The ending of this episode is definitely one of my favorites, to see how the relationships between Subaru, Felis, and Julius have changed over the last few episodes and how emotionally difficult it is to kill subaru is heartbreaking but sticks with you

The possession is unlikely to have to do with touching the Gospel since Petelgeuse actually possessed Subaru in episode 18 right before Puck froze him to death (while Subaru laughs maniacally). I suspect it has more to do with Subaru's connection to the Witch and Geuse being drawn to his witch scent after death.

Off the top of my head: - Puck saying Subaru has a humongous, constipated, magic gate (The first time he uses Shamac). Untapped potential? - Instantly making friends with a *Black* Dragon (Patrasche), known to be the most unruly and untrusting of the dragon tames. Wasn't there a black dragon behind the waterfall in the fairy tale book? 🤔 - Beetelgeuse immediately thinking Subaru is Pride. - Subaru not being affected by the Whale's mind wipe effect. (Puck called the whale Gluttony before he freezes subaru for the 3rd time) - Subaru's ability to see the (Sloth) Unseen hand after experiencing it once. (Wilhelm couldn't see it, but he could see the water spray forming around the Unseen Hand like an invisible tube, as shown in the scene. So Subaru is still the only human that can truly see Unseen Hand) - Subaru's extreme sensitivity to spirit arts, and his ability to become friends with them almost instantly. Might be more I'm forgetting, but based on what we've seen up to now, Subaru is a wellspring of seemingly hidden potential. Betelgeuse just then realized what Subaru's body can really do.
For Subaru's Gate, I always just assumed that was because Subaru came from a world where magic doesn't exist/isn't used, so his Gate went 17 years with zero usage. It'd be interesting if you're right about him being a powerful magic user in the future, but so far the author has stuck to Return by Death being the only strong ability at his disposal. Regarding the fairytale with the Dragon, I'm not sure that's the same species as Ground/Earth Dragons like Patrasche (the Japanese words don't use the same "Dragon" kanji). I also don't think it's color was mentioned.

The transition at the end with Emilia feeling something was off and looking into the forest where Subaru was wrapped the episode up brilliantly. Crazy ep definitely

I finished the second season yesterday, which had much more character development and depth in this universe. Roswaal had multi-colored orbs above his hands in the loop where Rem was cursed and he confronted Beatrice. It implies that he can use magic of different elements, however I don't think those were Spirits like with Julius.
Feris has the title of Water, as the person most skilled with water magic but he can't use offensive magic like Rem does with conjuring ice. But he can boil the water in a persons body which is what he did to Subaru

The anime kinda missed it, but when Felis/Felix put Subaru down after he got posessed, that cat person made the mana on Subaru body literally explodes and permanently disabled him from the neck down. Kinda gruesome actually.

Emilia has her magical hooded cloak on during Memory Snow. So if the villagers didn't know that the mansion harbored a half-elf until the Royal Selection candidates were announced, it's not inconsistent.

I don't know about voice actors from other countries, but Japanese voice actors are wonderful. Voice actors are professionals who make a living by getting paid for it. I've heard that the English version of Fullmetal Alchemist is good, so I guess the voice actors in charge of the English version of Fullmetal Alchemist are all quite talented. Also, the correct pronunciation of the first "ju" in julius is "Yu". I'd like you both to see this...
Betel juice is a spirit, & remember how Julius says he might be more compatible with spirits? That's how combined with his witch affinity he gets possessed. Very hard to get in anime from this ep until 2nd half of s2. So not the book, it's something else again revealed later.
I don't think it is because of the book that made Betelgeuse possess Subaru. The small furry warrior commander also touched the book and surely Betelgeuse would possess that to gain a powerful body.

This is one of the most tragic death in re zero anime at least we were so close to realtivly happy ending were the villagers accepted emilia she would have had some confidence julious and subaru were on decent terms it would be been a nice ending but nothing is every happy in this show
