Used to live right near the square. I would ride my bike down to the antique stores and spend all of my waitressing money on little Knick knacks. I would carry them home in my little bicycle basket. That was back in 2009-2014. Glad to see it’s still there. There used to be a little tea shop there too called tealicious that I would go and drink tea and eat little sandwiches with my grandma. I’ve long since moved away and don’t plan to come back but I do miss the charm of burnet every once in a while.
My Grandfather B.F. Reed was from Burnet. I was born in 1953 and some of my most cherished memories came from weekends with Pa Pa. Spent many a week there during summer vacation. Walked that square many a time.
The monuments are very necessary for future generations. I just found a monument in my home state of North Carolina that my 4 times great grandfather’s name was on. What a thrill it was to see it. I found it via Ancestry, as I’ve been in Texas 45 years now. I turned 74 yesterday, and having monuments and history books has been such a blessing to me in connecting my heritage. I found I could join the Daughters of the American Revolution in North Carolina. Quite a neat thing!
I love the old courthouse squares, most business’s haven’t survived (Including mine) due to bypass highways taking all the traffic away from downtowns. It is so sad, progress “or is it”. Speeds life up by taking our lives away from these kinds of places. My town where my business was a lot of the younger that actually wanted to work moved into the cities to get higher paying jobs.... to only pay higher rent ect.. it’s like a cat that chases his tail does he get anywhere? I might argue the point.? They go to work come home eat go back to work, pay car payments never pay them off... I have a son on that treadmill... I closed my business live out in the country stay off the treadmill’s Don’t buy a new truck EVER now.. Raise my cows only go into town once a month! Am I a hermit? Been called that once or twice..😳 It’s just so sad that society has left behind a way of life only to live like a bunch of rats on treadmills. I do leave couple times a year to get out and look around and see sights, only to be glad to come back and see my cows!😊🐮 I do enjoy the sights but not so much some of the crazy people out there. The highways seem to be full of them. I try to go backroads as much as I can, but sometimes I have to get out on highways like when I go to Big Bend.. I-10 is a doozy they drive sooo fast, And even if I’m in the passing lane they look at me strange😳... maybe because I don’t get out as much as they do. What is that speed limit 80 or 90?? I forget???😳😳😳 Anyway enjoyed today’s video Ready for you to go tripping Rusty 👍🏻👋🏼🐮🐕
rosey suarez your so right Rosey❤️ How long can America go on before it all just comes to a screeching ✋ stop. And someone says nope I’m not going to do this no more.. just step away, that’s all you got to do, we don’t need all the stuff.. get your kids outside, spend less... live smaller.
I lived there back in 1992 for only one year. That's the same year they built the train station. My dad owned a Mexican restaurant called tortilla sunrise. It was such a cool pace very small and a true Texas town.
Rusty, in the 1700's Oliver Goldsmith a famous Irish poet, wrote a well known poem called The Deserted Village. He must have had downtown Burnet on a Sunday morning in mind. I love your slices of American life. Keep it up.
maybe I missed it, but isn't there a huge rock that weighs about a ton along with a professionally-made sign that says Don't steal This Rock there's another one out back that you can have!
I loved this video Rusty! It must be fun to just take off and go where you want any time you want and do whatever you want to do. I wish I was retired, I’d come walk with you! 🙂
I give you credit Rusty! Nice to see you doing what you do. People get older and think they should just lay around, nope not me, and obviously not you! Have a great day. Keep the videos coming
As of September 2022, about 6 businesses have left the square, and more have come back in. and overall there is more growth. It's too close to Austin to die out.
Such a beautiful little town! Breaks my heart when I see towns like this dying. We've got lots of cute but dying towns here in rural Pennsylvania too. Thanks for sharing so many fun local videos of your area.
Burnet isn't dying. Its just not growing much. Its 60 miles from Austin. Eventually TX 29 will be improved and commuters to far north Austin will settle in Burnet and people will say the boom ruined the town. Burnet's got a Whataburger. No town with a Whataburger is dying - open 24 hours. Just to the west is Buchanan Lake, a beautiful area to retire.
@@JamieMakin Burnet is about 50 miles from Fredericksburg - no direct route so the drive is further. Fredericksburg has demographics similar the Sante Fe NM whereas Burnet is more affordable. Burnet isn't the tourist destination but you could commute to northwest Austin - route 29 is hilly and windy through the hills. Marble Falls just 10 miles to the south on U.S. 281, has a bit more amenities and a lakefront - both are similar sized towns. Marble Falls has a Tractor Supply, Walmart, Starbucks, even a Harbor Freight. Between the two towns there is pretty much anything most people might need without Austin costs
@@timothykeith1367 it would be cool to live outside of Austin near the Circuit of the Americas since I'm an IndyCar and F1 fan. I've been having a tough time finding work in rural PA, so I'm toying with the idea relocating to somewhere with more opportunities. I'd rather live outside of a big city instead of inside it.
@@JamieMakin Central Texas is awesome. I personally want to stay away from I-35 as that can be super congested, but U.S. 281 runs parallel about an hour to the west through the hill country and is scenic, has few big trucks from San Antonio to Ft. Worth, whereas I-35 can turn into a parking lot in the New Braunfels-Austin-Georgetown area. When I-35 was constructed Austin was a smaller city and never received a loop or alternative freeway. You must drive through the heart of Austin. In recent years the TX 130 tollway was built, but its not nearly enough. By Texas standards, Austin housing near popular locations can be spendy. Tesla is building in what I had called the "trailer park" part of Austin, so that's likely to become spendy as well. Bastrop to the northeast and Hutto - these areas are nice, as is San Marcos, Buda and Kyle. But the traffic on I-35!! I believe I-35 will be double-decked or even triple-decked in coming years as it would be too costly to make it wider. You'll like Central Texas. Its hot and more humid in the summer than many might expect, but the winters are great.
Having a bad day Tim? Rusty has never claimed to be a comedian. This is his channel and he can do anything he wants to do. Nuf-said. Take a deep breath and enjoy life Tim.

Thanks for the tour Rusty. Love history! I didn’t realize Texas was so rich with history, and small towns that are so great.
Was here during the bluebonnet season on the burnet train from Austin back in 2009. Loved it.
Heard you speak of Burnet, TX many times. Glad we got a tour of the downtown area. Liked camping/traveling tips video too.

I miss small town America before Walmart moved in and killed it. That's progress for ya'
Very sad the whole thing. Should not have been allowed to happen. Destroying small towns and communities. Such a shame.
@@bosse641 I think the closest Walmart to Burnet is in Marble Falls 13 miles away
Thanks for the walk through MID WESTERN MAYBERRY !! ...... I for one SURE enjoyed it since I live in bustling Myrtle Beach SC

On the last weekend of March, Dripping Springs now hosts annual Dark Sky festivals drawing thousands of ‘’astro-tourists.’’
