Sybil's mother's reaction and facial expression is priceless ! It reminds me of my family when i announced that i was marrying a Japanese (I am old European aristocracy) and because no bad news ever comes alone i added "But do not worry about me polluting the bloodline with a half breed child, i am marrying another man" You could have heard all the jaws dropping at once. It was fantastic. My grandfather had the same reaction as the father here, "You will have no money blah blah" But this wasn't the 19th century and so i said, if i do not get the money that everybody who marries gets, then i will get a job as in the porn industry and make sure to use our family name and let everybody know where i come from and why i am forced to do porn. Sybil has much more class than me, i would have never become a nurse !
I think some people are always going to be shocked when their image of their children's future spouses doesn't align with the carefully crafted vision they had...that and some people can still be so backwards
@@KrystalRoseMG Parents need to stop planning their kids' life. Giving birth doesn't give you any right over this life and being a kid doesn't mean that you owe anything to your parents if they do not treat you right. @@tombstonerforever9374 The conversation that comes to mind was when Tom became the Agent and he was insisting on living in the Agent's house but eventually, he changed his mind and asked Cora (during a cricket match) if it was okay for him and Sybbie to stay at the Abbey while she's a baby. Of course, Cora agreed. Might that be it?
This was an age where the aristocracy married within each other, and certainly did not marry the working class. Birthrite was very important then. Plus, I am sure her father had concerns that he was a fortune hunter, given in those days a woman's property belonged to her husband the minute she said I do.
If I were a father of a rich woman and she declared she would marry a poor man, who would own everything of hers as soon as they got married, then I would be worried he had seduced/manipulated her for his own financial gain
@@MsJubjubbird I don't think that's how marriage law looked like in the eartly 20th century in UK. Cora's money was transfered to Robert under a special contract, otherwise the woman's money was her own.
Little did they know he'd be they're favourite son in law soon enough! 😄
😁 Yup!
Why don't I find that reassuring 😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣❤
Cora's reaction is so heart wrenching!
I know right. She looks like she is about to pass out.
Pure, naked, horror!

Ridiculuos. She's just an uppstart herself.
Well, for much less than that Joseph P Kennedy had his daughter lobotomised.
This is such a beautiful scene.

@Krystal, very well said.
@Ka Chi, you are absolutely correct.
Could have been worse, at least she didn’t say “I’m pregnant.”
And she didn't say my lover died in my bed, and Mama helped move his body. Or I've been sleeping with another girl's fiancé in Liverpool. As Mary did.

I love Tom. Love him 🍀💖💚 wee Irish sweetie 😁
Haha, 'wee Irish sweetie?' 😅
I loved him for saying that he doesn't bow and scrape. And saying that he didn't seduce anyone. Toffs are so awful to the rest of us.
2:01 Does she say "Tom"?
Yes she does.
yep, it's meant to mean 'follow me out, now' lol
Do you take requests?
Sure, if I can manage it, what do you have in mind? 🙂

A potential spouse not picked by parents is never good enough for a darling daughter or son.
