaft to hold the fan tight.
thanks for this video. we have a Broan-Nutone with a 57N2 motor. I removed it, cleaned/washed the plastic fan. After, I pushed the fan back down as close to the motor shaft, to reduce the wobbling. That reduced the vibration. Also, there's a flap that directs the sucked air into the duct. I removed that also, so the air is not being "flapped up and down", further reducing more movement. It reduced the vibration and unnecessary noise. This model still produce a standard 4.0 sones, as if from factory.
I have an early 1970's nutone exhaust fan in my bathroom- it was filthy dirty and wasn't moving air well so I decided to replace it... BIG MISTAKE. Today's modern fans don't have shit on my old nutone. When I installed the new fan I got the bathroom all steamy and turned it on to test it- it wasn't moving air very quickly. So I decided to clean and lubricate the old nutone. I cleaned the old one up like new, and re-installed it... then I did the same thing, got the bathroom all steamy and tested the old nutone... it sounds like an old Buick when it starts up and it clears the steam in seconds. I quickly realized why it was so much better... The new fan was operating at 1500 RPMs and the old nutone operates at 2800 RPMs. I hope it lasts a long time yet. Nutone sells a replacement motor for the exact model fan that I have, and even the replacement motor (although it looks exactly the same) runs at only 1500 RPMs. Does that have something to do with energy efficiency or something?
KLUNKET Sure does, Everything being made cheaper means that you will need to step up to the next model of fan to get the same results as your old fan. Good news is that the higher end models run very quiet. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video. Where can I find that new unit that you mentioned in the video? As I was cleaning mine, I've damaged the engine and I want to make sure a buy a new unit that will fit
Did you shut off the electric to that first mine just went like that and a few other videos said you need to shut off the breaker...you only unplugged it I don’t want to switch the breaker if I don’t have too
If you are only working on the fan all you would need to do is to unplug the fan. You should also turn the switch off but once it’s unplugged it’s good to go. Now if you are working on the housing for the fan then you may want to turn off the breaker. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.
You got the only video showing how to pop off the fan. Mines a little different than yours and I wasnt sure if it was just a compression fit or the shaft was peened over. Put the motor in my vice and used a screw driver to pry it off. Thanks.
I have NuTone QT series fans from 2003, 2 of them don't have a light, most of them do, the ones with a light are 3.5 sones 100 cfm, they have metal blower wheels, they just don't make fans like they used to
i wanna do this just paranoid that messing with it and putting it back I could have mess something up, bend a old wire or something and it could start a fire...

T love ///:
Great video, but my impeller keeps sliding down a bit. I wonder if I can slip on a locking clip on the top and bottom to prevent it from sliding down.
+dscanuck That sounds like it will fix the problem.
Broan 684.
The same as the newer ones but with a different grille, Some of the. Builder grade fans also had this grille. But this is more common.
Yep, thanks for watching.
Thank you, Hopefully it helped you out.

Very informative. Thank you for posting.
A little oil on the top and bottom motor bearings is a good idea as well.
Might collect dust and cause problems down the road. Thanks for watching.
