Nick has always love Mopar and muscle cars from the 60's and 70's.. but today he is welcoming back a 1949 Oldsmobile hot rod project to the shop. This one is cool!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
My father had a 1949 Olds with the Hydra-Matic transmission which he bought new. They were hard to get at that time with long waiting lists. He was moved to the front of the list by the dealership because he was a wounded veteran who was unable to use a clutch pedal due to his injury. He appreciated the dealers consideration and bought new Olds from them for years afterwards.
Thanks for sharing a very cool memory. ❤️
Wow that's a great story. The Old's dealers back then cared a !
That's a really special story. My dad served during World War 2. He was in the south pacific. Thanks for sharing 👍
That dealer is the bee's knees
@@ronaldhellengreen7063 The dealership was owned by two Jewish men. They understood the importance of the fight against the NAZIs and appreciated the costs to our young soldiers. My father was wounded in November of 1944 on the day after his 19th birthday. His best friend was KIA nearby in the Vosges two days later. My father said he was just doing his job. The Oldsmobile dealer was not always able to offer my father a great deal, but would usually tell him when to return when they expected to be able to offer a better deal. When my father was doing a lot of traveling for his job, he bought a new Oldsmobile every two years.
Can't wait for the "No Header" T shirts!😂😂
73 years old and still a beautiful girl, sweet sweeping lines, like sweepers on the highway of life, your a lucky man , glad you made it back from that dark road to this sunny day, 🌞,
A 350 Olds Rocket engine would be my preferred choice for this project. The one I had would pass just about anything but a gas station. It had a Turbo 350 automatic transmission behind it and would launch my Cutless to 65 mph locked in low gear. I once put four tenths of a mile on the odometer in less than a hundred yards. It concealed a country store in tire smoke for a few minutes and the store keeper said his smoke detectors didn't quit screaming for over half an hour. He asked me to not do that again and I was buying new tires for the rear end a few days later.
Nick, my friend that I have not met yet. Remember when you were in highschool and dreamed of having a car with headers?❤. When you built your first car with headers and thought it was the fastest to car on the planet.
Wow! Old footage from before I started watching of the Dyno test of that little 283!
I love the engine paint color! 🐸
Hi George!
Right on. We dipped into the way-back bin for this one.
Everything about that car says "Take me for a drive!" I love an old school hot rod. It should provide many hours of enjoyment and turn some heads at the car shows. Nick will have it sorted out in no time 😉.
I can tell you all about that hood latch....caught one to the back of the skull no less than 20 times, but you will learn eventually when backing out from under the hood remember that latch! My wife’s x-step dad gave her a ‘49 Olds when she was 15 and her mother had drag raced it in west Texas when my wife was a toddler. The car had been sitting for many years and being the boyfriend I got to do a tremendous amount of work to the car to get it road worthy and fix a lot of issues as they popped up one by one. It had the original engine but bored out to some where around 303 cubic inches and had a two barrel carb on it. That car would smoke the tires and would fly on the top end. I had a ‘65 Fastback with a 289 & 750 Holley carb geared 4.56 and the Olds would outrun it. I was a muscle car guy and didn’t think much of it, but my dad and his friends said it was the fastest car on the rode in it’s day and the first car that would outrun it was a ‘57 Chevy with a powerpac 283. I outran everything around town with it and blew the doors off a 455 Olds from red light to red light. The 455 guy told me well this 455 doesn’t run good until it’s on the hiway. I said funny, neither does this, let’s go.....we went out on interstate 10 and took off from about 50 mph....by the time I hit 100 mph I was 20 car lengths ahead of him and I stayed in it to about 120 mph....I looked back and the dude took an exit an went back to town embarrassed in front of his buddies. That transmission had 4 forward gears and low was really low and high was like an overdrive. Had lots of fun with my wife in that car when we were teenagers! Brings back memories...Thanks!
Good evening, everybody!!!!!! Firstly, thankful to God that Rick pulled through Covid!!!!!!! That’s one COOL ride he’s got there, especially with the adjustable air ride suspension: so THAT’S what was under the car cover on last Friday’s live, which I only saw the last 5 minutes of!!!! Gotta watch that, I’m SLIPPING lol. I’m sure though, once Nick irons out all the little wrinkles, this old Olds will be cruising and perusing the Montreal streets. Great week to you guys!!!!
i entirely understand Nick's frustration with those crappy headers! i personally love the look of manifolds or those ram horns.
I absolutely love Rick's 49! When I was a kid in the early 70s there was a local gear head that was an OLDS fanatic. He built a 49 that had a blown 455 in it. It was on the cover of HOT ROD magazine int the middle 70s. It was black with flames. It was a WICKED car that made me an OLDS fan. My first really cool car was a 1970 442. I bought it in 73. Can't wait to see more of yours. Hey Nick, you just made my day by featuring Rick's 49, THANKS Nick!
George,Melissa, your cracking me up! 🤣 header rant countdown!
Finishing night shift in A&E. Adelaide Australia. Now to settle back and watch Dr Nick resuscitate old muscle.
Thanks for jining us, Steve. Glad you could be here.
Well done with getting that '49 bagged Olds sorted. I am more of a W30 442 person if its Oldsmobile, but the car is well done. Your knowledge is a treasure for us all 👍.
Right on.
Always enjoy your show Nick.... I love the Oldsmobile, it looks so cool... I'm old enough to remember these cars still on the road when I was growing up in the early 60's
They sure don't make them like that anymore..
Awesome 51 Olds!! Father had a 51,,then a 55,,then a 58. He loved Oldsmobiles ;)
Nicks head was about to explode when he saw those headers. LOL!!!!
It was not a good week for headers in the shop.
@@NicksGarage I know from many previous videos. They're always causing him problems one way or another.
Cool car but I’m with Nick with the lowering stuff. It’s not hard to tell what Nick thinks about that. That’s true about headers. Headers add a little horsepower and sound good, but they don’t always fit right. Tell it like it is Nick !
THE AIR BAGS ARE FOR TEENAGERS! NOT A GUY HIS AGE.
@@TOBYH Air bags are good for some things but not for a classic car. I don’t like the low rider look. It’s extra weight and a waste of time and money.
You do it all in Nick’s Garage! Many places would have no idea what to do with a carburetor, oil bath air cleaner, screen oil filter, and the rest. If I ever get up to Montreal I will stop in, drop off a box of Tim Horton’s Java and donuts for the crew, and be on my way. All the best from central Virginia!
Thanks. We'll be happy to meet you.
Nick , you got the life man . Love your shop . I always love seeing the old classics and Muscle Cars coming and going from your shop . You take care Nick ,George, Manny ,Melissa, and Krew .
@@MelissaNunya Hey Melissa, Thank-you for the kind words and taking the time to say . I'm working on a nice quiet week and weekend...I hope .smile. You take care, be safe ,and have a good week and weekend too !!!!!!!! Always good hearing from you .
I learned how to drive on 1940s cars. My favorite one was the Olds Rocket 88. It felt like a jet compared to the Chevs, KFs and Fords back then. BTW, I am over 80 now. And that Olds belonged to my maternal grandmother!!
My first car was a 1951 Oldsmobile Rocket '88'. This video sure brings back memories!
Hi Nick And George, That is an awesome 49 Olds. I just love the shape of the postwar cars, they had such elegant body that were true automotive art. A very cool car at Nick's Garage.
Glad you enjoyed it, sir. We agree about the shape of these cars. It's great to see one finding a new life.
I'm old enough(born 1950) to remember these cars on the road where I lived in Chicago.
What a UA-cam Channel Nick Has. There's a little more in the way of MoPars than anything else, but there's a little bit of everything else, and from one week to the next we get a variety all the time. We don't know what's coming up next week but we know it could be anything. This 1949 Olds is about as good as it gets, and as Nick says, "its so simple of a car."
Dang look how young you were Nick! Old DYNO flashbacks! Great job!
Time flies!
Hello Nick, Rick, Manny & George, what an awesome ride that Old's is going to be once Nick you work your magic and yeah you were right to tell it the way you see it with headers. Mail time was way cool this time too. Till next time stay well and safe all.
Thanks 👍
I agree with Nick on the headers
The hood catch needs an upgrade! someone grab a tennis ball with a hole in, at least it would be less pointy. Great car she is going to look great finished. 2x👍
Love those turtle shell fast backs from the past! Late 40s to early 50s!
Hey Nick,George, Manny, and Krew , That is really cool 😎 seeing the 1949 Oldsmobile!!!! I like what he has done with it and it is going to be a really nice ride one it's all finished. Love seeing the X frame underneath, now that's going back aways . George, great content and angles as always. My Grandmother in Law would Only Drive Oldsmobile....she was a Delta 88 Gal ...God Bless her .
Great Monday, cool old Oldsmobile 😎.
That’s Nick’s Garage next T-shirt design: headers with a red slash through them, lol. No Headers! 😂🤣
Great rant on the headers LMAO
I built my first bagged truck when I was 15 and I have continuously owned bagged vehicles ever since. If you want to own and drive lowered vehicles air is the only way for the vehicle to be practical.
Chevy Ram Horn manifolds will give it a classy look without the troubles of thin wall long tube headers.
The 49 olds is beautiful. The 95 -99 Chevrolet Z24 Cavalier is in great shape.
A nice flashy colored tennis ball on the hood latch will save chunks missing from your scalp. I call it a "Head-Saver". Got one for the Barracuda for safety at the cruise-ins. There's always someone sticking their head under the hood when it's open. That Olds will be a cool ride when it's done and you've given it the finishing touches. Thanks again for all the great videos. Regards - Mike
Thanks for the tip!
great gearhead energy............thanks Nick...........luv the fan mail and gifts...........awesome following........today ,, tomorrow ,,and memory forever....................
Back in the day we used to convert those can oil filters to spin on. More motors got wrecked from leaking oil filters than uou can shake a stick at.
That's one badass 1949 Olds
THAT OLDs would be nice with a olds 403 engine
If I was Nick's customer I would want to hear his rants because I know I would be getting the truth.
I ran headers on SBC, SBF, Ford 460's for years without one problem.......no loosening, no burn spark plug wires, zero interference with steering box, etc. Of course, I took the time to route the wires away from the headers, only bought headers with a thick plate where they bolted to the head, used locking header bolts, etc. I had a set on a '76 1/2 ton Ford van that I ran for the 23 years that I had the vehicle and only retorqued the bolts once(when they were new and had about 200 miles on them), and they never leaked, burned out, interfered with any other component, etc in all that time. I sold the van about ten years ago and ran into the fella that bought the van about 10 years ago and he said that he never has had a bit of problem with them. The headers were cheap Patriot headers made in Mexico and were not ceramic coated. I used multi-layered manifold gaskets. I've heard horror stories about headers but have never experienced a problem. I used the Ford van as a daily driver for much of that time and towed a big, heavy camper a lot of the time I had it. Several times, pulling the camper in the Rockies I would stop just because I thought the engine needed a rest (it didn't) and the headers were cherry-red for 6-8 inches out of the head.....NO PROBLEMS. I've heard your diatribe several times concerning headers but it does not support my experience.
I never miss your program if I can and I've learned tons of things from you and thanks. I have the original exhaust manifolds for the 460 and they hold the garaged doors open on windy days.
If you have never had any issues with headers, you are one of the fortunate very few. No matter what brand they are 99.995% of headers at some point will have issues with the most common being leaking followed by problems with firmest. To have gone as long as yours did without so much as a leak is possibly a record for trouble free longevity.
@@todddenio3200 I certainly did not expect it to turn out that way when I put the engines together with headers on them after hearing the horror stories. One thing that helped was that the cars had more long trips than short and that kept the exhaust dry and didn't give it a chance to rust out. Our ranch was 30 miles from town and that probably helped to a large degree.
Poor Canada, and their long hiatus
What’s up, Nick and crew!? Hope y’all are doing well.. tell Vascili the other bow-tie guy says hey..
Howdy!
I would have used a 324 cubic inch Oldsmobile engine in this rig, not a Chevy even though I am a lifetime small block Chevy lover/addict. I hope he gets it finished soon and brings it back for a show and tell.
There's a Rocket motor for sale on Ebay for $650. It's just a core but the original hot rod V8 in the original true hot rod is priceless. Ross Racing Engines has everything Rocket 88 motor. Over 400hp if you want to.
Every episode is fantastic, hasn't been a bad one yet😎. Keep up the great content guys. Time for a poutine✌️
Nick, I can't wait to see you guy's at Carlisle next month. Just look for the old short guy with a blue Nick's Garage T-Shirt!!! HA ! I gotta get a picture of me, you and your beautiful Kowalski Challenger! Bill from Linglestown, Pennsylvania
Loved the Olds what a sweet hot rod
You sure don't see them every day.
That's a pretty cool custom.
VERY COOL 😎 Bet he won't see another one like it at the car show!👍👍
What a cool ride, that colour and those wheels, it’s a badass ride. Thanks for showing us this one, won’t see many of these around.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Best wishes Rick, hope all is well now...
lol, that hood latch...i had flashbacks getting gouged in back of head by hood latches similar to that, lol
you guys should put together a compilation video of just dyno runs, just the final runs, showing hp and torque, that would be a great video
Great show as usual keep bringing in these great hot rods this what the older guys like nick I had 3 Olds 49. 51. 53 the 51 I put a 365 Cadillac it was a runner it had Olds 3 speed stick with spring loaded shifter one of first around thanks nick l.d.k.
Swooped back end reminds me of Henry J. I love when someone takes a different unusual car.
Nick,if i'm not mistaken, that piece of the rear suspension you ask about at 22:19 was called "knee action" shock absorbers.Just before the widespread use of tube type shocks. (a little before my time)
My father had one of these he called it the Torpedo. It was an automatic he loved that car, the transmission when south and he traded the car to a used car dealer for a bright red 57 Olds Rocket 88.
Giasou Nikola,
Just quickly letting you know the 2nd package arrived & thank you for all the little extra's especially the 440 valves.
Headers are doing your head in. Nice little hottie I can see the potential in it, long way to go but looks good.
Besides all that winter here in Melbourne but nothing like your winters that is a whole different winter.
Take care ola kala.
Your number 1 Fan in Australia
Louis Kats from Melbourne Australia ☺ 👍 ❤
Really neat hot rod... However, the first thing I would do is toss that I burn with any back fire Air cleaner into the trash and get a different one..
Nice ride. Love the lines of that car. Hi Nick, George and Manny!
LOL The header rant. They really are a pain in the ass.
Nick,
Thank you for bringing us along on this one - a very interesting and cool car!
BTW that hand made Challenger key FOB from Greece was outstanding!
Paul (in MA)
Glad you enjoyed it!
The rear of the car reminds me a little of the Henry J hotrod I used to love as a kid
I have a 51 Chevy fastback so I can relate to that body style for sure.
What a great episode,,,, ✌️
Evenin Mr Nick!! Have a Great Week!!
Thanks! You too!
Gotta love a good hot rot!!
1949, the year I was born…I need some new parts too! lol
That is a Cool Looking Olds! Great show guys.
Nick saying he hates headers is like Joan Crawford saying no wire hangers ha ha 🤣
Looks like an old gasser,I like it cause it's different.
wasn't the Olds Rocket 88 create the 1st big performance V-8 that started the life of Muscle Cars before the Pontiac GTO. Also I do like that Rockabilly music playing when you unload the car in the shop.
The 49 Olds and Cadillac v8s we're impressive. The 51 Chrysler 331 made more power than the Cadillac v8s.
Maybe it's time for fenderwell headers you know how that is I love that car I had 350 Oldsmobile is at the same time wish I had him now and one car garage full NOS parts but I'm old now and I can't do it have a great day thanks for doing this keeps me inspired
Nick you were right. My subscription had turned off on me. So I reset it and I am back on with you.
The air ride is cool. It would also look great as a gasser. Cool car man
That's my first car......mine was a 394 ci 4 speed Hydramatic. She had BIG 4 hole AFB. I bought her in California in 1969 while I was in the Marines. She was run over by a dump truck that lost it's brakes 11 years later. I feel really bad when ever I think of her.
Looks like that Olds was the inspiration for the 63 Barracuda
Awesome video Nick, love the Oldsmobile! Awesome gifts from your viewers, especially the custom made key chain from Greece! So nice!
Back in early 50s dad bought 49 fastback that had factory air I think.
It had clear tubes on each side in back package tray pointed towards front, didn’t work tho by time we got it
Rocket 88
I was old enough to remember
Later in 63 was in LA , Olds v8s we’re the deal, bored to over 400 inches, Isky cam 3 duces, those were the daz
Wow another great video. This show is better than the Cable channels. Nick and George great work. This Olds will be a great project to follow. 👍 I will share like always. 👍
Thanks, Joe! ❤️
Dr. Nick, I remember that video when the Bride of Frankenstein was made 5 years ago, how time fly's, should be a cool ride, cheers.
Right! Got to seize the day.
Nick, try ceramic short header with reusable blow out proof gaskets and the special bolts that don't back off.
The old Olds needs a bigger fan and a fan shroud. Maybe just put an electric fan in it.
You are correct. Needs more air.
a little dimple in the header tube will never hurt performance.
please share with the owner two important hotrodder rules. use a large fan with a shroud (not a flex fan).
those air filters are notorious for catching fire and causing lots of damage. one back fire and poof. nice car
Thanks, I will tell him.
I remember watching one video on headers. The engine was hooked to a Dyno. The more dents they put in the header pipes, the more power it made. They were attempting to prove damaged pipes lose power, but the opposite was true.
Had one, always loved the little clock in the center top of the dash. Mine got a 1955 324 punched out with triple carbs! And of course the dual range hydro magic.
Very cool!
Thanks for sharing 👍😀
I see its got a fire starter air filter they should be cleaned every 2k best to throw it in trash can to be safe as they have a foam rubber filter. I had just bought a 40 ford that had been sitting for 5 yrs and was trying to get it started when it backfired out the carburetor which had one of those cheap foam filters luckily had an old blanket near by and smother the carburetor foam filter Fire out.
Thanks for the tip.
They can also melt from the fumes and get little pieces down into your engine
I had a '53 Olds convertible and later a '60 Olds Super 88 2dr...My Dad had a '46 Olds and a '50 Olds, My' brother has a '51 Olds and a '56 Olds Holiday....
Big thumbs-up 👍
Thanks Sony. Back at ya! 👍
Hi Nick I enjoyed the video of the OLDS ... The shifter is cool ... Nick your show ROCKS my wife likes your show alot too... Say HI to everyone for me and my wife... Thanks for sharing the mailtime also Nick... Take care Nick Have some HOT TEA AND HONEY 🍯 BUDDY... I see No charger 500 yet back at the MUCLE SHOP Nick.... FROM THE BANDIT
Thanks Bandit and mrs Bandit. We are so fortunate to have such kind and loyal viewers.
A fan is not needed when driving along only at idle an stopping at light etc In Goulburn NSW I drove around with no fan in winter in my VG valiant 265 Hemi my brother in law would drive his XY Ford in winter with no fan your car runs quiter an more HP if you live in town you will need a fan My Pacers had a smaller fan the standard Valiants an ran no problem an in those days we always drove a high speed with no heating problem then again we ran on country road The more garbage under the bonnet the more heat issues Air power steer etc look under the bonnet on a 🇦🇺VG Valiant Pacer no garbage an easy to work on 👍🏻🇦🇺☕️
Wow that's got an awesome sound for a 289,
That's been a while by the look of your old dyno system
283 LoL
By the look of nicks hair Morris like
Check out the long hair on Nick in the dyno video
How the years have flown.
Great show! I take it you do not like headers!
I HATE HEADERS! YES I do too! Three vehicles I've worked on included headers and there were all of the issues you gave, plus a few more ( gasket sealing???)
Before I retired I I use to put a split tennis ball on those hood latches
Waow a 49 Oldsmobile with a mean little small block to seal the deal This project didn't go quick because Rick the owner got sick Now he wants to get his car back and Nick's Garage have been charged with getting it back on track She's called the Bride of Frankenstein because Rick gets his parts from the scrappy all the time What Rick wants Rick gets Engineering like that deserves all due respects Rick can sure take pride he's rolling on air ride It's pretty trick and the forties styling is super slick It's back with Nick because now Rick is fully match fit and he's very keen to get on with it There's a problem with the steering the column and the headers ain't clearing There's a little electrical work too Nick's Garage will fix every issue That's why their customers never require a tissue Nick is checking for a leak So he cleans the trouble areas first to make it easier to seek There's also a bumper mail time this week Nick's Garage where the cars are the stars Shout out from London!
That's quite the Oldsmobuble.
Time for header bashing
