In the U.S. the problem got so bad that the Fair Trade Commission issued a rule requiring all airlines to prominently display all fees on their website... Which led to my first sale as a comedy writer:

An idea for a video. The phenomenon, especially prevalent in the UK, of being able to fly domestically for less money than a quicker train journey. The example that comes to mind is the guy who got famous because he flew regularly from somewhere in northern England to watch Chelsea in London via Barcelona because it was cheaper to do that than take the train.

Ooh Simon, I love that you covered this because it was especially prevalent with COVID. At just about the end of March 2020 I was looking to climb Mount Saint Helens with my childhood friend, the flight from San Diego International to SeaTac (Seattle) was only $45! Of course, taxes and fees would bring it up to $70 or so, but HOLY COW was that cheap. Of course, it never happened since they cancelled our hiking pass two weeks before I was going to go and the opportunity was outweighed by the risk. I'm also under the impression that it's mostly a ploy to get you to book their flights. Some sites will go as far as not telling you what time your flights are until after you pay the price, afterward it's non-refundable, the biggest scam in airline history behind the Spruce Goose (or RyanAir, dealers choice.)

In 1988, I managed to get a flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Lhasa, Tibet round trip, with a 15 day stay. It also included the "hotel" for the 1st night upon arrival and the last night before departure. It also included food and drink on the flight, as well a shuttle service to and from the "hotel".
It cost a total of 115 Deutsch Mark, around 80euro today(I am guessing).
It's not exactly one pound, but it is a really cheap ticket to go that far around the world.
Plus, I have a photo of myself with a Chinese border guard on one side and a Tibetan monk on the other. Not very many people have experienced that.

Topic suggestion: quilting as a business. When I tell people I’m a professional Quilter, they typically say sadly “oh, that’s a lost art.” Well they are so wrong. It is a multibillion dollar industry internationally and certainly millions of dollars in the United States. My quilting machine alone Cost $36,000 and to make a quilt takes around $300 in fabric and up to $1500 worth of labor, so it’s certainly not a lost art, but a huge business. The International Quilt Festival held in Houston, Texas, in the fall brings in around 250,000 participants to visit hundreds of quilts and over 1000 vendors. Surprising? A business blaze indeed.

Ryanair and Easyjet have many more additional fees than they did back in the late 90s. Also, the airport tax was considerably less then. Those two airlines used to have a £0.01 advert for Galsow to London (plus tax). While the "plus tax" means that the flight isn't actually £0.01, it was still very cheap. My parents frequently few this route and the taxi to and from the airport would be more expensive than the flight. They still do take advantage of these airlines. My father books 3 to 4 months in advance, they pay with debit card to avoid the credit card fee, they have only a small carry on bag, they print their own boarding pass, they check-in online, and they read the small print every time to make sure nothing has changed since the last time.
In 2000 and 2001, there was a last-minute package deal site that had an auction system. You could bid for last-minute deals, often leaving within 24 hours, with the auction starting a £1. While most auctions closed at a considerably higher price, occasionally there would be a ticket that didn't sell. Typically they'd be short notice with an unknown hotel. My father, then recently retired, would sit refreshing the page right up to the close time, then bid. He did once get a package for two to Tenerife for a week for £1 including tax, hotel and transfers. On the same site, I got a week for 2 in Cyprus for £100, inc hotel and transfers.
Now I live in China, I still sometimes get cheap deals. My wife and daughter went to Hong Kong on a 5-day package deal for 100 RMB (£10) each inc flights, tax, 4-star hotel, all meals, Disney entry, and transport with the one condition that you spend 2000RMB or more shopping. Even if I'd paid for the flights myself, just the flights would have cost double the shopping condition without counting the hotels, food, transport, or tickets. So my wife bought me a nice watch.

I live in the US, but I was living in London in 2001. I was there for 9/11, and if you recall, the weeks immediately after, everyone in Europe and America were waiting for follow-up attacks. People were genuinely frightened to fly. I can't recall if it was Ryanair or EasyJet, but both were doing absolutely ridiculous specials trying to get people flying again. The internet was advanced enough by then that we were getting comfortable with booking online. There were a bunch of two quid flights offered round trip to a bunch of destinations. There were only a handful of these seats and you had to jump on the offers as they posted. I missed out on London to Barcelona and London to Tunisia as they disappeared almost the moment they popped up. I did get two pound tickets from London to Glasgow and London to Genoa Italy. These were truly two pounds round trip! It cost way more just to get to the airports than the actual flights. This was of course, an unusual time to be flying, and the specials didn't last long.

My cheapest flight ever was 12 euro's, Dusseldorf to Londen and return.
It wasn't great for legspace, but it was a short flight so didn't mind it too much, also flights were during night.

I've flown a bit in my life and me and the wife got a hold of a really nice deal: To and from Tokyo, and hotel for two weeks; $1600 for two! Usually those tickets go for that each. We stayed at a 3 star hotel (star-ratings are fluid and change depending on what country you're in. In Japan that 3 star is more like a swedish 4 star hotel (Free internet, good bed, assortment of pillows, concierge service etc)) and flew with Lufthansa where food is included in the ticket.
FAR from the 1 buck but still a good price as the taxes made up half of the cost.

Back when I was in college, I could fly stand-by from New York City to Chicago for something like $25. They didn't guarantee you could get the flight you wanted but I was never bumped in the years I flew that way. I think there were restrictions who could fly stand-by (students, military). Flying stand-by in the US was cheap but there weren't as many (domestic) airlines back then. I think the military can still fly stand-by now but probably not anyone else, haven't looked into it for many many years.

When Ryanair was entering Polish market, they sold loads of flights for less than £1. In late 2008 they had a promotion with flights for 2.50 in a currency of your outbound flight. We used with my family. And then it was cheaper to get a return flight Wroclaw-Frankfurt-Wroclaw for 5PLN, than a one way Frankfurt-Wroclaw for €2.5. They were a thing. And we didn't pay any extra charges. Haven't seen such god deals since, though.
And the trip we did then was Gdansk-Frankfurt-Porto for 2.5PLN+€2.5.

Here in NZ, we can pick up $1 flights one way at least 3-4 times a year, domestic only of cause. There is a credit card charge and luggage option, but if you pay by airpoints which are in $ value then no extra charges. You also can often get a return flight for the $1 as well. So yeah totally available. That would be a 3 pound flight roughly, or a USD$2 roughly.

Fun fact, airline food will always taste bad because it turns out that air pressure has an effect on how stuff tastes and cabin pressure, while not equal to exterior pressure, is generally around the same pressure as if you were somewhere between 5000-8000ft above sea level to reduce stress on the hull. There have been cases of airlines hiring famous gourmet chefs to design custom menus (for 1st class i assume) which tasted great on the ground but kind of off in flight.

I recall flying a few years ago for $35 NY to FL (Round Trip). While just 1 flight was that price a dozen more round trips were $45-$60. There was tax 8%. You couldn’t check a bag as 1 bag was $50 on its own. As a comparison most similar flights were $350. The only downside was the days and times of the flights which were a little odd.

I flew to Norway in the 90's for £1 + taxes with Norwegian and £1 + taxes back, yes i had to pay for baggage but from what i remember it was about £40 total, good seats and free bottles of water to Oslo from Stansted. I fell asleep on the way back and they put the water bottle by the side of me as opposed to just passing me by. I had never flown before and i have to admit the excitement possibly made it better but I still rate them as the nicest flght with the nicest airline I have ever had so far.

I've never had a £1 flight but my brother, a friend and I did take a day trip to Paris in 2009 and the single flight from Leeds Bradford to Paris CDG with Jet2 was £6 for all three of us!
It was the best flight I've ever had, there were more cabin crew than passengers! Granted the flight was at about 4am but as we were all college students it was great.
We then did a single back home with Eurostar which was rather less successful. That cost about 10 times as much each and after a power failure in the channel tunnel we eventually got home 14 hours late!

For some reason, Ryan Air is (or was) more expensive in the UK compared to the rest of Europe. I was stationed in Germany between '04-'08, and purchased many 1 euro tickets around the continent. Yes there was a tax and fees, but one time it was only another 10 euro. They were one-way, but you could get a one-way for return as well. Since I could go on vacation anytime, I could plan my vacation around ticket prices since they are different everyday for some reason. Now if I wanted to fly to the UK, it was outrageous. My friends wife was from Norwich, and they would drive and take the Chunnel because it was cheaper. In fact, I never flew to the UK while in Germany because tickets would cost more than tickets and lodging some place else (Italy, Greece, etc). Fortunately, I ended up getting stationed in England after a 5 year detour back to the US. The worst part of it all is that I was fortunate enough to experience life outside of the US, and now fully aware of how awful the states are in comparison. Keep living the dream Simon, you entertaining nomad.

Cebu Pacific in the Philippines have done flight tickets for PHP1 in the past, which is about 2 cents US! By the time you add the fees and charges, they are way more than PHP1, but still very low prices. Of course, you have to be quick to get the few seats they offer at that price.

I've done a few 1€ flight's with ryanair. i'm from belgium and to promote the Charleroi airport the Walloon gouvernement would reward airlines for each seat sold, so for a time it would make sence for ryanair to sell the seat for 1€ if they had seats left.
a little time later they where not allowed to do that, so they came up with a even better deal, if you bought a flight, you could get that flight again 2 weeks later. this way me and a friend got a return flight from Charleroi to Barcelona for free.
The best deal i did was in 2006 when i had to organize the company day trip, with a budget of 50€ per person (we are a theater with 20 employees) and i was able to get 20 flights leaving in the morning to Milan, and returning in the evening for 22€/pp all taxes included.

I haven't been on a $1 flight, but I have been able to get the $9 a day car rental. When I fly home to Detroit, the car rental is the super low price that is advertised "As Low As..." and the cars are brand new: I got one that had 150 miles on the odometer the last time I went, and payed something like $13 a day for unlimited milage, and the car was loaded! It even had a sun roof. I assume this is some kind of deal with the auto manufacturers. I put almost 2K on a brand new car next to nothing.
