Today's smart battery chargers will not charge a completely dead battery. The clamps do not get power, until the charger knows it is hooked to a battery! But what if you have a battery that has 0 volts? You have to somehow let the battery charger know that it is actually hooked to a battery. Here is a quick and easy way to get that smart battery charger, charging you completely dead battery. This is the redneck way, I guess!

Yes this method works perfectly, I did although use a smaller gauge wire at first and it turned into a toaster wire so I went up to 12 gauge house wiring. Some chargers although good like the BatteryMinder don't take the hint right away and wait for the next test cycle; can be 30 seconds to a minute. Just be aware of wiring gauge and possible test cycles. Perfect solution but as always be careful; batteries are nothing to play with if you are unsure. Wear protective gear as stated in the video. Most solutions will have zero issues but you need to understand either battery might have a disagreement with the situation so protect yourself from both batteries in play.
Damn John how smart is that you buy battery charger to charge a dead batterybut the battery charger won't charge a dead battery you have to trick the battery charger to think in the battery is not dead. LOL

The battery charger doesn’t detect a battery. That’s why it’s a smart battery charger. I use one of my Milwaukee M18 tool batteries to bump the voltage on a battery that is less than 9v. If it’s really low you can use a welder.

DUDE! I'm not worthy!!!!!!! I had a Golf Cart behind a shed I want to sell. Knew the betteries were toast. Also knew the cart runs and dosent really run bad. Just needs batteries. And really no way to get any vehicle in the fenced back yard to get jumpers on a battery. So I was looking at removing 2 of the 8 volt golf cart batteries and luggin em all the way up through the garage. Till I saw this video that is. YOU DA MAN BRO! I got it to take 1st off a small smart charger with your Lithium tool battery hack, then I was able to get enough of a charge for the smart 48 volt regular Golf cart battery to kick in. I'm so totally geeked--I now have spare time-or as I like to call it, more beer drinkin time! Thank you! I'm only 3 years late with this comment--I was drinkin beer! LOL

I just want to say that even though you can get the battery up to its regular voltage, it will lose its ability to store much power. I left my gel battery in a motorcycle over winter (it was hard to take out) and tried this trick because I've only been using that battery for one season and didn't feel like buying a new one again. It got up to its 17V but I could only get like 1,5 ignition out of it before it would get too weak again. Now I have the charging extension on my new battery so hopefully, I'll remember to cycle it during winter and I won't have to take it out at all.
Thank you Sir! I really dislike these smart things..bought a centech from harbor freight today with a completely dead battery on my RV. This trick took it 10 seconds to start working. Off an old DeWalt battery for a drill. Bless Ya! I was about to return it tomorrow with a frown on my face.
Use the really cheap 9volt battery out of that old transistor radio, or the smoke alarm. Get a set of tiny alligator clips and parallel the 9vt to the clips when you hook up to the 12 volt you want to charge.
Better than being hunted down by "she who must be obeyed" cuz you drop her battery on the cement and crack it, woe - u in trouble plenty.
When you are done, tuck that 9vt and those gators in a baggie and tape them to the top of your charger.
Now you can tell the guys you upgraded your charger to a HEMI 😅

I just bought the same charger from harbor freight. I didnt even watch the whole video before I wrote this.
Ok so inside that charger box there is the smart chip on the right side mounted vertically. There are 2 white wires and 2 black wires. There are 2 ways to do this. 1st way is. Solder 2 wires, 1 on the top black wire and the other on the bottom black wire and connect with a flip switch and mount it to the housing. 2nd way is what I did and that is to cut the 2 black wires on the chip and simply wire nut them together. And done it will be hot all the time. Both ways you can still use the amp output.
I use this same charger with this mod to do electrolysis cleaning and it work great.

Hey john, take an old 2 wire cord and crimp on terminal rings or terminal forks and slide those into the tabs on the tool battery and put some dinky alligator clips on the other end. I actually used this exact setup to power a 12v fuel fill tank that I have.
How about calcification buildup on the battery plates? I’ve heard if that happens then the battery can NOT be salvaged ….?
Does the Harbor Freight charger you have not have a manual override button like the Noco Boost chargers have? If your voltage is under 2 volts, it wont recognize the battery.....then u press the manual button, and it'll read it then.
Nice trick. I have the same battery charger. Been using my old one because I couldn't get the newer one to work when the batt was totally dead.

yeah a question, my new charger, after learning my new noco would not work on a new battery, well charger come on then I see 1.6amps it starts charging then give error,, the battery was new yet I don't drive much and my car is 2018 NOT sure this would work being the charger does come on for a minute or so.

@@TurboJohnRacing well it did work and said it charged them up to 100%. I took the charger off and it was down to a little over 6 volts. They are 12 volt batteries so i assume they just have dead cells in them.

I've had to jump start my not so smart charger a billion times over the years because i'm a cheap ass and they don't make a good lawnmower -atv-etc. batt anymore it seems. I remember when they first came out with these chargers and I thought the damn charger was junk from the factory (almost sent it back until I was informed what a "smart charger" was). LOL

I just took the 9V battery connector from an old smoke detector, added some wire and clamps to it that I flattened out to fit like spade terminals. Snap a 9 volt battery to it and can bump charge/trick these POS smart chargers. Good to see some more home brewed approaches to combat the new technology junk of today lol

I have an odyssey pc680 in my Ducati the breakdown truck let the battery go completely dead hear is what I am trying . I have a deltran battery tender I did have two the old one I had for 15 years got killed in a lightning storm . I still have both pairs of crocodile clips . I have the lead connect to the bike so I will use one to bring open ends off the bike this will reverse the colours coming from the bike I bring the jump leads from the car and connect to wrong colour than normal . In this case wrong is right . Then I hook up my charger crocodile clips to the correct colours coming from the car . Hopefully this will do the trick . Deltran are fantastic charger you can buy extra leads another set for another bike or whatever in this case the extra crocodile clips save the day for me I hope anyway .

Damn John I’ve owned this damn “smart” Charger for a year and I thought it was harbor freight junk. I can across this video and it just so happens I left the fuel pump on and killed the battery in my truck and off course my jumper park was all but dead I did what you said and sure enough the charger started charging! 😊 thank you man

Yep that's what dumb people have done to us. (Smart charger) lol. I love my 20 year old cheap Schumacher charger it's on when you turn it on !
Not because of dumb people. It’s because old chargers can cause fires when left plugged in.

Good video. Noco Genius smart chargers have a force mode to charge a battery below 1 volt. I still have and use my Schumacher 1 Amp manual charger to trickle charge my battery along with my PulseTech PowerPulse passive battery desulfator.
This will work in a bind. Just be aware of the dangers.
There is a good chance that you will blow the fuse in your tool battery. The dead lead acid battery will more or less work as a short if it's completely discharged. The fuse is not easily replaced so you risk bricking your tool battery.
A better way is to buy a small 13.8V power supply (or 12V will work as well), preferably current limited. Hook it up with the correct polarity and charge manually for a few minutes. Usually it's enough to get the battery above 2-6V for the smart charger to start. You can get one for less than $20.
As pointed out in several of the comments, your battery will never be the same after a deep discharge. Lead acid batteries should be stored fully charged in a cool dry place. Disconnect it if possible and charge it fully with a smart charger or if thats not possible, arrange so you can charge it fully at the end of the season and top up the charge every 6 months. A permanently attached battery connector with an inline fuse is a good solution.

Picked up that exact charger at Harbor Freight in Raleigh Friday. Used a weak (but still 12.5v) alarm panel battery to get it started charging the 6 month old battery in one of my motorcycles. Rode the bike three weeks ago today. Went ride it Tuesday and it was so dead speedo lights wouldn't come on.
Anyway. Left charger on for two days. It's showing it is charging. Took it off this morning to go for a ride. Tried the key. Nope. Nothing. Meter battery. It's at 31mVdc. It was at 5vdc before I put the charger on it. I don't get it. Heading out now to get another battery.
I bought this one new in October. And it was fine 3 weeks ago. No aftermarket anything to be draining it. Irritated. May as well get the $55 back for the charger, too.
Top it worked, I used 2 6v batteries in serie holding together, and at the ends I used the multimeter cables, is charging now woot!
I have same exact charger for a motorcycle battery it happened to me so even tho the gage not working does it still charge

It doesn't work on a battery that won't hold a charge lol, it will charge the battery enough to start but if left charging overnight it will of course be able to start, but if not hooked up the battery will not hold a charge if not hooked up.

Yep that worked for me. I ran a car battery totally dead by leaving an interior light on. I have a battery pack however, apparently that is "smart" too and it would not give any juice to the system. No lights or anything would come on. I did what you said and got the charger working. Thanks.

Bro thanks man....I did it this way tho...I found my harbor freight cheap rotary tool...the power wire is exactly 12 volts, cut the wire, used my harbor freight 5 dollar multimeter to find out what wire was positive...plugged it in...hooked my charger up...did the same as you and presto...it started charging...thanks dude subscription added man
If u don't have a battery operated power tool look around your home...small neck massagers, old cable box wirers, or laptop power wires usually are exactly 12 volts, all plug in power devices say on them input volts and output volts....u just gotta figure out which one is negative and which is positive...then trick your charger...hell my hair trimmer charger is exactly 12 volts output

Happy New Year 2023! On the other end of "Lockdown". Unfortunately my Snowmobile Starter Battery that hasn't seen much action since early 2020 or 2021. Which means 2-3 years of not running.
Apparently there was enough juice for my "Smart" Chargers to attempt charging (usually 1-2 volts is all it needs)... BUT my Digital Load Tester which can give me a "baseline" reading needs A LOT more Volts. (I'm speculating 8-9 volts? Since after some brief charging it was showing 6-7 volts on a Multi-Meter but nothing on the Load Tester.)
After leaving it overnight it was able to "top off" and appear "full" (over 12v even 12.5/12.6) but the Internal Resistance is crazy high so the best I could be for a beginning/"baseline" was 75A, now about 115A but not much more yet. (Only a slight click/spin with the current onboard battery, Needs a jumper pack to provide the needed amps... Or a manual rope pull)
Thinking I need to put on a "dumb" charger for a while to force a charge... The smart Chargers "desulfate" functions and/or modes haven't seemed good/fast enough.
Maybe 20 minutes "dumb" cycles alternating with a "smart" cycle (cool down)... Load Testing before and after each step?

If you know what a smart charger is (That you didn't though your old el cheapo HF battery charge actually is 1!) and you run into this problem frequently, all you should do is hack into the charger and create a temporary jumping switch s.a. those push on switches (As someone else has uploaded a clip here on YT about it) and have the smart option to overrule the smart fracture you have but don't want, smartly!

If I had a vehicle with a good battery I wouldn't need a dam charger, I'd just jump it.
I have a dead motorcycle battery. Jump start works and bike runs when connected to the car battery. But as soon as disconnected, bike dies. Will your method work for this situation? Thanks!
Sounds like your battery may be bad! Take it to a parts store, they can check it.

Maybe this will fix the Optima battery I have that I can't get to charge!
Sometimes, optimas also have to be hooked to a good battery with jumper cables, let sit for a few minutes then charge the good battery while the jumper cables are hooked to dead one.
