    you did an AWESOME job on the video, but one thing im going to add for anyone watching this is that if you have the 8.25 rear axle, you can use the back plate from a KJ jeep liberty and you dont have to dremel it out

      So what you're saying is this process is even easier on a KJ? Mine had an oopsie and needs a new axle, figured I'd put discs on it to save some headaches in the future since the shoes are 75% gone anyway.

      @@steveyoung6268 2002-2007 should work, I know a 2005 works perfect. Grab both side Ebrake cables up to where they connect from double to the single bracket.
      Grab the entire rearend of you can, basically everything can be transferred over.
      I think you do need to get longer bolts to hold on KJ backing plate.

    The reason your brakes were "malfunctioning" is because the spring on the gold "pin" in the rear shoe was not mounted properly to the adjuster. It should have been wrapped over the adjuster instead of hanging down. It pulls the adjuster up to the spreader and allows you to adjust the spreader by turning it and that spreads it apart. To close it, you actually apply pressure to the adjuster downward and then you can screw it together further and that closes the gap at the bottom between the two shoes. I learned this as I just did my rear brakes today. I may look at doing this in the future.
    Great video!

    • @gui577b
      @gui577b  9 років тому

      +sizzlinbacon21able It's actually all the way it's supposed to be (I did extensive research on this.) What was wrong is there was too much slack on the auto-adjust cable, which I suspect was either defective or just the wrong part. Regardless the discs have been totally maintenance-free since I put them in.

    I'm glad you mentioned the importance of the proportioning valve. I've seen plenty of rear disc brake swaps over the years. I'd say,probably half the time that never gets changed.

    I owned, a 2001 XJ, ( still miss it ), I used a rear 2005 Jeep Liberty KJ rear axle to use the disk brake parts, and is a throw, everything fits, the only thing is that you have to adapt the hand brake cables that goes from the wheels to the attach point under the drivers seat, no valve switch, and it improved braking lot, I also started to abuse in the downhills that I was scared to drive when being a drum braker...

    • @chereveco666
      @chereveco666 7 років тому

      From the 2005 Liberty used the brake components, bolted to the original XJ rear axle, no adaptations, you have to remove the shafts on both axles to be able to remove the hand brake plates, put back the shafts ( replace seals ), a the rest is just put everything together, remember that the only thing that you need to adapt, are the hand brake cables, from the wheels to the base that is below the drivers seat, underneath the Cherokee.
      Good Luck

    I can tell in the video the guide plate for the brake ebrake cable is not set in the hole that the spring goes to.
    You need to press in on the spring and the plate with your left hand while forcing the spring on with a flathead.
    You will know if you did it right because that plate will not move at all and will barely turn if you pry on it. The gap is actually about the same size as the cable and I had to shove the cable through with a flathead.

    I have the same exact issue with the auto adjusters on mine. The rear brakes back off after a few miles. The issue is - you do not have the correct spring for the plate; the spring is supposed to hold the plate in the correct spot, which will keep tension on the auto adjuster cable.
    It's not something YOU did wrong. I have gone through 4 or 5 sets of hardware in the last few years, rebuilt the stupid things numerous times. NOT A SINGLE SET of springs has the right spring.

    He has more travel in his jeep because the proportioning valve is not for a Cherokee Braking System they sell adjustable valves to do this. My advise leave your drums in place. Who wants to feel 7 inches of travel before braking. Also you have a bend in the brake line drivers side rear it's bent right were the spring ends on the brake line.very small hole in the line and you cut off half the flow to that caliber. Hack Job 101 BUY THE ADJUSTABLE PROPORSHIONING VALVE AND SET IT RIGHT TO BRING YOUR BRAKE PEDDLE FROM TRAVELING SO MUCH.

      Skyler Tremethick sorry, but no.. i am not sure what wheel studs are needed and in this video it appears that he did not replace the whole valve assembly, just the internal valve, spring, and cap.
      I ended up swapping in a Ford 8.8 with disk brakes, deleted the abs system entirely and had to swap the entire proportioning valve out for one from a Cherokee with OUT abs. I Had to swap out my proportioning valve for the non-abs version because the abs version has 4 lines out to go to abs pump and my new valve only had 3 (2front 1 rear)
      I ended up going to ford 8.8, 4.88 gears, lockers front and rear, 5.5 lift, frame stiffeners, homemade bumpers, sliders, and more.
      I just could not put that much work into a Dana35. But probably worth the effort if u have the Chrysler 8.25 or Dana44

    Do you know if replacing emergency brake from grand Cherokee would work ? (Instead of cutting, using clamps etc)

      I think the driver's side will work, but the pass side won't. I've also heard of people simply cutting off the ends and welding them to the XJ cables.

    your brake pads in the video look to be on back words the large Shoe in the back should be in the front that looks to be the Primary shoe so if you were having troubles with stopping that would be it. just saying in the Video it look that way.

    I know this is an old video, what kind of wheel studs did you use? Also what conversion kit was this?

    • @cptkirk222
      @cptkirk222 4 роки тому +1

      You can use the axles off ATJ Wrangler with rear disks. It's not a kit your Holand parts from other jeeps

    Could you put up the new bolt sizes and nut size for the backing plate to the axle, as well as the new stud sizes for the ZJ? If you could also put up where you got that U style bolt to hold the e-brake line, that would be awesome! Thanks!

    you said ZJ not CJ wheel studs, right?

    How long were the studs you use and where did you get them?

    • @gui577b
      @gui577b  9 років тому

      I got them at a local autoparts store. They were $2 each. I just walked in and asked for the studs from a 1998 Grand Cherokee with ABS.

    Is there any reason that the parking brake cannot be deleted totally? Im about to do this swap on my 89 XJ and I dont want any of the springs and garbage in there, just the disc brakes. Thanks in advance

      You don't technically need it as long as you don't want the parking brake. Will not pass any sort of inspection though

      +Robert Lee I've done this conversion, I would recommend using the parking brake, the parts don't get in the way like the original drum parts and the parking brake works great. Just my two cents.

    • @bagelbytes69420
      @bagelbytes69420 9 років тому

      +Robert Lee If youre parking you should use the parking brake as in an automatic transmission, there is only a tiny tooth securing the transmission in "Park". This can wear away and cause the car to roll when the e-brake isnt used. And obviously it's useful in a manual too.

      all cars by federal law have to have emergency or parking brake. if you do not have an emergency or parking brake it is against the law to have the vehicle on the road

      I now see your is an 8.25. I'll have to look into the brake booster set up, I think mine used an older system with reservoir and may not work
