Warrenton Bypass Southbound (US-15, US-17, and US-29 in Virginia)

  • Traveling southbound on the Warrenton Bypass, a short five-mile freeway allowing commuters on US Route 15-29 and US Route 17 to bypass the small town of Warrenton, Virginia. The bypass forms a half-loop around Warrenton's east side, which gives the bypass its official name, the "Eastern Bypass".
The original portion of the bypass, the portion signed today as US-15-17-29, was built as a quarter loop in the mid to late '80s as a bypass for US-15-29. The "Northern Spur", the portion of the bypass signed solely as US-17, was built a decade later. The Northern Spur was controversial at the time because local business owners on Broadview Avenue, a primary business boulevard in Warrenton and signed as Business Route 15-17-29 today, were afraid the bypass extension would redirect all through traffic past the town and business would decrease. The spur was ultimately built.
When the Northern Spur was constructed, the older portion had its at-grade crossroads closed off, upgrading the older portion from expressway to freeway. Although the entire bypass is now built to freeway standards, the older portion still falls short of modern interstate standards due to having tight shoulders. In addition, the freeway is not controlled access, so it is not uncommon to see tractors and farm equipment trucking down the highway.
