You guys were extremely lucky. Wow. Clearly not paying attention. Wow. When I was towing in 1980 the old timer told me never turn your back to traffic and have your head on a swivel. 🙏🙏🙏. Good job Mr Hal and crew.

Well I’m glad that everyone seems ok after that. It could so easily have been much worse. Mr Hal, your crew were excellent as always. Slow Down and Move Over people. My old driving instructor used to say, “Look at the gap, not the lights.” Whether head on or like this situation, checking the gap you have to go through is much safer than being dazzled. Please SLOW DOWN people.

Great job Mr Hal. There is no doubt that the Troopers car saved your lives . Then to hear her say what happened?? Well lady had you been paying attention you would know what happened. That makes me so angry when people just don't pay attention especially on wet slippery dark roads. I almost got hit when I was a FF, I was using my car which had a full size LED light bar and Strobe Deck lights to block a lane and the person that almost hit my car said they were looking further up the road at all the lights and didn't see my lights. It all comes back to, Slow down and pay attention. I'm very glad no one was seriously injured especially you guys out there with very little protection. I would like to say that I hope people see this and learn from it but the reality is that it won't happen. Thanks for the video Mr Hal. You guys be safe out there.

I said it when my truck got hit that it is hard to call it a "near death incident" when not a scratch was put on me, but my truck was struck at 50 miles per hour just a few feet past where I was standing so in reality it was a near death situation as a few feet closer and I likely would not have made it through the impact that would have been to my person, So although there is no injury to justify calling some incidents "near death" they still very much can be near death by the fact that if even one component of the incident had gone differently we would not be here today.
I am not a religious man but my father is and he likes to state that my guardian angel pushed the vehicle out of my way and a few feet forward into my truck. I'm sure this incident for you feels the same way where you have not even a scratch on you but you feel as though you could have or would have died if anything had gone differently.
    Glad you are okay.

I watch several Wrecker channels and I realize how very dangerous it is out there with traffic whizzing buy you with sometimes only inches to spare while they're cruising along at 70&80 mph. Not to mention being on the phone, not paying attention to the flashing lights, never mind slowing down. What the hell's the matter with people? I know this crap happens and I pray all the time that I never see one but finally DID. Just glad there were no serious injuries and that ya'all's crew is OK. Be safe out there guys and watch each others back.

It is a interesting video. Its night and raining makes it that much more dangerous. Unless you have done a recovery on the road People will never know or understand what's it's like having traffic flying past you while you're hooking up a vehicle. Which you know and understand. I don't think that recovery operator's get enough credit and respect they deserve. Thanks for the videos. God Bless You and your Family and your Crew.

I sold everything I had back in 84 and quite trying to get killed on the side of the road. My 75 L600 was hit and burst into flames, that truck was completely gone. I have pictures of it and a couple cop cars that were broadsided while working different wrecks. It's crazy out there and I'm damn happy I sold all my trucks and gear.....I'm happy everyone is ok.

The Trooper had his vehicle parked correctly. We used to park firetrucks that way too. I was a volunteer firefighter for a good number of years. It's just a way to show motorists the road is narrowing down and as in your case to deflect vehicles away and save lives of all working the scene. Hope the Trooper is okay. We will keep him and all of your crew in our prayers. This incident could have been more serious.

Mr. Hal. God was watching over everyone on the scene. I honestly don't know why people have to be so inconsiderate to not move over. In my opinion the woman was not paying attention she could have ruined some lives that night. She should get a stiff fine. Here in Virginia it is now a state law that everyone has to move over for anyone on the side of the road in addition to the federal move over law. Virginia state police are enforcing the move over law with big fines. Thanks for video. Glad all of you are safe.

If people can’t concentrate and slow down and move over they should not have a license. Glad nobody got really hurt and glad you guys didn’t get harmed in any way. Accidents happen, but between the emergency lights on that patrol car and on two tow trucks, you can't even claim that was an accident. That was a case of at least driving too fast for the person's abilities or at most totally disregarding reasonable driving habits.
Far too many tow trucks operators, emergency workers and law enforcement personnel are crippled or killed because someone chose to ignore reasonable safe driving practices.
In your line of work, close calls are inevitable, it's just good to see that all's it was was a close call and nothing worse.

people drive with there heads up their backside. Driver inattention every one is in a hurry to get nowhere. I drove wrecker for 38 years had to dive into a ditch while winching a car from the ditch on interstate 190 as a car slid into the back of the wrecker that I was operating. Had many other close calls over the years. About 14 years ago an operator south of us in Erie County was loading a car on a rollback was cut in half as a driver under the influence struck the back of the flatbed drove up the side where the operator was standing. Drivers please slowdown and move 🙏 over. 😢

You guys were lucky. Main thing is nobody got hurt. I think that lady may have been on her cell phone cuz when you open the door up she had her cell phone plugged in and it was on her lap and then she said what the hell happened give or take was words so she may have been on her phone. But they'll find out up here in Ontario or I live. It's the law. If you see tow trucks emergency vehicles on the road you have to slow down and move over but down there I didn't seem like anybody was slowing down. It was just like a regular day to them. All the lights you had on and still somebody runs into you too much. Main thing is you guys never got hurt your equipment or whatever. But yeah I think it was a cell phone that's me. 👍👍🙂🇨🇦

There are some people driving vehicles who should never be allowed to do so. They are so insulated/isolated inside their vehicle they have no idea what is happening outside.
They should go back to horse and buggy, at least that would ensure there was some intelligence on the vehicle.

Don't mean this wrong but I swear people are oblivious to flashing lights anymore and act like it would be absolutely a horrible waste of "there" time to have to slow down, pay attention and actually give respect to law enforcement and first responders. I saw her phone on her leg when you opened her door, and then to hear her have to ask what happened? Really! She couldn't see "all" the flashing lights!? Please, for crying out loud people, wake up, pay attention, SLOW DOWN when you see flashing lights and again, pay attention and move over please! Someone's life is at stake behind those lights. They're doing their job and would like to get home safely to their family also. God Bless y'all and be safe out there, Lord knows it's a rat race circus and nowadays it seems like people don't really care.

People need to learn to slow down and move over. I was changing a tire on a Ford Explorer a few years back on a 2 lane highway and they were flying by so close and fast that they knocked it off the jack. It's a shame you can have a wrecker or rollback sitting behind a vehicle with the strobe lights flashing and people don't pay attention of try to slow down. Stay safe out there!

Mr. Hal, As you know so much better than any of us, many troopers, officers, and emergency workers like you folks lose their lives every year while working on accident scenes. People just don’t slow down enough or use enough caution as if a family member of theirs was the one working the accident. In many states the fines for speeding in accident areas are sky high and given out by the scores. I’m all for that.

Troopers don’t get enough credit for saving lives. In nine years of EMS and Fire Rescue, they covered by behind a heap of times. Drivers don’t pay attention or just don’t care. A friend who was a Trooper had a car get so close to him at a traffic stop that it hit his handcuff carrier on his belt and knocked him onto the hood of the car. They are like every public servant, don’t get paid enough for the job! Keep it up Hal! Show how you all need more recognition!

Mr Hal.. Even with the spoiler alert up front, I still had the shivers and goose bumps watching that. With all the years in the fire service, I had less anxiety and fear going into a burning structure than working along an active roadway. I have watched more and more departments repurposing retired apparatus into blocker vehicles for this very reason. In my second career in construction, the fear is still there. I use the biggest iron available as a blocker and the more light, the better. I am sorry the trooper was injured, but thank the good Lord his vehicle was there and more thankful he backed up like he did to increase the buffer zone. More of these types of videos need to be put out there in all communities for people to see. Thank God you and your team are alright.

City police, county sheriffs, highway assist crews, and State troopers who provide lane blockage and early warning for accidents/incidents on all the roadways save life's, as a retired paramedic and firefighter I could not count how many times their presence has saved lives. Move over, slow down and put your phone down! My only complaint/issue is the use of flashing or steady white lights facing into on coming traffic, at night they can cause temporary night blindness from the bright white lighting constricting the pupils, many times I have came up on emergency/construction vehicles with the white lights flashing into my eyes and have felt less safe because my vision was impaired, if even for a moment can be too long to avoid a mishap - just my observation and opinion.

That was both a reminder of danger of working on stationary vehicles, and why lane blocks are in place, vehicle recovery must work with, or work under law enforcement.
Safe recovery takes time, but most commuters and delivery drivers just think of themselves, massive change in human behavior when inside a vehicle.
Driver tiredness is a big factor in traffic incidents ( I don't like the word accidents here).

I wonder if the vehicle that hit the troopers vehicle was blinded with all the flashing lights? I also think if it hadn't hit the troopers vehicle, it could have hit the back of your big wrecker, if all of you were out of the way, the first vehicle's driver's family might have had a funeral to attend.
BUT, the way the lady was responding to you, I got the impression she didn't know what happened, maybe a medical reason, OR just wasn't paying attention to what was going on around her.

I live up north, and they put a new law in place a few years ago, it covers not only first responders and emergency personnel, but tow truck operators as well, if you fail to slow down, and change lanes away from their accident scenes, not only will you be ticketed, but losing your license to drive is a real possibility. I think it should be held as an example the rest of the country needs to follow. Why people don’t slow down when they see emergency lights is beyond me, what is so important that it’s worth taking someone’s life, who’s trying to help someone else out? I drove a concrete mixer for many years, and did countless pours on the side of high speed interstate highways, people just don’t care, no matter how vigilant you are, a vehicle at 70 mph is a weapon, aimed right at you. That lady knew exactly what happened, she was speeding and careless, and I wouldn’t doubt if she was on the phone. Glad you all are OK, thank God you had a good patrolman on the scene, the outcome might’ve been tragic for you or your crew. Be safe.

In my state, it's the law ( for what that means) to move into the opposite lane from a trooper, with emergency lights on, when it's safe to do so. At night, the trooper's lights can be seen for quite a distance. Why would they even wait to move over and not slow down!!?!?!?!

I noticed the traffic going by. Some people were slowing down and others were just flying by. A couple of semis didn't appears to slow down at all. Some people must only look a few feet in front of their vehicle. People can watch videos on their phones so it's worse than it's ever been. They need to require systems in vehicles to slow them down. Emergency vehicles could have a transponder that puts out a signal and vehicles have a receiver that would tell the computer to slow the vehicle. They have to make the vehicles smarter because there are many drivers who can't learn. The lady didn't even know what she hit.

The lady was probably looking at the flashing lights and just didn't steer away. People hit the direction signs on the interstate from staring at it when they go off the edge of the pavement. Florida just put more teeth in the 'move over' laws. I really don't think any state enforces the "move over" law because the judges don't fine as they should. I am glad your guys were not injured. The trooper did move his car and did the angle parking. Great job on his part.

You need to add some guardian angel lighting on you and your guys and on your safety cones, especially good for rainy dreary and bad weather. I also see the need that fire departments be utilized with their emergency lights flashing for at least a half mile or more starting off the shoulder and then stage the next emergency vehicle half lane out and finally a full lane out that establishes a safe zone for rescue and tow operations. Once you moved your roll back up to load that truck the only alert people had was the trooper car and with all those LED flashing lights on a rainy night it can create confusion. Who knows if the first car that impacted the trooper car was distracted or confused but had that trooper car not been there, your 50 ton wrecker would have been the one she hit and at the speed she was driving it would have been bad. People need to slow down and move over and pay attention when operating a vehicle. I am so grateful no one was injured or killed. You guys have a dangerous job.
