  • The expansive and level landscapes of North Africa facilitated swift maneuverability for both Axis and Allied forces during World War II. Nevertheless, this terrain also posed specific difficulties, particularly regarding anti-tank warfare. Conventional anti-tank guns were frequently sluggish and unwieldy, diminishing their effectiveness in the dynamic and rapid desert conditions.

    4.5mm won’t stop a rifle round but the intended purpose was to stop enemy armor at long range. 4.5mm will provide some protection from an artillery shell near miss, especially if the vehicle is dug into a fighting position.
    The US used half-track TDs in North Africa as well, equipped with what were essentially updated French 75mm guns. They performed well at killing the enemy if not always at keeping their crews alive.
    All in all I think the armor is there mostly for moral effect of the crew. A little armor might steel the nerves to hang in for another shot after a close miss.

    • @WynnofThule

      They probably would stop rifle rounds at longer ranges. If you've got a BAR and see a clear shot to light up an SPG from 500m away, would you take it? I would.
      I'd imagine that's the kind of case where it'd come in handy, as infantry certainly isn't supposed to get much closer than that in the first place.

    Krupp reworked the breach on the captured Russian guns to accept Krupp cartridges while using captured projectiles. The result was a gun more powerful than the Russian 76. The same weapon was used on a run of Marder 2s.

    I wonder why the wheels were left on. Was it to help mounting and dismounting the gun in case of use as a stand alone piece or was it a case of, it would have taken too long to design a mount that didn't use wheels?

      It also was a very cheap thing to make in a hurry. It costs a lot more resources to remove wheels and improvise a new mounting for bolting an existing gun directly on a vehicle hull. This way, all they had to do was remove the seats from the basic vehicle and they had a mobile AT gun.

    This might in fact be the rare case of German engineering done as cheap (?) and quickly as possible, indicated by totally useless "armor". Considering these haltracks were a) pretty expensive and b) in critical demand everywhere, "cheap" is not really the case.
    Which leads me to the question: WHY ?

    • @JeanLucCaptain
      @JeanLucCaptain Рік тому

      well the British had the 25 pdr porte gun-trucks and the Bishop SPG (also with 25 pdr gun) converted from a Valentine Hull. these conversions seem to be ever present in armoured warfare especially armoured desert warfare.

      It seems a very rushed job, which is not typical that early in the war.
      Also at the same time they were already working on more serious SPGs, what would eventually become the Marder familiy.

      @@ottovonbismarck2443 oh absolute, those things are not really armored (like all Pak-Wagen/Porte AT Truck solutions ... or HOT-Humvees/Recoiless Rifle Jeeps much later.
      But the thing is - at the time they needed those means to defeat tanks yesterday. The orders to develop something, that ultimativly became Marder II was given in Dezember 41 afaik, Marder I from Sonderkommando Becker came too late too. I think some IIIs landed in Afrika but not sure.
      Also you overlook one possible small bonus of that solution too, the Sdkf 6 was in use afaik by the DAF already ... so that makes spare parts supply potentially maybe a little bit less stressfull.
      All in all i agree with you, that this solution leaves much to be desired. like all AT trucks. But then again, it worked and therefore was better then nothing at all

    I feel like a lot of tankers regretted the fact that tooling and design drawings of original F-22 fell into german hands. Without that gun, germans would have had NO high velocity 75/76 gun until Pak 40 would be ready and would have to resort to using their dual purpose 8,8cm AA and 10,5cm field guns, which were heavy and hard to move and nigh impossible to hide, even more, leading to more losses.
    P.S.: 1)no, it doesn't use Pak40 shells as it predates it and had slightly higher caliber. "Hotdog in a hallway". Nobody was manufacturing brand new barrels just for this gun; 2)no, it doesn't use Pak 40 case either. Once again, it predates Pak 40. Moreover the breech was designed only for soviet 76mm AAA gun of 1931/38. It had shorter case of 558mm instead of Pak 40's 714mm(germans had very big cases since they've used slower burning, lower temperature mixtures to lower barrel wear). So it was save to drill the breech only to original case dimensions, Pak 40 case would just rip the gun to pieces; 3)no, neither USV, nor ZiS-3 can be modified this was as they were intended for smaller 385mm case from the beginning. Otherwise there would have been FAR more Pak36(r)'s around, not to mention that tens of thousands M1897 guns would also be modified into anything else other then HEAT lobber germans turned her in if it were so easy.
    Tl:dr only F-22 can be restored to this capacity to become Pak36(r) and it wasn't a german design, but surely germans were grateful for finding such a present waiting for them.

    i love these insanely long and complex designations the Germans love to give to these improvised self-propelled guns. ya i think whoever the crew on these extremely vulnerable vehicles must have been would not have enjoyed it very much as even a near miss by an HE or artillrey would be liable to fill the crew compartment with shrapnel. Also i love they left the wheels on, its an arrangement i see on a lot of armoured trains especially the improvised ones, where a light gun would literally be rolled into it's car on a turntable and bolted to the floor on a turntable to create a makeshift turret.

    • @jamesharms748
      @jamesharms748 Рік тому

      The British 6lber art also kept its wheels so it could be deployed not on the vehicle. And the Germans later had vehicles where they could deploy the turret. I think those were prototypes. Its easier to keep the carriage then design another new mount for gun. Imho.

This led to the Wehrmacht reusing captured enemy gear on a vast scale to fill logistical gaps. In this case, they captured vast quantities of Russian 76.2 mm field guns and their ammo from both defeated enemy troops and captured supply depots. Sorry. But this video gets a thumbs down from me. Because of the music.
    It does not fit in this type of videos. But if you absolutely have to have music in your videos.
    At least lower the volume of the music so we can clearly hear what the narrator says.
