    Canon in D
The Canon in D major for three violins and basso continuo; in the German original: Kanon und Gigue in D-Dur für drei Violinen und Basso Continuo, also known simply as the Canon, is the best-known work of the German composer of baroque music Johann Pachelbel.
Pachelbel composed this work around 1680, originally being a chamber music work for three violins and basso continuo; arrangements have subsequently been made for a wide variety of instruments and ensembles. Originally, a giga in the same key (D major) follows the canon, but the latter dance is performed or recorded much less frequently. The Canon is well known for the harmonic progression of string instruments, which have made it one of the most reused pieces in contemporary academic music and Rock.
The original version is performed by three violins playing on the background melody of the double bass. At the beginning, the bass only plays two bars, which, according to the continuous bass technique, is played with the chord. At first, the first violin plays the first variation. At the end, the second variation begins, while the second violin starts with the first variation. At the end of the second variation, the first violin begins the third variation, the second the second, the third the first, and that pattern is followed. The complexity of the Canon's structure increases towards the central part of the piece as the variations become more complex. The piece then gradually returns to a less complex structure. Altogether there are 28 variations.
It is a perfect or closed canon to three voices (a polyphonic form prior to the fugue), it has the characteristics of another baroque musical form (theme with variations) that used dances in ternary times such as the chacona or the pasacalle. In conclusion, this work is structured as a canon, a theme with variations, and is also based, both harmonically and structurally, on a melodic ostinato (repetitive) design that is repeated throughout the composition in the two-bar bass line.

Le piano est dans l'accompagnement, mais pas le violoncelle ?
