- "Sophisticated Lady" is a jazz standard, composed as an instrumental in 1932 by Duke Ellington and Irving Mills, to which words were added by Mitchell Parish. The words met with approval from Ellington, who described them as "wonderful - but not entirely fitted to my original conception." That original conception was inspired by three of Ellington's grade school teachers. "They taught all winter and toured Europe in the summer. To me that spelled sophistication."
After Hours is a 1961 studio album by American jazz singer Sarah Vaughan. This was Vaughan's first album with just guitar and double bass accompaniment, it was followed by 1963's Sarah + 2 in a similar vein.
The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded After Hours three stars and said that "the emphasis throughout is exclusively on Sassy's magnificent voice. The program mostly sticks to ballads, with a couple of exceptions...and is a quiet and intimate affair, with Vaughan more subtle than she sometimes was. Despite a lightweight version of "My Favorite Things" that will not remind listeners of John Coltrane, this is an excellent if brief set (34-and-a-half minutes) with some fine jazz singing".
Sarah's accompanied by Mundell Lowe (guitar) and
George Duvivier (double bass). Pictured along with Sarah in video is Richard Davis. Recorded in RKO-Path Studio, New York City, July 18, 1961. (Roulette Records)
Smoking, drinking, never thinking of tomorrow, nonchalant
Diamonds shining, dancing, dining with some man in a restaurant
Is that all you really want?
No, no, no, no sophisticated lady
I know, you miss the love you lost long ago
And when nobody is nigh you cry
They say into your early life romance came
And in this heart of yours burned a flame
A flame that flickered one day and died away
Then with disillusion deep in your eyes
You learned that fools in love soon grow wise
The years have changed you, somehow, I see you now
Smoking, drinking, never thinking of tomorrow, nonchalant
Diamonds shining, dancing, dining with some man in a restaurant
Is that all you really want?
No, no, no, no sophisticated lady
I know, you miss the love you lost long ago
And when nobody is nigh you cry
You cry
You cry

I am only 94 and it is 2023. I saw Sarah perform once in BIrdland. She was and still is one of the greatest female voices ever!!
Sarah's interpretation of classics always gives new emphasis to the simplest statements. And as others note, her voice flows like warm honey. Exquisite!
I was 21 when I discovered this music on a double CD I'd bought; Ladies Of Jazz. I've loved this ever since
Ms Vaughn was an original artist who will always be remembered and alive in our hearts-
I haven't heard a better version. Flows like warm honey.
The Divine One, Sassy . . . Utter class, distinction, and sheer perfection. Ms. Sarah Vaughan truly was and always will be a "Sophisticated Lady" !
Word
Truly elegant, classy and clearly sophisticated. Oh how Wonderful. These Men don't feel this in our time & day. I would give anything 2 slow dance with a real man on this song many haven't heard it before.😍
Mr. Ellington, Miss Vaughan.........this is beyond words. I love music. Thank you,.
This is the best reindition of this song, that's out there! Sara is hard to beat! She has total control of her voice! The folks, now-a-days could take a lesson from her! This beats Rap all together! ❤
Beats rap? I wouldn’t compare this to any genre. As I wouldn’t compare any genre to this.
Nonetheless I agree; this to me is the best rendition of the song as well.
I have discovered Sarah when I was in my early twenties...She´been with me ever since
Same. I really started listening in my early teens and now I now I realize why I left in the first place. The truth is that I wasn't ready then. What a find Mrs. Sarah is.. so precious that you must prepare yourself to experience her glory.

I was a kid of 12 and I listened to a 10" 78 RPM of Sarah that belonged to an older cousin. At the same time, in the same pile of 78's, I discovered Billie Holiday. That was a very, very long time and I've never swerved in my devotion! Sarah song "Body and Soul," and Billie, "Yesterdays" by Jerome Kern.
Only Miss Vaughn gave the best to one of the best songs ever written. My opinion.
Wonderful👏🏾👏🏾❤️

Sarah Vaughn, Mundell Lowe (guitar), and George Duvivier (bass), just the three of them, doing what is, essentially, an American Art Song...
Can it get any better than this?
No.
Wow!
There was never another female singer as good!
When I listen to Sarah Warner's voice singing this interpretation I don't think there's another singer that could pass this version and a warm from that fantastic guitar player and bass player absolute killer version
How beautiful
Yes, my downfall, those sophisticated so-called ladies who sometimes weren't. The sweet sadnesses of life that focus more sharply in my memory as I listen.
Fools like us soon do grow wise
What a voice
the legend Sarah Vaughn!
Real female songstress, talented and classy 👌 👏 💯
Yehhh I love Sarah..RIP
I love her...
♥♥♥
LA DULZURA CANATANDO!!
This is not an easy song to sing by no means and as beautiful as this song is look how many great have even tried to attempt to sing it,so she does it well if not masterfully
Not words, just listen.
This version is so much more sophisticated then the version of fitzgerald ^^
I don't think so
They’re both great!
Sara Vaughn had to have been born with a classy voice! I haven't heard, even one song, that she has sung, that isn't plumb classy! She has a terrific range and has total control of her voice! She can jump two octives and be right on key. She has the ability to drag a note from phase to another and make it sound plumb classy. There's something about her voice that can enamer your being.
Absolute acme.......
Sassy leads with the bridge as an intro - is that how it was written? If so it's a great lead into the theme.
Yes the beginning was great, and l didn't know that
