Guinea pig cage makeover - fleece bedding is back!

- The guinea pig cage is getting a deep cleaning and a makeover! Paper bedding is out and fleece bedding is back! Thanks to Little Adventures (@LittleAdventures) for enlightening us about the wonders of IKEA TOFTBO bath mats as guinea pig bedding. They are super soft, comfortable, cheap, and absorbent. They are easily the best guinea pig bedding we have used yet. Plus they fit Midwest cages perfectly. The guinea pigs love them and have been popcorning a lot more often!
The humans are loving the bedding too! Paper bedding got really expensive. We realized we've been spending $100 per month on paper. So we bought a portable washing machine to wash the fleece bedding and the whole project will pay for itself in a few months. Plus it's oddly fun to do guinea pig laundry and fleece spot cleaning again!

In June 2019 we adopted five pigs from Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue. They are cute herbivorous pets with funny social interactions. We film all their behaviors, from cute guinea pig noises to eating sounds, playing with their food to sleeping with their eyes open, and occasional fighting. So far they have been most popular for their loud wheeking and rumblestrutting and their ridiculous guinea pig fights!
MEET THE PIG FAMILY
Spaghett is the boar of the herd. The rest of the pigs are females, but he’s a neutered male so they won’t be breeding. Sorry, no pregnant or baby guinea pigs! Spaghett has orange-brown ginger fur with a white crest on his head and cute red eyes. He goes on funny romps with entertaining popcorning and zoomies. He does hilarious rumblestrutting while purring. When pigs argue he trots over to comfort them. He likes burrowing through hay and standing on his back feet like a goofy dinosaur.
Acorn is the youngest. She has white, black, and gold fur with a cute mousy face. She’s inquisitive, always wants food, and talks to herself while exploring hay piles. Little Acorn’s special talent is jumping on houses for rooftop adventures.
Butternut appears either confused or deep in thought. She has white and gold fur. Her hobbies include sleeping and yawning while flopped over with her feet sprawled out. She continues wheeking, squeaking, and squealing at us after we have already given her food.
Pumpkin has black fur except for white back toes. She looks like a cow, a non-guinea pig, and a rabbit. She has noisy standoffs with Acorn when Acorn gets feisty.
Zucchin is the oldest and grumpiest. She has white and gray fur with cute red eyes. At first Zucchin fought with Spaghett. There were teeth chattering, nose raising, and hair puffing battles. Now they get along, but Zucchin is still a grouch. She loves to chase other pigs out of their homes, then follow them to another home and chase them out of that one too. But she looks like a cute rat!
THEIR HOME
The pigs live in a custom 4 by 6 foot cage we made by merging 3 Midwest Guinea Habitat cages. We cut the seams of the cage bottoms and joined them into one large cage liner with duct tape and super glue. Now we have a MidWest cage of triple the size! The cage is on cheap folding tables so we can easily interact with the pigs. They first lived in the same 3 cages connected by ramps with DIY ramp covers we made by sewing blankets.
Their bedding is soft paper bedding from Small Pet Select. We spot clean wet spots daily and do a full cage clean when the bedding starts to smell funky. They used to live on fleece blankets with towels and newspaper underneath. Back then we washed guinea pig fleece by hand in the sink. But since moving to a new apartment guinea pig laundry is less convenient so we switched to bedding. We also considered pine bedding but thought soft paper sounded more comfortable for their little feet!
The pigs prefer free stuff to actual guinea pig toys. They love to hide under packing paper. A DIY guinea pig house made from a cardboard box is a favorite hidey. They are not interested in most chew toys.
THEIR DIET
Their favorite hay is 3rd cutting timothy hay from Small Pet Select. But they get most excited about fresh grass. They gobble up Sherwood Pet Health guinea pig pellets.
They eat nearly any vegetable. The only thing rejected so far was zucchini. Their favorites are dandelion leaves, fennel, cilantro, parsley, banana leaves, kale, collard greens, kohlrabi, carrot tops and roots, beets, bell peppers, corn with the husk, cucumbers, and pumpkin. They go wild for homemade wheatgrass sprouts.
Their water bottle is a 26 ounce Living World Eco+ glass bottle. They drink it all in a day.

I purchased the IKEA mats that you suggested along with the open top and much bigger cage..and let me tell you, it's been a vast improvement for pigs and humans both!...❤...the cage is so much easier to clean and I bought an extra set of mats so I have one in use while the other is being washed...thank you for suggesting them -from Priscilla and Sugar's piggy Momma!...love the videos!!...❤❤
The fact that each folded towels were exactly one-third the room
Yeah, I tried pine bedding for about a month and went back to fleece! What a mess and took forever to clean! I make my own liners, but those bath mats are a great idea!
The fact that you guys waited patiently for the piggies to move out of the was before completely laying the fleece down
I've learned in order to do this; you really have to train your guinea pigs, to go to the bathroom in the right places.

I find it amazing they didnt drop little pellets on the first bathmat while you cleaned the other side of the cage.

Is it easier to clean the matt's or the fleece? Im using fleece and it gets so much food stuck on it. I was using hemp but I find it makes the pigs sneeze, so I stopped using it. I have 8 guinea pigs

I have 6 sows in a 24 sq ft pen. I love to sit in it while I clean because it’s on the floor. One of my younger sows Callie likes to crawl up my pant leg and crawl all over me while I clean up. I call her my little helper!

My piggy sadly passed away on June 5th, I was heartbroken I never thought that having a piggy would bring so much join into my life but he did. I miss him very much and gave him all the love that i could while he was here. If you want a Guinea pig i 100% recommend lol they are the best🥰. Rest in peace Gipson😇

I also 2mths ago stopped with the shredded bedding went with washable fleece blankets under the fleece I have desposible pet pee pads. Yes another cost but more absorbent. I change everything after 3dys they have their own piggie hamper i take outside to shake off throw out the pads. Wash the canvas bottom lol my almost entire livingroom is a huge piggie enclosure. 3 4×6 cages all 3 cages are connected by a huge low sided play area . Every morning I open all 3 big cages and they all come out to interact and play in the open area i leave their doors open so the have even more space almost my entire livingroom floor😊 I love them & spoil them
Wow, that is an epic guinea pig living room, very nice! :D I was thinking we might need an absorbent layer under the mats but these mats have turned out to be magical. They seem to evaporate the moisture before it can collect so nothing even manages to soak through. We wash them every 3 days too.

I had bedding for a while and I find it so much cheaper and easier to clean with Fleece liner and you will get your money worth in it .

This is nice for the piggies. I think it is probably more comfortable. I made my own huge fleece blankets for my two boys. I clean up doo doo constantly but they are happy. I wash the blanket every other day because they pee so much.
I also have to wash fleece blankets every other day and wonder how so many people can do it only twice a week... mine get smelly so much more often
The pigs do seem quite pleased! We are constantly picking up poops too but we are used to that part! We are back to washing 1 of the 3 sections every day again like when we had fleece before.

enjoyed watching this video. Bedding and cleaning is unfortunately part of the pleasure of our little piggies. I have tried everything - at present, use disposable absorbent litter - a few handfuls - covered loosely with light, dry hay. Then a furry slipper to perch on, plus water and food bowl. Put a small cover on top of cage so they feel more safe.
I've used bathmats, fleece blankets, as well as paper, but the constant washing was too much. Now i just tip the waste into a hole in the garden to become manure, and wash the cage before putting in new "floor".

When I first got my piglet I had bedding in the cage then fleece now pee pads. Honestly I love pee pads more because it’s easy to clean and disposable.
