    Have you tried paleo or AIP? What diet worked best for your Hashimoto's?

      I did AIP for about 6 months very strictly but came off due to the mentality I developed around food that was created due to restriction, also it did not make much of a difference in symptoms other than loosing about 10 lbs.

      @@alishapotts6423 Hi Alisha, as I mentioned in my other response, AIP isn't for everyone and there's a lot of nuance to each nutritional approach that we have to manage beyond just food reactivity (calories, macros, fiber, lifestyle, etc.). And yes, we don't want to feel over restricted and when that's the case, it's time to choose a different approach.

    One of my friend has Hashimoto’s and I noticed her for being too picky when it comes to food. Now I understand why she's like that. Thanks for sharing this information regarding Hashimoto’s.

    I have Been on AlP for 6 months and working well for me ,I have begun the reinstating foods hoping to get back a few items (eggs nuts and ghee) I have tried many diets over the years and this will be my life style change permanently I really feel so much better. Its easy and I have no cravings do I miss some things yes definitely but I Substitute with something I can have when I go somewhere I bring something I can have with my friends or family.I have so many options available on hand at mealtime that I can choose. I batch cook multi or egg he's and have various proteins available to make meals easily on the hard days.

    I agree, diet is really essential to treating underlying autoimmune disease. When people go back to the basics of whole foods and avoiding processed foods, it is definitely a great start to getting things back to normal.

      Hi Tinieka, I totally agree with you. There's a lot of conflicting information and can it be hard to know where to start. This is why I recommend starting with a framework that makes sense to you, then using a food journal to track your response and make adjustments as needed.     I had what could only be described as an anaphylactic attack when I was cutting Jalapeño peppers. I suddenly could not breath (no air in and no air out) and I started to get faint, my arms and legs felt numb. I managed to walk out of the kitchen toward my husband who saw me and called 911. He got me to sit down in the front room and suddenly I started to manage air into my lungs. It was scratchy but slowly it got better. By the time 911 showed, I was breathing fine and didn’t want to go to the hospital. The paramedic asked me all sorts of questions. When I told them I was cutting a pepper, one of them said, many people have allergies to those. That’s all I could think was how I’ve made my Mexican dish a million times with these peppers and never had anything like this happen before. As the responders left, I went back to the kitchen to throw away the jalapeño and started having trouble breathing AGAIN! I am 60 years old. I NEVER had this issue before. Can you do an episode on allergies and why we might develop them? Are they there forever then or can we heal and go back to some of those foods. Obviously, I have no intention of cutting any jalapeños, but I wonder about cayenne pepper and other things that might be related. Do I stay away from them as well? I just found your videos and appreciate all your help.

    Thank you so much for this video!! The most frustrating part is that all endocrinologists I've seen so far didn't recommend me any diet changes since my diagnosis! They seem not aware about aip when I ask about it, I also read that supplements like selenium and iodine are so important but at the same time I can't take them without medical prescription. For now I am on synthroid and vitamin D since 8 months, my thyroid blood tests became good, so the Dr. doesn't accept a visit! However all the symptoms are still there.
    I gave up from visiting the Dr. and started aip since one week, it's too hard though, and I am already underweight..

      Hi there! It can be very frustrating that most doctors don't consider dietary options, but I always think that improving our nutrition can be helpful. I think it's awesome that you're looking at and tweaking your diet, but be aware that not everyone with thyroid problems has to be on AIP. It can tend to naturally reduce calories, which isn't always the best if someone is underweight. On the other hand, it's possible that a reduction in inflammation can help to gut to be more efficient at absorption nutrients and actually improve someone's weight. A bit counterintuitive I realize! No matter whether you decide to do AIP or a more generalized Paleo style diet, I would track how you feel. If symptoms aren't improving or if your weight is starting to drop, consider switching to a different approach. Also, depending on your tolerance, trying to increase your food intake a bit could be a good strategy. Hope this gives you some things to think about!     Giving up coffee, eggs. Big part of my diet. Cutting way down on carbs and going through carb flu. Not fun. Going through caffeine withdrawal.

      Hi Carrie, wow! That's a lot of changes at once. I'm not sure if you've seen some of my other videos, but something that can be helpful when you drop your carbs and caffeine would be to add some electrolytes. It won't necessarily fix all the symptoms right away, but it should make them way more mild. Sending lots of support though! I've been watching your videos as I really want to put Hashi's in remission as the fatigue is killing me! Not to mention I get sick really easy. I suppose it doesn't help being a nurse. 🤪 Super stoked you are in Washington and can't wait to meet you! I currently reducing my caffeine intake...I love ☕️ so I'm grieving a bit. Haven't had eggs in over a week.

    I have hashimotos and vitiligo. Have been on AIP for a week and although I still feel very tired, the brain fog has already lifted. I don't think I can maintain such a restrictive diet so I will be introducing more foods in from next week... What should I try first? Is there a good way to ease in these new foods?

      Hi Karen, thanks for watching and for reaching out! My biggest thing for all of my patients is I want them to be happy and everyone has their own journey. However, if we were working together, I would give yourself more time. You're already noticing positive changes and that will likely continue. Plus, dietary changes become easier as you figure out ways to make it work for your life. I think 1 month is a great window to shoot for, then reassess at that time.
      However, whenever you feel the best time to reintroduce is for you, I'd start with introducing things like eggs, nightshades, and nuts/seeds, or the things that specifically make AIP different from Paleo. From there, you could try some gluten free grains (corn, rice, quinoa, oats) or legumes.
      If you're still feeling tired you'll likely want to up your calories as many people get too low when they make the switch to AIP. Getting some extra protein with each meal should do the trick.

      @@DrBradBodle Thanks for this. You were right... Way too soon. I introduced coffee and even had some wine with a meal over the weekend :(
      Soon after I had the coffee, (with a dash of milk) I had stomach cramps and hives on my face!! Which NEVER happened before.
      Once I had the wine, I then went and had some sushi too so right back to square one. :(
      The most difficult things are social interactions and not having coffee in the mornings, but I have decided to take your advice and to eliminate for at least a month.
      Back to the drawing board. A new approach again.. Will keep you posted.

    This is my issue, I have broke away from eating gluten, limiting my sugar, and am down to a cup of coffee a day. I’m trying to cut out the coffee.
    I’m struggling to find foods that are healthy and won’t cause any flare ups. My day consists of eating eggs for two meals and steak/chicken/pork (or) with small amount of potatoes and carrots for dinner. I’m frustrated because I have found the more calories I’m taking in the better I feel and can function. I don’t realize I’m allergic to something until I try it. Nuts in any form cause an allergic reaction. I’m searching for small things I can add that won’t cause more damage while everyone uses something I’m allergic to or refuse to eat. I’m just frustrated. Any ideas?

      Hi Shelby! Thanks so much for sharing! Let's see if I can help a bit. Honestly, I can understand how things are frustrating, but it sounds like you're doing a really great job. A quick note, while coffee can be problematic for some people, it isn't that way for everyone. As long as you're not relying on it for energy and it isn't impacting your sleep, then one cup a day could be reasonable depending on how you feel. What else are you looking to add back into your diet? I think more vegetables would be a good place to start as they would give you some variety, and they are generally tolerated better for most people. Also consider that once you find some things that work, it may take a bit of time and healing before you can start adding in other options. Let me know what you think and we can continue to chat!     My hashimoto skip to graves and back.what is this condition and brown rice is good or bad for me? Protein intolerance have any big role.pls reply dr..

      Hi Sujith, it's important to understand that people with Grave's disease can also have TPO and Tg antibodies. It's more likely to be Grave's disease if you have TSI or TSH receptor antibodies. If you don't, then it's more likely that your Hashimoto's is shining back and forth between hyper and hypo, which occurs in many individuals. If you can figure out with your doctor exactly what is going on, then it will help you to make better decisions regarding your health. Brown rice may or may not be good. Some people have sensitivities to many types of grains and rice, others do not. You can remove it and see how you feel if you're suspicious that it's causing a problem.

This is where it would be important to get an examination and labs to figure out what is going on and if inflammation is playing a role. I know it can be hard to find a health professional who will listen, but sometimes these kinds of symptoms are more complicated than what can be described through text. I know this isn't a perfect answer, but I would encourage you to continue to reach out to family and friends and see if they know any practitioners who they trust and could help you.

    I was diagnosed with hashimotos at 12, 18 years ago. I was never given any kind of dietary advice and have struggled ever since. I’ve done a paleo diet on and off the past 7 years and I definitely feel better when I do it, but it’s so hard in a social setting. It’s also not done much for my depression symptoms which I always associated with my hashimotos. I’m intrigued by the multiple-system issues that you mentioned in this video and how AIP might address that with the mental health issues. It’s just so limiting; it would be a huge shift for me, especially when I’m making food for my family too. It’s so hard to have a positive attitude with this!!

      Hi Katie, thanks so much for the comment and sharing your experience! I really appreciate it. As I mentioned in the video, different people are going to need different levels of intensity with their nutritional approach. AIP is certainly more restricting, but if you felt stressed in a social setting with paleo, then AIP might be more of a stressor than a benefit. It's all about finding that right fit and if you noticed changes with paleo, then it could be worth it to use that as your base, then make adjustments from there. Remember, our diet isn't about being "perfect" all the time, it's about finding what works, then adapting it to fit your needs. If that requires you to be paleo most of the time, with certain nights out where you're a little more relaxed, then that's ok too, as long as your health is doing well.
