@@adrenalinex4 Well what's wrong with that? If someone gets an interest in checking out a characters home franchise thanks to Smash then I see that as a win since it gets more people into more games. Hero in Smash got me to finally check out Dragon Quest and I'm really liking that series so far (I always knew it was massive in Japan but I tended to always gravitate more towards Final Fantasy), and I also played quite a bit of KoF 98 and such before Terry came to Smash and got into it.
The character designs and proportions in this game where based on their source game designs this time. That's why Athena looks more loli and has fatter thighs like she did in Psycho Soldier. Ralf and Clark are buff as hell based on their appearances in Ikari Warriors especially the third game. Even Terry seems to be based on his Real Bout proportions.
King Of Fighters XIII is one of the most UNDERRATED and UNDER APPRECIATED games of all times. marvelous gameplay One of the most beautiful art style, design and graphics ever amazing music and voice acting Everything is perfect in this game minus one thing...NETCODE
The gameplay on high level is actually pretty bad. The guy who gets the first hit usually wins the match due to how long the combos are. XIV has better gameplay than this and 98 and 02 are still the best ones
The trials needed work. The difficulty spike is like the math homework asking you how long it would take to walk to the moon when all you learned to do was count to 5
Thank you for pointing out the VO. My biggest problem with XIV after the facelift they gave it is the VO. They replaced so many of the voice actors including Kyo, which I’m pretty sure was the same actor for all of the games till XIV.
The grading scale is inconsistent as Max has claimed in the past, but from what can be ascertained, it's not based on the school grade scale. Everything within the 4/5/6 scale ranges from "Ehh/Pretty okay/Kinda neat"
Me, being a huge Kyo fan, I will never not crack at least a small smile at just how fucking badass EX Kyo's NeoMax super in this game. The build up, the impact, the flames engulfing the screen and of course his scream!

Honestly with snk’s name being pretty household these days being in 3 of the most popular fighting games I feel all they need to do is look at games like this and 98um and just go “hey here’s some of our best hits; now with online on modern consoles”
One problem was... Well KOF XII. It was basically KOF XIII but unfinished and it got some people pissed. Which is perfectly understandable. You just bought a game that looked amazing just to realize you have to buy it again later to have the same but better ?
Underrated? Are you new to KoF Its literally in the top 3 best KoF games and to many people it's the best KoF game out there yeah it doesnt get SF level exposure but literally neither does any other fighting game series
Holy shit dude, I think KOF XIII's sprite work is legit one of the best I've ever seen in any game ever. SNK has always been a master of sprites and this game is hardcore proof of it. I think Ralf's Super also lacks a final impact like Raiden's. Still pretty dope, though. Also, props for giving Athena an honest rating despite not liking her sprite in this game much. I think she looks pretty cool, personally.
Ralf super is aliteral reference to One Piece in one piece thatiscalled jet gatling in KOFXIII the super is called Jet Vulcan that is why is that way, the final impact is only there for those that understand the reference
Raiden's NM clearly is a joke. He just punches you so hard you spin in the air. If you want Raiden's hype super than check his throw super. Also, his REAL actual best super is charged kick, which requires you to hold kick button for half an hour, but then it kicks opponent so hard he flies from the side of you monitor.
Hey doesn't that Ralf's Super Animation remind you guys of Luffy Gear 2nd Gattling Gun vibe?? Graphics in this game still brings chill down my spine. KOF 13's artwork, animation, timing, anticipation, the number of frames used, the amazing roster of characters, the stages, etc. Also the animated background with animated audience in the stages made it feel realistic and homely feel to it. It is without a doubt a Legendary classic 2D Fighter. All of these cool attributes combined together makes KOF XIII a solid fighting game and also one of the best and coolest 2D Fighter of its Era in the early 2010s.
If we consider NEST chronicle lore.... _Y E S,_ if we consider KOF XIII lore (because in one of the dialogue, Benimaru or Daimon comments on him wearing the old jacket back).... _VERY MUCH Y E S_ (in KOF 03, Ash stolen Chizuru’s mirror, in XI, he nearly got killed [for the third time], Yagami’s jewels got stolen and he is hospitalized.... which explains why he uses his weaker classic style in XIII)
You're absolutely right and it's one of my biggest complaints with KOF XIV, I can understand that it doesn't look so good because KOF XIII sprites are stupidly expensive and we don't want SNK to go bankrupt again, but I can't forgive that most of supers in KOF XIV have no impact.
@@ameernurhaqeem9738 But the vast majority are inferior compared to those of KOF XIII, especially that of Kula, which in KOF XIII is my favorite but in KOF XIV it's garbage... I don't understand why they chose that version for KOF All Stars.
He means it's limited to a static camera angle, so it's impossible to embellish it with any camera effects except zoom-ins. Cinematic camera movement is a gigantic advantage in 3D games. What they did here without that is impressive, but there's nothing here that couldn't also be applied to a 3D game, whereas the reverse isn't true.
I believe the reason was because of her Moe Anime design but I honestly loved that Athena Design and it’s based off her old game Psycho Soldier same with Kensuo even tho it’s my least favorite Kensuo design
It's a nice lore/story detail in 13 and 14 that see she harnesses her powers in her ex supers. The KoF14 manga adaptation give her a big snake tattoo that shows on her chest when she uses her Orochi powers.
Lucas Durval I think the op was talking about the super where K’ slaps the shit outta you with his glasses and stops time just to get them outta the air , then beats the shit outta you.

Max may despise Athena, but he gave her the respect that her super deserves especially considering that SNK considered her Neomax to be one of the harder supers to animate. And for that, I forgive him. Now if only he did Kensou's command grab super...
The fun thing about Kensou's "redesign" it's it's actually a REGRESSION. In Psycho Soldiers, the game he debuts in with Athena as a "Psycho Soldier" that was his original look..you can actually see this with the SNK Archives version of the game on Swtich.
@@blaze6477 I believe Athena's look is the same as she had in that game as well so for them it's a closer more HD look at their original looks..and tbh I liked Leona's look..Ralf and Clark...eh..not so much..too much muscle made them look roided out, other than that I could have lived with it.
@@andrako748 Just looked up a pic, and yeah her sailor fuku is a navy blue the whole way, they even made her hair pinker for 13 when it's been a pretty regular purple color in pretty much every other KOF game like her 1st appearance in Athena. One of her alternate colors you can choose is pretty much her Psycho Soldier appearance though...And I looked up a list of SNK games..Athena is the first SNK female pretty much to have any relevance. Athena came out in 1986 and pretty much all the arcade games before that didn't have a human lead except for Fantasy...the only named character though is Cheri, your wife/girlfriend/whatever that you have to save. They were mostly vehicle games like shooting games or racing games..so yeah..no wonder she shows up so much in SNK stuff.

IMO the sprites look better, but the animation in 3S is still better. It's a tie on my book. That said! KoF XIII has more characters and more unique ones at that. 3S had several head swaps, 4 shotos, yun and yang, and gill and urien... it's like 8 characters for the price of 3.
I am crazy late commenting here but eh, whatever. 7_7 Not gonna lie, I'm not really feeling well at the time of this message. I don't quite know if Max will do the Arcade Mode of this game, but whether or not he will, I'll post my heavily scrambled facts of KOF XIII here... Yeah, I didn't really put much effort here, but facts are facts at least~ Here is King of Fighters XIII~ This is the final game in the "Tales of Ash" Saga. Unlike the NESTS Saga, this Saga did away with the established gameplay style for this entry (the Tag-Team mechanic from 2003 and XI) and went back to what people love about KOF. After the beta version- Er, I mean, KOF XII, SNK knew they had to deliever the goods with the next entry and they sure did. An interesting plot point about the final chapter of the "Ash Saga" is that the invitations to KOF are all sent by "R"! Sound familiar? "R" was Rugal back in '94 and '95! But it is not "Rugal" who sent these invitations but his daughter, Rose Bernstein... who is actually under the control of Those from the Past! Oh noooo! (This detail is seen in Adelheid's ending in KOF XI, fyi) - Would you believe that KOF XII actually had an English Dub? There seemed to be plans of an English Dub for this game as well, but they were scrapped. Similarly to Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, it seems the reception for the Dub's voices weren't very well received anyhow. - This game has an IOS version. Interesting, right~? - This game has a "Story Mode"... Sorta like the story modes in BlazBlue and Persona 4 Arena + Ultimax... However I know VERY little about the story mode, honestly. All I know is there's a possibility to have a "Bad Ending" and Shion appears in the final chapters, having escaped Magaki's Dimensional Rift apparently. - Following the events of this game, this created a timeline where... This Saga never happened? I think it never happened following KOF XIV's events, but thanks to Ash's temporal actions, it HAS created Verse and thus caused the return of many deceased characters like Rugal, Krizalid, Igniz, and even Orochi (though he's not a threat due to the lack of a host body)... Oh and Ash is back despite supposedly being erased from time itself following this game's events. Looks like he screwed up big time. (Dammit Ash! XD) - The sprites in KOF XII and KOF XIII took a VERY LONG TIME TO MAKE. They were first 3D Models turned into 2D sprites. Such a process is very similar to how BlazBlue handles their sprites. This wasn't a cheap game to make, at all. - The sprite quality came at a cost. Some characters planned for this game were unable to make it like Geese Howard and ESPECIALLY Adelheid. Geese's remixed theme song is still in the game, however. Adelheid is a big disappointment since he's not only the "second main protagonist" after Ash in this Saga but he has incredible plot significance in this game due to his sister, Rose, being under the control of Those from the Past (He is in the background of the Sky Noah stage at least). - Interestingly enough, concept art for the sprites in KOF XII shown that the original outfits of Ralf, Clark, Leona, and Elisabeth were intended for the sprites but were changed. Athena also looked MUCH different than she does in KOF XII and XIII. She looks rather "chibi like" which is to simulate her original appearance in Psycho Soldier, but the concept art shown that she looked "normal". In fact, one of the posters for XII not only showed the "normal" Athena but Leona in her original outfit. - Ralf and Clark look eerily similar in this game... though they are sort of calling back to their original look in Ikari Warriors. - Just like Athena, Sie Kensou's appearance is a callback to his look in Psycho Soldier. Even though this look does not come back in KOF XIV, his fighting stance is the same as from this game. - King's outfit is a callback to her look from Art of Fighting 1 and 2... Except you can cleaaarly tell that King is a girl unlike last time. lol - It's been a long time, but the original Woman Fighter's Team from KOF '94 has returned! (Mai, King, Yuri) Same goes for the Fatal Fury Team (Terry, Andy, Joe), the Art of Fighting Team (Ryo, Robert, Takuma), the Japan Team (Kyo, Benimaru, Daimon) and the Psycho Soldier Team (Athena, Kensou, Chin). - Hwa Jai and Raiden, characters who haven't been playable for a while (Hwa Jai especially) return in this game in order to bring back "unexpected characters". Plotwise, they trick Kim Kaphwan into believing that they are still evil so that they can enter the KOF tournament instead of Chang and Choi. Obviously, Raiden and Hwa Jai have reformed after Fatal Fury 1's events, but they really wanted to show that they still got it as fighters. - There are Console exclusive characters in this game in the form of Billy Kane (the Mid-Boss of Arcade Mode) and Saiki, the faux Final Boss... However you play as Saiki's "normal form" instead of his Final Boss form. Other DLC characters include NESTS Style Kyo, Classic Iori, and (SERIOUS) Mr. Karate. Strangely enough, Saiki and (SERIOUS) Mr. Karate aren't in the IOS version. - Billy Kane has shaved his head and now wears overralls. This is his exact look in Fatal Fury 1. Fittingly enough, playing as Billy, Hwa Jai, and Raiden gets a special ending screen featuring them along with other Fatal Fury 1 bosses~ Neato~! - In Arcade Mode, it is very much possible not being able to fight Saiki and Evil Ash at the end. If your points suck ass, then you'll get a "Bad Ending" showing that Saiki is displeased with his "allies" for helping him. However, he knows he can simply wind back time and does just that. - With Iori's powers missing following KOF XI's events (thanks Ash), he now fights without his flames. His fighting style is actually pretty similar to Freeman's from Garou: MOTW. Geez, KOF characters love stealing the moves of Fatal Fury characters; Vanessa stole Rick Strowd's fighting style and Iori stole Freeman's. I'm kidding, haha. But in all seriousness, unlike Chizuru, who was discourged from fighting following the lost of her powers and injuries, Iori still participates in KOF alongside Mature and Vice who are mysteriously around despite dying by Iori's hands (unintentionally, at least) waaaaay back in KOF '96. - This game has many alternate colors... and a lot of them are cool! One of Raiden's alternate colors is more of a costume change! It gives him his Big Bear look! You can even have Kyo dress up like his high school outfit too! And some of the alternate colors reference various characters from various franchises throughout the world. Kula can sorta look like C.C. from Code Geass and Ryo can look like Ryu and Shin Akuma for example~ - If you switch the music, you can either play older themes from past KOF games or rearrangements of certain songs. For example, Billy's other theme is a remix of Geese's theme (since he was intended to be playable). You'll also hear "Queen" (Elisabeth's Team theme from KOF XI) if you switch the music for Elisabeth, Duo Lon, and Shen Woo. - Some of the game's stages are remixed versions of KOF XII's stages. Others are exclusive to this game. And others are remixed classic stages from past KOF games like the Japan and Psycho Soldier Team's Stage from KOF '96, the Rival Team Stage from KOF '95, the Sky Noah Stage from KOF 2003, the Clock Tower Stage from Fatal Fury 2, and the Temple and Dojo Stage from Art of Fighting 1 and 2 respectively. - There are MULTIPLE character cameos in the Stages~! You can find the likes of Haohmaru from Samurai Shodown, Wanted Posters of Yamazaki, Rugal, Fio from Metal Slug, Wolfgang Krauser and Lilly Kane, and many more~! That's all I got. I'm tiiiired.
@@iqcontent7797 I've heard you and other people say that and I've also heard people say the exact opposite of what you said. The people have spoken. They like reading it. XP

I think it would be an interesting experiment to Rate the Super in KoF games via each character's Final Combo Trial in demo mode. KoF Supers are intentionally short because they're designed to combo one super into another super. All the final KoF Combo Trials end with the biggest super, and usually combo it off a mid-size super.
Well I do hope FTC/Coppa think so too.. They flagged all animation/anime including the offbrands so I think they'd flag all gaming too following that logic.
I don't think the supers in this game are particularly crazy to look at but the sprite work plus the sound design plus just how the combo system in this game feels really adds up.

marvelous gameplay
One of the most beautiful art style, design and graphics ever
amazing music and voice acting
Everything is perfect in this game minus one thing...NETCODE
I agree. The game is just stunning and how you can chain supers is just amazing
The gameplay on high level is actually pretty bad. The guy who gets the first hit usually wins the match due to how long the combos are. XIV has better gameplay than this and 98 and 02 are still the best ones
The trials needed work. The difficulty spike is like the math homework asking you how long it would take to walk to the moon when all you learned to do was count to 5
@@renann3 Fucking Goro Daimon winning over Iori in EVO grand finals is why I like KoF14 over 13 game play wise.
Thank you for pointing out the VO. My biggest problem with XIV after the facelift they gave it is the VO. They replaced so many of the voice actors including Kyo, which I’m pretty sure was the same actor for all of the games till XIV.

I feel KOF XIII is so unfortunately underrated and I just love when Max revives these games in his channel.
Came out at a bad time if I recall SF4 and MVC3 was dominating the FGC heck if they would have waited for for this generation honeslty believe XIII would have done better
Honestly with snk’s name being pretty household these days being in 3 of the most popular fighting games I feel all they need to do is look at games like this and 98um and just go “hey here’s some of our best hits; now with online on modern consoles”
It's not underrated(always had good reviews and a following) but definitely isn't as popular as it should've been.
One problem was... Well KOF XII. It was basically KOF XIII but unfinished and it got some people pissed.
Which is perfectly understandable. You just bought a game that looked amazing just to realize you have to buy it again later to have the same but better ?
Underrated? Are you new to KoF
Its literally in the top 3 best KoF games and to many people it's the best KoF game out there

@@EstebanBrenesV Thats the First thing I thought of when I played the game years ago.
@@EstebanBrenesV Oh, really? I wasn't aware of that. That makes his Super even cooler in my book!

Yeah, I didn't really put much effort here, but facts are facts at least~
Here is King of Fighters XIII~ This is the final game in the "Tales of Ash" Saga.
Oh noooo! (This detail is seen in Adelheid's ending in KOF XI, fyi)
- Would you believe that KOF XII actually had an English Dub?
XD)
- The sprites in KOF XII and KOF XIII took a VERY LONG TIME TO MAKE.
Except you can cleaaarly tell that King is a girl unlike last time. lol
- It's been a long time, but the original Woman Fighter's Team from KOF '94 has returned!
Kula can sorta look like C.C. from Code Geass and Ryo can look like Ryu and Shin Akuma for example~
- If you switch the music, you can either play older themes from past KOF games or rearrangements of certain songs.

@@SenatorArmstrong2018 but kof xiii is on phone too(albeit under a different name)
THIS GAME IS GORGEOUS
Max just really needs to do a "Rate that walking animation" for KoF XIII and Guilty Gear Rev 2
Max should have used K' Neomax as the last move in a match. The move is so strong, it breaks K' glove in the win pose. Makes it like 10 times cooler.
I'm surprised Max didnt comment that K' and Rock share the same "exhausted" animation after their strongest supers. (Rock's being a winpose)
Athena looks weird!? That's it Max. We're fighting!
All I can say is: Poor Athena.
Does max hate Athena ? She's best girl
She deserves every single hit and more.
^ the duality of man. And I'm on the latter side of the spectrum.
She'll live
I enjoy beating Athena too.

Tonight, I'm gonna have myself a real good time
I feel alive and the world I'll turn it inside out, yeah
And floating around in ecstasy
So don't stop me now,
don't stop me
'Cause I'm having a good time,
having a good time
I'm a shooting star, leaping through the sky
Like a tiger,
defying the laws of gravity!!!!!
