- I already received a lot of comments for my LIDL glider conversion into a flying wing, the LIDL Devil. In this video I want to give you tips and tricks and answer some of your questions.

Specs:
Motor: Graupner Ultra 2812 1200KV brushless Motor CW
ESC - Graupner Brushless Control + T 18 XT-60
Battery - 3S / 1600 mAh
Servos - Emax ES08D II
Prop - 9x5
Weight - 400g
Top Speed - 150km/h (GPS)
Flight time - approx. 6-7 min
Reflex - 12 degrees (9mm)
Motor thrust angle - 4 degrees against underside of wing (motor shaft up)
Expo - Aileron 75%, Elevator 65%
Throw - Aileron +/- 6mm, Elevator +/- 6mm
CG - 35mm from leading edge

A discus launch (holding the wingtip and swinging the model at arm's length) at 30% power and about 30° upwards is a very effective method of getting airborne without stalling or coming into contact with the propeller.
I once tried to launch it grabbing the leading edge but made two mistakes: 1. miserable technique 😂 2. too much power. The result was a fantastic cartwheel. Never tried to launch it like a DLG. Will definitely try that 👍
Great video again! Our club tends to launch wings by holding the leading edge of the wing or wing tip, outward away from us. Swinging forward to launch, not saying it's 100% better, but another option.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I tried that as well but either due to my bad throwing style or because of the motor torque it was only resulting in spectacular cart wheels 😂
Problem: "With the prop in the back I am quite afraid of hurting my hand when launching it with the motor spinning..."
Solution: "4) Ask a friend to launch it for you."

Thanks! It is quite amazing what can be built from a kids toy. At least in Germany they kept the initial price at 7,99 €. I already heared that the price in some other countries has increased. Still a bargain.

Hi,just a bit of advice please. I've copied all of your recommendation for the build, but the problem I'm having is that it needs a lot of up to fly level. the COG is correct and the down thrust has been reduced, I'm now going to increase the reflex to see if this has any effect. You have mention prop torque being a problem, but glad to say it hasn't been a problem
Hi, I would increase the reflex to see what happens. That‘s basically, what I did. I increased the reflex until it was flying level and then played with the thrust angle and reflex combination until the behavior was as neutral as possible when changing the power. Let me know if the increasing of the reflex worked. For sure the amount of reflex depends also on the size of your ailerons. If they have less depth you might need more reflex.

Hi, it depends on where you live. If there is Lidl in your country then you can get it every year around May or June in their stores or online shop. If not you could try to get this one: The Pilo XL from Jamara jamara-shop.com/Pilo-XL-Foam-Hand-Launch-glider-EPP-wing-orange-fuselage-blue It is very similar or could be even the same as the Lidl glider version I used for my Lidl Devil.
Is that packing tape you used to attach the ailerons? Seems to work well?
Well observed. It’s indeed clear packing tape. I use it on the upper side of the hinge. On the bottom side I add a thin layer of hot glue and smear it with a squeegee to get a very thin hinge that is still flexible. Very robust solution. Never had any issues with it.

Hi John, yes unfortunately these motors are no longer available. You could use any other 2212 1200kv motor as long as it can handle 3s and around 15-18A (note: the 2812 is actually a 2212 but Graupner used the outer diameter instead of the normally used stack diameter). If you can get hold of the Flite Test radials then you could use the "FT Radial 2212B 1050kV" (store.flitetest.com/ft-radial-2212b-1050kv-brushless-motor/)

Needs a longer larger vertical stabilizer and stick the motor on the front
Well that‘s definitely an option. In terms of weight distribution the pusher configuration is better in order to get it balanced. I was also a bit worried about the size of the VSTAB but actually had no issues with stability
@bavarian_rc just to be clear, I mean stretching the vertical stabilizer back further, making it longer. Look at the DW Hobbies Lighting forward swept flying wing

Hi! Thank you for.this plane! I made one, but I'm afraid of the 500 gramn weight. Should I? Thrust is 660 gramms. Yours is the older glider, mine is 2021. What should I take care of? Maybe cg on other place? Thx!
Hi, I think you‘re on the safe side with your thrust to weight ratio. I also just bought some 2021 gliders and I have noticed that they changed the airfoil to a half symmetrical one. This has definitely an effect on the amount of reflex that you need. You‘ll have to test it, maybe you take a little bit less than what I have on the old version. CG should be the same. Also be prepared to adjust the thrust angle of the motor. Don‘t worry too much, the Lidl glider is quite robust and easy to fix in case of crash. I needed about 10-15 launch trials with different settings until it flew well. It took quite some punishment during these trials. Let me know your experience as I plan to do one with the new 2021 version as well... but that will be a winter build. Good luck!

I have seen a lot of posts in RC forums where people try to find an equivalent on bangood or any Chinese platform, but obviously they are only on sale at Lidl. I hope one day you will get the chance to get them in Australia as well.

K-MART sells them as "Big Foam Glider" in Australia and New Zealand.

Could I fit a 2200 3s?
I never tried, but if you hollow the fuselage further back to host the receiver it could be possible. But definitely a tight fit. CG could be an issue.

Klar, das geht auf jeden Fall. Gleitet auch ohne Motor ziemlich gut. Hab auch schon ein paar Umbauvideos zum Nurflügel Segler gesehen

Question about the center of gravity.
You mention this is 35mm from leading edge. Is this for all the LIDL gliders? Regardless how you modify/hack it or just fir the LidlDevil?
The CG at 35mm is only valid for a flying wing setup similar to my Lidl Devil. For a standard setup (with horizontal and vertical stabilizer) the CG should be at around 60mm from the leading edge.
I like your video related to Lidl glider. But in Italy this glider was never arrived in the shops in the last 2 years. Pity.

You literally say motor shaft up and then you add the nuts under the upper screws so the motor angle is opposite and it pushes the plane down. I've done pretty much everything like you did but the motor pushes my lidl delta wing to the ground every time I try to handlaunch it
And once I get it in the air, it tends to fall into an uncontrollable spin and falls to the ground
If you look at the plans (link in video description) you‘ll see the correct angle. The reason for adding nuts under the upper screws was that I didn‘t cut the fuselage at a correct angle. After some flying I think I could even reduce the angle a bit more and give it a bit more reflex. When I cut the power for landing it has a tendency to drop the nose down. With less thrust angle and more reflex it should be good. For hand launching give it some ticks of up trim and throw hard with a 30 degree up angle without motor power and then quickly apply power.
Are you sure your CG is ok. If it goes into a spin it is likely tail heavy. Or it could be that the motor torque at low airspeed it causing this effect. In that case don’t give full throttle but only half and then slowly increase power once you have gained some airspeed. Btw you speak about a delta wing which would be a completely different setup but I guess it is not a real delta but the same geometry as mine?
@@bavarian_rc it is pretty much the same shape as your Lidl wing. I think I found out why it behaves so bad once I throw it in the air with motor on, because my motor angle is the opposite direction as it should be (shaft down) :D and I'm using 2807 1700kv motor, that should have less torque than the motor you used. I'll unglue the motor, get a proper cg and let you know if it flies, thanks for the answers tho

Я сделал вполне бюджетный вариант.
С воздушки PCP завалил ворону. На столе её расправил в положение полёта вверх лапами. Размах получился 58 см. Сушил долго.... Месяц. Воняла ссука сильно первые две недели. К лапам приделал колёсики 40 мм. Мотор 2205 посадил на моторамку в клюв. Благо клюв позволяет. . Литий 2 банки. Вес получился 390 грамм. Летает стабильно. Сейчас хочу убить вОрона. У него размах до 70 см можно получить. В идеале конечно лучше цаплю использовать - из неё можно дальнолета до 10 км хорошего сделать🤔👍. Такие вот дела.

Mit der Zeit kommen die Teile schon zusammen, bleib dran am Hobby und mach weiter so!

Ich könnte ja Mal ein Video von einem Schulstart in einer Duo-Discus hochladen, müsste das dann aber mit Musik machen weil darauf der Fluglehrer zu hören ist

Have a look at my channel. There's a video from last year's. Have you tried, launching it from the wingtip? Works well for me without coming near the spinning prop.
Just checked your channel, good stuff there 👍 it looks so easy to launch from the wing tip, when I tried it (05:06) it was a complete disaster. Also your other methods of launching flying wings over head looks soooooo easy. I have to work on that...

I also heard that in some countries Lidl never had them on sale, for whatever reason
They are offered once a year as a weekly special buy in most countries where Lidl have stores. In the UK it was late May but in other countries it was later. Worth signing up for their specials email and joining the Facebook group facebook.com/groups/303874000069865/ as you'll then have some advance warning. There might even be someone in your country willing to sell and ship a spare one to you
