    I learned French, Spanish and German when I was much younger -- in my teens and 20s. Now I am in my 60s. My language learning experience is very different now. The best advice I got from a good friend -- a piece of advice that I keep coming back to -- is "Don't compare yourselves with others and DON'T COMPARE YOURSELF to YOURSELF IN YOUR 20s."!!!

    This is all great advice. I've been trying to learn Greek for close to two decades now and it's endlessly frustrating to me that not only am I nowhere close to fluent, I still struggle to understand fairly basic conversations. Basically my proficiency is limited to a few situations that I have repeated many times in my visits to Greece. However, I am going to keep on trying because as slow as my progress has been, I have made progress after all! For instance, I rely less and less on the English subtitles when watching a video like this one. Your channel is excellent, thank you so much.

      Hi! Have you tried repetitive listening? What you do is: find a video that has content that you find interesting. Use the playback speed feature (the "star" button on the bottom, right side of the video) to slow it down. Listen to it at a slow speed as many times as needed until your ear gets familiar with the words. Then play it at a regular speed as many times as needed. Don't worry if you don't remember every word after all these exercises. What you don't pick up from one video, you will recognize it and assimilate it from a different video. The problem for us learners is not really how fast native speakers speak, but our unfamiliarity with the vocabulary. Best of luck.

      @@arizpe33 Thank you for your comment! I do listen to videos multiple times but I haven't tried slowing it down. My usual process when I'm in "study mode" is to watch the first time with English subtitles to get the vocabulary, then watch with Greek subtitles, then without subtitles. But honestly I am often so busy I just watch once with English subtitles. I should try watching on slow speed at least some of the time. I think it would also be helpful if I could be disciplined enough to write down the unknown vocab words in the video. I've been doing Duolinguo as well and every time I just go through the exercises as fast as possible but in the back of my mind I'm thinking "I would internalize this better if I stopped and wrote out the sentences..." yet I'm too lazy!! I'm guessing more effective language learners are actually using strategies like this. It's just hard motivating to do things that take more time when I don't really have a lot of extra time.

    It's so true that unfortunately it's very easy to buy into the idea that other people are just so much better than you at x, y and z. But as you said, you don't see the behind the scenes, you don't know anything about these people other than what they let you see and know. Everyone's different, and therefore, we all learn differently, at different paces and even with different resources that impact how fast or well we can acquire the skill/knowledge. Great reminder, Yiuli! Σ'ευχαριστώ πολυ! 😁

    Sophia! Excellent. I learnt Spanish in 4 months but in Spain in a seminary. Learning Greek as an older guy in England, working hard, is much slower. Siga Siga.

    I needed this reminder so bad. I try to learn Greek, but I am very slow at it and the idea of stopping crossed my mind a milion times, cause I was worried I can never be able to say or write anything in Greek as I wanted to. I've never been to Greece, I have no Greek friends nor relatives and sources to learn Greek from my native language are quite limited, but I just simply love your language and I enjoy learning it. I'd love to read that book as well now.
    Thank you for encouragement.🙏

      Είμαι σίγουρη ότι θα τα καταφέρετε. Σιγά σιγά και χωρίς να σταματήσετε, σε κάποιο καιρό θα μιλάτε πολύ ωραία Ελληνικά. Η αγάπη σας για τη γλώσσα είναι η μεγάλη σας δύναμη.

    Yes, there are interesting ideas. It is also true that you can learn faster if you have goals and know yourself bettee and how you learn efficiency a language. If you grew up with different languages, you also are eager to lean easier languages. The method is important. I knew someone who lwant German thanks to games. I learn a lot of vocabulary by reading and cooking. Your videos are also great! And dive into the culture is definitely the best way to learn: videos, books, TV shows, music, chatting. Nowadays, thanks to internet, it is much more easier!

    καλημερα, ευχαριστω πολυ για το αρθρο μου χαρηκα πολυ που το ακουσα. Έχω μια γραμματική ερώτηση γιατί Η άνθροποιε έχουμε την θαση να συγκρινουμε και οχι Οι άνθρωποι έχουν την τάση να συγκρινουν; Γεια σας Άρη

    • @AriannaPari
      @AriannaPari Рік тому

      Είναι σωστά και τα δύο. Όταν λέμε " έχουμε την τάση να συγκρίνουμε " σημαίνει ότι δεν εξαιρούμε τον εαυτό μας από τους άλλους και αυτό ακούγεται πιο ευγενικό. Επίσης, αναφέρεται σε μια γενική αλήθεια, ότι οι άνθρωποι γενικά, συνηθίζουν να συγκρίνουν τον εαυτό τους με άλλους. Αν πούμε "έχουν την τάση" σημαίνει ότι εμείς που μιλάμε, δεν συνηθίζουμε να συγκρίνουμε τον εαυτό μας με άλλους ανθρώπους ή ότι δεν το θεωρούμε σωστό. Καλημέρα!
