Finding Your Purpose: My Last Lecture

  • At the end of every semester, I dedicate my last lecture to my students. The main theme is around what I wished I would have known at their age and if this is the last time we talked, this is WHAT I WANT THEM TO KNOW.
Each semester, the topic varies, but the overall purpose is the same. This year, while talking to my mom about my plans for the lecture, she said she wished she was there. My teaching assistants, Becca and James, decided to record it for her. For everyone else, you get to see it too. Welcome to my classroom!

I am glad I am not the only one feeling empty when the semester is over. I am excited for the break and so sad!

It is so important for professors to care about their students and their world mentality, not just their mentality in a certain class.

Great lecture. I would add one additional consideration: balance. Growing up I was the first generation of young women taught that my ambitions should be more than “just” being a wife and stay at home mother. I could have it all. Fast forward 40 years and most of my female friends and colleagues tell me that has not been their experience. Many of us made choices to prioritize either our family life or our career and those choices came with consequences. I was offered a job I did not take. If I had taken that job I would likely be making three times my current salary. It is also very likely that my children would have grown up with a mother who had very little time for them. I made a choice. I don’t regret my choice. A few friends who choose not to have children look back and lament that choice, others are happy with the choice they made. At university we tend to focus on the career. Like is about more than just what you do to make money. Consider your whole life and create a balance that fits you.

That is great advice. I like that perspective and I will make sure to add it to the next last lecture. I find people are in a rush to “make it”. Progress takes time, and success is a function of personal preferences. I wish I spent more time in my early 20’s investing in identifying what I want. Thanks for watching and for your comment. I appreciate your outlook and learn from it
