@Xndingo11 You have to put in drop in filters id you want use them. They are placed inside the lens near where it connects to the camera. No screw on filter would go on this lens.
@heuykiller I always set my own ISO, I would not think about shooting in auto ISO. For the test I dropped the ISO slower to show how the VR works. Other times depending on location i bump my ISO higher to get the desired shutter speed. i have a lot of leeway in the D3s to go higher and higher with the ISO to get a fast enough SS to freeze action.
@GrimsditchImages i am pretty sure the lilkiwiguy is deaf thats sorta why he doesnt talk. But i wonder if the person above watched the full video to see the results from the lens, who knows.
@BOSTONIKON hi there, say you shoot at 200mm focal length. the rule of thumb is that your shutter speed should at least be 1/200 when shooting handheld because the longer focal length would require a faster shutter to prevent the blur. however, if a lens has a VR then the VR would cancel the vibration/blur and you would be able to use slower shutter speeds such as 1/100 like Jared did despite breaking the above rule. hope that helps.
@kentak47 ...Why? Because the amount of light passing through the iris of a lens of a given focal length is determined by the area of the opening, not the diameter. Area = pi x radius^2. If you double the diameter (thus the radius, too) you get four times as much light since 2^2 is 4. That's why an f/2 lens is two stops faster than an f/4. One stop more (f/2.8) doubles the exposure, and another stop more (f/4) doubles it again. Got it? ;-)
Mr Fro you did the unboxing of the D7000. But when is the full review coming up? I thought you would discuss this camera a lot more in detail. Why keep us waiting??
Thanks for the review -- I bought this (VR (original) not VRII) used yesterday for GBP 1,500 on black friday -- it's a lens I have LUSTED over for years. I could not justify the cost of the VR II -- but AT GBP 1,500 / USD 2,200 - I could not stop myself
Whats up Jared. I wanted to know why prime lenses are used by many pros. What is the big advantage? Also. for somebody who isn't going to spend a lot of money what is a good sub $1000 lense which i can use for both in and out door shots. thanx in advance.
@JaredPolin Yeah, I know. The F-stop scale is totally non-intuitive. Think how confusing it is to photography newbies. We tell them ISO 400 is twice as sensitive as ISO 200 (makes sense), and that 1/400 sec shutter speed is twice as fast as 1/200 (makes sense as long as you know fractions), and then we tell them f/2 is twice the exposure of f/2.8. The numeral relationship is goofy and the direction seems wrong. Quick! What's half the exposure of f/9? LOL
Nice touch with the number! ^^ I have another question: I noticed that the ISO changed between the images. Do you manually changed it depending of the situation or set a max value and auto? Because I would never think of changing the ISO because I thought the lighting condition was about the same in the shop? Thanks!
@RainnMakerr Because the glass is higher quality. The best zoom lens is not as sharp, fast or colorful as the best prime. Thats how it is. And when you are on a budget it is also good to go for primes, because you get higher image quality for the price. A good start on a Nikon is the 35mm 1.8G or the 50mm 1.8G depending on your needs those are great lenses. You can probably get similar lenses for Canon as well. Great glass for a good price.
Hi, I am a beginner photographer and I recently purchased a Nikon D3200, I did notice in one of your reviews that you suggested getting a better lens, which one do you suggest also considering I dont want to be spending to much money, thanks
hey Jared, thanks for all the videos that you do. if possible can you test it with teleconverters? i am debating whether or not to get this, 200mm, or the 300 2.8.
I have the 135mm f2 dc and the 200 f2. Somehow for portraits the 135mm f2 wide open manages better results. For everything else the 200 is just great. The 200 is huge lens to carry around: you get some free exercise with it.
1/100 or 1 stop VR is nothing. I'm sure this lens can be shot at least at 1/30 on a D3X, if the mirror vibrations don't blur things up. On that scale I can shoot my Canon 200/2 IS at 1/15 easily but the sharpness depends on the mirror slap of the body.
@brianwoods82378 VR needs to be turned off also when you are doing panning shots or when you are using a tripod or if you subject is jumping around a lot....
@mirciusx the 300, as a indoor sports lens (0r any low light situation) isn't in the same league as the 200. The 200 is superior using every criteria known to photography. . .
Nice job on the review, Jared, but this f/2 lens is a full stop, not 1/4 stop, faster than the f/2.8 you compared it to. Might want to review the all-too-confusing math used to derive f-stops. Briefly, the f-stop is a ratio of the lens focal length to it's aperture diameter. This lens is a focal length of 200 mm and the max aperture is about 100 mm. 200/100 = 2. If the ratio was 2.8, the aperture would be about 71 mm (200/71 = 2.8). While the diameter isn't cut in half, the amount of light is.
You can tell that the fro doesnt sniff test things as a joke when at 1:40 in this video he takes the lens cap bag off and puts it down, and quickly grabs it again, gives it a good ole snort, and puts it back down. This guy is awesome!
@pogi09282805724 No. The radius is, of course, always half the diameter. If the diameter of a circle is 100mm, the radius is 50mm. If you double the diameter to 200mm, the radius is 100mm, double what it was before.
well its a thumbrule that if you shoot handheld at say 200 mm, youre shutterspeed should at least be 1/200 sec. or on 50 mm lens it should be about 1/50s. but with this lens hes reviewing thats got a vr you can drop it down 2 or 3 steps so on a 200 mm you can probebly get it sharp at a 50s or 100s:) its a good thing to know and has helpt me alot in darker places
Apparently the vr2 aint much better than its predecessor, which was a fantastic lens. I can buy the vr"1" for £2800, whereas the vr2 is £4500, so its a no-brainer!
@pogi09282805724 If you mean that doubling the diameter of a circle quadruples the *original* radius, that is true, but irrelevant. When you double the *radius* of a circle, you quadruple the *area* of the circle, which relates to lens aperture in that the area of the opening determines exposure. Increasing an aperture from 20 to 28 mm doubles the exposure (1 f-stop) because that doubles the area of the opening.
It reminds me of one of those Russian dolls where you start out with something massive and then you end up with a 'small' lens at the end. It's still pretty big, but I was expecting something huge considering the size of that camera bag.
6k is a bit steep for most...You can get a whole kit for that sort of money.24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 135 2 , 50 1.2 and a nice meal. Still... a sweet sweet lens, no argument there :)
You can’t shoot this lens at 1/200. Needs to be a minimum of 1/400 if you don’t want movement blur. VR or not, on a 24-36 megapixel camera it will not be as sharp. I set my minimum shutter now at at least 2x the length of the lens.
Hello Jared, your reviews and tips are great. I would like to ask you if you think there is many differences about bokeh and image quality between this new version and the previous one. I am very interested on buying this lense but there is no stock in Spain :-) and I only find the old version. Have you tasted both (the old and the newest, considering bokeh). Sorry, I cant explain myself very well in English! :-) Thanks
f/2.0 is one full stop faster than f/2.8 unlike what he mentioned in the video (a quarter of a stop)
@Xndingo11 You have to put in drop in filters id you want use them. They are placed inside the lens near where it connects to the camera. No screw on filter would go on this lens.
@ashwinshankar any camera, i like 70-200s for portraits.
a full stop slower not a quarter
@fantomkaustubh now that you mention it no its just like on the larger lenses there is a front protector thingy that protects it if that makes sens.
@snifnscratch its the same as on the 300 2.8s.
@brianwoods82378 well sometimes vr slows down your focus and ive noticed if i leave it on and have to shoot fast it misses.
@lumow is that considered a full stop form 2 to 2.8I guess it is, sounds good to me.
@HokieFanatic1 not sure yet, so far i have the only one!!! Have you seen the blue one or just like the red more?
@heuykiller I always set my own ISO, I would not think about shooting in auto ISO. For the test I dropped the ISO slower to show how the VR works. Other times depending on location i bump my ISO higher to get the desired shutter speed. i have a lot of leeway in the D3s to go higher and higher with the ISO to get a fast enough SS to freeze action.
@GrimsditchImages i am pretty sure the lilkiwiguy is deaf thats sorta why he doesnt talk. But i wonder if the person above watched the full video to see the results from the lens, who knows.
@itsmeeeeeeeeeee i dont have one yet that and i cant even open the rAW files yet. In due time.
@briguy3418 not sure honestly, nikon tech would not answer a question well enough for me all they said it was some formula or something.
@aaguirre123 i personally do not like teli converters.
@YazeedWILD wow this was a very worth while comment than you so much for it.
I would never buy from allen's store because im sure jared played with all the lens and camera, opened box, finger prints, sniff test etc.
sleeper they obviously demo units lol, unlikely they sell them as new.
+Itaku a $6000 demo lens? not likely.
*****
review units are usually demo units and are either sent back or sold as open box.
Sure, this lens now smells like hand sanitize now
There is a slot (near the lens-camera body mount) into which you can drop 52mm filters, so yes, it does take filters, which fro didnt kno
@kentak47 ...Why? Because the amount of light passing through the iris of a lens of a given focal length is determined by the area of the opening, not the diameter. Area = pi x radius^2. @JaredPolin thanks for your response. so teliconverters would decrease the quality? also what do you think about capture nx2?
@brianwoods82378 why turning off, because when you use it on a tripod the VR moves your image and makes it blured and moved
Any chance of taking a video tour of Al's Camera store?
@Giorgosm10 I can not honestly see buying one of these anytime soon wait anytime ever lol.
Who is the manufacturer of the replacement tripod bracket, that allows you to carry the lens hood reverse mounted? (temporarily)
Jared could you do a video where you go through what programs you have on your apps bar
thanks
Peter
What is VR?
Also what is the rule about the focal lenght, and the shutter speed again?
i want to buy a lenshood but i don't know if i should get e flower one or a normal full one, what's the difference?
Mr Fro you did the unboxing of the D7000. But when is the full review coming up? I thought you would discuss this camera a lot more in detail. Why keep us waiting??

Wouldn't the Nikon 135mm 2.0 or the Canon 135mm 2.0 be a good alternative on a crop body?
can you put a filter on it?it looks really big...plz tell me
Whats up Jared. I wanted to know why prime lenses are used by many pros. What is the big advantage? Also. for somebody who isn't going to spend a lot of money what is a good sub $1000 lense which i can use for both in and out door shots. thanx in advance.
Is there no lens cap on this lens?
Fro, are there copyright issues if we post photos on your site for photo of the week etc.?
Would this work on a dx or fx body?
Great review as always Jared love how you get down to business with all of your reviews
I wonder how much it would cost if it was a 28-200 with that same huge aperture?
@JaredPolin Yeah, I know. The F-stop scale is totally non-intuitive. Think how confusing it is to photography newbies. We tell them ISO 400 is twice as sensitive as ISO 200 (makes sense), and that 1/400 sec shutter speed is twice as fast as 1/200 (makes sense as long as you know fractions), and then we tell them f/2 is twice the exposure of f/2.8. @kentak47 if u double the diameter u quadruple the radius!! ryt?
Would you do a full review of nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR II full review? That will be great.
What is the difference between VR and IS?
Nice touch with the number! ^^
I have another question:
I noticed that the ISO changed between the images. Do you manually changed it depending of the situation or set a max value and auto? Because I would never think of changing the ISO because I thought the lighting condition was about the same in the shop?

Spaeckli my combo!

Where do i sign for a Free E-Book?
@JaredPolin ok..! u wud b careful with a 6k$ lens neway...but why cant we hav tht same thingy on all the lenses??!!
F2.8 to F2 is quarter of a stop only?😮
@JaredPolin now i know how you got those biceps ...with heavy lenses!
I have the 135mm f2 dc and the 200 f2. Somehow for portraits the 135mm f2 wide open manages better results. For everything else the 200 is just great. The 200 is huge lens to carry around: you get some free exercise with it.
Amazing bokeh! How heavy is it?
on a crop dx body whould it kill a 300mm nikkor

12 years on, I wander if Jared ever brought this lens
That lens is awesome are you going to buy one?
Nice job on the review, Jared, but this f/2 lens is a full stop, not 1/4 stop, faster than the f/2.8 you compared it to. Might want to review the all-too-confusing math used to derive f-stops. Isn’t the Nikon 180mm 2.8 just as good ?
300 2.8, 200 2, or 200-400 4? Sports and portraits.
The Nikon 200 f2 has been my dream lens for a while now and your review just made me want it more. Maybe One Day.
Did you buy one, Jared?
well its a thumbrule that if you shoot handheld at say 200 mm, youre shutterspeed should at least be 1/200 sec. or on 50 mm lens it should be about 1/50s. but with this lens hes reviewing thats got a vr you can drop it down 2 or 3 steps so on a 200 mm you can probebly get it sharp at a 50s or 100s:)

1:25 f/2 to f/2.8 is a full stop, not 1/4.
The best indoor sports lens on the planet. .. period.
What is VR?

VR is vibration reduction, so the photos arent shaky and blurry
Ah, this looks like an awesome lens, Jared!...Is this going into your arsenal?
@DisIsHowiRoll try single autofocus and move your autofocus sensor around to where your subjects eyes are
Version one does have a sliding VR ring
Which one is better 80-200mm on tripod. or 200mm F2 ?? Also, I own a 80-200mm AF ED already, if I buy this , will I be having something different?
80-200 is normal lens, this one is super fantastic lens if you can afford
5:26 lol who said we don't need manual for the lens at the beginning :)
It reminds me of one of those Russian dolls where you start out with something massive and then you end up with a 'small' lens at the end. It's still pretty big, but I was expecting something huge considering the size of that camera bag.
@kentak47 In that last sentence, change "doubles" to "halves."
jared, go play with a 600 f4! haha i think it would be awesome to see what you could do with it
6k is a bit steep for most...You can get a whole kit for that sort of money.24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 135 2 , 50 1.2 and a nice meal.
Still... a sweet sweet lens, no argument there :)
omg if i had that money i wud buy this lol but hey Jared whats in your macbook dock?
@kentak47 lol wow.
Want to get this lense for sure.... I will stay with my 300mm 2.8 ED manual focus lense (1978 lenses)
Fantastic lens
@setosail VR is vibration reduction
Very Nice Review! Thanks for sharing your Knowledge.
Awesome piece of glass BUT not as awesome as the red raw tshirt your rockin' , when can we buy one ;)
nope not this time.
You can’t shoot this lens at 1/200. Needs to be a minimum of 1/400 if you don’t want movement blur. VR or not, on a 24-36 megapixel camera it will not be as sharp. I set my minimum shutter now at at least 2x the length of the lens.
Thats one huge front element
Oh My God, awesome sharpness
dude where is the canon 200mm f2?
well go and do a job with your powershoot or why not a pinchhole camera and se how it goes from there
I'm from 2050, feel sad for you guys as we 3d print anything we please including this for like few $s.
and will you buy it? =)
70-200 2.8 is a full stop slower, not a quarter stop
Hello Jared, your reviews and tips are great.
I would like to ask you if you think there is many differences about bokeh and image quality between this new version and the previous one. I am very interested on buying this lense but there is no stock in Spain :-) and I only find the old version. Have you tasted both (the old and the newest, considering bokeh). Sorry, I cant explain myself very well in English! :-)
Thanks
that lense is so BOOOM!
