I remember reading Hammer Of The God's as a 9th grader. I am a drummer and ZEPPLIN was a butterfly that metaphorically grew into my life. Page was just a god like to me even as a little boy I could feel the machine drawing me to play hard and hit with attack. I still play drums and the little boy at 52 now still plows into ZEPPLIN. Amazing band....
i understand the video is about the foundation and evolution of the guitar sound....BUT...you have to mention the plant "original voice" to fully capture the genius of the song...carl does in fact touch on plants interpretation...a true music lover (is carl).
The most amazing thing about your videos is that I listened to this music 40 years ago and now 40 years later I am learning about what its really all about. You are truly making amazing videos.
Your knowledge of all the small, but ever so important details is pure gold. The detail about the droopy / delayed bend in the riff was exactly what I had been missing for two decades of playing guitar. Thanks a lot!
Carl. I have been a lifelong Led Zeppelin addict. 50 years. I have played the guitar fairly badly for 30 of those years but now more recently improving. I have always kept away from my favourite band because I didn’t want to be gifted the key to the magic but how wrong I have been. Watching your insights to my beloved music just makes me love it more. Thank your sir from me in the UK 🇬🇧 you are a honorary British blues guy. We thank the U.S. 🇺🇸for giving the world this amazing music
Thank you so much Carl. I’m from Sydney Australia and was about 14 years old when I got LZ2. I basically learned guitar by playing along with this album. Being so young and inexperienced I got a lot of the basics down but wasn’t able to get all the details. And the record wore out completely with all the needle juggling to try to hear details. I got a 68 les Paul custom when I was 15 and still have it today. I got to see LZ live in feb 73 in Sydney and it was the best show of my life so far. Your skill, experience, passion and insight is adding so much value to me I can’t thank you enough. Thank you, thank you, thank you……..
Excellent breakdown and wall art. This is my favorite Zeppelin song. It never gets old even after 45 years with hundreds of plays. Thanks from Colorado.
I’m 62 years old and grew up listening to Led Zeppelin (and still do!) and this journey you have taken us on brings me back and I thank you for that! I play a Les Paul only because Jimmy Page was and still is my guitar idle. Your song break downs are incredible and I have learned so much, please do continue to enlighten and educate us! Thank you Carl!
I am a singer and the guitarist and I have spent my whole life pretending that I was not as influenced by led Zeppelin as I am. I understand Plant's vocal style on a visceral level. You, get this music on that level, but importantly You know how to share that with us. I cannot thank you enough.
This track always blows me away. I love Robert's vocal delivery and harmonica in the first section, and then it winds up to be an absolutely blistering rock song. What a way to end such an amazing album. And Carl, you play it so well!! Thanks for the video man.
I’m so glad you got something out of it. My desire is to share the beautiful secrets I’ve learned. I want anyone who watches my videos to come away saying, “I’ve learned something and spending time watching was worth it!”
The journey actually surprised me. I just thought I’d do a couple of tracks, but it became a beautiful journey for me. I’ve learned so much. If that’s all I did, I’m proud that the my Zep II portfolio is now available for years to come. One day it may find a larger audience and become an important contribution to the mosaic of the complete story of this once in a lifetime, incredible band. I wanted my utterances to be a worthy historical document.
Great channel ! I'm so glad I found it. I sure hope you'll keep making these awesome videos. Hope to see songs from bands like Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Queen, Rainbow... too. Long Live Rock And Roll !
Probably the best content on youtube. Dude you've got some skill, and a way with words. Thanks for going in depth. I could listen to zepp all day, especially 2 and 3, and I for sure cannot stop watching your videos. Thank you
Carl, your videos and history of this song and riffs bring deeper context and flavors to what is already such an AWESOME song on its own! Thank you!!!!!
Another grand slam on one of my favorite songs. Like you I’ve seen LZ in contour front and close and knew very note and best off all the albums. My locations were limited to the San Diego and Los Angeles areas. Again you so poignantly got all the little nuances of the song. I used to listen with my headphones do I could hear all you explained. SierraHotel.
Thanks, Carl. I can only reiterate the comments of the others on this great channel: thank you for taking us all on this wonderful journey with you. I've been listening (well, I thought I'd been listening) to Led Zep II for 49 years, and yet I now hear so much more in the music thanks to your fascinating and inspiring presentations. Your joy for the music is infectious. Well, I can't wait to see where you're taking us next. I only know that you like Blackmore. So, will it be more Led Zep (no complaints from me). Or Blackmore? Or, perhaps, someone else? Mr Baldassarre, sir, I think that a man of your infinite class, taste and refinement just has to be a fan of both Steve Howe and David Gilmour.
Tony, first of all, thank you for the very kind words. I give it my all and I appreciate your acknowledgment. ...And yes, Howe and Gilmour are two exquisite guitar players! Although they have completely different approaches (like Page and all the true “greats”) they create their own unmistakable, sonic world that is immediately recognizable. Love them both!
I’m a fan but not a musician and it is so interesting to see and hear your take on Led Zeppelin- you’ve got skills and super fun to watch play. Great job!
Carl! Kudos to you for your insightful videos. As an aspiring guitar player I wish I’d have found your channel sooner. You’re now my go to channel when I get the urge to try and learn a new Zeppelin tune. First stop. Your channel to catch the emotion and get inspired. Next step over the the mechanical channels to read the tabs and muddle the the minutiae, then back to you get re-inspired. Surprised you haven’t hit 1 million subs yet! Great content, great presentation, great playing, and great quality videos. Keep up the good work
More! I’m enjoying your journey and insights into Led Zeppelin with a focus on Jimmy Page’s incredible guitar godliness. Your talent is awesome. Love the play by play explanations of what Jimmy was doing with background and lineage to the music. I’ve seen a couple of your videos now and I am now on board to see all of your posts! Keep’em coming!!
Now that I’ve been playing three hours of LZ live on my revival tour, I’ve discovered and I uncovered many insights and secrets I hope to share these tidbits on UA-cam one day!! Please share my channel!!
Great stuff!!! I’m hooked! On the subject of great bands and player’s! Aerosmith’s first album “Dream on” is chock full of incredible blues elements and guitar riffs worthy of anyone looking to improve their playing! I love to see your breakdown of this often overlooked masterpiece!! .. Great channel! Cain’t put my guitar down!!
I don't know how you can expand this like you do professor. Bet you doing awesome job 🙏 This was one of my first songs. I played it over and over so my friends would think I knew something. That looks like a 70s Les Paul Gibson Deluxe I don't know if you're familiar with truthsurge. He does cover songs but I introduced him to your Channel
Just discovering your site. So good to hear from another Zep-ologist. Impressed you know the history of this song, and play it so well. Their intro/outro is so close sounding to Sonny Boy's version its eerie. Thanks for the efforts!
You are anointed professor Zeppelin! That is really great, helpful and insightful work and teaching. Really unlocks why zep is so satisfying and good, belying what some find as simplistic and derivative. Thank you!!
Thanks again Carl, another great break down right down to the pick angle which really made a difference when I was playing along, great way to close out two, looking forward to more. 220th Darrel.
You’re very welcome! I’m glad the pick angle mindfulness helped you. There is so much to say on that. It’s important to recognize and allow yourself to continuously adjust the parameters to picking! There is NO “constant” at the molecular level. In fact my pick angle changes within that very riff to accommodate what’s necessary. If you’re stumbling trying to play something always check two things: the fingering and the picking (angles as well as motions -up/down etc). The problem is usually one or the other or both! Peace my friend!!
Thank you very much Carl for this excellent presentation and analysis ! I am going to grab my Crosscut (for those who ask : Reverend guitar, like a doped tele) and start to learn to play this piece as well as I can !
Hi Carl, I just found you and your channel and I just subscribed! Led Zeppelin II I found back in June of 1972 when I first saw them at the Nassau Coliseum at age 14… And like you I have been immersing myself in my favorite album of all time Led Zeppelin II going on nearly 50 years! I can’t wait to dig into all your videos you’re doing a fantastic job of not only describing the technical aspects but the brilliance of the music itself… Blueberry Hill is my first ever bootleg as well, for me it was in 1973 that I first heard it… And while the studio version of Bring It On Home blows me away every time I listen to it, the live version from Blueberry Hill has got its own bit of magic for sure!… Love that you’re touching on it here… One little thing I’m surprised that you did not mention though in this video. Yes the main riff is one of Jimmy‘s best of all time. But those double stop and triad chords things that he’s doing underneath Plants vocals are some of the most manic an amazing playing I’ve ever heard him do… And pure tone from the gods!… rock on 😊
So agree on the verse chordal riffs. They were one of my most delightful new licks to discover. I played wrong when I was young and was blown away with his great it feels under my fingers when I figured it out for these videos. Sometimes I get so excited doing these videos sharing everything I love I forget some of the main points I wanted to make!!
I love your videos!! The level of care and detail you employ to go into these analyses is really wonderful to see and also learn from. One possible suggestion: I would love to listen to your videos analyzing each Zep album as a collection, so maybe consider putting, for example all of the Led Zeppelin II videos in a single playlist?
Once again Carl... You brought us another great installment of Zep!... I really have enjoyed this series because it got me into going back and learning some riffs and stuff I've forgotten or really didn't bother to sit my butt down and learn... I was never much into really learning "Other Peoples" music if you will.. I always had this fear of cross contaminating my playing style. But ultimately I got to understand you have to learn somewhere along the line.. And for me.. This was a great reminder.. Thank you again for this incredible insightful series.. ,,V
I’m actually preparing to shoot more. Please recommend my channel to others. I need the support to keep it going! Thanks so much for the encouragement!
Thank you Carl. If only we knew then right? However it's possibly sweeter now. It's interesting how these lads and songs inspired so many and where would we be if there had not been The Yardbirds? I appreciate your passion and the depths your exploring very much and am looking forward to more!
Carl, Zeppelin II has been a great ride, first off Thank-You so much for putting in the time and work into this series. Appreciate and enjoy it very much. Secondly, will be looking forward to what comes next. Positive if it isn't a LZ album will still be a fabulous one. Tell anyone I know to check out your channel, don't do a whole lot of social media to tell the world. Was very happy with your pointing out the proper way Page does the harmony. A mistake I've heard many times and a pet peeve. Cheers my friend.
You’re so welcome! I learned so much revisiting this material. My youthful recollections were missing so many subtleties that only my seasoned ears of today could truly capture accurately.
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic know exactly what you mean. Do find it refreshing looking/listening to these fabulous songs via someone else's eyes/ears. Said to someone recently, 'no matter how long you play the Guitar or listen to a song, you'll always hear and learn something new. Especially playing an instrument. There's many ways and variations to play the same bunch of notes. Don't ever think the journey is over and you have it figured out, that's when one stops learning'. This was after he told me he'd figured out the Zeppelin Catalog in a couple months and was moving on. Sigh!! So many reasons that is sad. Is it really learning to enjoy and understand? Or memorize how to play to say "ya I know that"? The journey has so much to enjoy along the way. Take care. Can hardly wait to see what's next.
Thanks for the great sharing! So true re: there’s always something new to notice if you pay close enough attention. I appreciate your engagement! Peace, Carl
Your channel is just so great. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of these epic songs. Thanks for your hard work I really appreciate it. Jimmy is just so great. His solos are like little songs within the main song. His solo’s pick you up and tell you a story and then place you back down. Cheers ✌️🎸🇨🇦❤️
Thank you so much for all the positive comments. I REALLY appreciate it and agree with all your characterizations of Jimmy Page and the band!!! Please like, subscribe and share. It’s hard getting the word out!
I love your videos. So many of these reaction videos add nothing and get old quickly. Yours are great because you don't play the track that we have all heard a million times but instead give fabulous insights into how it was played and created. I would love to see you react to the complete 8/31/69 show as well as a Europe '73 show like 3/22/73 or 3/24/73 particularly the "Dazed and Confused" and "Whole Lotta Love" from those shows. Jimmy's playing is at its peak and the Bonham Page syncopation during the blues part of the "Whole Lotta Love" medley is always unique. And for more great Page moments, "Thank You" from 1/22/73 which has a particularly beautiful solo and very different than the 1970 "Thank You" solos and "No Quarter" from 2/12/75 which again has a particularly beautiful Page solo.
great stuff...really enjoy your analysis & enthusiasm. I like playing the opening "chugging" riff with the side of my thumb tip...seems to add that fleshy fatness goodness to the sound.
You mention the “vibe” and that is what had me spellbound about this album in my youth... the chemistry was amazing on Zep II... also Zep I, I think the only other album that really came close wasAC/DC’s Let There Be Rock. I was actually a bit disappointed by the guitar on Zep III and particularly Zep IV, it just didn’t have that raw ‘old amp pushed to the brink of overload’ that they had on Zep II. Four Sticks, Misty Mountain Hop and When The Levee Breaks most notably. That said, the tele on Stairway was phenomenal (it amazes me that such an iconic tone has seldom, if ever, been reproduced... also the solo on Since I’ve Been Loving You had a fantastic sound. As I understand it, Page was frustrated that he just couldn’t get a tone to do that song justice until, by chance, he discovered a small Vox amp that just happened to be at the studio) .. I think actually the univibe sound Hendrix had on Machine Gun, might have suited Levee Breaks. I use to listen to Zep II over and over and over... never got sick of it... Plant’s vocal was astounding!
Hey Chris my buddy! Thanks for always being there! If I had 10,000 just like you subscribing, we’d be in business! Yes, that live chunky intro is so great and single handedly demonstrates all one needs to know about the two creatures of Led Zeppelin studio vs Led Zeppelin live!! PS I’m auditioning vocalist in a couple of weeks for the zeppelin II local pub concerts I’m going to do! PS: I just signed on to do a North American tour next January - February. I’ll be playing my Collinwood Yards album across US and Canada.
Cool video again, Carl, thank you. That's quite the journey! Regarding Willi Dixon and this song, I'm trying to dig up an old Jimmy Reed recording (I think it's on a CD packed away on a shelf) in which he delivered the lines: "Took a little walk down down, messed and got back late, find a note here waiting for me, said 'Daddy I just can't wait" I was gobsmacked because like every other Zep Head, I knew the estate of Willi Dixon won the copyright. I had no idea Plant had ransacked Jimmy Reed as well! On reflection it's not surprising, since Plant was a genuine blues fan and afficionado even at age 19. He would've soaked up that lyric like all the others: he was marinated in it. 😁
Mr. Baldassarre, what a tremendous series this has been! You're insights and analysis of this album have been educational and inspiring! After watching them, I just want to go and pickup my guitar and start playing! May I be so bold as to make a suggestion/recommendation? As big a fan as I am of Mr. Page and LZ, my reason for wanting to play guitar started in 1971, when I purchased the Humble Pie album "Humble Pie Performance Rockin' The Fillmore". Although I have a few players such as Mr. Page, Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Mark Farner, Alex Lifeson, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore and Peter Green that I consider as favorites, from that day on, Peter Frampton has been my overall favorite guitar player. It was his playing on that album that inspired me to play. His style was like nothing I had heard before or since for that matter, with his melodic approach mixed with jazz. I would love for you to analyze and hear your thoughts on his playing. Cheers, MB
Tanks for all your Comments on jimmy page and your tricks you show beacause im à very very bien fans of jimmy page Ils so difficult to play jimmys licks and solo and readem .
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic i really need to listen their blueberry hill version, cool song in live too. they played this with aerosmith in rock'n'roll hall of fame, it's cool too!
Carl - Great video! Give us some info on your Lester. The inlays are not your standard Standard inlays. The first also has an inlay? Did you have some custom work done? Tks.
You are the best Jimmy Page player I have ever seen. You say you're not going to teach how to play the bits, but you actually teach better than the videos that try to go note for note. And that Les Paul sounds AMAZING! Is that a vintage or maybe a reissue?
I remember reading Hammer Of The God's as a 9th grader. I am a drummer and ZEPPLIN was a butterfly that metaphorically grew into my life. Peace my friend!!
Thank you very much Carl for this excellent presentation and analysis ! I am going to grab my Crosscut (for those who ask : Reverend guitar, like a doped tele) and start to learn to play this piece as well as I can !
Carl, you are a super calm guy. Thanks
Outstanding spotlight on how things are put together
Nice one Carl, one of my favourite Page riffs, spine tingling ....
Carl, you're the best at this, period
Wow! So kind! Thank you! I give it all I’ve got!
I’m thinking about discuss the totality of the 5th album, Houses of the Holy!
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic excellent!! I can't wait to hear what you have to say!
My favorite live version is Earl’s Court in 1970. It’s also filmed so we can see his technique and neck positions
And his tone control.
@Conorlauren Think you mean the Albert Hall. Zeppelin didn’t play Earl’s Court until May ‘75.
@@Mike_Bacon_O.B.E.
I believe you are correct.
Thank you again for this incredible insightful series.. ,,V
Thanks Nick! I appreciate you brother. Your learned words and encouragement mean a lot!
Wish you would continue these. I really enjoy your perspective and explanation of the theory of the songs!
I’m actually preparing to shoot more. Please recommend my channel to others. I need the support to keep it going! Thanks so much for the encouragement!
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic can't wait! Thank you for responding 🙂
Thank you Carl. If only we knew then right? However it's possibly sweeter now. It's interesting how these lads and songs inspired so many and where would we be if there had not been The Yardbirds? I appreciate your passion and the depths your exploring very much and am looking forward to more!
All good musicans love led Zeppelin!! Great work as always, thanks Carl..
Thank you!!!!
What a breakdown of this song.
Thank you for the encouragement and suggestions!
My first time on this channel. ... 30 seconds in and Subbed! 👍😀
You right
Those two snare hits!
great stuff...really enjoy your analysis & enthusiasm.
It’s a trance for me!
WoW Great Pic of Jimmy!
Thank You Carl ! You Rock !!!
You nailed "The chunky sound". Once again thanks for taking your time do these for your subscribers.
That's phenomenal it's all starting to come together, you deserve it. By the way, I'm always available for free consulting.... haha.
Your hired!
I always thought it was "took a little walk downtown"?
Thank you Carl love the channel, been subbed since the beginning
Awesome break down and info on the GOAT
Thanks friend. So grateful for your support!!!!!
Cheers,
MB
He’s such a lyrical player. Maybe one day I can get on that!
With your help I have learned so much thank you
Your very welcome! Thank you watching!
Carl, ya killing me! I’ve got work to do lol
Haha! That’s so funny! I love this comment!!
I have been playing this riff for 10 years, and thanks to you I now realise Page doesn't play it with hammer-on's
Thanks Carl! This is awesome!
Tanks for all your Comments on jimmy page and your tricks you show beacause im à very very bien fans of jimmy page
Ils so difficult to play jimmys licks and solo and readem .
In my top 10 Zeppelin tunes! Than you Carl!

Good history lesson. Love the show.
Glad you enjoyed it
Really good song .. and really good video, thanks!
Thank you!
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic i really need to listen their blueberry hill version, cool song in live too. they played this with aerosmith in rock'n'roll hall of fame, it's cool too!
I gotta acknowledge the Silvertone 14xx in the back ground - nice bit of vintage.
Thank you! One of my true joys!
Carl - Great video! Give us some info on your Lester. The inlays are not your standard Standard inlays. The first also has an inlay? Did you have some custom work done? Tks.
Blueberry Hill is one of the best bootlegs, respect.
You are the best Jimmy Page player I have ever seen. You say you're not going to teach how to play the bits, but you actually teach better than the videos that try to go note for note. And that Les Paul sounds AMAZING! Is that a vintage or maybe a reissue?
Thank you for the kind words!! It’s a vintage (‘72-73).
Awesome as always
Thanks again!
Thank You
