Notes: I said "unrealist" instead of "unrealistic" and the label for the Garmin Edge 520 says 130+. Otherwise, all my pics are objectively the best 😁Looking forward to the $2k vid nerds!
Neither of you bought sunglasses. I can’t go one minute at race pace without crying (from the wind) or having bugs hit me in the eye. Thought I’d mention... but otherwise awesome video!!!!!
Been meaning to find out.. What cycling glasses does a prescription glasses wearer wear? Contacts? They're ok but dust and sweat kind of make them annoying.
I vote Bryan. I think the Madone and all the aero kit will be faster on race day, and the trainer will help make you faster. Just try to keep the rubber side down because I don't think he had a helmet on his list :p
Canyon aeroad gets you the full carbon aero package with ultegra di2 or sram force axs for only 6000. It only weighs 7.6kg too. Then buy favero Assioma unos for 450 and knockout pedals and power meter in one purchase. Next get Wahoo Elemnt bolt for around 200. It’s one of the cheapest, lightest, and most aero computers. You now have a great race ready bike and 1500 left to spend on literally anything else.
Bryan took this one...adding the trainer and starting with a complete bike the Trek Madone...Thanks for great content Jeff and race debriefs..I have used alot of the tactics to good use.
A fun and interesting expert racer's take on how to drop coin to be a "serious" racer. It was frivolous and practical at the same time. Thanks for the regular interesting and insightful content!
I think Bryan's build allows for more flexibility, you could get a cheaper trainer and still have some money for sunglasses, a maintenance kit, and even a GoPro. Bryan is the winner in my eyes.
The win has to go to Bryan! although I would probably go for the di2 version and a lesser trainer. But it was the skinsuit that did it. If you want to win races then that is the biggest difference!
Overall I like Brian's picks best except wider bars and swap the skin suit for a power meter. Not sure how you leave off a power meter when spending 8k on a bike. I just put a Quarq on my bike and it is a real game changer with training.
Giant propel in the UK is £3500, so just under $5k direct conversion. For that you get mechanical ultegra and decent deep section wheels. Assioma duo pedals kills pedals + power meter. And they're great pedals. Swap the saddle for your preference. Upgrade the tyres. Then you've got about $2k to spend on everything else...
I'm giving the win to Bryan solely on the forethought of going with the wax and crockpot. Not only is he saving a couple of watts at the start with a clean chain but that goes up to an extra few more once Jeff has managed to pick up some road grime on his chain. Not only is there some power savings but a few thousands km down the track when the chain starts wearing there is even more watts to be saved and not only are there watts being lost but the wear on the sprockets and chain means that you're up for replacement parts a lot sooner than you need to. Have a look at the Oz Cycle channel and in particular "Is this the ultimate bicycle chain lube? - Test results". I expect that Jeff will start waxing his chain and Bryan may even convert over from the Molten Speed Wax to a cheaper better alternative.
Great content as always, guys. Arent you missing more (sets of) training clothing, a bike pump and if Jeff is going to put it all together himself, I guess more equipment would at least be nice - like a bike hang setup. My vote goes to Bryan but I feel I owe Jeff a vote for all the brilliant content.
14:54 DYI and MI action cameras are similar but not better. There are a lot of cameras with better image quality only heavier and less aero. If it is possible to lay a camera on a track or on a drone it could work. But otherwise, GoPro is the king here.
My $8K bike choice would be a LOW MK Road custom made aluminum frame, some custom wheels built by ProWheelBuilder.com. Cockpit, saddle, seatpost all sourced from AliExpress. And finally the group would be Shimano 105. Bontrager 25C R3 tires with latex tubes. This should get around $4K then I can spend the rest on some good bud and beers for a year. No need for a Garmin. Walmart sells glasses. I typically only wear Rapha clothing and some Core level kit will come in at a pretty low price.
As an inline speedskater, heatmouldable is not custom. I have both custom boots and heatmoulded boots. They are nowhere near the same fit. But I guess the fit is less important for cycling shoes (mine are just the first ones I bought in 2007).
What do I buy for $8,000? A really nice bike for about $2,000 and a plant ticket to Europe where I spend 2 weeks making incredible memories...on that bike.
@karsten- not exactly true as velotoze match the shape of the shoe. A shoe with a bunch of buckles is not aero as a flat profile (this is why lace shoes are some of the most aero- especially with velotoze)
Being that you are a crit racer Im shocked you didnt go for Tubeless tires Jeff! They roll faster, corner better, AND it's 1 less chance of having to use the pit in a crit. Also shocked you dont use speedplay. Corner! Corner! Corner! I still vote Jeff's simply bc it's a frame that's a lot more durable.
I tried Bont (I bought a pair), and I hate them. I have double wide feet and a high instep (Bont told me this because I couldn't get my feet in the shoe, we measured my feet to the mm, and picked the right size, apparently this is due to my large instep). I didn't want to order a double-wide because it is counted as a custom shoe (non-returnable) and I didn't want to pay $600 for a semi-custom shoe. I went with SiDl Ergo 5 Mega. These fit perfectly, and I had my bike shop order them, so I could return them if they didn't fit.

@Jayden 123 Merida doesn’t sell in NA I think

Bryan wins for including a trainer. That’s a great touch. Y’all forgot glasses.

DISC BREAK ROTORS
I would go with the Trek, I think Bryan won this one. A TRAINER, and a really nice.
The best $8K racing bike is a $3K Ultegra equipped mid-range rig from the bike shop and a fully stocked $5,000 Broom Wagon! 😏
Bryan took this one...adding the trainer and starting with a complete bike the Trek Madone...Thanks for great content Jeff and race debriefs..I have used alot of the tactics to good use.
Jeff - you have your next comparison video - Nopinz aero skinsuit vs Rapha kit.

Love this video, I just got my first road bike and will be taking some of these recommendations and probably from the $2000 video as well!
Jeff, what about a STEM? and do you want to keep your cables fully enclosed/integrated (in a stem and head tube and be more aero? :) )
Bryan for the trek. System six would have been the more AERO *shot* option. Also computer mounts were missed.
14:54 DYI and MI action cameras are similar but not better. There are a lot of cameras with better image quality only heavier and less aero. If it is possible to lay a camera on a track or on a drone it could work. But otherwise, GoPro is the king here.
