Not just Taiwan. It's well-known that there was a lot of corruption in the building of the Three Gorges Dam, and also some very questionable design choices. Even the CCP admits to cracks and shifting, though they insist that they're within tolerances. Three Gorges Dam is in trouble as we speak. It's failing in its flood control function and has opened all floodgates in an attempt to preserve the structure of the dam itself, despite flooding in downstream Wuhan.
The Itaipu dam in Brazil often produces more electricity than the Three Gorges one even though it has a smaller installed capacity + holds the record for the most MWh ever generated by a dam in one year

It also holds the world record in "yearly production" with a VAST 103 MWh of electricity since Jan 01 through dec 31, last year.
