As a black woman, it's not just hair. It's not just hair. It's not just hair.
As a child, I never quite had "good" hair. It was coarse, sparse and hard to manage. Growing up, I remember sitting in the hair salon chair, and feeling the itching sensation of the relaxer on my scalp. On the verge of tears, I would ask if it's time to wash it out, but my coils and kinks weren't straight enough, and I would be forced to sit under the dryer to speed up the process. I grew to loath the hair salon...I know my mother didn't mean any harm in making me get my hair relaxed, or the countless times of getting tight braids that made sleeping on them a nightmare, or telling my father to shave my head because my hair was unruly. It was in 2010 when the relaxers and braids would end, I had found my salvation for my hair. Dreadlocks. This changed everything for the health and overall well-being of my hair. It was thriving. My hair could grow in any direction it pleased. No combs, no tight styles, just my hair being free. But in October that year, I received a diagnoses that would ultimately change the course of my life, forever. It was SLE, systemic lupus erythematosus. Much to my own surprise, I received this news rather well, as the disease runs in my family. I was placed in the care of a phenomenal paediatric rheumatologist, who laid out the possible side affects of treatment and the disease itself. I was prepared for the worst, well, that is what I thought. Flash forward to 2019 and I'm doing my daily shower routine. Thoroughly washing my hair, I pull my hand away from my scalp, and I see a clump of hair in my palm. I race to find a mirror, and there it was, a bald patch, roughly the size of a five rand coin. My initial thought was, "it's fine, it'll grow back." I can hide the patch with my dreadlocks. But then the dreadlocks started falling out. I was losing my hair. Denial came knocking on the door first, then anger, bargaining with God to give me my hair back, depression, and ultimately, I skipped the stage of acceptance. I refused to be bald by my lupus, I would not give it that power over my life. So what did I do...I shaved my head. And this was merely the beginning of my hair journey.

@@furrsmith8131 my hair growth ebbs and flows, but I’m hopeful it will regain its glory. Videos such as Gail’s allows conversations around a black woman’s crown to be heard and validated. It is such a sensitive topic. I’ve been insecure about my hair and its texture for as long as I can remember I’ve had friends that have never seen my hair and for most of my adult life I remember always having a bold patch at the back of my head so to cover it up I would have weaves installed, which added more strain till one day 2019 November I decided to chop it all off chiskop and that brought on another issue coz I don’t have the head shape for a chiskop so I bought a wig. Fast forward to when my hair finally grew back I’m falling in love with it more people have seen me wear my hair and to my surprise they still think I’m beautiful, I’m no longer afraid of letting go of damaged ends I’m okay with being patient with my hair growth. Thank you for starting the conversation i hope it reaches a lot of women and girls and allows us to feel more confident. 💛

Hey Gail(FINALLY SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS WHAT I AM GOING THROUGH) THANK YOU JESUS🙏🙏 really thanks for sharing this, it really hit home for me. I have always had short hair too and most recently I went to cut it as usual after plaiting it for close to a month. Upon cutting it my stylist realised I had a patch and I asked him to cut it short so it can grow all at once.
When I got home I started googling and as I did, I found scary things. I NEVER THOUGHT I'D PRAY FOR HAIRGROWTH, BUT HEY HERE WE ARE. It wasn't until my other friend who is a hairstylist told me it was called Alopecia Patch and she told me that the product(vigro) I was using was perfect in promoting hair growth and to my surprise it really worked but the growth was super slow.
However, when I went back to cut my hair only to noticed the patch had moved from where it was to right in from on my hair line and I am still processing that(it's heartbreaking) to watch daily. I haven't been to a dermatologist because I can't afford it, my GP told me my diet also has an impact on this and he advised that I see a dietitian too.
WELL, I will go once I have saved enough money for now I'll have to suffer the depressing sight of losing my hair daily.
GOD WILLING THIS TOO SHALL PASS!!!!
Looking forward to more of your journey ♥️ I'm so encouraged and I feel like I'm not alone.

I lost a portion of hair after one of my locs fell off from a hairstyle that was pulled too much. Like Gail, at first the area was small then it became bigger and bigger. The worst part was that my open space was right in front. Unlike Gail, I decided to cut my hair the very day I realized I had lost hair, however, the space became so visible that not even a chiskop would hide it. Everytime I cut my hair, I would hope that the hair in that area would grow back but it never happened. Eventually, after 7/8 months I stopped cutting my hair. I started getting it braided monthly, without fail. The hair in that area started to grow back after 3 or 4 months of braiding. It's still growing but it is very thin, it's much better than before though, it's filling up slowly and it has been a year of braiding it now. I have learnt to stop applying all sorts of things to that area, I just always put my hair in a protective style and I forget about.

I wouldn't call my journey hair loss, but after my mother's death, I saw a change in my hair. It was not a thick anymore, it was brittle, thin and the length was affected. I also had hormonal imbalance, and that's when I decided to cut my hair and stopped using relaxer.
My scalp changed drastically, but I'm much better now.
I've found a sweet spot with my hair and locs have given me the confidence I need. 😁

🤣🤣 The CCCA part was hilarious but I understand as a man the moment you see hair loss, Chiskop 1 time. For Basadi, the reaction is different. I saw the same thing when my mum had a bald spot on her head albeit it wasn't alopecia. She bought all soughts of hair food and creams in the stores. No matter how many times you cut your hair, the moment you notice hair loss you immediately try to self medicate and at times it makes the situation worse. I've noticed the same thing with grey hair. It feels like a bit of yourself is being stolen from you. Hope all is well though.

Hello Gail, thank you for sharing your story. I was diagnosed with Lichen planopilaris last year after I noticed that my hairline was not growing back. At first I thought my hairline was being affected by braiding so I stopped braiding but it did not grow back, so I then cut my hair bold to start afresh like I have done before. But when my hair grew back it would grow from behind the hairline. And I was noticing shiny scar like patches on the front sides of my hair. I am now taking treatments but they told me there is not known cure, they are just treating the symptoms to stop further hair loss. I miss braiding my hair with all my heart.

    • @kayn2664
      @kayn2664 3 роки тому

I have been on the treatment for almost a year now and there is some regrowth. It's so small that some days it shows other days I am not sure if my eyes are deceiving me. However on the scarred tissue there will not be any hair growth. The patch will remain. The other thing is that hair that does regrow on the affected areas will not be the same texture as the rest of the head because the cells/follicles were already affected. The hair will be thinner. But what I know for sure is that the treatment has stopped the hair loss from continuing.

Yo Gail. I know the feeling. I can completely relate to your story. Although for me it’s two-fold. (1) I have androgenic (genetic) alopecia on the same spot on top of my head which I initially thought was CCCA but it turned out not to be. Then (2) I have traction alopecia on my hairline. The constant manipulation of hair, tight braids/ cornrows /weaves and frequent relaxers resulted in me having no hairline today. And each time I lost hair I thought the hair would grow back until it didn’t. I ended up having a hair transplant which I’m still growing and talk about on my channel but girl…. I feel you. Hopefully we can share knowledge and help others know more about alopecia and avoid what can be avoided. Thank you so much for sharing. I’m looking forward to more episodes. 😘

Oh Gail❤️ I’m also suffering from hair loss just on my hair line💔 I’ve consulted and even had PRP and micro needling sessions done but NO luck💔 my hair sample was taken to the lab by that particular hair clinic, months have gone by and I’m still waiting for my results 💔 thank you for sharing your story, many of us are hiding and feel ashamed talking or even showing people around us because the society we are surrounded by lacks knowledge when it comes to hair loss💔🥺 especially hair loss in black women.

I actually really enjoyed this video , something just made me stay and watch till the end , and i have to say ive learnt something . I dont have any problems with my hair in terms of growth but when you mentioned that some women are sometimes not comfortable with their natural hair i can totally relate . I honestly love natural hair but for some strange reason im never comfortable with my own hair , im more comfortable with having braids i just always feel uncomfortable when i have no braids , i even avoid eye contact with people 😢 but im trying by all means to be more comfortable now . Thanks Gail this was very insightful and informative topic 💕

Thank you so much for sharing. I went through the same experience 5 years ago at age 16, yhoo. I was devasted. I started growing hair patches at the back side of my hair after relaxing my hair with a hairglo product (my mum said they used it back in the days and it good for afro) I agreed ofcourse. Later the patches would grow into this huge patch, to a point where I felt like crying. People didn't understand my pain at first, I was scared to share to my friends why I am keeping my hair short (I tried forcing things at first) until I was scrolling through the net, and I found you. And in one of your post in Instagram, you openly shared about your hair conditions and you embraced it soo well. I thought to myself Oh wow, I have found someone to look up to and mostly I found deep comfort in what you shared in knowing that I was not alone. And you embraced your hair condition so well. That when I came out from the closet . Slowly and surely I stopped hiding under hats and benies. I started constantly cut my hair as frequently as I should and just embracing my short hair. Thank you, thank you and thank you for your openness. I am certain this will help someone struggling with the same conditions especially young girls, who are still soo concerned about their looks. I pray that this becomes their safe space in knowing that they are not alone.

lol Oh my gosh... my mom had this and by then we didn't know what the cause of it was. Lol I remember how confused and frustrated she was because she always had good, strong healthy hair. However moghel refused to go to any salons and so I was forced to be her hairstylist. We mostly did braids to cover up the patch. But also with that, we treated the patch with some black castor oil. Slowly but surely the hair grew back. If I'm not mistaken, must've been 11/12 months.

Thank you for sharing I really enjoyed it. Im going to watch part 2. Gel has never agreed with my hair at all. Even if I wet it real well the next day to try to comb it or pull it apart it's a mess gel isn't my bag. It's stiff & hard. Plus I don't like that hardening felling on my hair. I have to use a heavy grease or a cream to lay it down as best as it can & it does the job no gel for me.

@@BGladnessLekgoa hi, there's 2 methods, when you cook rice, as you are about to rinse it, save the water don't throw it away, let it ferment for about a day or two then put it on hair, some people prefer to wash it out after a couple of hours, I use a spray bottle, just spray then apply my products and leave it on, I do it for 5 days then I'll do a wash day on day 6.

Two years back.i decided to go natural and I was introduced to one of South African best natural hair product and I started noticing progress unfortunately mistakenly i replace my hairspray water bottle that I used to hydrate my hair with hand sanitizer and that's when the bigger problem begin the center of my hair began to fall off I chopped off my hair to shorter hairstyle and grow it back but I'm still facing the same problem and at this point I honestly have lost hope as some point I've thought about going to Dermatologist but ain't they a bit expensive??

I felt your pain. Mine was triggered by loss! And it's true.. You know when something is wrong with your hair from the rate of growth previously experienced. I was bold and bald by choice.. Now, nature was forcing me to be bald- my world just collapsed! I questioned everything for months... Why, why, why me.. Then, I played doctor /Research and Scientists for 3 years and finally I see it paying off... Homemade oils and lotions, routine and a new mindset has been my saving grace..
