Seriously I'm not too into restoring HW cars and haven't been into HWs since my cars got stolen from a locker a few years back but it's so interesting and entertaining to hear someone be so into restoring an refurbishing old cars. I wish I had my old cars still...
They all came up really nice but it's especially great to see the pink bug after the previous paint vids and see the full lustre of the finished work. Thanks again for a fantastic video
Your videos are really interesting. Debating having a go myself. I'm not a collector, but seems like something I'd enjoy and find quite satisfying. Might be slightly more tricky in the uk getting the paints and what not, well, maybe not trickier, more expensive.
Very nice and thanks for the buffing wheel link. I'm going to try this technique on my older cars....I don't mind the nicks and chips, I just want a shine to the original paint.
Would hand polishing with the same compound give similar results without the risk of removing paint on the raised surfaces? I’m interested in trying this on some spectraflame redlines of my own that I do not wish to remove the paint from due to them being in great condition.
OK, I've got two things to say. One, this is a fantastic video, certainly on par with your best... or all of your vids because they all rock. Two, it's too short. I'm thinking your next video should be 2 hrs... no, make that 10 hours long. That way I can listen all day at work. ;) Thanks for the great vid.
Do you have any tips for the wheels? Cleaning them, bringing the chrome back out or the red stripes where they’ve faded a little l or gotten dirty? Or how can you tell if the chrome/stripes have faded or if they’re just dirty?
Do you charge at all to redo cars? I have a 57 T-Bird with rubber tires I was considering sending you. 2 of the 4 rims are cracked and the paint is OK.
It looked like it buffed out some of the bubbling or spots out of the paint.. or is that just how it looks on my screen? Did it help remove some of the bubbling and spots from the paint? Or what about minor scratches? Which I know it won’t do anything for scratches or chips that goes all the way down to the metal, but does it smooth surface scratches pretty good?
Hi! Could this method be used to remove orange peel texture? I'm not restoring model cars but repainting airsoft replicas. I used cheap automotive spray paints (acrylic based) and even with 2 thin coats I get orange peel. I even tried applying 1 layer of thin primer and 1 layer of the spray paint. I am however using a mirror chrome and gold effect spray paint. Also for some reason even after days of drying, the paint still feels tacky/sticky and fingerprints imprint on it. I applied no clear coat as it removes the shine effect on these 2 paints.
Do not use polishing compound on any Hot Wheels that have that have writing or flames. It will rip it right off luckily I found out polishing a Hot Wheels crack up from the '80s
Idk... But like an old coin, is it better to leave it as it is? I've always wondered about that. Should I remove the old stickers that are falling off or leave them be? Because with a coin, they tell you that you shouldn't clean them.
claygar310 definitely better to leave the cars alone. This is a fun modding project like repainting or swapping the wheels; but on valuable Hw, obviously leave it.
the market for hotwheels and matchbox can be a bit different, as some of the cars are worth more in a refurbished condition rather than in a rusty and unusable condition, the important parts of the car are usually the body panels and plastic parts, and frankly the only cars worth money are these old Redlines, early matchbox cars, and treasure hunt cars
Another cool informative video. Thanks. On a totally unrelated subject...where can I find and buy real rider tires, etc. I have found some cars in otherwise fantastic condition at flea markets that are missing one or more rubber tires. Any suggestions?
I have that Matchbox Jeep Gladiator, but the paint is really bad, has a sticker on it, and there is marker on the seats so I plan on taking it apart and restoring it.
cool track car it twin that set is the Shelby turbine redline a foot set that has the j-cars hatch intact the pins usely broke if lifted up to high according the olé shelb was around a thousand dollars so you've got quite a gem there say need a turbine car?
Recently at a ice cream shop, they had a bunch of old hotwheels redlines, so I picked one out for free, it has all its wheels, the back axle is bent, and someone painted over the damn thing, anyway you could fix it for me baremetal?
Thanks for sharing.........Not to bash Turtle Wax........but there are better waxes, cleaners and polishes out there. Meguiar's entry level is good not to mention that their professional line which can be found off the shelf. You can even find better online.
Your amazing. Can you please restore 1969 Hot Wheels Redline Chapparal 2G. There low market value, but your work on this custom would be amazing. It's so blah. I believe you could add the right details of the 2G.
Im a new hot wheels collector and I wanted to know does it take away the value if you restore a redline or increase the value? Thanks for reading my comment.
You just made my case! People, get and keep your REAL cars detailed! (What you just did is what I do for a living.--- I detail cars and antique /exotic cars🙂).
You're not really polishing the paint with that Dremel unless it's spinning at 6500 rpm. That's what you need to get up to in order to melt the top couple of microns of paint on a car. Not too sure about a toy car but should be the same. And you just have to get the feel for it so you don't remove paint or burn it.
If it were me I'd cut that buffing wheel way down to just a tiny strip so I could get up against and down into all the tiny little creases and design elements.
Do you have any tips for the wheels? Cleaning them, bringing the chrome back out or the red stripes where they’ve faded a little l or gotten dirty? Or how can you tell if the chrome/stripes have faded or if they’re just dirty?

That plastic screen is a good idea LOL
The polishing makes it look much better!
Thanks Mark!!

This is great... Thank you for keeping that wonderful original paint instead of stripping it.
when I watch your videos I will try to buy the same car and restore it the exact same way you do
Now I know that this toy car is a Ford Mark 4.

I would check ebay... I have been able to buy large "lots" of wheels for customs there.
Hey, i found a sidekick mattel car in a old toy chest in my home. Google said it may be worth something but do you know anything about it?
I have that Matchbox Jeep Gladiator, but the paint is really bad, has a sticker on it, and there is marker on the seats so I plan on taking it apart and restoring it.
Besta muito Besta

If you get a beat up car for a few bucks the restoration will add value...

How do you send him a car?
Red Sharpie will blend in with the red spectraflame.
BaremetalHW I have a redline that I could send you. I am not sure what kind of car it is. Also it is missing a piece
That is pretty God Damn Fucking Bad Ass!!!
Can you try not with a car but a motorcycle?
Nice,,i have the same Jeep but in much better shape
Ah yes; it's best to keep all Hot Wheels toy cars, in mint condition.
how much would it cost for you to make a custom 2012 Chevy camaro as a commission?
I bet you won’t pin this
first

I guess it would be like trying to polish your car with a buffing wheel the width of a semi truck. LOL
early
you should consider polishing by hand, you rubbed the paint off of every sharp edge on these
don't think that's ANYTHING like the original color, why would you change the original color
No colors were changed... The cars were just polished.. dirt and grime on the surface was removed to get to clean paint.
