Vatsim UK - VFR departure

  • This long video is intended for new VFR pilots on Vatsim UK. It's a discussion of the ATC interactions I experience departing Edinburgh in the UK.
    In the real world ATC calls are often more conversational. I'm not a real pilot. I'm not qualified to teach any flying or ATC material. I'm not endorsed by Vatsim. These videos are just a commentary on some of the 200 virtual VFR hours I have with Vatsim UK trying to research and figure out what to say. I use CAP413 and the Skyway Code for guidance to reinforce my experience. This is an example of my "routine". It seems to work and controllers seem happy with it.
    Thank you Stephen for agreeing to take part in the recording.

    Just made my first departure in VATSIM, i flew VFR from EGPH to the small field in Fife (EGPJ) just outside of the controlled airspace. Very useful guide, I flew forth road bridge and Kelty VRP. Tomorrow I'll fly the arrival back in from Fife :) There are lots of other guide videos but I love the way you stop yours, explain "what just happened" as a lot of them skip over some additional details and you're left wondering what all the extra unexplained bits were. I love the immersion VATSIM brings, I even had to line up and wait for Wake Turbulence Separation :) BTW the ORBX EGPH add on is great and helps with the taxi signs as they're correctly labelled :) Little Nav Map now also shows the disused runway!

      Well done. Good luck with the return trip! Nice part of the world. Plus EGPH has some great controllers.

      @@flightsimflyeruk Thanks, BTW, it can be confusing when tower is covering ground, ground often don't ask for intentions, but when tower is covering, they ask quite early on so I get confused when i'm supposed to state that I have information and state intentions. Also i'm not sure why when flying from airports in the south of the UK they give the barometer setting in hPa and not QNH

    • @flightsimflyeruk
      @flightsimflyeruk  3 роки тому +1

      @@uhfrc Well although the general rule is to keep your opening request short, at a quiet aerodrome you could indicate your information and intentions at the first call after the radio check (if you are making that call). For example "GXXXX, C172, north apron, information X, QNH1013, request engine start for VFR departure to ...." That way tower has a good idea of what you want. Alternatively, wait until they ask, then you know they are ready to receive the details. You'll find it varies a lot and I don't think there is a right or wrong. If you haven't been asked before, just give your full details when requesting taxi.
      Not sure what you mean by the north/south division but if the QNH is below 1000 they will add hPa after, e.g. "QNH1013" or "QNH998 hPa".

      @@flightsimflyeruk Sorry i was mistaken, I just remember all the southern controllers saying things like "fruit pastilles", maybe it was a forum joke.

    I must have watched this video about 10 times now Dave ;) It really is such a big help. As you said below, there really is no right or wrong way to do this- I have been finding it to be more of a discussion and I go with the flow in regards to the first call. But, as they say, practice makes perfect and between IVAO and VATSIM I am getting plenty of experience dealing with different controllers. All the best and thanks a lot for this series of videos... I enjoyed this video, I might give this area a fly as my initial experience with VAT sim was stressful as hell with pilots and ATC seemingly in some sort of race to break world records for who can speak fastest. Which makes a difficult learning experience incredibly difficult, so much so I haven't flown VatSim (UK flight) since.

      Thanks and good luck. I recommend flying in the Channel Islands or Edinburgh as good places to get started (and obviously pick a time when it isn't very busy - like during a Vatsim event, for example).

      @@OfficialSheffieldCouncil Interesting. Agreed, not being able to feel the force on the controls makes trimming much less intuitive in the sim. Also, sometimes I find the trim controls are too coarse and I end up fiddling with the config files to reduce it a bit.

      You can manually add VRPs by right-clicking on the map and adding a userpoint then label it as you wish. There are links to VRP databases I have seen in discussion forums which can be imported into LNM but of course you run the risk that they might be out of date.

      Thats what I have, just because there were no TrIR pro clips available but I already had the TrIR camera.
