La Défense is a major business district located 3 kilometres west of the city limits of Paris. Europe's largest purpose-built business district, covering 560 hectares (1,400 acres), for 180,000 daily workers, with 72 glass and steel buildings (of which 19 are completed skyscrapers), and 3,500,000 square metres (38,000,000 sq ft) of office space. Around its Grande Arche and esplanade ("le Parvis"), La Défense contains many of the Paris urban area's tallest high-rises. Les Quatre Temps, a large shopping mall in La Défense, has 220 stores, 48 restaurants and a 24-screen movie theatre.

I never expected to see so much modern architecture in Paris (12:20-16:40), but I have to admit some of the styles were pretty good. But i still like the older buildings better.
There are places in Paris with quite recent architecture but most of the video actually doesn't take place in Paris but in the famous district of La Défense which is in a neighbouring city .
It's a special district, and the only one with skyscrapers. It's not in Paris proper. Central Paris is still very old.
I think it has its own look and is pretty cool

We went to Defence few years back when we visited Paris. Such a contrast with the old city. Although, living in Toronto now, I much prefer the old charm and architecture of Paris.

I had no idea downtown Paris looked like that. It's stunning! Usually, the areas with the older and shorter buildings is all we see in movies and photos and shit. Not that those areas aren't beautiful too, but it's nice to see a different side to downtown Paris than just that. Thanks for taking us around.
This isn't really downtown Paris. It's La Défense a business district outside the city itself. Many cities in Europe do this, London has Canary Wharf, Amsterdam has Amsterdam Zuid, etc.

@@Prince077Aussie Australian cities are the same cities as in the United States and Canada. A city center with skyscrapers and houses all around, nothing beautiful. Especially since these cities are made for the car which is the opposite of European cities which on the contrary develop on public transport. I don't see what looks cleaner in these cities. To complete this beautiful video, it's important to specify that what is called "downtown" in this video, is not really located in Paris. This business district called "La Défense" is located in the western outskirts of Paris, mainly in the towns of "Nanterre" and "Puteaux". Like in many European cities, there's a desire to not mix (or as little as possible) historic architecture with modern architecture. However, because European cities are smaller than American ones, it's accepted that these business centers are part of the city they are supposed to serve. So, even in France we speak of the district of "La Défense" as being located in Paris. (It's not like it's located 60 km/40 miles away)
Just to be a little bit more specific, if French cities or communes are indeed smaller than American ones, it is rather untrue on a European level

@@thibault4211 France has 35,000 communes, while countries such as Germany, Italy or Spain only have only 8,000. So yeah, communes are territorially smaller units in France than in the rest of Europe, which doesn't mean that urban areas are smaller. From the commune of Paris to the business district of La Défense, you stay in a very densely built-up area, you don't really leave the "city" in that sense. In the US, a "city" generally refers to everything in the metropolitan area up to 50 km away from the center.

Thank you for making this video. I would not visit Paris to see this part of it. It could be anywhere in the world. The buildings are simply big, tall glass boxes devoid of style and charm. I noticed that there are few people walking around in this area, probably because it’s not built at a human scale. This is not the type of architecture that feels inviting. It is meant to impress but nothing more. Not Paris’ finest.
It's just that the pedestrian areas are above and separated from car traffic. You can notice the many footbridges.
The heart of La Defense is big pedestrian squares but you can't see it from a car.

I really wish I had gotten to see more of France than I did. My iPhone got stolen on the second day there, and having to deal with the Paris Apple Store employees just put me off the rest of the trip. They're bad enough in the States; the French ones were enough to drive a person homicidal. Which is a real shame, because I'm really a fan of European architecture, and Paris seems to have the best of it.
Hopefully my next trip there will be better. Quite frankly, it couldn't be worse...
But enough of me nattering on. I think I'll just enjoy the video. Another excellent job.

As a person who lived in Paris, it frustrates me that you call downtown what’s actually La Défense business district located in the SUBURBS of Courbevoie, Nanterre, Puteaux. SUBURBS my man, not downtown. It’s not even in Paris legally speaking. There are no and legally cannot be any skyscrapers in downtown Paris. Skyscrapers are prohibited within city limits of Paris.

À l’origine Paris c’est l’ile de la cité, puis des communes sont venues s’y ajouter progressivement ( saint germain, montparnasse, monmartre ... ) devenant ainsi "des quartiers ou arrondissements" et aujourd’hui dans la même continuité il y’a une très forte volonté politique d’y incorporer les communes périphériques, d’ou le projet du Grand Paris Express qui est ni plus ni moins que le lien ou raccord physique de ces communes, donc dans cette perspective le quartier de la défense comme tout le monde ou presque le nomme déjà y est totalement integré.
Quel commentaire de parisien, c'est Paris, point barre, l'air urbaine est bien comprise au sein de la ville, comme partout en France, putain de de citadin

there is one signal in Kandivali, the people living around in that area dump all the garbage on that signal, and animals flock there creating a ruckus and leading a traffic jam every day, it's been going on for 15 years and I can see. Well, the list will go on and on. Yes, there are a few good things, that's why we are living here, and with the hope that one-day things will improve. But calling it DUBAI - not yet. Abhi bahot time baaki hai. For that you need to spend a few months in both cities and cover all parts to make such a statement. Cheers
