- Another lucky discovery on Google maps. This time we head out in search of a possible Abandoned Reservoir. Not knowing what to expect, we followed some trails and discovered some really beautiful and amazing things along the way. Wondering what we found at the end? Update: we learned that the well and bricks are remains of an old patch town for a colliery called Sunnyside.
Archaeological reconnaissance for the Lackawanna Valley Industrial Highway (identified) located the Dolph Sunnyside Industrial Archaeological Site out Sunnyside Road on Grassy Island Creek. This is the abandoned site of one of the valley’s rare company-owned patch towns with colliery features and the foundations of workers’ houses, sited in a small valley through which flows Grassy Island Creek. The site was occupied between 1884 and 1952.

What a bunch of fucking Morons... An abandoned reservoir??? That's right behind me fucking house if they could of turned their cameras that way instead of the ridge tops. It is still a reservoir and it also one fed the stream trains before they reached the Olyphant train station down the valley. That reservoir still feeds some city water and factories down the valley... Maybe U fellas oughta do some research before posting abandoned videos. Those abandoned spaces videos send and attract all kinds of unwanted 2 legged vermin. U had to have made that video on the weekend when I was away. The previous weekend I had traps opened pulled loose off equipment I own have here on the property. Not saying that was U but.... That is not an abandoned reservoir they just don't take care of it like they used to are supposed to. I assume when the intake pipes clog up again they'll have work crews there for another few weeks.... Sheesh what an uneducated intrusive society we have become..
I was told even as recently as the 1950's 60's there were still a few Irish that made ritual of panning gold in that grass creek and Wakuna creeks. This was ritual the predated the area as to when nobody knows. I read about it on Diner place mat in the early 1990's. Its been said they not only found small amounts of gold but also small gem stones. How true even I don't know. I rode my dirt back to the grass creek just to soak my aching feet in it on hot 100 degree day later laid down in the friggin creek.. Hate to put my sneaks back on to even back to the house.
Jay, the dam used to be much higher. At 50:16 when you pan up to Mike, that is the original height of the dam. It was taken down to the current level around 1993. I spent a lot of time riding my quad down there. The water was probably 80 feet deep at the dam. It was always crystal clear. On a calm day, you could stand on the dam, drop a rock and watch it hit the bottom. The hole with the rusty water is the valve control for the pipe in the dam. When they knocked it down, the lake was completely drained to that pipe level. When you look out at the lake, the water level was up almost to the pine trees on the right side. On a side note... if you keep walking up the trail towards the next reservoir, before you cross the bridge with the feeder creek to Res #2. if you turn right and follow the creek up about 50 to 100 yards. That is the site of a small plane crash that happened in 1991 or 92. The woman flying the plane survived. It was caused by engine failure. She was flying from Honesdale to Factoryville. I was a firefighter and was on scene that day. We went back a week later and looked around. I actually found the ID tag from the plane. I haven't been back there in years, so I'm not sure how much would still be there.

That reservoir still feeds factories down in Factoryville. The MAIN intake pipes jammed up in 1992 & 3 after those terrible cold winters. They never restored the height of the damn because it is behind my house here where I live. But it does still feed the municipal water supply and factories just not like it used to. They are considering restoring shortly. The bids have been constantly rejected as well as a Aux. southern pipe line to Scranton WilkeBarre area. The only working feed pipes left come out in Factoryville R visible when the water levels drop which they haven't recently last 4- 5 years you can actually see the 2 HUGE feed pipes with giant metal slot grills. The other 2 reservoirs in the area they R also slated for reclaimation as they call restoring them. one of the adjacent properties was selected as filtration plant and due to the economy state has constantly been put on hold year after year. There is also a Canadian oil or gas line running smack thru that area outta NY and that is also been an issue as to restoring those reservoirs. I cannot elaborate on the technical details but that particular reservoir fed the PBNE steam railroad during WWI and WWII. The reservoir itself predates most of the surrounding communities to about 1850. There was a small rail station near that particular reservoir and a RR bridge which later handled cars and so forth. There is no road or even a route number. I asked got conflicting stories as to what road it was because it connects with my drive way directly as the RR once went right past my house.
@@thekingsilverado9004 this resevoir is no where near Factoryville. Its on the east side of the valley that runs from Scranton to Carbondale, You got the wrong place.

I also 100% understand why you take your time and hike “safely” because if you get injured you won’t be able to hike at all and after healing from an injury you wouldn’t be able to move around the same. I love when you slow that down with the waterfall going slow it amazes me how clear that water is
Jay the difference between the mountain laurel and rhododendron is in the leaves and also the mountain laurel requires more of a moist soil so they are usually found near water. Brooks, streams, rivers, ponds, underground streams, etc.... rhododendrons will be found under trees in the wilds away from water sources.

The Mountain Laurel has a smaller leaf.
On that last point you have them reversed. Mountain laurel grows all over the mountains around us and most other places I've hiked and hunted. Mtn Laurel (seen around the well at 16:25 min mark of this video) and Rhododendrons resemble each other, as they are related. Rhodies, however, require a lot more water to exist, so are found along water ways. Rhodies are a full bush often growing 16 ft tall with long leaves (5"-8" long). Mt Laurel is more of a shrub with smaller 2"-4" leaves, and seldom more than 4 ft tall. Both are highly toxic to hoomin beans.
they are essentially the same plant one is wild and the other is a Hybridized version , laurel grows wild in my state about anywhere regardless of an obvious water source but the do seems to favor shade

“The Olyphant Nos. 1, 2, and 3 Reservoirs were constructed by the Winton Water Company in the 1890's. These reservoirs are now part of the Theta properties and are no longer in active water supply service. Olyphant No. 2 was breached by PG&W Company in 1994 in compliance with dam safety requirements and in anticipation of the receipt of storm water flows from the then proposed federal prison project.”

Pages 309 to 311 have numerous additional information about historic features along Grassy Island Creek.
There was a stone quarry in the area:
Scranton Tribune, May 6, 1892, reports on a dispute between 2 water companies, one the Olyphant Water Company, to build a dam for a storage reservoir on Grassy Island Creek at a point “about 250 feet north of the bridge crossing Grassy Island Creek at Winton's stone quarry.”

@Caroline Zoe. Thanks for the information my home is directly behind these 3 reservoirs. Since I lived here I have had conflicting information as to what the hell they R gonna do with them. I was told the reservoirs or at least the one behind my home was built cira 1850. I did find remnants of the PBNE Rail Road. In fact my driveway was once part of the rail bed. I know little if anything but when water levels drop U can clearly see 2 very massive intake pipes and their slotted stainless steel covers.... Thanks for the info because I know little if nothing of a PRISON in the area here... I can't find out much but I have seen surveyors from Henkles and McCoy co. back there on several occasions recently. I work alot and gone alot... Not home... The only thing is the area is safe as far as 2 legged vermin... Seeing these 2 boobs I figured out when they were there by looking at my security cam video. They were mostly far away didn't come on the property here but I did recently find someone looked at my equipment I have stored under traps until I get my barn built.
From what I’ve researched there would be small reservoirs built anywhere there would have been steam locomotives and/or steam engines for industry. That stoned lines well was a pretty great example
There was a coal co in the area so there could of been a narrow gauge railroad.
Definitely go back in the summer! Would love to see what's under the water. I wonder if very many people know about this place... it's so pretty there, especially the waterfalls!

I agree that that hole was a valve used to lower the water level when needed. And possibly the height of the spillway was lowered at one time to lower the reservoir water level.

I was glad that you found another, safer route across the stream when you didn't "feel confident". Any one of those rocks could have been unstable. People take risks way too often. It would have been a tough exit with a broken leg from anywhere you went on this trek. Always better safe... Thanks for taking us along on this interesting journey.

That warmness you added also works by increasing the contrast, I worked in photographic laboratory and although we "knew best" i discovered we don't, Customers saw differently, Most don't understand or care that clouds are white and grey, Many were blind to cyan and blue but warmed to magenta and red as you did, Unfortunately many didnt understand exposure and a short exposure in low light was a wash out low contrast and grey

The dam was partly demolished in 1994 due to safety issues. Those structures of brick you found I think where the remains of a coal town called Sunnyside.... Cool video Jay. 👍😉

Rhododendron have much larger leaves than Mountain Laurel. Rhod's will get a cone which will generate a 'ball' of blooms and they keep their leaves all year. Mt Laurel will lose their leaves in fall. They are on much thinner stems, with a lot of direction changes. The flowers are all on separate stems in a large grouping at the top of the leggy stems. The Rhod's are far more bushy. What was shown in the video was Rhododendrons.

The thing that sets you apart from other "abandoned places" videos for me, is that you stop and look at the amazingness that preDATES whatever abandoned thing you are going to! I live in Idaho. I live a half of a block away from the Boise river. There is a place in Atlanta , Idaho, where the snow runoff is PERFECT clear! If you get to Idaho, please tell me. There are LOTS of abandoned towns here too.

lots of old mines, old mining towns. The forests, the rivers, tons of farms. What really blows my mind, is that we get alot of people moving to Boise, and they don't know any of it exists. Pretty untouched. :) We still have dirt roads all over too, lol. Talk about finding things to appreciate about home.... Thanks for that.

6 minutes in. It's a vulture or buzzard. You can tell because their wings go up into a V shape when they soar. Hawks and other falcons will hold their wings in a flat line, level with their body when soaring.

That place brings back grate memories of an old B&O railroad dam me and a couple of friends use to go swimming, we called it the healing waters because it was so cold. Those were best times of my life. Thanks for sharing!

Hey mate, just want to advise next time hopping into an old well make sure its safe, i have rescued 3 times explorers falling to their deaths or even badly injured. Some wells looks like its filled in but may not, years of trees falling into the well and dirt,stones and natural debrees fill up makong it appeared safe, your mate stepped into it, and foolishly stamped on the ground, did you ever think what you stading on is just a natural plug that could give away any moment? Last thing you need is to rescue a friend and call us firefighters to res ue him. Best theory is grab a few of those big stones and just throw it down in the well hard, anyhow nice videos just be smart because the last thing we need is a casulty, just thought i shared because i cared, safety first, keep the good work up...Peace
Roland Gauthier yup, and a warning to everyone take care out in the woods of the PNW, lots of old homesteads with old pioneer wells completely hidden by years of debris, same size around and vary in depth. One found on Joint Base Lewis McChord at 80 feet deep was completely invisible on the surface and was found when a friend almost fell in! With a fluctuating water table each day changing from near the surface down 20 feet over night if you survive the fall you may not even get out. So fricken scary, please stay on trail and never hike alone.
When he jumped in the well did anyone notice the thud sound it made...and the creaky sound also OMG!
These wells have to be properly decommissioned with special concrete and care given not to contaminate the water table for those who use the water from their own wells.
That big rock I could lay a towel on and just lay there and close my eyes and just listen to the water. It sounds so peace full

JP, this has got to be my most favourite video of yours! Beautiful countryside, beautiful stream, and beautiful waterfall (even tho it's a man made one). I could smell the fresh mountain air, feel the breeze, felt the spray on my face, and I thoroughly enjoyed it all. These are the type of outdoor adventure hikes we used to do in my much younger years. Thx for the wonderful explore. It would be great to see this in summer, but only if you won't get into any trouble revisiting this site. Stay safe everybody.

Good call on the river jump!! I was hiking with a friend and I jumped on, he jumped, slid and went face first into a substantial rock. Ouch!!

That is a old valve that once locked but it seems they just removed the wheel or knob from the valve instead. I bet it's for releasing overflow water or something like that. That is a awesome place
It's easy in the UK to tell the difference between rhododendron and mountain laurel, Rhododendron, as beautiful as it is, grows and everywhere and won't allow anything else to grow, with it. The mountain laurel on the other hand will grog with anything, but not anywhere.
In the Northern part of Louisiana there was a town at one time before they flooded it and turned it into a reservoir. Now the town’s structures, gravesites, churches, peoples homes and stores and schools and really tall trees are all under the reservoir and it’s called Toledo Bend Reservoir.
Are they visible from underwater?
Everyone in my office agrees on one thing, we wanna see you get in the next hole you find. R.J. and Mike have done the last 2, lol

That hole with the water was definitely the valve to the pipe. It was likely enclosed within a wooden house structure and had a wheel to turn and open the valve on that little metal pipe in the hole. They tended to call them wheelhouses or valve houses.

Jay that rocky area is a rock cap installed in a mine reclamation project to cover over the red ash culm pile. The rock structures along the top are "Bat Hotels"

Man you gyes are so much courage to cross those rocks over water. You know those rocks can move. Yes I am surprised of a well that would be that big, very dangerous. Should be filled or a metal cap over it. Dangerous for wild animals.JP they are all georgous areas, I can't believe the beauty that PA has.Boy you have to be careful. There's a very similar dam here in SW Pa that's part of Laurel Hill State Park. It was built by the CCC camp back in the 1930's as part of the governments help to unemployed workers to provide income. Many of the dams & projects they built are a part of a state or national park. Google CCC camps Depression Era & read up on it. The CCC stood for Civilian Conservation Corp. The dam I'm speaking of was built from cut stone that was mined from the mountainside there at the dam. In my younger days, it was a great way to cool off on a hot summer day.
I am glad you climbed up to see how much taller it used to be you can see the Cut of the Land how much deeper it used to be.

Great video with Mike. looks like a great spot to swim in the summer. My dad and mom took us to the Swatare Creek and we would swim there. We also swam in the filled in strip holes. Not the safest thing to do. The water was Crystal clear . There is a airport off 81 at the Minersville exit. There are large bodies of water back there. It is beautiful there. Lots of old abandoned construction stuff. I think there is a water shed there now. Not sure if you can get back there now. I'll have to ask my cousins who live in the area. Thanks for another wish I was there video.
