DR2's magnetism isn't in the daily challenges or the carreer mode. It's in the personal need to better your stage times and try to beat your own as well as other peoples best times, constantly improving yourself and your driving. Shaving off second after second of a stage, chasing the perfect run.

      @GeneralBitters  Рік тому +14

Based on the feedback like this, I'm realizing that now. Next time I get back into the game I will focus on chasing the perfect run like you suggest. Thank you!

@@GeneralBitters everyone's mileage may vary ofcause. But i think especially with rally games it's more of a chasing times thing than with other racing games, cause time is really the only thing one can compare themselves agains others, player or ai.

I disagree. I only play the online challenges and measure my skill based on the results. I find that more fun than playing one stage over and over again.
Another thing you don't get from chasing better stage times is consistancy. Beeing fast once on a stage you've spent hours and hours on perfecting is one thing, but driving fast for a whole rally season in different driving conditions a whole other.
I fondly remember the Official Dirt Rally Club Championship. Very long seasons, with 40-60 km between services and full damage. I always started off right between the 1st and 2nd third of the leaderboard, then started climbing close to the top.
Of course everyone is free to play the game as one likes, but I feel like that represents the spirit of rally more.

6:54 That is such a genius idea! I would be amazed if the engineers actually say something along the lines of "it looks like you're performing better when you're doing this or that, we suggest to adjust this or that", even more so, if it looks like a briefing/report instead of a simple UI option to select. Hope the devs watch this video!

Yes, it would be pretty cool. I like the idea of a report that gives you suggestions. That way you could still go in and make the adjustments yourself, but at least have an idea about where to start. Thanks for watching!

thats a fair review, apart from one thing I would say. Not sure how much time you have spent in the game yet but in my humble opinion the longer challenges such as the weeklies and monthlies is where it's at. Since it is a rally game it isn't about one stage but getting through the whole thing. Trying to balance speed with consistency (or just survival) and watch how you go up or down the leaderboard over the progress of the event is the best fun for me. That's where the magnetism comes from mostly for me. Also getting involved in some clubs (community championships/rallies) can be awesome fun.
Fun and original review format, cheers!

I appreciate the additional thoughts regarding weeklies and monthlies and agree they are much more engaging than single stage dailies. I too am 16 hours in to Dirt 2.0, with a wheel setup. I just stumbled on a monthly mission by accident. It is very cool. For the first time, I found my self struggling to even finish the event (let alone considering placement). Which is awesome, I love hard games! Driving 25+ back to back tracks with the same car is an awesome idea! Most racing games you play for 10 minutes and then the track is over. You get a brand new sparkly immaculate car and you forget about the last 10 minutes. But in Dirt 2.0 you are 3+ hours into an event with the SAME CAR thinking about how you crashed in the first 10 minutes and how that is affecting your driving right now! It's an incredible achievement.

As you’re a small channel with only a few subscribers I’m going to provide some constructive criticism which I hope you read and take to heart to improve your already impressive video creating abilities.
Firstly, I really enjoyed hearing a human being doing the narration, instead of those absolutely horrible computer generated voice-overs. Congratulations!! And your voice is actually quite pleasant, nice pronunciations, decent enunciation and no real harshness overall (I’m a musician and I hear these sorts of things quite obviously, especially with a singer when we’re playing jazz tunes, so it’s quite obvious when listening to narration also).
With each chapter or section of your vid, you absolutely do not need to say the name of the chapter when it’s on-screen at that time. It’s more than enough that we hear the chapter name said in, generally, the first or second sentence of the chapter. Like with aesthetics and progression, so there’s no need whatsoever to say the chapter name when it’s on-screen and overall sounds a lot better when you don’t.
Speaking of said aesthetics chapter, it was a bit strange when you rated aesthetics as (I think) 2 off maximum in your rating scale but then the very next screenplay you show has this incredibly bland look in whatever car you were driving in said shot. I also think it was pretty generous in 2023 to give such a high score for aesthetics when, especially with a gpu like yours, it can look a whole lot prettier in other games and game styles, but this is all subjective.
The mix was well done, your narration wasn’t too loud or too quiet compared to the gameplay and could be heard well and clearly understood. Something I wanted to mention was that you specifically titled and said in the review that you’re reviewing the game as it stands today, in 2023 but in one chapter, can’t remember which but it was in the first third I think, that some part of the game had improved since it was originally released. Well, that’s a bit strange, given that you’re reviewing the game as it currently plays, not looking at how it’s improved or not over the years. It sounded like you gave it maybe a one mark higher score in that section because of this, as in, being a bit less critical on the game because it’s old, etc.
Two phrases that are said far too often are “in my opinion”, as the ENTIRE review is obviously your opinion, we know that going in, so there is absolutely no reason nor need to say that in the body of the review. Another is “personally, I blah blah”, because again, when someone says something, anything, quite obviously they’re talking about themselves, so why people even say that is beyond me. Personally, I think it’s one of the stupidest mannerisms English speakers have, as it’s not often heard in English speaking people which are people who have English as their first spoken language. You see what I did there, I hope? Right, of course you did? I’m the one writing/saying this, so who the fuck else’s opinion would I be telling you about? Sorry about the language, but it annoys me so much how ridiculously lacking are the vocabulary and ability of most content creators to get their point across without using such methods. I don’t think I’ve ever heard an instance of when the word personally was necessary before the word I. Maybe if someone was describing something from someone else’s point of view, but that rarely happens and if it did, fine. But there’s literally zero need for the word in this context, EVER! You didn’t say it, but I’m just letting you know. Yeah, I know I’m a bit crazy about this but we all are in our own ways, aren’t we? 🤪
Anyway, as I said, I hope you read this and use it to improve your content creation skills and abilities. I enjoyed this video and more importantly, I think you’ve got some decent potential and should keep going with your reviews, perhaps some hardware reviews are in the works (I haven’t checked out your channel content, so not sure if you’ve already done some like that)? Good luck in the future, hope your channel grows.

Hi Aaron. Thank you very much for taking to the time to watch and provide various feedback. I really appreciate it.
I tend to agree with what you said, and think you make some valuable points. The most difficult for me, however, is your first point. You complimented my voice... but this voice is in fact an AI voice. I also hate to hear robotic TTS voices and always immediately turn off any video that uses it. However, I discovered this AI voice that sounds rather natural, and it is much more pleasant and professional sounding than my own. Most people are uncomfortable with their own voices, and I find mine to be less dynamic and monotone. (i.e. boring) Despite this, I have been struggling with a bit of imposter syndrome using an AI voice, and know that if my channel does grow, I would probably need to eventually address the fact that I'm using an AI voice. Thus, I was thinking about switching to my own voice in my next video. But after hearing that someone with your ear is complimentary of the AI voice, I'm no longer convinced. Any thoughts about what you would do in this situation?
Thanks again for your advice. I was also not convinced I should announce the name of each chapter, and will probably eliminate this in the future. I will also keep your other points in mind when preparing future videos.

@@GeneralBitters Hmmm, I’ve always wondered what ppl would do in the situation that their channel becomes popular and for some reason they now need to get in front of the camera but the voice we’ve been hearing for X weeks/months/years/etc isn’t actually their own. I’d say just own it, get over your fears and bite the bullet-use your own voice from now on. I know it’s not easy, imagine trying to do it on stage, in front of a (sometimes not so nice) crowd, but if I could manage to do it, certainly you can too. And you don’t even have to have a crowd in front of you, and trust me, it makes things SO much less nerve wracking.
A wise thing to do, at least until your confidence grows a little is to record your voice-over and ask a friend or family member to give HONEST feedback, tell them to critique it as if they didn’t know you. You must tell them that you won’t get offended by what they say, coz if you don’t make that explicitly clear, VERY few ppl will be 100% honest with you as they won’t want to hurt your feelings. You gotta make it clear to them that they’re helping you and they have to be cruel to be kind, literally. Ok, not cruel, but I’m sure you understand my point.
Make sure you practice your lines at least a few times so you don’t stumble or makes any mistakes during the recording. Another reason is so that you even have some lines to read. Too many ppl will just do their voice-over as they’re watching their edited video, there might be ummms and aahhhs throughout the narration, etc. make sure you read and pronounce words correctly. For example, it annoys me no end when ppl say “pro-now-nsee-ay-shon” instead of “pro-NUN-see-ay-shon”. Yes, there’s a word pronOUnce but the verb and adjective of the word does NOT have an “o” next to the “u”. Anyway, I only speak English, and it appalls me at how incredibly lacking the vast majority of ppl’s language skills have become. Ppl. Just don’t have any vocabulary, can’t express themselves without swearing or using the most basic language possible, have horrible spelling, etc. And it makes an excellent impression on everyone, ppl like myself and everyone else, when a person is well spoken and can actually speak their own language with a modicum of nuance and ability. Wth regard to your fear that your voice is monotonous and boring, again, make sure your friends n fam are giving you 100% honest feedback. Tell them to pay particular attention to your oral expression, to listen if your voice has dynamics and expression or if it’s just monotone and the same the whole way throughout. A very good and also very simple way to overcome this, and I’m being serious, is kids story books. You don’t have to read them to a child, but record yourself reading them and listen back and you’ll immediately hear where and when you should have used more expression and because it’s so obvious with children’s stories, it’s a really easy way to overcome said problem.
Anyway, I hope this helps, even if just a little. And if there’s anything else I can help with just lemme know, more than happy to do so. Oh, and like I said in another comment DO NOT use that moronic way of trying to setup a car by twisting the dials and seeing what happens. I can show you and teach you how to setup a car properly or I can give you a great place to start, just don’t waste your time doing what that other fella said. Consider this, if you don’t know what an adjustment is even supposed to do or feel like, how do you know that the game even implements that adjustment correctly or at all? Some things do VERY little or are a really subtle thing, so if you don’t even know what it’s supposed to feel like, how is judging from a GAME, not even in a real car, supposed to help? Or what is the game overemphasises the adjustment, then you go into another sim and perform the same adjustment but this time it completely screws up your car’s handling. It really not difficult at all to setup a car, one just needs to know what to adjust, in which direction and for what handling problems. It’s not a difficult thing to learn, but no one has EVER done it by making random adjustments to see what they feel like and going from there.
That’s all for now. Best of luck and hit me up if you’ve any questions.
      Cheers,
      Aaron.

I really appreciate you taking the time to offer advice. In particular, the suggestion to use children's books to get a sense of where to add expression is helpful. That's a simple but brilliant idea I'm surprised I've never heard before.
Hoping you and others will stick around despite the voice change. Thanks again!

Dirt Rally 2.0 has some of the best sound design, car models, and gorgeous looking scenery that's available at the moment in terms of Rally games.
The biggest problem is that they shot their progression in the foot. Since you start off the game with one of every car, there is no incentive really to earn money and buy newer cars. We should start the game with maybe 1 car in a categories. And then you can race to earn money to buy new cars and get into other categories. I saw a video of someone that suggested burning all your money on upgrades, selling and rebuying cars until you only had a few left, with a non absurd amount of money. Thing is it looked like a PITA to setup. Spending a bunch of time sinking money, selling and rebuying cars to drain your cash and car reserves.
Also the thing that bothered me is that the jump from clubman to whatever is the next stage. I felt the difficulty spike was really intense. Especially in Rallycross. Going from dominating the qualifiers and for sure getting a podium finish. To not being able to qualify lol.
You had some really good suggestions in your video in regards to perhaps having engineers that suggest certain tunings to help you figure out what settings could benefit your driving style. Since although I can see my skillset greatly improve over the last year or so. I'm still very hesitant to mess with tunings. Even though DR does a good job of explaining what are the benefits/drawbacks of all settings. In some cases I'm not sure how much of the negative aspect of this modification I can live with as opposed to the benefits gained. Which leaves me to think that unless you are super consistent on a track with a specific car. Playing with those settings on the fly makes it near impossible for someone to judge whether or not its helping.
I am a little surprised at the bland magnetism of the game. Depending on what you look for in a rally game, and taking into consideration what is available. It does a decent job IMHO. At least for me since I like to chase world records more so than doing challenges. I can definitely burn an afternoon on it trying to perfect a stage, or my driving.
    Anyway, great video my dude!

You make a really good point about the lack of incentive to get better cars. Wish I had included that in the video. And I'm happy to know I was not alone in experiencing the spike in difficulty after the first championship.
I thought the magnetism is bland since I have not really felt motivated to continue for hours on end. It might be because I know I will never be able to set a world record, but your comment made me reconsider whether I want to focus on time trials for a few stages and see how good I can get once I have them memorized. I'll probably give that a try...

And quality of contracts would be based on previous driving results, better contracts and manufacturers approaches you when you do good.

imo dirt rally's physics are kind of ... difficult to grasp. I actually think most people, even noobs, will have a better time driving in richard burns rally, at least with fwd and awd cars. With rwd cars, driving in dirt rally 2 is so dramatically easy by comparison that I'll grant that it's easier for noobs, but some players in RBR are able to get astonishingly competitive results using RWD cars.
I personally found that driving in the last few WRC games was actually easeir to understand and more realistic. In my eyes, its very hard to go back from RBR's high fidelity handling and stages. I don't exactly see Dirt rally 2 as "arcade," because I think they actually tried to make it hardcore, but it's lacking fidelity. Not being able to customize the pacenotes should be seen as a giant flaw too.

I think you did a good job of saying what I think. Difficult to grasp. I didn't consider what you pointed out about RWD cars in DR2 vs RDR, but I'll pay more attention next time. I've mostly driven FWD and AWD cars in real life, so RWD always feels alien to me. I'll look to RDR for some RWD training.
WRC games were difficult for me to grasp, in general. I feel like the stage designs are better than DR2, the physics feel better a lot of the time, and the progression is more interesting. But then the sound design and puzzling physics like you see at 8:55 really discourage me from playing those titles.

Dirt Rally is like playing an instrument, you'll suck your first week/month expecting a casual experience and not get too far. You'll stop playing the game for a while, and give it another try down the road, only that time you'll start developing and getting better and getting the most out of the game. Dirt Rally is a game that is most enjoyed after putting 20+ hours into it, once you get a hang of the physics and stages you can't put it back down

On carer you can actually enable hardcore damage, and the progression to get to masters from a basic tin can was rewarding and the engineers getting better was a godsend. Really tought me the fundamentals of giving it 80% smooth and steady and being in the end, in most instances faster in the short term and long term.
The dropping of "chase the last tenth" made me a much much better driver, in both time attack and wheel to wheel.
Really good video review though, well done!
I enjoyed the taste rating, it's funny!

How would you like them to auto tune your car? What surface should they predict you want it for? Does now game now need to include an algorithm to learn your specific driving style for that specific car? Because a one size fits all tune isn't probably going to be what you want. I think that is a massive amount of programing bloat for something that is a setting based on personal preferences. I'm sure it could be done, and would be kinda cool I just don't think that juice is really worth the squeeze.
Really don't understand your need for some sort of hallmark campaign story in order for there to be progression. Its racing, skills and times are your progression. Some people just need to be told they're having fun in order to have it.

One thing about this game that might be overlooked by people who don't have a sim rig is the quality of life options for sim gear. Manual H pattern works properly and hugely adds to the emersion. If you dont drive properly with the clutch you stall the car and then have to restart the car again in the middle of a hairpin. It adds a huge extra layer of challenge and reward when you learn to really drive fast with heel toe downshifting, clutch kicks and other old school rally techniques that sadly nobody uses nowadays. All this stuff is in the game and works so nicely but you may never even know that. I just wish there was a way to play with other like minded players. You have no idea whos playing with what. I like wrc generations too but i get less satisfaction out of using modern cars and seq gears. You can H pattern in generations but it feels like ass and doesnt work properly.

Being part of many different leagues you can easily put in 50hrs a week into this game. Wrc Gen I bought on rebate for 30$ and I still feel ripped off. Just setting up the ffb takes hours and still doesn't feel anywhere close to good. The sounds are horrendous and take you right out of the amazing graphics. RBR is just incredible, but the fan base is nuts 😆 don't ever say a bad thing about RBR or your in for a 10 year-long harassment campaign. What the community did with RBR is nothing short of exceptional, but I still find myself going back to DR2 hours on end.

When I looked, I think there were literally tens of thousands of leagues, and most of them had less than five people or so. Agree all. However, there is one major point missing. DR2's support for Force Feedback wheels is lackluster. The input delay is the worst I have ever seen in any driving game, by a lot. I feel disconnected from the car even with one of the best DDs on the market. This issue significantly puts me off. If you are a super serious racer I would suggest playing RBR instead.
I started my sim racing hobby from DR2 and was one of the guys in the top 300s of daily races. Once I upgraded my rig and started playing ACC/AC I suddenly started feeling the delays in DR2 and began finding myself not willing to return to it, even though I'm good at it and can feel a sense of accomplishment when ranking high up on the leaderboard.
Another pretty big issue is pace notes. Being really fast brings out the worst of the DR2 pace notes. It's inconsistent and sometimes plain wrong. It's also at times way too late even with the eariest setting.

    • @GeneralBitters
      @GeneralBitters  Рік тому +1

Thanks for the information about force feedback. I recently tried RBR after hearing so many good things about it. The aesthetics are understandably a weakness in my view (it's nearly 20 years old), but the steering does feel more like a real car. I want to spend more time in the game before forming a final conclusion, but so far I agree with your points. I'll compare with ACC/AC also to see if I notice the delay in DR2.
Regarding the pace notes, it seems to be a common complaint. If they don't allow us to correct them ourselves, in future titles Codemasters should at least include corrections along with other game updates.
