We always try to be honest, both positive and negative! I have no desire to rip a game apart, and I hope we manage to say what we like and don’t like in a way that make you understand if you’d might like it or not! Thank you for watching :D
i like this game quite a bit and am pretty excited to bust out some of the bigger expansions. ive already tried a few of the smaller modules and appreciate the added variety. really liked your review guys thank you again!
Have you played with the modules? Play the base game with all of them and after that switch to the Ancestors expansion and then from then on you can play the other two expansions either with the base deck or the ancestors deck. We like our animal deck combined according to the rules. For everyone who only has the base game: Ancestors is a must!
I also thought it was a bit too easy to Accomplish everything but in the end you are still trying to get more points than your opponent so there is that as an excitement factor. I think ancestors is a must have for variability.
This game reminds me of Revive in some ways. The map part for example seems like a more interesting version since you gain resources several times throughout the game and it involves area control. What would you say makes you like Revive so much more than this game?
Hmm, hard to answer quickly! I hope that if you go back and watch the Revive review, you’ll see many of the things we liked more. Revive feels smoother, plays quicker compared to depth, have great multi use card mechanisms +++ Like them both, but Revive is better for me in every aspect :)
So the question is.... Would you want to play this game again if it didn't have many expansions from KS? I feel perhaps this is the new trend. Games aren't "complete" feeling at retail version so we need to throw the kitchen sink so plays are required to sample it all. Nothing against this game in particular just a trend in the market. Thanks for the review. Hope to try it soon.
I've played the base game twice and just got ahold of the ancients expansion. I think the base game has plenty of replay in it for most people. The only thing that doesn't change every game is the tribe member cards, so that could get a bit stale. However, I find that the game as a whole is very interesting, even if individual parts of it may not be. I am also a sucker for good production value and this particular color palette so that may be informing my decision as well. With just the ancients expansion (alternate animal deck, chieftans and tribe members) I think this game is set for a long time. I don't feel the need to pick up any of the other expansions.
@@elqord.1118 I understand. I watched the whole video and I suppose my question was meant in the more generic sense. Like are retail games being hindered by these "complete sets" only to possibly be better complete games. Just thoughts.
I would say «no» as a general statement for me. We seldom play expansions, even when included in KS campaigns, as we usually want to review the base game. I like this base game, but I am also not sad that there is extra content I can add. When that is said, this also has more expansions than I will ever need. I am one of the weird ones who can go for a base game pledge of a KS. Most of the time, I don’t need/get to play with any of the extra stuff! Hope this answers your question!
glad to see finally someone putting it where it belongs. it's a good game for certain type of players. casual players who like Lost Ruins of Arnak will like this, because of the estetics, art, components, easy and unpunishing gameplay etc...
I feel the animal set collection is broken. The two times i played it the person who focused on that won and the other were sweating blood to catch up.
I got quite a few sets, but they do stop themself from scoring too much, as you can only score for each animal once. I was bad at a lot of the other things, while Sunniva built up a lot, and then went for the animals the last round! :)
I felt the exact same way after playing someone else's copy, so I bought it and expansions. The expansions make the game actively worse, so don't give your hopes up. They are awful, I sold the whole product immediately. By end of round 3, I had built every monolith already, and every single player at the table reached the top of both tracks by game end. The new animals and new culture cards make the game even easier to do everything and it's a shame.
Oof, rare misassessment, in my opinion. The decision space around the deckbuilding is incredibly critical. You could say something like, "It doesn't matter what I add to my deck" about so many games (even Arnak), but it's foolish to think you'll do just as well no matter what. I've also played tons of four-player learning games (including some that you guys like) that take three hours the first time. If you take anywhere near that length again, that's a player problem at that point :) A LOT of games that you guys like will give points for everything you do, as well, so not sure why you would count the "point salad" nature as a negative here...what were your scores the first couple of games? It isn't about "maxing out" everything, it's about doing it faster and more efficiently...kind of how a lot of games you like are? Anyway, I hope you ended up trying the expansions and liking it a little more, at least!
I like the game, just didn’t love it. I do not mind point salads at all (as you say, I love many, many of them), but I usually don’t like games where I feel like I get to «do everything», and that was my feeling here. I might be wrong, but that was the feeling I was sitting with. I have the same feeling with f.ex Amerigo. The game is good, but the last round feels meaningless, as you are done with everything you want to. And yeah, all gamed are slower the first time, but we also spent around 90 min on our 2p games, which felt too long for what I felt I got back. Again, my feelings when playing :) When it comes to Sunniva’s though of «everything is good», I can only answer for myself. I had some plans for what I wanted cards for later, but I got to buy quite a few card during the game, and most of the time I would buy the ones I needed now and for the next eclipse phase. I could write more, but I hope some of this makes sense :) We don’t have to agree, and that is completely fine, hehe :) Happy that you take time to watch and share your opinions! Hope to love this more in the future, for now, I just like it :)
@Board Gaming Ramblings Of course! Love your channel! And I'm definitely not criticizing your opinions. It's totally fine to like it however much you want! You're definitely not wrong to not like games that let you do everything if that's your preference! And if you didn't feel like 90 minutes was worth it, that's fine too! The thing to keep in mind is that this game isn't designed like the games that pigeon hole you to stick to a couple of paths (i.e., "not" doing everything); those games mostly play themselves a lot more, whereas this one puts the onus on the player to "crunch" their own assessments. It's totally fine to prefer one over the other. It just doesn't seem accurate to think that decisions don't matter, and it doesn't seem fair to criticize a game for not requiring you to play it more than once to get a taste of everything. Scoring a game lower because it lets you do some of everything - instead of assessing it as the type of game it is - doesn't feel right, that's all... but hey, that's a minor complaint. Overall, you guys are great, and I love channel. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for all the feedback! It’s very interesting to read views from the other side, of the same mechanisms! Thank you for taking time! Also glad you still like the channel, even though we disagreed on this one, hehe! :)
Everyone’s like I totally agree this game is lame. Boooo. Glad I bought it or else I would have missed out on a great game. Didn’t agree at all but to each their own.
Played my friend's copy. He sold it straight away. Terrible game. Too many steps for a simple game. The 2 tracks are the worst tracks I've seen of any game. Empty as hell...
LOVE the honesty here. Always a channel I can trust whose opinions aren't based on hype or who falls into line because of what the community thinks.

They literally answer this in the review. Good enough to want to check out expansions but likely won’t hit the table without expansions

Hi, have you tried the expansion since this video?
We sadly haven’t had the chance yet!
Did You try it with expansions? Would love to hear if it changes the score.

@@BoardGamingRamblings a lot of demand here for You to try them out :) Especially Rivers and Rafts.

I read that people said that, so I tried focusing heavily on it, and lost horribly 😅
