Sykes' solo on the 1987 album version is one of the most electrifying guitar solos of all time. It sounds as exciting today as it did 30 years ago. He was in a class of his own. Too bad he and DC never truly got on.
I seen this tour back in 87 or 88. Loudest concert I’ve been to. Probably why I can’t hear anything above 12 KHz now days. Can’t get enough of Aldridge’s drumming. One of my all time fav drummers!
Girl, look how you talk about Vivian Campbell, have more respect for this phenomenal guitarist. He was nothing less than the best guitarist who ever went through the DIO and one of the best virtuoses of that glorious time in their career. Vivian manages to do everything Sykes does with equal talent but in his own way. His playing style and version of his Whitesnake solos are as sensational as Sykes'. Stop being a Sykes fanboy by belittling the other guitarists.
Typical comment from a close minded Sykes fan. Ever listened to Dio's first 2 albums with Viv on them? They're amazing. Hes just as good of a guitarist as Sykes is. You're the type of girl who would only go to see a band if it was the original lineup lol.
@@armandoaraujo6128 are you kidding me 1 I dont care what kind Of Strat you have this song and 87 album was recorded with mostly Sykes Black Beauty Les Paul and some solo Sykes 60s Fender Strat, Sykes used Mesa Boogie amps these two guys with their Strats, Marshal amps and there Technique Style have different sound. You have tin ears if you cant tell the difference plus Vandenburg butchers Sykes solos you just want to Cry and Campbell he was good with Dio he shouldn't have left.
I think that was a great solo by Adrian. No one will ever match Sykes' solo, but it was tasteful and fit the song. Vai's solo on the 89-90 tour was great as well...just different interpretations. Too bad Coverdale has never released a live album from this tour. This was the band that hooked me to rock!
@combolado from a chic...the blonde is Adrian Vandenberg...Vivian Campbell has the dark red hair....the bass player is the incredible Mr. Rudy Sarzo...Adrian walked up to me in I sat on the 10 or better center and saw these guys at least 4 times and there is NOTHING like a WHITESNAKE concert where the entire band is a hired gun and the very best at what they do.
Vivian bloody rocks!! as well as Vandenberg.. Never seen this before. Would have been great to keep Sykes on board though. A great time for rock/metal. Since I got older I really appriciate the old classic Snake albums though with Moody/Marston..thanks for posting this.
Theres a huge truth in that..Another truth is when DC had a problem with his voice, Sykes insisted the band should move on with another singer..I guess anyone understands DC couldnt accept that
Yeah, it must have been the right thing. Members of a band just shouldn't mess around with each others' women. It's disrespectful and a recipe for disaster. And a loss for music... Just think of all the great songs Coverdale and Sykes could have written, if they had stayed together.
Lovely intro. Very instinctive and natural guitar playing. Does Vandenberg's wild vibrato really make him better than Campbell, no I love the contrast. I think Campbell is paying more attention to the subtle harmonics in the feedback for instance. Two different players! Coverdale's voice sounds very 'thick' from some heavy touring, kinda like it!
They never played the solo in 87'. When I saw them, they jumped right into the middle of another song. Such an iconic solo, why would you skip that? I know Vivian could play it easily. Just learn the solo.
Does not compare Motley Crue with Whitesnake, is heresy! The greatness of a band like Whitesnake, and as a vocalist Coverdale, do not appear in any corner!
Excellent, thank you! I have this show on tape (audio), and had no idea it was filmed. David Civilised was on-form on that tour. Campbell and Vandenberg was a good combination. (Can't believe some people want to bring Big Hair back, though...)
man, that intro & Adje's solo were just too hot! i'm a huge Vandenberg fan & a Sykes & Vai fan as well. they all bring unique elements to the Snake. thank God for guitar!!!! lol
@Tspsoldierboy / I saw them in Richmond Va nd Viv got held up in customs with passport issues and they had to play the gig without him, just Adrian Vandenberg. I was disappointed to say the least as I was a huge Viv/ Dio fan. Saw them the next night in Roanoke and Viv was there and saw them 3 months later when they started to headline! Amazing! Saw them 3 times in 90 with Vai as well.
Vandenberg asolutely dominated Campbell on this tour. He playing was spot on. Then came his injured wrists. I have a Whitesnake bootleg of this tour and Vandenberg owned Campbell on the disk. But he never played on Slip of the Tomgue, which he composed all songs for.
Cada um guitarrista fez a sua parte nesse dueto cada um fez o que devia fazer gosto dos 2 pro tempo deles eles eram monstros ñ existe um melhor que o outro
I’m from the 70’s, so my favorite guitar players are from that era. Seems these 80’s guitarists were primarily about speed. An unfortunate Van Halen legacy, though not knocking him. I do think Sykes was/is pretty good though.
I hope John Sykes made a fortune from this album. I greatly admire Steve via, but even he couldn't save Whitesnake from the uninspiring commercial hell without Sykes!
i've heard that rudy sarzo's mic isn't even on - that he can't sing at all, he just supposedly "looks cool workin' the mic." same thing when he was in quiet riot. if you pay attention, you can never hear his voice. helluva bass player though, and a super cool and nice guy.
+t. joseph cravens If you listen to the Whitesnake show from 1994 in Milan, SOMEONE'S mic is on and it sounds horrible! That would corroborate your Rudy Sarzo story. :-D
+t. joseph cravens Rudy is Awesome! Watch Project Rock and you can hear his voice. He is always amazing. Whatever he touches is gold (and turns to gold) This is kinda shitty quality video..right??? (and Tommy too)! two of the greats
Viv and Adrian complemented each other very nicely without a thousand notes a minute. And Sykes is one of WHITESNAKE'S best guitarist ever. Yet David had all of his parts re recorded. Frustrating for the music fan who likes how a band sounds. Look I've been wearing a patch on my back for over 25 year's in an M.C. we get pissed off at each other and sometimes we brawl and knock the shit out of each other. But when that's done we go back into the Clubhouse have a beer together and we are brothers to the bitter end. If anyone thinks a musicians ego is bigger than a bikers. Then you've never met a real biker in your life. Families fight, but generally at the Coda, musical end, we're still a family that would literally die for each other. Just as we did in the Military. We've never worn make up or teased our fucking hair. Point is, when most band get together they are brothers inseprable, but bands generally break up permanently after fights. Quite the opposite. Salute.
Couldn't agree more. Saw this tour in San Diego. If I had to do it all over again I would have left after Whitesnake and headed down to Tijuana and started partying two hours earlier than what we did. To this day Motley Crue is the worst band I've seen live. Hell I even saw Leann Rimes once and I would see her again if I had the choice between her and Crue!...
better yet, how about Coverdale on Blue Murder (or the songs used for a sequel to 1987) with the "remake" being a Sykes version of "Young Blood"..now THAT would be killer!
The Saints and SInners version is great, but the Sykes era1984 tour version is still the definitive version..in fact the 1987 album version is pretty much a facsimile...Sykes defined the song even if he didnt write it
Maybe it's because of it's from the 1987 album everyone is on about John Sykes. Erm Crying In The Rain is actually a new version from a previous album same with Here I Go Again, also Fool For Your Loving from Slip Of The Tongue. Amazing how The Sykes fans seem to have completely wiped from history Bernie Marsden, Mick Moody and Mel Galley. Yes Sykes is a great talent but most musicians are so don't knock musicians just cos they have different styles. Yes some are not the right fit for certain bands. There is a John Sykes Live In Japan CD and he does some of the songs he recorded on 1987. He's a decent vocalist too.
I just have to say something to all the guys who do not like some parts or any of these solos, Whitesnake was opening for the Crue on this tour and did not have much time for anything. I have never seen an opening act do a guitar solo before or since. And trying to compare almost any guitarist to Vai is pretty stupid! Take this for what it is. I just wish Adrian could still play. I was 18 when I saw this tour and it is still the first opener to kick the headliners ass i have seen.
ok I know adrian played some licks.. but man o man.. i dont remember the solo for this song sounding like that or close.. did he just make his own solo up? sheesh should have let vivian play it..
This lineup sucks, I don't care how great they may be individually. I'd rather listen to Coverdale's flat singing in Rock in Rio's Crying in the Rain with John Sykes, it gives me chills every time I see that video.
Would have loved to have seen Sykes and Vandenberg together that would have been awesome. Someone commented all about speed. Obviously haven't listened to Adrian's stuff with his own bands or his solo spot at Donnington in 90. Slip Of The Tongue would have been bit more of a cross of bluesy and rock guitar if had been Vandenberg recording the guitar parts, unfortunately the wrist injury ended that and we got widdly diddly Vai all over it. Great guitar player just not right fit for Whitesnake.
@Reg197844, have you seen the late 90's stuff where Steve Farris was the other guitarist?, Adrian must've really lost it by then cause Farris hands him his ass in every bit of footage
play as fast as you can, but the solo of Sykes in this song is simply unbeatable!!!
you are right my friend and yes first Blue Murder is awesome ;)
Sykes' solo on the 1987 album version is one of the most electrifying guitar solos of all time. It sounds as exciting today as it did 30 years ago. He was in a class of his own. Too bad he and DC never truly got on.
john plan I like Sykes but I like this particular duo. Saw this tour in Irvine ca. Very impressive .
I rate Vivian as a top player but NOBODY can better John Sykes on the masterpiece that still is Whitesnakes 1987 album for sheer musical brilliance!
couldn't put it better myself 👏👏
That's Vandenberg doing the solo but why put facts in the way
Amen my brother in christ
Love this wow! Adrian has such a recognizable style of playing. This band was killer.
I seen this tour back in 87 or 88. Loudest concert I’ve been to. Probably why I can’t hear anything above 12 KHz now days. Can’t get enough of Aldridge’s drumming. One of my all time fav drummers!
Two of the guitarists together at their best cant evoke what John Sykes does.

The best line-up in modern rock history !!

Just fantastic. Amazing band... Coverdale the best!
Rudy Sarzo rules!!! This two guitar players are mine favorite from Whitesnake!!! and David is the best singer i ever now!!
Saw Whitesnake on this tour in summer of 1987, Whitesnake was opening for Motley Crue in Roanoke V.A. at the Civic Center !! Great memories !! :-)
Firing John Sykes was the biggest mistake Coverdale ever made. Apart they were good, together they achieved true greatness.
Theres a huge truth in that..Another truth is when DC had a problem with his voice, Sykes insisted the band should move on with another singer..I guess anyone understands DC couldnt accept that
Didn't know that. If that's true, I can only understand too well he fired him.

Absolutely true!! John S wanted to rule Whitesnake...not possible in this life. Tha Snake belongs to D C
Yeah but there a rumors that John fucked Tawney.
I was there that night, my first ever gig and 12 days after my daughter was born.

@combolado Left side of the stage is Vivian Campbell, right side is Adrian Vandenberg, he plays the solo too.
One of the best Coverdale LIVE performance !
That is tough for me, Sykes and Vandenberg were my heroes in '87.
They never played the solo in 87'. When I saw them, they jumped right into the middle of another song. Such an iconic solo, why would you skip that? I know Vivian could play it easily. Just learn the solo.

Nothing can beat Sykes version. His tone alone is what makes the song.. this sounds screechy to me ..😖
talk about alot of talent!!! All on one stage!!
Vandenberg always!

87 Whitesnake w/ Great White... one of te best shows ....
Then Leppard - Tesla a few months later.....
Ahhhh the 80s
Vandy is amazing, but cmon, the Sykes solo kicked this versions ass.......
The Sykes version before the 1987 album was even better!
Sykes ruled Whitesnake 🤘😎

All of the whitesnake guitar players were great but Sykes was the best fit with Aldrich à close second. Vai was not in his place with the band
Totally I Agree
Steve Vai wasn't the right fit for Whitesnake. OK to fill in for the Slip Of The Tongue tour but that's it.
Doug sucked. Adrian definitely #1

Tommy Aldridge I guess ;P

Why is he singing in a different key to the musicians!!??
Sarzo smoked the carpet !!
Your all wrong this great solo from Vandenberg.
@MasterChico13 Campbell is way better than Vandember, even though I prefer Sykes, of course!
