Another great note about Yinu’s fight is that when the stage is just her, the music is clearly all classical, but the more her mother comes into the picture, the more the music shifts to EDM
@@maneoj46 Theres a reason why anime is important, because As much as I love rock and roll sadly it doesn't fit anime very well. Kingdom Hearts would not be as iconic as it is without the use of violin and piano because Organization 13 is about as anime as you can get.
In the full EDM version of the vs Yinu track you can on occasion hear what sounds like the cry of a child. Implying that Yinu is the one crying. Once you figure out Yinu's full story it becomes easy to figure out what she's crying about.
No Straight Roads is a game that's begging for a sequel that takes everything that makes the first game memorable, cranking it up to 11 and refines the gameplay.
Fun fact: The Mother actually has her own genre that plays when you fighter her: Dubstep. Adding to the "Mother taking over" thing, Dubstep slowly overpowers the classical music as the fight progresses, before reverting back to Classical right at the end when Yinu takes back control.

Oscar: "Don't worry, this isn't a Jasper Batt Jr. situation" Me, in my best mysterious old cowboy voice: "Jasper Batt Jr... Now there's a name I haven't heard in quite some time... Used to be those two fiery cowpokes and their fuzzy friend would count him down all the time. Those were the days, when the old guard spent their days pavin' the way for all manner of down counters. But now the algorithm's mosey'd on into town, and the west ain't so wild no more..." The voices in my head: "Yo who tf are you talking to dude" Me: "WHO ARE YOU TO ACCUSE ME-"
One detail I like about the Yinu fight is the very end. During the fall back onto the destroyed stage, Yinu's mother catches her child to protect her during the fall. However, when they land, Yinu's first and only concern is her piano. She doesn't thank her mother or show any sort of concern towards her, just towards the piano. Even during the beginning of the fight, Yinu yells at you to stay away from her piano. Their relationship has become so distant and strained that Yinu cares more about her own instrument than her mother. If fan speculation is to be believed, than the piano that ends up being destroyed used to belong to her now deceased father who got her into music in the first place.
Surprised you didn’t mention Neon J’s post battle rant about his service days and the in-game collectibles that actually add to the backstories to most of the NSR artists. I really hate to spoil but I have to mention them. SPOILERS. Subatomic Supernova has these audio recordings that show he wasn’t the most popular as a physicist(as in his lectures had audiences in the single digits) so he decided to go into music clearly just so people would listen to him more and couldn’t help but feel so small in the universe so he decided to spread his music not just through the world but through the cosmos by attaching drones to the NSR satellite that would launch from orbit and broadcast his music through the galaxy Sayu has these pieces of artwork that show she was born of a surprise collab that brought her devs together as friends. Yinu’s photos that show her father who taught her how to play but wound up in the hospital due to illness. 1010’s collectible figures that show Neon J was a toy maker before he was enlisted in the navy. Eve’s video recordings that show she actually hated herself when she was an art student and actually tried covering up her red half with makeup before meeting Zuke. They hosted a craft show together and seemed happy until Zuke was overwhelmed by her eccentric behavior and when she set his hair on fire. These end with Eve recording herself lamenting that there must be someone out there who understands her.
@@drewhaynes1874 I mean, he's not really explicitly confirmed to be dead, sure, but we can infer that's probably the case since he's literally never seen in the game outside of those collectibles.
Crazy idea for a game: The formula that No Straight Road did, but with movies. Imagine, each boss being a parody of film genres and the actors associated with said genre. Film Noir: A Humphry Bogart Expy Action: Arnold Schwarzenegger Expy Comedy: Charlie Chaplin/Buster Keaton Expy The final boss can be a producer like here or even a director.
How I see the sequel going is aliens coming to Vinyl city because of DJ Subatomic Supernova “message” pissed them off and now they’re here to destroy all of music. So now it’s a battle to save all of music.
@@MrChaotic4 yeah pretty much and a running gag would be them laying into DJ for the whole thing being his fault. A second option for a sequel would be a rival company in to try and take over vinyl city using their own artists. So yeah kinda your idea of having some other genre’s
And the best part about this game, this is just the surface, there’s a whole bunch of extra content you can earn from replaying the levels to learn a bit more of their history, my personal favorites being Zuke and Eve’s then Yinu’s involving her parents!!!
Another fun fact about DK West: his name is supposed to based on Dikir Barat. A type of choral singing popular in Malaysia and Singapore. It's based around music, movement, singing and poetry often in a competitive fashion. That pretty much DK West's rap battles in a nutshell.
Yinu’s piano is a gift from her father, the two would play together and I think it was the father who taught her to play which makes it even more sobering when you learn that her dad died of illness, likely cancer. the piano getting destroyed is like seeing her dad die a second time and the worst part is that it’s sort of our fault
"I'll be happy if I never have to hear the word 'Pyun' ever again." Before I even heard about this game, I made an OC who only says "pyun", Kirby-style. Kinda made me laugh hearing that quote tho.
I've must say that it's uncanny how upside-down our tastes are. Whenever I'm sitting there doing whatever, it's always SAYU or DK West or 1010's songs that pop into my head. Seeing them as the bottom 3 was hilarious, I gotta' admit. Pyun.
Response to all: 7. Yeah Sayu runs away and theirs so much to avoid, but I do like how she was created from those 4 creators. 6. I do appreciate the shadow puppet as well as the rap that explains the story explained. If you look closely when the DK West explains Nadia it says E V E.....foreshadowing. 5. I find it hilarious when the fans find out the bots truly are, if you look at the haircuts of the bots it’s a different attack from Neon J. 4.Tatiana is a fantastic antagonist and the plot twist is great as well. Although the boss fight revolves time, the bugs breaks the space time. 3. The fight, music, character, aftermath, back story, just one word: Beautiful 2. Why is no one attending his class? Anyway this man might as well be the god of DJ 1. That ending, sniff I’m not crying, there’s just onions here.
During the boss fight with Tatiana you can see a portrait of a mysterious fedora wearing guy to the far right along with the other boss portraits, hinting that there might be a jazz/swing inspired boss coming in the sequels or DLC
An additional bit of brilliance with the point you made about Yinu’s genre being pushed aside in favor of others: if classical/neoclassical music is a niche genre, why is it that a classical music artist is one of NSR’s top artists? Clearly, Tatiana has no qualms with Yinu honing her craft without any EDM involved, so it’s not that she has anything against outdated genres. It’s actually an early hint that Tatiana’s ban on rock is a lot more personal than it seems.
Yinu from what I can piece together is a fight of misunderstanding. In my theoretical opinion, I came to the conclusion that Yinu rise of fame was a misunderstanding. Yinu plays the piano to show her love for her mom, her mom on the other hand believes she is playing for fame and she schedules larger and larger performances to show her love for her daughter. Both dearly love each other but because of the larger and larger stages, it’s causing pressure on Yinu. That’s why she was lashing out to everyone in the final stage of the boss fight, the stress was to much and she snapped. This battle was both internal and external but with different opponents. We know of the external with Yinu and BBJ but the Internal was of expectations. Both sides won in the end.
Here's how I would rank them 7.Tatiana:a mess of a fight that leaves me unsatisfied and a straight up match against young xeonort(sorry if I said his name wrong)all because of the rewinding time thing. 6.DK west: a fight that is just too difficult, but the relationship he has with zuke is funny. 5.Yinu:this was almost perfect, but sadly the fight takes a nosedive of quality because of the 5th phase and it being almost impossible to get an S rank, and I beat DJ supernova by only parrys, but it's great storywise, the music is awesome, and the other phase were amazingly beautiful and fun, sadly one trip leads you near the bottom, but I'll still take this over the other two, especially Tatiana. 4.Sayu:great song, a decently fun battle, and a heart filled ending, it's a adorable little fight, wish we could fight her though, but its fine. 3.1010:the most underrated boss in the game, a fun challenge, and great sense of humor, and really shows that Korean Kpop artists are just superficial robots, the second phase does drag a bit, but it was all worth it, also neon j's jamaican accent is funny, and I do like how he cares for yinu. 2.Eve:well i have 2 things i don't like of the fight, one her design kinda bothers me a little, and the parry's make this fight a joke, but as part of the story shes perfect, the fight is imaginative, her love for zuke and hatred for mayday is cleverly shown in the fight and the ending is a chef's kiss. 1.DJ subatomic supernova:a masterpiece of a first boss, his battle is tuff but rewarding, the theme is a bop, the finisher is ingenious, and its beautiful, but the biggest reason I love him, it because he seems like his ego is bigger than any of the other artists, which makes him more satisfying to take down, he is the best fight in no straight Roads, and that's my list
I had actually made a fan version of 1010's battle, as I liked what was there, but felt that the fight revolved too much around waiting. Here is what we came up with Phase one would have all the members on floating platfotms, requiring you to parry, however, for players who don't like parrying, we also added a use for the cannons on the battleship. They would fire disposable robot bouncers, who would attack to the lower synths. These guys would drop a few notes when downed, and could be fired at the band. Phase two would keep the bouncers for added notes, but would also give the band different variations of their attacks to go with Neon J's various lines. This is also where the biggest change would be added: cars. Throughout the fight, two types of cars would follow the limo, fans, and 1010 fans. The 1010 fans would Take pictures with cameras, which would fire projectiles. Bbj fans would throw in healing items. In phase 3, the robot stays the same but with an added attack for white, shooting lasers across the battlefield, as well as adding police cars that would slide across the arena while Neon J is choosing an attack.
Also, one thing you didn't mention was the districts. Each artist has their own district where they have the most influence, and each one has a distinct style. My favorites are the ones belonging to Yinu and Eve.
Underrated gem from this year, glad that you made an appreciation video, I said to the director but I have this vibes from my favorite anime Symphogear. I’m on switch and sadly I don’t have the Christmas update 😢. For the VA, I still prefer the Japanese because let’s be honest Sayu sounds much cute. Edit Spoiler: I already knew that Yinu will be nº1 XD
@@Cata-qp6fi I wouldn’t mind a Symphogear game done in a similar gameplay-style as this one. Would be a massive improvement over the gacha-auto-battler mobile game.
Oscar:I wasn't sure what an antagonist for a game like this would be like, but Tatiana plays it really well character wise and design wise. Me:and backstory wise! also a neat little thing about DJ Subatomic Supernova, his name is actually so uh competitive with each other that it makes me forget his name but makes it even more like he is high of himself. Subatomic can be seen as cannot comprehend, as most people cannot comprehend the idea of subatomic particles, and supernova is a stage in a star's life cycle in which it DIES(explodes in the case of a supernova) so DJ Subatomic Supernova's name can be seen as DJ you cannot comprehend death. he certainly does think highly of himself if you think about his name that way.
Yinu is probably my favorite character in No Straight Roads, but there’s more to her and her mother under the surface. (Spoilers for Yinu’s backstory) So there are three pictures that gave context into the backstory of Yina’s family. It’s revealed that she was taught to play the piano by her father, who owned the eponymous piano (the first picture). When her father was around, her and her mother was a sweet family. In the second image, She participated in her first recital that got her into NSR. Unfortunately at the same time, her father was terminally ill. And by the third image, the father is no longer there, his piano played by Yinu, watched by her mother. Her relationship with her mother, while still loving, was strained by the combination of the loss of the father, Yinu’s rising fame in NSR and how to use that fame.
Theres a reason why anime is important, because As much as I love rock and roll sadly it doesn't fit anime very well. Kingdom Hearts would not be as iconic as it is without the use of violin and piano because Organization 13 is about as anime as you can get.
6. E-WAH! WAP BATTOW! 5. I do like 1010's vocal harmony during the fight. 2. DJ Neil Degrass Tyson. 1. "I heard this a craptillion times.' Me whenever "Call Me Maybe" and "Somebody That I Used To Know" comes on. I had to hear these pop songs so much during my middle school and high school years and it got annoying really fast. This is why I veered towards brutal hard-hitting metal. I thank Guitar Hero for getting me into rock and metal.
I gotta say that I loved Tatiana's fight the most, just because it was one of the only fights where I could predict attacks based solely on musical cues. Like I could tell in other fights when certain attacks were tied to parts of the song, but a lot of the time it felt more random, so I got hit by a lot of cheap shots. But with Tatiana, I didn't feel that at all.
Having finally gotten this game in time for Christmas I can say that I know exactly where your coming from with SAYU. Watching and listening is one thing, actually playing is another all together. That one thing alone dropped her from my #2 spot Out of all the characters in this game for me to cling on to, I did not expect DJ Subatomic Supernova to be it. I initially wrote him of as being one of the low points of the cast, both musically and in character. But overtime he I noticed how much I listened to his music, or how much I would qoute his lines with him whenever that boss popped up. Something about this DJ with a passion for the stars (and an ego as big as one) just kept drawing me in, and I still haven't quite figured out what.
Honestly calling eve a crazy ex girlfriend as some people do kinda misses the point. Eve is someone who desperately wants to find someone else who can understand her, she felt like she needed someone to complete her and the message of not needing someone else to complete you is a wonderful moral.
Oscar, are you forgetting about the overwhelming amount of ponds during your live stream? Yes I was there and I waved the tide of the brine. You were very salty that day. But later you Coral us into a corner and we had to quit splashing. Yes I am fishing four more puns, but at bass... I current-ly need to work on some r-eels. Hope to sea you later
I think this game reminds me the most of Psychonauts. Two games that from gameplay standards, aren't the best, but make it for it and more by being creative, clever, having great characters and beautiful designs and looks.
21:37 this aesthetic reminds me so much of Fate Grand Orders Van Gogh. It would feel terrifying if those to collaborated between music and art especially since fates Van Gogh is linked with a currently unnamed outer god
I played this for the first time recently and fortunately didn't find any bugs on PS4- I think maybe the final boss bugged a bit, but I might've just been bad.
I actually played No Straight Roads via a game demo at Gamestop before the Pandemic and my thoughts were a "duel action/rhythm game this is what a improved game in the Draglade series could've been like gameplay wise if Nintendo and Atlus actually decided to continue the series."
I don't know if I would rate these the same way, but I think I'd offer up similar praise to what you mentioned for all 7 on the list. I tend to rate Yinu at the top, then eve and Tatiana for their story relevance, then SAYU and 1010, then DK West and Subatomic. Subatomic just doesn't have the same relevance or meaning the other artists have. SAYU and 1010 are statements about their genres, eve and Tatiana carry great story, and Yinu is both a statement on child prodigies, but also plants the seeds for Tatiana's logical arguments to have more meaning, while still being quite meaningful herself.
I will say, In regards to Ten Ten, the Navy thing kinda reminds me of that weird Simpsons episode where Bart, nelson, and a few others end up starting a boyband and end up being given Lyrics with subliminal messages. Makes me question if it was intentional or not.
I can definitely see how cutting off Sayu's connection to her creators can get tedious and her battle is one with a lot of glitches particularly in the Switch version. But music wise I like Currents of love best out of all the NSR artists' songs.Maybe cuz it's the only one with lyrics that I can sing along to.Not to mention Sayu and her team of creators Remi,Tila,Dodo and Sofa ar the one of the only NSR artists that have an uplifting backstory rather than the somber and at times sad ones the others have.
Also it makes sense you're beating up sayu's files rather than sayu herself, if mayday and zuke were to beat her personally she would just be able to get back up with full health as she is a digital artist, beating her files is destroying her entire core. And considering that she has music, sound, design, video, CGI files, it would drag on until the final reverse mermaid phase.
Green scorpion : loves no straight roads Me : man, those straight roads would really hate him should they see this. (Before any misinterpretations occur, this is called a joke.)
Now I don't know MUCH on this particular theory but some believe since we see little to nothing of Yinu's father, and what with the flower's that are given at a certain scene I shall not spoil, that Yinu's father might be dead, and that piano was his last gift to her before he died. As to his cause of death it's really unknown. ranging from natural causes to some thinking some where much more darker. As for me....I don't know. I'll leave it to you what *you* think.
I personally LOVE this game. Yeah, it can glitch here and there (especially when you don't want it too) but the characters, music, and the theme really are topnotch stuff. I always crack up at 1010's fight only because I had friends back in the 90s that went through so many boy bands that the stereotypes the game has just makes me chortle every time. Yinu is a fantastic fight but if I had to choose, DK West probably is my favorite in terms of character. His rap battles are SO tough but the reward both from the cutscenes and the game are worth it. My least favorite is Sayu, too, but I get a kick out of the whole thing because the game is so well written. Helps that Mayday is so over the top and Zuke is the straight man. XD If we get a sequel, I am definitely getting it.
Another thing I should point out is that Tatiana's fight hints of a possible 8th NSR artist if you look at the stained glass on the far right. Even the devs of the game are aware of it and that's all they can say about it. Maybe a possible sequel or a future DLC in the works.
This video is a perfect example of why I love watching your work. You notice and manage to articulate the little details the new ones and the little hidden nuggets of information that could very easily be overlooked.
Yeah, I feel like that one would have worked better. As an ARMY, the BTS joke kinda made me cringe a little... it felt kinda forced, plus I've seen enough comparisons to my boys to last me a lifetime. (Not even the same amount of members for one thing...)
@@TekkenGirl4Lyfe Yeah 1010 are more on the lines of backstreet boys..BTR, Nysnc...Imo Kpop is included as BTS is technically a boy band, 1010 represent the boyband genre as a whole...Fun fact, their music before you encounter them is called "Backstreet Sync".
My own rankings: 7: 1010 because waiting was a worse slog than a chaser boss, and I expected more from the backstreet bots 6: DK West because the reverse guitar hero got to be total bs at points, especially in round three. 5: Eve, because for all the character development her fight provided, her fight was kinda unfair after mayday and zuke got split. 4: Sayu, because I have a bias for the vtuber mermaid. 3: Dj Subatomic Supernova, because for a first boss, he plays the part of an arrogant jackass well, not even caring for NSR as a whole. 2: Tatiana, because, while her past was fairly predictable, her fight was as difficult as a final boss is supposed to be. 1: Yinu, because children in the entertainment industry seem to go hand in hand with abusive parents wanting the limelight.
Haven't check your channel in forever, and I am so glad you have also gotten the chance to play this amazing game. One of the best games of 2020 in my opinion, despite the flaws.
I actually just got done listening (over and over) to a vocal cover of one of the game's songs, and this video was waiting for me back at the home menu! I'll admit that the main reason I'm a huge fan of this game is the artstyle and especially the music. Honestly, I don't really have plans to play this game since I only have a Switch, and the Switch version is apparently the worst version. But despite that, I will continue to support these developers hoping they can improve their craft, and their songs will always be in my playlist. As for the video itself, it's great as always, Oscar. Keep up the great work, and I hope you have a happy New Year!
@@Ramsey276one Look up Juno Songs. The cover is for 1010. It’s only been out for a couple weeks, and I’ve already listened to it maybe 50 times, if not 100! It’s so good that even the original composer is impressed with it! Just please don’t spam him with comments asking for the rest.
DK West speaks in a Semenanjung slang more precisely KL. I'm a Sarawakian. The Malay language is.... diverse so to speak, it all depends where you live in the district and/or state. Sarawakian malay is hybrid between three to four languages. There are times I am glad to be born in Sarawak at times but other like journey on offroad is a hassle especially the kampungs.
1010 hair are designed after what theyll doin the giant mech phase, blue is square cause of the bars in the attack sequence, green has hole as the markers of secure the perimeter, reds head looks like a saw because of the re-entrive strike saw, and yellow, even if it looks as a drill, upside down on the mech looks like a bullet/bomb for the collateral damage.
No Straight Roads seems like a good game... but not gonna try it. Anyway, 7. Sayu, a cutesy mermaid on par with Hatsune Miku. Phase 3 is Techno Troll and Phase 4 is Slayers fishmen. Kinda wish her creators made a robotic shell for her. Also, Sayu vs. Tsunemi from Goddess Black Heart, who would win? 6. Zuke's brother... okay no words. 5. Okay, it would've been nice if, like the battle with Madarame from Persona 5, each of those guys would have different elemental blasts. Also, rush them? More like Rush them Big Time... And no NKOTB reference? 4. A former rock star turned producer. Reminds me of Mok from Rock and Rule. who would win? 3. Ah, a gender-bent Two-Face. Very artistic. Too bad for her fight the white half doesn't shoot lasers and the red half is shooting fire. 2. Very basic, yet very interesting. 1. Now that is strong. Classical Music should make a comeback. The likes of Beethoven and Mozart should be proud. So which fighter would make it in the remake of Top Ten Musician Fighters?
Oh, there's actually a reason why the white side isn't as attack heavy as her pink one, it's also the same reason why the music is more aggressive on Mayday's side. Eve doesn't like May, and considers her unworthy of Zuke, so she just goes off on her when she splits them up, and Eve wants Zuke, and cares about him, so she's a lot softer on her attacks.
I'm with you, while the game isn't perfect i find it amazing and clamped onto it hook, line, and sinker. Hope you have an ice day and keep up the good work.
YES!!! I’m excited for this countdown! I have the same feelings about this game. I have the Switch version and I feel like it got the short end of the stick. In some boss cutscenes the bosses weren’t as animated. For instance, Neon J was freaking out about his flying factory exploding and Eve’s laugh after she accuses Zuke and May that they have a strong bond. Also some voice clips were missing like when Zuke is supposed to say that he has a master’s degree in music during the Yinu boss fight but for some reason doesn’t say it and the conversation where Zuke goes into the white void after Eve is completely absent. It’s quite a shame because those were some of my favorite parts and it it just loses some charm. I hope that the will fix these issues in a patch or the Christmas update because I want to enjoy physically playing this game more. But to me the characters, music, and dialogue just makes me not completely dislike this game. There isn’t one character I truly dislike. Besides the bugs and glitches I would hope that they tune down the difficulty on the DK West 3rd encounter because I wanted to pull my hair out. Also I feel like bosses do a lot of damage which can be annoying. But other than that I can appreciate this game for what it is. Sorry for the long comment, I just feel passionate about this game. 😂 If anyone has similar issues with the Switch version then let me know! I’d be interested to hear other people’s experience with it.
When you think about it, it does make sense they put DJ Sub and Yinu as the only bosses in the demo for NSR, their battles are fun and the music is amazing!
As I said during the stream of the christmas version.. Yinu is also the best example of show don't tell. The MORE you anaylze every symbolism in this fight.. the deeper it gets. The mom being a dry rooted tree. She's the roots of Yinu and what keeps her "grounded" Also if you listen closely to the mom moving.. you can hear "tree like movements" You know the cracking of the wood. Also in the phaze where it's just the moms face and the rooted cage.. every piano hammer is covered with these roots! You said it yourself.. Yinu is like a puppet.. and HERE.. you see it.. The roots of the mother moving the key hammers on the field. Forcing her to play! The other thing is in the standard mode.. the song isn't EDM at all at the start.. it gets more and more EDM the mother comes into the picture. Showing how the EDM isn't Yinu's decission.. but the MOTHER'S. And the more she shows herself.. the more the EDM takes over and the more powerfull she gets... simply put.. she makes Yinu popular with her behind the scenes stuff. As for her main story.. yea.. if you collect everything you know why it's sad. But in the fight it self.. you know how Yinu values her piano and music. Her Mom values her family's legacy and keeping the music being popular. Yes it was all about LEGACY and unable to move on. As I said.. Yinu's fight to the finish shows more and more of show don't tell and is the 1st time you feel SORRY for fighting. Shame 1010 kinda ruins the atomsphere at the end.. he tries to be tragic but it falls flat. If I could change 1 thing of this game is switching 1010 to before Yinu. Have this silly dramatic thing going on 1st. Then Yinu with real drama, questioning it.. then top it off with Eve's... 1010 is suppose to show how bad the world of music is and someone like NSR makes artists suffer too... but ugh.. still put that infront of Yinu. As Yinu also portrays this in her fight just as good if not better. Anyhow.. good video Oscar and see you later!
I get the feeling that I song that Yinu plays at the end of the battle is the first song she played for mother. Giving the reason why she snaps out of it
7: I actually really enjoyed this one. I got a musical mind so the homing fish attacks did not mess with me too much. 6: Only liked one of these fights, the other two can piss off with their bullshit difficulty. 5: I took great pleasure in punching these guys in the face. 4: I LOVE this theme. Both the EDM and the Rock version. The fight was difficult for me at first but I think I listened to the music far too often because I was able to get the patterns down easily after that. 3: This would actually be my number 6.(1010 is 7) Eve's got a great backstory, yes. But I just found this fight to be... irritating at points. 2: Nothing to add. This dude bops. 1: Personal favorite as well. The aesthetic, the music, and a great subtle way of incorporating backstory that we would've never known into a fight... alongside a very very heartwarming reconciliation.
yeah I agree. Eve's fight has some cool moments and has an interesitng backstory...but the actual fight, for me at least, was way too difficult and ended up becoming a mess of bullshit being thrown at you wildly. Tatiana and Yinu's themes are the best songs in the game, in my opinion, and have some really good moments of the music being synched to the attacks.
I still can't believe I didn't recognize Kaori from Azumanga Daioh in 2:58... but then again, I didn't read the omnibus manga or watch the anime in both dubs back in 2020.
I agree that NSR sold me more on on its charm than its polish, but it was definitely a solid favorite out of the games I played last year. Oh, and nevermind just listening to the OST on UA-cam... I bought the soundtrack, too.
I made my own set of No Straight Roads Artists. 7 members of a supergroup and each member represents a subgenre of metal. I haven't given them names yet buuuuut... *Bassist - Thrash Metal *Rhythm Guitarist - Glam Metal *Keyboardist - Goth Metal *Drummer - Prog Metal *Turntablist - Nu-Metal *Lead Guitarist - Metalcore And last but not least... *Singer - Death Metal (He's the final boss BTW)
I thought it was sayu's voice actor, (bottem), animator, (top), mocap artist, (left*), and editor, (right) *also I just learned that mocap is the term for that
You know what I'd like? A game that was along these lines, but was also a major commentary on how _actual music_ was usurped for a while by people with synthesizers and special effects. Sayu and 1010 would still make good bosses in that direction, and Tatiana would fit in without much difficulty, while fighting Yinu would be counterproductive to the message (I don't know nearly enough about DJ'ing, rap, or...whatever the heck Eve's style is...to know where they would fall). And in a lot of ways the point wouldn't even be usurping the other artists--it's showing them that their songs would sound much better when sung with real voices and played on real instruments. Remind people what music with depth sounds like!
Another great note about Yinu’s fight is that when the stage is just her, the music is clearly all classical, but the more her mother comes into the picture, the more the music shifts to EDM
And when She goes all out in the finale, the meter can't decide what type of music it is anymore. Classical is in a league of its own.

No Straight Roads is a game that's begging for a sequel that takes everything that makes the first game memorable, cranking it up to 11 and refines the gameplay.
i legit been seeing a lot of comments wanting to see NSR just be a full on anime/cartoon
@@DarkSymphony777 Maybe have it called 'No Straight Roads: Hit The Beat'
@@charadreemerr4195 i don't care what they call it as long as it's cool
I said the same about Brutal Legend
And imagine having a stage where you can play as the NSR Artists, or at least showing BBJ being buds with these artists.
Fun fact:
The Mother actually has her own genre that plays when you fighter her: Dubstep.
Adding to the "Mother taking over" thing, Dubstep slowly overpowers the classical music as the fight progresses, before reverting back to Classical right at the end when Yinu takes back control.
pretty ironic how its usually the younger generation that would enjoy dubstep more and the older enjoying classical
@@mochiboni2560 Theres a reason why anime is important, because As much as I love rock and roll sadly it doesn't fit anime very well. Kingdom Hearts would not be as iconic as it is without the use of violin and piano because Organization 13 is about as anime as you can get.
Oscar: "Don't worry, this isn't a Jasper Batt Jr. situation"
Me, in my best mysterious old cowboy voice: "Jasper Batt Jr... Now there's a name I haven't heard in quite some time... Used to be those two fiery cowpokes and their fuzzy friend would count him down all the time. Those were the days, when the old guard spent their days pavin' the way for all manner of down counters. But now the algorithm's mosey'd on into town, and the west ain't so wild no more..."
The voices in my head: "Yo who tf are you talking to dude"
Me: "WHO ARE YOU TO ACCUSE ME-"
Yinu was number one easy. Best theme in the game, and a great self-contained narrative.
@@corneliussnow8215 It's not fan speculation, they literally show in game that it's the same.
Surprised you didn’t mention Neon J’s post battle rant about his service days and the in-game collectibles that actually add to the backstories to most of the NSR artists. I really hate to spoil but I have to mention them.
SPOILERS.
Subatomic Supernova has these audio recordings that show he wasn’t the most popular as a physicist(as in his lectures had audiences in the single digits) so he decided to go into music clearly just so people would listen to him more and couldn’t help but feel so small in the universe so he decided to spread his music not just through the world but through the cosmos by attaching drones to the NSR satellite that would launch from orbit and broadcast his music through the galaxy
Sayu has these pieces of artwork that show she was born of a surprise collab that brought her devs together as friends.
Yinus dad was not confirmed to be dead just that he is in the hospital that was all
OK... My heart... I hear it falling apart.
Neon J single handedly redeemed 1010 from being a forgettable fight for me.
@@winterdragon2004 i dont care how underwelmingly the fight potentially is i love those guys
Film Noir: A Humphry Bogart Expy
Action: Arnold Schwarzenegger Expy
Comedy: Charlie Chaplin/Buster Keaton Expy
The final boss can be a producer like here or even a director.
Makes me wish for a No Straight Roads 2 or expansion dlc with even more artists.
If that was the case i want heavy metal artist to be a main villain (would make sence, because heavy metal and rock are close but totally diffrend)
How I see the sequel going is aliens coming to Vinyl city because of DJ Subatomic Supernova “message” pissed them off and now they’re here to destroy all of music. So now it’s a battle to save all of music.
I wouldn't mind seeing a country, soul, funk or reggaeton artist.
@@IrishKatana So it's like a mix between Trolls: World Tour and Pixels?
@@MrChaotic4 yeah pretty much and a running gag would be them laying into DJ for the whole thing being his fault.
A second option for a sequel would be a rival company in to try and take over vinyl city using their own artists. So yeah kinda your idea of having some other genre’s
"Neil DeGrasse Titan" has to be my favorite bit of wordplay in the history of language, I love it
And the best part about this game, this is just the surface, there’s a whole bunch of extra content you can earn from replaying the levels to learn a bit more of their history, my personal favorites being Zuke and Eve’s then Yinu’s involving her parents!!!
I love how dj subatomic supernova used to be a teacher before he became an artist. he literally teaches you how to play.
Now if only he could take that galatic sized ego down a few
@@Nitro89Honestly, he is not even egoistical. Subatomic basically means small. He has enough self aware as i can give him that much.
I just yeeted myself in without question just because of my NSR Addiction.
"I'll be happy if I never have to hear the word 'Pyun' ever again."
Before I even heard about this game, I made an OC who only says "pyun", Kirby-style. Kinda made me laugh hearing that quote tho.
That’s cool
I've must say that it's uncanny how upside-down our tastes are. Whenever I'm sitting there doing whatever, it's always SAYU or DK West or 1010's songs that pop into my head. Seeing them as the bottom 3 was hilarious, I gotta' admit.
Pyun.
Response to all:
3. The fight, music, character, aftermath, back story, just one word: Beautiful
2. Why is no one attending his class? Anyway this man might as well be the god of DJ
1. That ending, sniff I’m not crying, there’s just onions here.
honestly surprised there was no Jazz based artist in the game.
Maybe there'll be one in the sequel, assuming we get one.
I think Electro Swing would make more sense because, y know, EDM
During the boss fight with Tatiana you can see a portrait of a mysterious fedora wearing guy to the far right along with the other boss portraits, hinting that there might be a jazz/swing inspired boss coming in the sequels or DLC
@@jinhunterslay1638 I saw that too, I wonder what it could be
Or mariachi.
the one thing that would've made this game even more great was a boss fight against Kliff
I mean we kind of get that at the end but it's less of a boss more of like a run and smash sort of thing
Fun fact! Yinu’s music is actually called “neo-classical” ,”neo-classical” means playing classical with some modern tricks!(cool fact!)
Good one!
Thankfully for Yinu classical is still alive and well with games and movies.
Here's how I would rank them
7.Tatiana:a mess of a fight that leaves me unsatisfied and a straight up match against young xeonort(sorry if I said his name wrong)all because of the rewinding time thing.
Here is what we came up with
Phase one would have all the members on floating platfotms, requiring you to parry, however, for players who don't like parrying, we also added a use for the cannons on the battleship.

For the VA, I still prefer the Japanese because let’s be honest Sayu sounds much cute.

(Spoilers for Yinu’s backstory)
So there are three pictures that gave context into the backstory of Yina’s family.

1. "I heard this a craptillion times.' Me whenever "Call Me Maybe" and "Somebody That I Used To Know" comes on. I had to hear these pop songs so much during my middle school and high school years and it got annoying really fast. This is why I veered towards brutal hard-hitting metal. 15:30 is my favorite part because that is something I didn’t even catch during the fight. Changing the time signature mid-verse... that’s impressive.
I’m Excited for the Age of Calamity video when you end up finishing it, I LOVE the game’s story, playable characters, and gameplay SO MUCH!
Imagine if the final boss was the master of stock corporate ukulele music.
As a huge vocaloid fan it makes me really happy to see that it is represented in this game. Shame about the actual fight but it still makes me happy.
Having finally gotten this game in time for Christmas I can say that I know exactly where your coming from with SAYU. Watching and listening is one thing, actually playing is another all together. That one thing alone dropped her from my #2 spot
Out of all the characters in this game for me to cling on to, I did not expect DJ Subatomic Supernova to be it.
You convinced me to try this game. I got it on ps4 since you said the switch port is buggy
Honestly calling eve a crazy ex girlfriend as some people do kinda misses the point. Eve is someone who desperately wants to find someone else who can understand her, she felt like she needed someone to complete her and the message of not needing someone else to complete you is a wonderful moral.

I love each theme of the artists from DK west rapping to DJ subatomic supernova sending us into space with his deep space wubs
Also they call the game no straight roads but the viechle you battle 1010 on is on a straight road
Four nerds in a digital trench coat
Also it makes sense you're beating up sayu's files rather than sayu herself, if mayday and zuke were to beat her personally she would just be able to get back up with full health as she is a digital artist, beating her files is destroying her entire core. And considering that she has music, sound, design, video, CGI files, it would drag on until the final reverse mermaid phase.
14:45 Also, you know, lighting his hair on fire
Green scorpion : loves no straight roads
Me : man, those straight roads would really hate him should they see this.
I hate playing Sayu's boss fight but the song saves everything. imo VS. SAYU is the best song to come out of this game it's SO good
I personally LOVE this game. XD
If we get a sequel, I am definitely getting it.
DK West has a Shadow Stand.
He's the Man, he is the Best!
Yinu she live up her father legacy and his pinao is to remember as a memory.
Its not confirmed her father was dead!
In fact for all we know, her father could be neon j
Another thing I should point out is that Tatiana's fight hints of a possible 8th NSR artist if you look at the stained glass on the far right. Even the devs of the game are aware of it and that's all they can say about it. Maybe a possible sequel or a future DLC in the works.
Now I'm gonna add this to my list for the New Year!

DJSS is wearing pants. Just shorts to be exact.
My own rankings:
7: 1010 because waiting was a worse slog than a chaser boss, and I expected more from the backstreet bots
6: DK West because the reverse guitar hero got to be total bs at points, especially in round three.

So which fighter would make it in the remake of Top Ten Musician Fighters?
I think it would actually be Mayday and her guitar.

I’d describe this game as a diamond in the rough, it’s a gem, but it still needs some extra polish. Gameplay wise anyway.
Well, you've convinced me. I wanna play this game now.
Hello, switch player here and I understand your feelings. 😊
@@Cata-qp6fi Thanks! Hopefully the Switch version can be of the same quality as the other console versions soon.
Yep I hope too, in my gane I don't have the Christmas update
@@Cata-qp6fi Me neither. I think they are still working on the Christmas update for the Switch version that will hopefully come with some fixes.
Ironically after this video the Encore Edition update was released which also added a new remix for every boss.
Giving the reason why she snaps out of it
Not a bad countdown, I liked it especially since it covers things about the game I never knew about until now.
Seriously! This games art style reminds me so much of psychonauts!
Awesome list as usual, dude!
For a future countdown, how about Top 10 Aliens in Video Games?
"ugh" "ow" "not the face"
One of the things I like about the boss soundtrack is that theirs both an EDM version and a rock version
I love this video sense the Top 15 Punch Out Boxers
I still can't believe I didn't recognize Kaori from Azumanga Daioh in 2:58... but then again, I didn't read the omnibus manga or watch the anime in both dubs back in 2020.
pyunee~ sorry i had too to mess with scorp
Can’t wait for you to do a list on Hi Fi Rush.
I've been WAITING FOR THIS ONE!!!! YASS MY KING!!!!
I can't believe you put sayu on 7- 😭 SHE'S GOT ONE OF THE BEST MUSIC- 😭 SURELY, THE MUSIC SHOULD MAKE UP FOR IT- 😭
Great, you make me want to play the game, Green Scorpion
I agree that NSR sold me more on on its charm than its polish, but it was definitely a solid favorite out of the games I played last year.
Oh, and nevermind just listening to the OST on UA-cam... I bought the soundtrack, too.
I made my own set of No Straight Roads Artists. 7 members of a supergroup and each member represents a subgenre of metal. I haven't given them names yet buuuuut...
*Bassist - Thrash Metal
*Rhythm Guitarist - Glam Metal
*Keyboardist - Goth Metal
*Drummer - Prog Metal
*Turntablist - Nu-Metal
*Lead Guitarist - Metalcore
And last but not least...
*Singer - Death Metal (He's the final boss BTW)
Could be possible for a potential sequel.
Now I want to see a No Straight Roads X Brutal Legends crossover
I thought it was sayu's voice actor, (bottem), animator, (top), mocap artist, (left*), and editor, (right)
*also I just learned that mocap is the term for that
You know what I'd like?
I haven’t even played this game, but DJ and 1010 are my favorite bosses of this game! (Character wise I suppose.)
