An awesome detail to this video, is the living history aspect of a fuel oil furnace. Our house was built in 1959 and we moved out in July of 72, still having an oil tank in the back yard for the furnace. In Omaha you had to call Milder Oil and they would park in your driveway and run a hose from the truck to your tank in the back yard. Oh, the good old days.
Hey I used to live in Fairbanks, yes the winter days are short. But the summer days are long!!! Thank for all you are doing, teaching us how to restore tools. Collecting tools :)

Nice job, that turned out great! I just finished a Millers Falls 701 micrometer. Picked it up at an estate sale for 50¢. It was rusted solid. Spent an afternoon getting it apart (heat and pentrant) then cleaned it up The hardest part was figuring out what size screw held the barrel to the stem (turned out to be an 8-36) It was a fun project, and I’m enjoying having it in my toolbox
Nice job Scout. I find myself drawn to some tools a lot more than others. For some reason I have way to many pairs of bolt cutters and I find it hard to walk past old bench grinders but my serious collecting is Australian made g clamps. Weird I know but as you said people collect all sorts of tools. I have a database of what I have and a copy on my phone so that when I come across one I know if I have it already or if it’s that rare one I’ve been chasing. I’m the only person I know that collects g clamps and I’m building sets from all the different manufacturers before we lose that part of our manufacturing history. I probably won’t be able to find them all but as you say the hunt is half the fun and you learn some history along the way. Merry Christmas my friend and stay warm. Cheers Stuart and Lea. Nice job on the utility knife. I like your channel because you always have a story to tell. There is so many channels on UA-cam that the presenter says nothing and just plays loud music which tells me nothing. My first Millers Falls tool I got was a 2 speed breast drill that I have owned for over 40 years. I am also a big fan of New Britain tools. I don't collect P&C brand tools, but I own over 400 of them because I live a half hour from where the factory was located and they are common around here. I collect Plomb ratchets and give the other Plomb tools to a friend. I collect Proto tools also. As far as the Proto pear head ratchets, I just added numbers 74 and 75 to the hoard. Both 1/4 inch Hi Lock aircraft tools. I collect just about any tool that I find pleasing to the eye. Have a great Christmas and a better new year.
Over the years I’ve read many articles on how to run a business and have attended seminars on running a small business. The advice that’s always given is find your niche and specialize in that one thing. The logic is good. You quickly become an expert, estimates will be simpler, fewer tools needed, etc. My trouble is I would get bored doing things that way. While I don’t collect as a hobby I can’t imagine going to a flea market and not buying an item that interests me because it doesn’t go with my collection. I have passed on many tools because I didn’t have space for them, didn’t have the right vehicle to bring it home or just plain didn’t have the money to buy it.
J Anderson - I find in the beginning of our hobby we tend to hoard more than collect, as we acquire more we get picky and that's when we start collecting! 😃👍

SC - Nice job! I have a few Millers Falls tools and still use them. I've got a MF Push Drill that I keep in my electrical pouch - not for HD usage but when installing a new devise outlet of switch it makes drilling a small diameter hole (if needed when doing a flush mount box) a lead pipe since. I also have an old MF Electric Drill and a few other items including the right angle attachment shown in the video.
"You could end up with buckets of rusty stuff waiting to be restored" - Just living the dream! I got an early model (1940's) JS3100 24 inch beaver jig/scroll saw recently. Needs just a little once over. Still in good condition. From the original owners son. I can't wait to see the SC Junior tool set! That sure is a nice knife. I think it's my new favorite.
@Josh Wild Not sure if you meant to reply to me or Scoutcrafter. If you have a wrench that needs doing you are probably best off just watching Scoutcrafter or another community member do a similar restoration and then attempt to just do it by hand yourself. There is a lot that can be done with just vinegar, baking soda, scotch brite and sandpaper... And enough oil, elbow grease and time. You could also practice ahead of time and try to get the results you are after with another tool. If it's something specific that is wrong/broken with the wrench then you'll need someone with the right tools to do that specific job. If you are looking for someone to completely restore a tool by hand or a specific decoration, finish application, or paint job. Those are the areas I might be able to help you out with. But for the amount of time that takes, it may be more cost effective to just attempt it yourself. Plus I really wouldn't want to take on a Restoration unless I was 100% sure you knew what you wanted done. I'm just a guy who does this as a hobby. If the wrench is broken and you need someone with a lathe or cnc I cannot help you. But if the wrench is intact then you could probably do it yourself with just a few simple tools. You could always reply to me here and I could give you advice on how to proceed. Cheers man!

Nice job and some good history...when I retired I started going to auctions met some really good people.Some of them have outbuildings full of all the things they collect...i was amazed and thought why....i'm working on expanding my garage (shop) another 200 sq.ft and thinking why Not...lol...stay safe crafterman...

Doggone you Scoutcrafter, Sooo, after viewing this video and the other recent one on the two Stanley's, I just had to check in my old toolboxes and crates from our move to our new house and lo and behold I have the same two Stanley's #1299 & #199, The #1299 is actually in the original red paint, albeit scuffed up. I also found a Fuller brand, made in USA. Keep it up and Merry Christmas.
I lived in Alaska for three years in the early 80s. I lived in Anchorage which is considerably farther south than Fairbanks! I remember at this time of year that the sun DID rise, but it only stayed up for a couple of hours and it never rose very far above the horizon, You could cover the sun with your thumb so it was dusky the whole 'day.'
That knife turned out beautiful. You said you could have gotten new old stock but what you have is 100% better. I am probably the last person to get a fiber wheel. I was looking for a 6 inch and finally found one. Just on my limited budget I can't get the wrong one. Could you list the part number and where you get yours? Ok, I'll ask. How do you know? 🤣 I started out with all my Grandpa's tools. Still working on-em. Bought a old red rolling tool chest (or box?) From an estate yard sale. Got some nice stuff to work on too.👍☺
John, with that music, I thought the Scoutcrafter was going to get a visit from someone from the cable company or get a pizza delivered. ;-) As far as quality tools, Miller's Falls were aces in my humble opinion. Want some eye candy, then check out the Miller's Falls 5010A Parsons Brace. I've been wanting to snag one in the worst way.
Beautiful utility knife. Looks NOS to me!! With so many utility knives, you should think about making blade guards for them like the Stanley 199. But not sure if you put blades in them to be worth it. I have a drawer full of non-retractable blades and I’m always cautious to stick my hand in a grab one.
When dealing with damaged screw heads I have found it best to hammer the defromed metal back to its original location then use a file to carefully reshape the screw slot. Try it, you may like it.
John, how do you deal with the safety issues of a fixed blade? Dedicated slot in toolbox? Sheath? Hang on pegboard? Seems like the retractable blade was a big improvement.
Kevin for heavy duty work nothing beats a fixed blade and you’re right you have to take extra precautions when storing them. You can’t just put them in a toolbox or in your pocket. I keep mine on a small shelf that doesn’t allow me to get cut. 😃👍

I have a beautiful Goodell-Pratt hacksaw from my grandpa that I restored and use all the time. It has a gorgeous wood handle and is a joy to use

I remember at this time of year that the sun DID rise, but it only stayed up for a couple of hours and it never rose very far above the horizon, You could cover the sun with your thumb so it was dusky the whole 'day.'

That knife turned out beautiful. You said you could have gotten new old stock but what you have is 100% better. I am probably the last person to get a fiber wheel. I was looking for a 6 inch and finally found one. Just on my limited budget I can't get the wrong one. Could you list the part number and where you get yours? Ok, I'll ask. How do you know? 🤣 I started out with all my Grandpa's tools. Still working on-em. Bought a old red rolling tool chest (or box?) From an estate yard sale. Got some nice stuff to work on too.👍☺
One thing you instilled in me anyway is when i pick up a tool to use it , I look at who made it, the design, & what i can do later to make it better.

As far as quality tools, Miller's Falls were aces in my humble opinion. Want some eye candy, then check out the Miller's Falls 5010A Parsons Brace. I've been wanting to snag one in the worst way.

Beautiful utility knife. Looks NOS to me!! With so many utility knives, you should think about making blade guards for them like the Stanley 199. But not sure if you put blades in them to be worth it. I have a drawer full of non-retractable blades and I’m always cautious to stick my hand in a grab one.

When dealing with damaged screw heads I have found it best to hammer the defromed metal back to its original location then use a file to carefully reshape the screw slot. Try it, you may like it.

John, how do you deal with the safety issues of a fixed blade? Dedicated slot in toolbox? Sheath? Hang on pegboard? Seems like the retractable blade was a big improvement.
Kevin for heavy duty work nothing beats a fixed blade and you’re right you have to take extra precautions when storing them. You can’t just put them in a toolbox or in your pocket. I keep mine on a small shelf that doesn’t allow me to get cut. 😃👍
