Absolutely phenomenal lesson….the way you teach and explain the notes scales and chords and how they relate to each other and how you got about mentally thinking about these things is exactly what we all need to learn…and you do it at the perfect speed so you keep the lesson moving forward without bogging down and over explaining anything…I would honestly say this is the best lesson I’ve seen taught about country style guitar I’d ever seen
Love this type of old school country guitar as opposed to the modern country 'shredders'who exhaust the ears after 30 secs. Beautiful tasteful playing . Great lesson, thank you. 👍
To keep it interesting though it does help to change speeds in the middle of phrasings, it's all about how you make your patchwork solos with memorized licks sprinkled in, and eventually you will be gliding over all the place with muscle memory riffs as you find out what works where, and when, especially playing through chord changes and accentuating the 5ths,7ths, root notes, and it just helps you become a better improv player.
I agree. All far too fast today, modern country and bluegrass leave me exhausted and in search of melody. Looking forward I end up looking further back.
PS another comment --- My personal Number One Telecaster country guitar album of all time for anyone who hasn't heard it. "Corn Pickin' and Slick Slidin'" by James Burton and Ralph Mooney. This is the Holy Grail of "chicken pickin'" and pedal steel guitar for me!
As an old guy coming back to the guitar from many years away (what was I thinking??) this has been quite difficult for me. But I have a suitable partscaster and I dug this the minute I heard it so why not. Almost have it all the way through committed to memory. Now to get up to tempo and get the phrasing down. Thanks Alex for a super lesson!
Alex has the talent to entertain during a lesson, not just mere theoretical stuff. And has the talent to keep you " glued" to the topic because he masters it. Real tasty chops here! I'm loving your lessons! Keep it up
Your explanation is obviously extremely well thought out but way beyond me.however im taking in as much as i can and loving your playing and phrases.thanks
Thanks Darren, I appreciate the comment. 🙏🏻 As you keep progressing in your playing journey, I guarantee that multiple revisits of this lesson will bring rewards and mark milestones in your understanding and playing. 👍🏻
Thank you Dennis my good friend!.. absolutely right.. outlining the changes isn’t something exclusive to jazz playing.. all good, melodic lead lines should outline the changes, no matter the genre 👌🏻🍻
What a wonderful way to begin my Saturday morning! Before my coffee was even finished dripping, I'd already plugged my Strat (I don't own a Telecaster!) into my Deluxe Reverb, added a touch of light overdrive and slapback echo (courtesy of the Electro Harmonix Hot Wax & Echo pedals) and tuned up my guitar in anticipation of playing along with your video!!! I'm convinced, Alex, that in addition to Louis's little comfy furry Igloo, you actually have your own full-sized Igloo...only yours is modded to be a Time Machine, which you use to journey back through the past, playing on thousands of sessions which span musical history!!! 🤣 You really are the consummate Session Player...Jazz, Country, Rock...there is no style you haven't mastered!!! You won't be able to convince me otherwise that it's ACTUALLY YOU playing on all of my favorite records!!!! 🤣. I'm totally stealing that reverse rake Danny Gatton pedal steel lick btw!!! So tasty!!! Your Tele sounds AMAZING here!!! It has a lovely transparent, almost acoustic tone...it almost sounds double-tracked, with one mic on the amp and the other on the guitar unplugged!!! "I'm making a B-line for the major third here" LOL!!!!! 😂 If this whole guitar thing doesn't work out, you can always fall back on your immense Stand Up Comedy talents!!!!!!! 🤣. What an absolutely wonderful lesson and video!!!! Thank you so very much, Alex!!!!!
Oh man, thank you so much my friend! I love reading your comments and this was my favourite so far! I would LOVE a time travelling igloo.. if you could just sort that out for me, that’d be great 👍🏻😂 Glad you liked the tele tone too, the acoustic quality you describe is exactly what I love about super low wind pickups.. they really let the natural voice of the instrument shine through. Really glad you enjoyed playing along with this lesson buddy. And again, I really do appreciate the kind words. Thank you 🙏🏻🧡
I discovered this channel completely by scrolling accident. "Sleepwalk" was the most tasteful thing I had heard taught (I knew the melody but thought the Ventures had written it). Now this twangy country is what I grew up with (native and resident Texan) before rock and it's so fun to learn more. I have 2 tele's. Your teaching makes me so aware of my limitations, knowing what notes make up each key, and knowing where each note on the neck is. Hope I have the memory for it, it makes a big difference.
Thank you Paul, I really appreciate the kind words my friend! So glad you’ve enjoyed the videos!.. and yeah buddy, for sure your awareness of the notes and intervals etc will undoubtedly improve the more you work on it 👌🏻
I’ve watched about a dozen of your videos since discovering your channel about a week ago, and I have to say this is my hands-down favorite. Please do more in this style, and thanks so much for everything you do!
Excellent video, Alex. Love the variety in your choice of music. You have really nailed that classic Telecaster country guitar sound! My favorite players go back to the era of Don Rich with Buck Owens, James Burton with Ralph Mooney, and Clarence White on the Byrds "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" album who introduced the sound of the B-Bender. Currently Marty Stuart owns and plays White's original B-Bender, and Marty and his sideman Kenny Vaughan are two of the best playing today. Playing this style of guitar and "getting it right" is not easy, as virtuosos like James Burton and Albert Lee demonstrate.
Thanks so much Joe, I really appreciate the kind words. We have very similar tastes in country pickers too!.. my “recommended listening” portion of this video basically is that same list of names! 🤪 Nice to see a fellow vintage country fan 👌🏻🍻
this is great! I love how you explain where the notes are coming from within the chord and scale. Too often I find myself just learning something without giving it the thought I should to see where it is so I can replicate it somewhere else. Chef's kiss!
Thank you for mentioning the Louvin Brothers. I think they're an amazingly underrated country group who made so much beautiful music! I really enjoyed your lesson.
Brilliant! So much great content on your UA-cam channel, and the context always so well explained so you can use elsewhere!! I can't keep up… I'm still working on the Wes Montgomery piece 2 Saturday's ago. Thanks Alex, massively appreciated
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video 🙏🏻 All the theory can be intimidating but just tackle one little concept at a time and it’ll all make sense. Music is a language and can be learned like one also 👍🏻
Instantly useable phrases. And your explanations of how the notes and licks relate to the key center helps me integrate into my playing. Your vids are terrific.
Thanks mate, I appreciate the kind words. Not sure what you means about the TABS though.. they are VERY easily available!.. there are two ways to get hold of them.. both links are clearly in the description 👍🏻 (Even my backing track is included with the TABS!)
Thank you! New subscriber! Love diversity of your channel! Lessons like this and the blues and jazz ones are sorely missing imho on YT! Love your gear, Tele is gorgeous! And dig your heritage style clothes as well! ✌🏽❤️
Absolutely classic riffs! In the intro demonstration, did you have the guitar's tone control wide open? I find that a more pleasing, classic Tele bridge pickup country lead sound can be achieved by backing off the tone control (about 90 degrees in the case on my red Tele). I disconnected the neck pickup from the tone control, as I prefer that one wide open.
The deluxe is having some work done.. been through a difficult spell recently but will be back to full fitness any day now. In the meantime, the Imperial Mk2 has been great! 👌🏻
Lovely sound on that amp. Makes me feel like I'm strolling past a music hall in Nashville. I've bought a Tele player recently but swapped the noiseless bridge pickup (which is essentially a stacked humbucker in spirit) to a 50's Broadcaster seymour duncan. Sounds great through my line 6 Helix fender amps. But open to any suggestions from anyone here on any Tele Country amp sims?? To test 👍❓
Thanks buddy, glad you dig the tone! Good question re: amp sims.. not a world I’ve delved particularly deep into aside from using some Scuffman and Universal audio amp plugins for the odd session in the past. 🤷🏻♂️
Great Video, Alex! As usual. I especially like the short stab ending. However, I cannot play it the way Alex does. The first two are no problem, but I always have to stop and think how to arrange my fingers for the final E with the bend up to the 3rd. Anyone else have this mental blockage as well? I find it more intuitive and my my hand lands easier when I use my first 3 fingers on the top 3 strings at the 11th, 12th and 12th and then use my index finger to bend up to the major 3rd. I am also playing 9s, so that may be why it works for me. just curious. cheers!
Thanks buddy, glad you enjoyed the lesson. There are a few good reasons I would recommend persevering with the orthodox way of fingering that last bend.. but.. if it’s absolutely impossible and you see no way it’ll improve with daily, methodical practice, then there’s no harm in adapting it and using your alternate fingering. All depends how far you want to take this stuff as there are many licks born out of that one bend that require it to be played with the original fingering. 👍🏻
Thank you buddy, that really means a lot! 🙏🏻 I will add a "fundamentals of chicken pickin' lesson" to my to-do list for sure.. great idea. Thanks man 🍻
That's just simply outstanding playing Alex, I mean I know nothing but what I hear and 'see' is sort of like writing and itss speed or tempo speaks to phrasing and these little groupings or chunks that seem to fall into place like a puzzle comes together. Like I said Alex I know nothing but Idk why but it just falls together somehow for me. I'm going on the hunt for more chords with the accompanying notes almost call and response sort of stuff. Anyway I'll shut up and quit proving that I know nothing, (Just like the philosopher said all those years ago).
Thank you mate, I really appreciate your kind and enthusiastic words! You don’t have to qualify anything you say, just speak honestly and don’t worry about that stuff! 🙏🏻🧡
nice demo of the standard country motifs. quick question: does your '52 tele have the stock bridge pickup in it? i love the tone of it. what year is your model? thanks
Thanks so much matey, glad you enjoyed it! The bridge pickup in here is now the one in my upcoming signature set from Sunbear pickups; Alnico V magnet, 8k wind. Amazing sounding thing! 👌🏻 This guitar is a masterbilt from 2018

Thanks for the lesson. I have a question regarding amp sounds. I just purchased Amplitube 5 and got the Fender Collection 1 along with it during a sale. I'm wondering what the recommended Amp would be for this kind of sound. I DO have a telecaster. But what do people usually use amp wise for this style? thanks
I don’t have any hands on experience with that setup, but I’m certain it’ll have some kind of “Black panel Fender” style setting.. twin reverb, deluxe reverb or the like would be ideal 👌🏻
