@Dagoth_Ur_1 To be honest it most likely started the horror game genre. Silent Hill remade and expanded on psychological horror and then of course Resident Evil in practically invented the survival horror genre.
The story has psychological elements, but Silent Hill has always been more of an Action Horror game as far as mechanics go. Lot's of shooting and swinging blunt objects in these games, looks like even more so in the remake of SH2.

I bought that magazine a little later and it had a disc with demos of PS1 horror games. Tried the Silent Hill demo and it scared the hell out of me. Up until then Resident Evil had spooked me but not quite like this. This was different. Psychological Horror they called it. I was in my twenties and it still gave me a truly uneasy feeling playing it late at night.

Because of aiming for realism, games are less creative. Games like RE or Silent Hill had puzzles and traps that didn't make sense, I mean who would put a Jill sandwich maker in a mansion? Or count the limbs? Piano puzzle? It is kinda dumb but for a video game, they work so well, and were very satisfying to solve. I prefer these games. New games are restricted by "realism"...

jorje3333 silent Hill 2 was kinda original tho and 3 was very different so I'd say 1990-2003 was the years were people were using new technologies to bring back old ideas to life.
this game was made before i was even born; my uncle was a huge video game junkie and saved every single console he had including the video games/copies. I remember asking to play one of his consoles and immediately he hooked it up, popping silent hill in after i asked for the scariest game he had. silent hill was the first game i had ever payed, and being as little as i was i never really understood it. but, the older i got and the more i replayed it the more i began to understand. to this day there's still nothing i've played (yet) that has changed my mind on the fact that this game is one of the most articulately crafted, depressing, terrifying, and cinematic experiences all at once. every now and again i'll revisit it, and every single time there's something new that i hadn't noticed in the game before, or something that clicks in my head; Like characters, their growth, the choices you can make, and really understanding and evaluating actions and emotions. there's an unmistakable humanity in this game that i wish more people today would recognize. in general i just wish more people would see silent hill for everything that it is and potentially could be. i still have hope for this series, even if konami had flushed it so far from redemption in such little time. it breaks my heart to see that a lot of what they've tried doing with silent hill has fallen through and ultimately reduced to a playable trailer and a fucking pachinko machine.
silent hill team has gone after the 4. its finish since long time my friend :) i played the first one when i was 10. in 2022 things die faster. i said good bye since long time to silent hill. and infinite thank you, to konami, to created, this divine story and thank you to God to have luck to know this. after it its ... just money :p and money destroy all
My all-time favorite horror game. The music, atmosphere, literally everything about this game was horror magic. Really hope it gets a remake now that SH2 is getting one.
when i see this trailer back in 1998,this song this tralier, this game make me love it,tanks for all Team silent!! Akira yamaoka...i whill never forget how this game make me feel. One of the best games ever made and one of the best OST made,i hope one day konami released a remake of it
Best years of my life ever. All my family was alive and healthy living their best life. Game play provided me with a printable map and UA-cam would give me pointers. Such a simple and refreshing Renaissance area we had back then
Weird to think that when this video was uploaded, SH1 was only 7 years old, SH4 was the latest game and the movie had just come out. This must've been the last time the series was in a good place.
sillouttepoet if you can call downpour and homecoming silent hill games you are right but you can't because they are crap so he is right, origins in something weird and remake is not even a remake for the first silent hill... so..
Geno D'Arco just because they got the "silent hill" name on them doesnt mean they are silent hill games at all, konami is milking the franchise, after 4 you cant call them silent hill anymore just milking games with the name stamped on them, just like resident evil after remake and zero, yes 4 was a good game but not a good resident evil one.
big change happened from 1 to 2. some good.. Def graphics increase but the bad graphics in the 1st made it even better to me. As a kids this left scars that i love (sounds disturbingly weird) SH2 went for a more rustic old look. While SH1 was gorey blood. bodies held to the walls with barbed wire. God that school in SH1, the memories. SH2 was a masterpiece but the memories for me are with SH1
Not sure if they were inspired by stephen kings novella "The Mist". There is even a movie with Thomas Jane. It looks like this game series was heavily inspired by that story but I could be wrong
Timur Hodzic I know im a year late, but originally the reason they did the fog was because they had to cover up the short render distance, due to the limitations of the PS1 hardware.
I hope you’re still playing today! I’m thinking of picking it up for nostalgia, I watched my grandfather play when I was little, and I’d love to show him it now that his memory is gone!
I was there at E3 back in in 1998. It was the last time they held it in Atlanta. I stood in the Konami booth and watched this trailer for seven or eight times straight, completely blown away. It's amazing how easily we were impressed back then, but the game still rules.
I saw this trailer on a PS1 demo disk when I was about 6 and it scared the shit out of me. Because of that this game to me is the scariest of them all haha!

You can find them (grey child) only in the North American version of the game. Japan and Europe have changed them to "mumblers" a less little kid looking type of monster.
***** also the Grey child of this trailer are the beta version, even if you play the final american version their design is not the same. they have no face and their color is grey/green instead of peach
JoJo Makara Yeah, but at least I like the version where they laugh "hohoho", hahaha. It's more funny. The ones from the japanese version look like pokemons hahaa.
My First Silent Hill game was Shattered Memories played on Nintendo Wii, i never forget that Experience and Enjoyments what a Chill Days playing at night best memories i have 😢😮😊
best horror game, PERIOD! just played through this game again like 3 months ago, took me back to when i was about 13 or 14 shittin my pants at night. lol good times.
This trailer is actually very well done. At first I wasn't digging the music choice, but after realizing the contents of the game, the music does a great job of masking what you are in for. It looks like a mystery/horror game at first glance, but going by this trailer, you'd have no idea this would be one of the scariest games you'd ever play.
Back then, this game took the boundaries of what could be done in a game to the limit. Not only on graphics but on the type of story. I could see this game getting hate and censorship because of those kids monsters
Summer of 98' I put the demo CD in my PlayStation to watch the trailer, at the same time a friend of mine he was passing in a front of my house so the next day we meet and told me that my playing in guitar was awesome, I never had a guitar or any relation to music.
I got a PS1 for Christmas around the time Silent Hill was due to be released. I also got a subscription to Official PlayStation Magazine. On Christmas Day, I popped the demo disc of the first issue I had into the console and fired up the first trailer. It was this one. It was immediately the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Watching it now it's very basic. Random clips of FMVs and gameplay. But that line 'Silent Hill... will turn into Hell' still gets me.
I saw this trailer on PS Demo Disc around 1998-99, being 9 year old. It broke me, because being 34 yo now, I often come back to this town: either by drawing my own monsters or figuring out what new installments in the series could be about.
La calidad de este vídeojuego es extraordinario en todo sentido y apartado, actualmente sigue siendo muy disfrutable y aterrador como el primer día... aún así espero un Remake porque Harry se lo merece (muchísimo más que James de hecho). I can't believe it has been 15 years to this date since it's release. One of my favorite series of all time!
Remember having a disc i got with the Playstation UK magazine that had 6 or 7 trailers on and one of them being this! Can't remember what other trailers were on there i only cared about this one as the song made the hair on my arms stand up, needless to say i played Silent Hill at launch as well as the rest.
When this was uploaded the game was barely 7 years old. It was relatively a new game. And look at us now. 25 years later. and it feels only yesterday i have played it in 2001 as a kid. well i didnt play it, too scared, my older friend did. still, memorable experience.
I remember this game being the one that scared me enough I didn't want to play it anymore. Then I got curious about how it ends. That's the mark of a great writer.
And this is how the legend started!! That split head at the end was epic, considering that i'm an "everyman" just like Harry i can not imagine myself fighting with a creature like that.
What's really interesting here is the higher quality, high frame rate cutscene footage. Plus a lot of pre-rendered cinematics not included in the final game. Thanks for sharing!
E3 1998: the world was introduced to Silent Hill. Gamescom 2014: the world was re-introduced to Silent Hill. Welcome back, Silent Hill. We've missed you.
REChronic54 It won't be bad, that's for sure. Kojima wouldn't make a game that has bad storytelling for one, and the team he has is pretty good at making good games for two. Not sure it will be a _proper_ Silent Hill game though. Kojima may be good at telling stories but whether he really understands how to make a SH game is another question. Time will show.
Its kinda cool seeing a beta version of this game, seeing how they changed it later, like the kid monster in the bathroom at daytime (which never happens) and the little fleshy versons of the little squeaking ghosts that trip over and then disappear.
As a newer fan, even I am upset by the cancellation of Silent Hills. The game could have brought the franchise back to its roots and given us true terror, which is exactly what it needs nowadays. This game had stood the test of time, and I only wish Konami were aware just how much the masterpiece they threw away was really gonna be worth

jorje3333 silent Hill 2 was kinda original tho and 3 was very different so I'd say 1990-2003 was the years were people were using new technologies to bring back old ideas to life.
+Dreadnought you miss Warcraft 3
After all these years I need to return to this masterpiece once again
Today is January 31 of 2014, Happy 15th Anniversary Silent Hill!
And now it’s nearly 30th jan 2021 and this game still holds a special place in my heart

Long to turn 26 in a few months, hope you're doing well Signoxr
November 2024. We finally got the remake we deserved for SH2.
Someone in 2024?
this game was made before i was even born; my uncle was a huge video game junkie and saved every single console he had including the video games/copies. I remember asking to play one of his consoles and immediately he hooked it up, popping silent hill in after i asked for the scariest game he had.
silent hill was the first game i had ever payed, and being as little as i was i never really understood it. but, the older i got and the more i replayed it the more i began to understand. to this day there's still nothing i've played (yet) that has changed my mind on the fact that this game is one of the most articulately crafted, depressing, terrifying, and cinematic experiences all at once.
every now and again i'll revisit it, and every single time there's something new that i hadn't noticed in the game before, or something that clicks in my head; Like characters, their growth, the choices you can make, and really understanding and evaluating actions and emotions.
there's an unmistakable humanity in this game that i wish more people today would recognize. in general i just wish more people would see silent hill for everything that it is and potentially could be.
i still have hope for this series, even if konami had flushed it so far from redemption in such little time. it breaks my heart to see that a lot of what they've tried doing with silent hill has fallen through and ultimately reduced to a playable trailer and a fucking pachinko machine.
silent hill team has gone after the 4. its finish since long time my friend :) i played the first one when i was 10. in 2022 things die faster. i said good bye since long time to silent hill. and infinite thank you, to konami, to created, this divine story and thank you to God to have luck to know this. after it its ... just money :p and money destroy all
Still the scariest game I ever fuckin played it was so scary I played this during the day n was still shook
Same here, it left me with some degree of PTSD
We SH1 players all are traumatised, our whole generation 😂 You can literally see the terror in our faces still 😜
It's a very weird feeling knowing that this was uploaded just seven years after the first game came out.
Him waking up violently on the bench is so iconic.
My all-time favorite horror game. The music, atmosphere, literally everything about this game was horror magic. Really hope it gets a remake now that SH2 is getting one.
reading Lisa's lips in that little confrontation with Kauffman she looks like she's saying "Let..Me Bo ... You Pro Bitch"
when i see this trailer back in 1998,this song this tralier, this game make me love it,tanks for all Team silent!!
Such a simple and refreshing Renaissance area we had back then
Silent Hill is what brought me and my ex fiancee together
So, in a way, we met in the town 😁
Weird to think that when this video was uploaded, SH1 was only 7 years old, SH4 was the latest game and the movie had just come out. This must've been the last time the series was in a good place.
Back when trailers actually showed the real game
its no equally, its different, cutscenes in this trailer have more resolution
It's literally mostly pre-rendered cutscenes and just a bit of gameplay interspersed here and there.
Games still do that retard, plus this game is mostly showing cutscenes as most games do
One of my favorite series ever made. Shame they stopped making Silent Hill games after 4.
No they didn't
sillouttepoet
if you can call downpour and homecoming silent hill games you are right but you can't because they are crap so he is right, origins in something weird and remake is not even a remake for the first silent hill... so..
Stay awhile and listen
This guy gets it.
sillouttepoet No. You misunderstood him. He meant they stopped making SILENT HILL games after 4.
Geno D'Arco
just because they got the "silent hill" name on them doesnt mean they are silent hill games at all, konami is milking the franchise, after 4 you cant call them silent hill anymore just milking games with the name stamped on them, just like resident evil after remake and zero, yes 4 was a good game but not a good resident evil one.
Stephen King Would Love this Game if he was a Gamer
he'd probably love SH2 even more
big change happened from 1 to 2.
He wouldn't, he would try to sue the devs
Timur Hodzic I know im a year late, but originally the reason they did the fog was because they had to cover up the short render distance, due to the limitations of the PS1 hardware.
man this game never gets old i ve beaten it like 45 times and it still so much fun to replay it
I hope you’re still playing today! I’m thinking of picking it up for nostalgia, I watched my grandfather play when I was little, and I’d love to show him it now that his memory is gone!
@@FionnyboCampbello i still do hahah
I'm trying to get it now. Remember when it came out but never played it
Thinking of trying it for the first time, can I get it on PC?

RE and Silent Hill 90s era are legit terrifying
I was there at E3 back in in 1998. It was the last time they held it in Atlanta. I stood in the Konami booth and watched this trailer for seven or eight times straight, completely blown away. It's amazing how easily we were impressed back then, but the game still rules.
take me back for good, listening to the old ost from both 1 and 2 has been unbelievable and i never thought id be excited over this again
I saw this trailer on a PS1 demo disk when I was about 6 and it scared the shit out of me.
Because of that this game to me is the scariest of them all haha!
I still remember seeing this trailer in those days. Good days for gameplay and narrative experimentations.
I was 27 when this video was released on a demo disc. Been a SH fan ever since. Now 48
I wonder where Team Silent is today, and if they'd ever consider making another one of these amazing games.. I actually wanna cry. I'm not old enough to remember these games coming out but after playing them I'm so so so incredibly sad there aren't any more Team Silent games
@@dadbodsandcosplay I know and am very excited! I hope they are good! I was referencing the original team silent though, the specific people who made the first game. I know some of the original people involved are working within the new projects, but not sure if all are involved. I still wonder where and what projects they're working on today compared to all the way back when the first Silent Hill was being developed
2023 and I still play it on my Old PS1
me too
Forever a timeless classic and for me at least, still the scariest game ever made
the game that my grand parents gave me purchased i played with it real good he's been used so well i miss them so much thank you for giving me this awesome game full of childhood memories...
DID YOU SAY GRANDPARENTS? OMG I FEEL SO OLD NOW
This game needs a remake to compete with Re2 remake, to the fact that silent hill and resident evil had good competition since ps1 to ps2 era.
Aqui em 2023 mesmo depois de anos e esse jogo continua sendo uma obra de arte dos jogos de terror.
Same
Remember watching this video a million times on my demo disc that came with my Playstation...

That was the original design for those little "kids". I'll download the japanse 1.0 version to see if this is in the game.
You can find them (grey child) only in the North American version of the game. Japan and Europe have changed them to "mumblers" a less little kid looking type of monster.
Pixeljunker Oh, I see. Thanks.
***** also the Grey child of this trailer are the beta version, even if you play the final american version their design is not the same. they have no face and their color is grey/green instead of peach
JoJo Makara
Yeah, but at least I like the version where they laugh "hohoho", hahaha. It's more funny. The ones from the japanese version look like pokemons hahaa.
They show up in the PSOne Classics version on the PSN
This one definitely deserves a remake!
Happy 17th Birthday Silent Hill.!!!!! No a simple game. a ARTWORK game!!!!!
So cool to see for the first time the cutscenes in 50 or 60 fps in a video from 15 years ago. I really LOVE this game.
Playing it for the first time ony vita after playing some of the latee titles, really diggin it so far
Absolute Classic it scared the hell out of me and sending chill down my spine
I guess the algorithm knows where I am mentally.
The trailer still gives me chills in 2020.
This masterpiece is still scary to play to this day. A true classic
This was was at the time maybe like Death Stranding is now.
No one knows what really to expect, but it'll probably be amazing.
I was literally born in the same year and on the same day as this video
Lol

I remember playing this game as a teenager and being both thrilled and terrified at the same time, for a while I considered Resident Evil too be the scariest games until Silent Hill came along. I can't believe it has been 15 years to this date since it's release. One of my favorite series of all time!
This is oddly high quality for something uploaded in 2006.
Silent Hill... We've missed you :(
Remember having a disc i got with the Playstation UK magazine that had 6 or 7 trailers on and one of them being this! Can't remember what other trailers were on there i only cared about this one as the song made the hair on my arms stand up, needless to say i played Silent Hill at launch as well as the rest.
Such a masterpiece
Still to this day one of the best games ever made. I can remember the day I got it
Indeed and the most loved.
0:19 That´s a tall ladder... =)
When this was uploaded the game was barely 7 years old. It was relatively a new game. And look at us now. 25 years later. and it feels only yesterday i have played it in 2001 as a kid. well i didnt play it, too scared, my older friend did. still, memorable experience.
When I bought ps1 this game was the first game I played with, never forget the scary moments in it! Such a masterpiece
I remember this game being the one that scared me enough I didn't want to play it anymore. Then I got curious about how it ends. That's the mark of a great writer.
_"What is happening to Silent Hill ?"_
man...
And this is how the legend started!!
That split head at the end was epic, considering that i'm an "everyman" just like Harry i can not imagine myself fighting with a creature like that.
So loved watching this on my demo disc back in the day. Thanks for sharing.
What's really interesting here is the higher quality, high frame rate cutscene footage. Plus a lot of pre-rendered cinematics not included in the final game. Thanks for sharing!
2:43 SCARED THE HELL OUTTA ME WHEN I WAS A KID!!!
The name of the track is "She" for anyone curious.
thanks
Nostalgia is the best and worst feeling
I have never played silent hill 1 in my play station 1 and after 20 years I am playing right now for the first time.
How was it?
Since I first played SH2 in 2002, my heads never left Silent Hill....
Beautiful. :')
Hi body😊

E3 1998: the world was introduced to Silent Hill.
Gamescom 2014: the world was re-introduced to Silent Hill.
Welcome back, Silent Hill. We've missed you.
do you think it'll be good?
REChronic54
It won't be bad, that's for sure. Kojima wouldn't make a game that has bad storytelling for one, and the team he has is pretty good at making good games for two. Not sure it will be a _proper_ Silent Hill game though. Kojima may be good at telling stories but whether he really understands how to make a SH game is another question. Time will show.
spookycookies to bad it will never come out
seth salamone yea, I received an update from one of the websites. I wonder what happened
REChronic54 Konami happened
Wow, this vid is 4 days older then me, crazy to think UA-cam was around so early.
Its kinda cool seeing a beta version of this game, seeing how they changed it later, like the kid monster in the bathroom at daytime (which never happens) and the little fleshy versons of the little squeaking ghosts that trip over and then disappear.
Damn 18 years ago .i feel old
A trailer to a legendary game, who would've have known at that time :")
Anybody 2024 watching this relic? I'd almost crying 😲
Silent hill 1 was one of the best games I've ever played....never gonna be duplicated
Jugué éste Silent Hill hace más de diez años y hasta el día de hoy sigo arrepentido… terribles recuerdos TT_TT
17 years later and this masterpiece pops up in my recommendations, thanks UA-cam ❤
I'm beggining to playing this game. I'm scared.
Wow, this is SO good and impressive for 1998!!
Out of 200 games I’ve played. This is my number 1 favorite game.
