    As an arborist people often ask me questions that I don’t normally have any information about fruit trees are a specialty and now I know and abundant about avocados and with this video I’m learning about mangoes they don’t grow in my area either of them but it’s nice to have the information to share with people who have a question and I can share your video or just have a brief conversation with someone who wants to talk to a specialist like myself who is basically a hired saw 🙂

      Doug, could it be the YT algorithm is reading your thoughts? Seriously though you must have the fruit growing bug big time when your break from working with your trees is to go inside and watch more vids about trees!
      I really appreciate your positive words, thank you.

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  7 місяців тому

      Mango trees in the ground do not require a lot of water once they are established but if it's hot and dry you maybe wanna give them an hour of watering every 10 days or 2 weeks. If in pots just check the soil and when it's dry water until damp.

    So question is it smart then to place a beehive next to your mango trees?

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  Рік тому +3

      Luis, I actually talked about that during recording but I chose to eliminate that part from the final vid. Yes, if you drove around down here you'd see stacks of hive boxes along the fields and groves. With mango the primary pollinator is flies so instead of a hive a lot of people will put a pile of something that rots like old meat or some fish which will attract flies who lay eggs and create more flies...I don't do that though 🤢

    • @SleepyLizard

    According to the University of Florida, mango panicles will on average produce less than 1 fruit per panicle. So you will typically harvest fewer mangos than panicles, even though some panicles wil hold more than one mango. The unhealthy or malformed mangos will naturally drop off. Some varieties are known to hold multiple fruits per panicle. Some varieties are known to produce mangos at different times of the season. In Florida depending in the variety most mangos flower in late winter/early spring, and the fruit are ready to harvest in early to late summer.

      Holy shit, that's quite quick it flowering after 8 years!
      But yeah, it should fruit since trees grown from seed generally flower when they're capable of making fruit. Although flowers may drop off for the first time it flowers but its possible.

    Was curious about Panicle, so here it is:
    panicle
    noun
    pan·i·cle ˈpan-i-kəl
    : a branched flower cluster (as of a lilac or some grasses) in which each branch from the main stem has one or more flowers

    My manilla mango tree flowered and its like every female flower on it grew a mango... so i figured that the tree will start knocking the fruits off and only keep what it can produce.. if it looks like its not.. im going to have to manually thin out the fruits by hand... branch cant handle the weight and or dont want it to desap the tree..

    How do you know when it’s time to harvest

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  Рік тому +1

      every mango variety has it's time... Rosigold starts in April (or maybe even March some years) then we get carrie and Haden in May into June. followed by Kent and Valencia Pride in July, the Keitt and Palmer into august.
      To be sure you pick one and take a little core sample. if the flesh is white it's still too early. if the flesh is yellow it's time to pick. you start with the biggest that are starting to flush color
      if you wait till they ripen on the tree you're not going to get to them all before they start to rot and fall off.
